Death must die has become incredible with its recient (ish) update, Act II and its updated skill system is amazing, and i could just die for the art style of the game
Can't believe Boneraiser Minions is not on here. Top-tier game, man. The developer has a sick catalogue of games that he supports to this day with regular updates to pretty much all of them.
I think the video creator does not like pixel art games. It's very apparent from his rating bias.
Bonwraiser Is the best
Yeah Boneraiser Minions is probably one of the best of the genre, it's criminal to not have it here.
Not only that.. it has Tetra Master in it!!
Boneraiser minions is without a doubt the easiest S tier ill ever give
Halls of torment is S tier
Magic Survival was the game that started this genre, could've at least gave them a mention, it's an amazing game
Yeah it's sad that people praise the copy more than the original😢
Magic Survival is the best one. Unfortunately Leme is really slow with all the updates and he broke the late game really bad.
@@vitaliykim8177 What's your longest time to survive?
@@CoFF3e_Man virtual ecosystem 52 minutes 30 seconds. Didn't get the hydra unfortunately, so couldn't survive more. What about you?
@@vitaliykim8177 Virtual Ecosystem 47 mins+
I hate Artifact rng lmao
I really appreciate the game platform being mentioned for each game. Thanks alot! Not many people do that, its super helpful!
Glad it helped! Always good to know the little things like that can be helpful
Yep since Steam is super slow to adopt and add new game tags, so thanks 🙏
Halls of Torment is my favorite one so far. Such an awesome little gem
I'm waiting for 1.0 before fully diving back in, but might sneak in some runs when I can. Definitely top tier game
My favorite one didn't even make the list. Yet Another Zombie Survivors. Good graphics, fun setups, Different enough.
Kinda basic, barely any challenge, very fast to learn best strat(crit is op and easy to stack), low replayability with so much repetition. There was an update recently, though, maybe made game better.
I'm surprised Rogue Genesia isn't on here, it has a hook like Slay the Spire while surviving hordes and the dev is constantly interacting with the player base.
Rogue genesia is such a great game and the progression system is deep
There's one called 'Bounty of One' that seems to be a fantasy western based world, it has a few chars, and each run has you fight against three bosses. Sadly atm there are only 4 bosses available, and only the first one will be swapped out between one or the other. If you enjoy these games, it's fun to get into, and it is also co-op up to four people.
I just recently got into this genre after trying out 20 Minutes Till Dawn and am already hooked; thanks for putting this list together.
in my opinion, 20 minutes is the badest game of this genre i've tried.
You should try brotato or soulstone survivor they are way better than this one. If you do so, let me know what you think of them.
@@r3si735 cheers, thanks for the recommendations. all the better if I already enjoyed 20mtd then :D
yes he is right 20 minute too is one of the worst i've got in my collection, luckily enough i've never tried the one from his bad list @@acquij
@@r3si735 completely disagree. 20MTD is just really good. A tier game for sure. There's just something about artstyle in Soulstone survivors I can't look at it for more than 10 seconds without having to vomit.
You should try out "Noita"!
Some suggestions for those looking for more from the genre: Time Wasters, Deep Rock Galactic Survivor, Artifact Seekers, Time Survivor & Renfield BYOB are pretty fun. Artifact Seeker has some solid variety and a bit of a mapping system somewhat similar to the visual layout of the atlas in Path of Exile.
I'm very excited for DRG Survivor, that was a really good demo to play
I've only played Time Wasters and Renfield but completely agree with your praise. the latter, however, for how much I enjoy it, is very frustrating imo in regards to the difficulty increase and controls.
Another one to check out would be Yet Another Zombie Survivors.
Don't put games that are not out yet tease.
Time Wasters is what brought me back to this whole genre
BROTATO is top notch, i got a hundred hours in, everything unlocked but still keep on playing. Winning a game with every 40+ base characters on difficulty 5 is the real thing here and omg it's challenging !
Hall of torments is also very good, especially since they removed the 60 fps lock and had more content 👍
I wish I could understand why everyone loves Brotato so much. Other games got marked down for plain backgrounds and lack of enemy variety. Brotato is the worst offender in this regard. It is so boring to look at and after a few runs, I just got bored and quit. It looks like there is a lot of run variety, but every run felt the same and just wasn’t interesting.
I liked brotatoe but yeah I can see why it can get boring. For me personally I felt there were just way to many stats that I was having to "fix" so a character could be viable.
Eh? The variety of builds you can do is absolutely massive. Yes there's some stronger weapons but half the fun was doing some off the wall builds and having them win on Danger 5
At the end of the day every game isn't going to appeal to you even if you like the genre and that's okay.
