I'll be very honest when I say this. Not only would rock and roll, but music in general would be empty without Led Zeppelin. That's how I feel Led Zeppelin is important to music.
Led Zeppelin has arguably the greatest lead singer of all time, the greatest guitarist of all time, and the greatest drummer of all time. That's insane! No other band comes close to that.
The magic of Zeppelin is that they are still by a country mile the coolest band ever even today. If a Hollywood Star is seen wearing a Zeppelin logo on a tee-shirt they instantly become cool because they think Zeppelin are cool.
......as Jack Black said "Best band, ever" No other band has come close, or will ever come close to Led Zeppelin, they really must have sold their souls to the devil to have been this good. Even today, over 37 years after their demise, they are still so important in popular music. Simply brilliant.

How anyone can actually rate Black Sabbath higher than Led Zeppelin is beyond me... Zeppelin were a huge inspiration to Sabbath (in particular Led zep II) and im not saying just being an inspiration makes them better but their quality of material and pure talent in general outshines sabbath by a fucking mile...and I say this as a Sabbath fan also..

+angel ramon diaz I wholeheartedly agree with most of your choices, but while JPJ is undoubtedly one of the greatest bassists ever, IMO John Entwistle is the greatest to ever play the bass. He was just a beast. Led Zep is my favorite all-time band (and I agree Bonzo is the greatest drummer ever), so I don't say that out of bias, but "The Ox" was just incredible on the bass.
A good point was made. Some of their songs were ballads, but they added just enough to make it rock. Some of their acoustical songs were very heavy if you really paid attention to it. Page was really hard on the guitar. If is was electric, it would blow you out of the room.

Heavy Rock. Thats what I call Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. These bands hated the term heavy metal. It was a put down for them to be labelled as such. Now Judas Priest embraced heavy metal and played heavy metal. Kiss, Aerosmith, Foghat are hard rock.
