I did my entire race boat, a 15' BAJA with the duplicolor paint shop deep blue. Sprayed it over a Nason 2K primer. Zero reaction and it adhered very well. I then sprayed 4 coats of USC 10 2K clear over it. Again, zero reaction and excellent adhesion. Cut and buffed the clear and it looks beautiful. Ran that boat hard last season and this season so far. Still looks beautiful, no problems even below the water line.
4:24 to make a quart of quality clear coat it’s going to cost you about $300 because you need to cut quality clear with either thinner, reducer etc and they are sold in quarts. So you’d need a quart of clear. A quart of reducer. A quart of hardener. And a few other things. It’s easy to get into the $500 range when doing larger projects.
Also, if you’re going to use a lacquer clear you need to cut it with about 15 percent acetone and add a touch of hardener for an extreme gloss. Lacquer based paints need to be put on heavy in order to achieve the “deep” look. This paint is perfect for your daily or work truck that you’re not trying to win car shows with. I painted my work van with this stuff about 3 years ago but that was white. It’s still in great condition somehow.
What’s up with all the hate on lacquer paint? ( not just talking about duplicolor) 2k clear coat is already proven not to hold up. Look at cars from the 90s and 2000s that have been left untouched and the clear is flaking. That’s it’s only form of protection so it’s in need of a repaint. Compare that to vehicles built in the 50s/60s that have sat for a few decades, they usually buff out really well. “ I’d rather buff from sun fade, then repainting from flaking “
Lol, flaking after 20-30 years? Oh the horror. Anybody trying to clear coat their car with a $30 quart is just hoping it will stay on there for a couple of years. But like he said, this is cheap stuff, and wouldn't be comparable to any lacquer paint that a manufacturer used.
115 to 150 per gallon x2 or 3. See you need to figure base coat clear coat or base candy clear. Comparison to my little Kia is 5k for a Gallon. Yes 5 k per Gallon that's the value of the car. At 15 years old the clear is peeling. So which one is best? I have my opinion and it is not 5k per gallon.
@@jostrander71 quart price times 4 would equal 115.00 to 150.00 us dollars per gallon. This truck Needs about 2 gallons to paint it. So at most I would be 300 bucks for laquer. My wife's car paint color was said to be 500.00 bucks. I think that was for only one pint to be used from the gallon. I said no thank you.
Any thoughts on Dupli-Color Crystal Clear General Purpose Acrylic Enamel? I bought it and so far having trouble. After buffing and polishing it is dull and all scratched up. Doing the same buff/polish on the same panel over factory clear, it turned out great into a mirror finish. And that's a 20 year old car.
Yes you can use a different clear, but test a small panel to make sure there is no reaction and two make sure the paint completely dries. Not sure what clear is available to you but some good ones are speedokote, and finish one by Sherwin Williams both are available on amazon.
I used duplicolor red oxide primer in spots under gloss black basecoat then clear coat then sanded out orange peel and got red “pimples” all over. Anybody else?
Happened to me with a water base and an enamel clear. I think some paints take like a week to a month to fully cure before sanding or polishing, but it won’t say that in the can. Depends on the humidity and temp too. I took mine down and gonna have to redo it.
I wish I would have saw this video prior to using. The clear came out totally matte finish. I have not cut/buff yet. I will not use this product again. Buyer beware.
Spennyman10 sorry to hear that , if you cut and buff you will have a much nicer finish but it does take more work. Hope buffing it works out for you, thanks for your comment.
Spik3e A good 2k clear speedokote, usc clear, nu-evo, basically any good urethane based clear will do fine. Just make sure the paint completely dries before spraying the clear on top to avoid any reactions
@@Mechaniclyfe right on, I didn't see this reply till after... But I ended up using PPG MC730 worked great. While wet and after drying both worked fine with no reaction. Thank You.
@@Mechaniclyfe Do you think I could spray a different brand of clear over this duplicolor clear? I still haven't cut and buffed it. The surface is very rough right now.
Sherwin williams has one of the best clearcoat that you can get on the market. I paint every single day and i will put sherwin up against any company out there, dupont, ppg you name it. The down to sherwin vs others i have used is it's the most stinkinish most nasty smelling shit there is but it goes on like glass if you know what your doing.
Guys just be careful with the 2k though. Most of you don’t have the proper safety equipment to spray it at home. Hacking it together won’t cut it for your health either especially for anyone else in the house or your neighbors. Pro painters don’t wear hazmat looking suits and hoses running to their face just for fun…
They sell a lot of this garbage to unsuspecting hobbyists who don't know much about paint and coatings. It really makes you wonder when you're out there shopping for a used car lol! Just take a little brake cleaner on a rag and rub the paint. If it's not 2k, it'll rub off on the rag.
Pointless. If you're going to do this sand base coat smooth with 1000 and clear with 2k clear coat then you'll have to sand the clear with 3000 and buff it again to get a professional finish.
So.....you don’t actually test it and your giving it a trash rating? Having used this stuff for years I can tell you that while it’s not the best for all applications it works pretty well. This guy is full of $hit so I don’t know why he’s bashing it, I literally poured a cup of gas on a door panel and let it sit overnight and it had zero reaction.....and it was coated with the same clear coat he’s bashing two years ago. Sunlight punishes all clear coats, 2K, 1K, 2X.....I don’t care if you use epoxy resin it’s going to deteriorate under the sun. But saying a year is going to kill it just is not true unless your trash at painting. If your buffing this and cutting that is the reason your having issues, that cuts away the layers of clear and it’s really is meant for matte finishes that don’t need buffing. I would not use this if I wanted a mirror shine, but I also would pick it over most other brands when used at what it excels at. By the way, what the hell are these “reactions” your talking about? If you put a clear coat over another you will always have an reaction.
1. Trash rating?: I used almost the entire can , worst finish I have ever gotten, not only in gloss retention but also in depth. 2. Sun Fading? Yes this paint is very thin many coats needed to be applied in order to get enough UV protection, along with corrosive protecting , 2/3 coats just aren’t enough to sustain from a gasoline spill I have used it on a motorcycle tank, spilled on the tank and the clear was down to the base just completely disintegrated it. 3 paint reaction? : yes it’s a lacquer paint, ever had lacquer paint over urethane ? That’s a reaction waiting to happen. It can cause lifting with urethanes or enamel paints.
Man that shit sucks all around the board dont buy that shit paint and clear coat coat sucks I painted my car with jet black and that stupid clear coat my car looks flat black with that clear coat

Good job, and thank you! I was just looking at getting a can to play around with on some oil-based paint.
Dang I was like why is thi clear coat is acting up!! thank you!
You have to cut and buff anyway with 2k or 1k clear
If you get a good paint lay out , buffing will be to a minimum , this stuff doesn’t lay out well

Let it fully cure sand and revisit with a 2k clear
Thanks for sharing! 👍🏼
In my part of Canada that can costs $60.50

Ah I see, that’s strange definitely some sort of chemical reaction
Do i have to use duplicolor thinners and reducers with duplicolor paint?
No you can use other reducers as long as it is compatible with lacquer paint