I can see the reasoning for finding it boring, but what kept me engaged personally was the giant variety the game offered with every run, but like others said. Not every game can appeal to everyone and that's fine
Like the other said. Its kinda understandable. But at the same time Not at all since every Charakter got its own favored builds making every run new
Same here played for like 4 hours and was bored of it. Don’t get the hype. In the genre there are far better options imo. Build diversity yes but a game like vampires or halls is just more my thing. Gunfire , death must die my playlist is full of them and love em all. Brotato was ok for the price it nothing more
I personally think that soulstone survivors is the best one, I feel like it has an endless amount of content for a game that's fairly recent. It also is very unique with it having skill types, multi cast, and curses. Soulstone survivors is definitely one of my favorite games right now, and I hope the game developers the best!
Looking forward to their new game rogue soulstone
I don't like how it looks
Either "wish them the best" or "hope (all) the best for them". English is weird.
Thanks for the recommendation, I was thinking about trying it and this is the push.
one game i found thats very similer to vampire surviver is magic survivor a mobile game but the graphics are great and the visuals for the abilitys at final tiers look insane and make you feel like a god
Bro that's the original game and all of these games are copies
He should have included it
@@tejas4567 the problem is that almost no one knows that game, its a very niche game, and vampire survivor took the idea and made it infinite times better on variety and content, so most people don't even know magic survival exists
Great list agree with your choices - never got around to trying choo choo so will give it a shot. The latest in this genre that has been sucking up all my time is Cleanup Crew - great graphics and the gameplay is challenging (upgrade system is kind of weak and even though they are blocked you can actually select and use them) but it's unique enough to be fun. Chickenauts is the other one I've been spending time on it's not a VS clone more like a gungeon clone but fun. Great vid as always!
Thanks for watching as always! Cleanup Crew is not one I heard of, so I'll need to check it out
And Chickenauts is actually a game I've played a little bit of. I'll need to check it out again and see what they've added
the worst thing you can hear in a game "oh wow it has a ton of different currencies"!
Dear Burr,
Your videos are the only ones that I immediately click when I see them. I love how much information you pack into each video, and your dedication to the roguelite genre.
Keep it up!
Thank you! Comments like this really mean a lot and I'm very happy that you enjoy the videos. Thank you so much for supporting
Another issue with the Pathfinder one is the run time. It's about 5 to 10 minutes per floor, so it seems ok at first, so once you're strong enough to get to 10 or so floors down, the run time end up being well over 40 minutes. I feel like they could fix this by letting you quit after beating a floor and then start from where you left off later, but as it is now I found myself just letting my character die cause I played too well during my lunch break.
thx for including the music used, that ash level music from binding of issac is fire
another two I haven't seen listed in the comments that are quite good and worth checking out are Spellbook Demonslayers and Nova Drift the former has an absolutely MASSIVELY expansive meta progression system with a very large amount of depth on upgrades you can get mid run as well as difficulty modifiers with a solid but not too impressive graphic scheme as well as unique mechanics that make build diversity interesting (such as granting bonus global stats when u max weapons out encouraging specific builds for specific weapon types) and Nova Drift feels somewhere between this type of game and a proper roguelike/arcade shooter but has a similarly expansive run to run system no direct meta progression beyond unlocks but a lot of build diversity and multiple game modes that are all fairly enjoyable with more content still to come
Death Must Die is AMAZING if you give some time into it and grind up some gears
The grinding part reminds me so much about Diablo 2 , and you'd try to minmax the roll and find the best one to build your character.
The Hades type leveling system also make the game variety so much more, and each god really emphasize on one aspect, and you can pick up to 3 major gods and 1 support god.
With only 1 stage, i already sink 40 hrs into it , trying to grind the best piece of gear for my character. It even has unique gear that has special effect or special item that attach a skill on it.
Cant wait for them to release stage 2.
I honestly didn't expect i'd like this game as much as i did when i first played it because before you get some gears first, the game progression can be quite a bit tedious, especially if you add difficulty toggle on (it's a system that just like Hades difficulty system.
Yeah idk why he ranked it so low. He must not be into min max/Diablo style gearing idk. Death must die is an S tier game for me
@@MrFloat777he said ‘has great potential to be something special’ which is fair because the game seems low on content until they drop the 2nd act in a few weeks. I haven’t played it yet but looks like I’ll be getting in at the right time!
@@MrFloat777 because it's poor in mechanics and barely has anything more than that minmaxing of stats.
Death must die is such a great game as of now. I cant wait for more content to drop.
Huge fan of vampire survivors. I've really enjoyed my time with death must die as well but I just want to see more content for it... I'm sure it'll come in time though.
Death Must Die could be the biggest one of these games at the end of the day, it's exciting to see
I would put it in the top category but it does feel unfinished for sure.
DMD have actually been rewriting a large chunk of the game code and making act 2 completely unique, it's why progress slowed down
Recently I've been enjoying Artifact Seeker, it only has a demo out, but what it shows is still decently fun, paced, decent looking abilities and progression
Excellent vid, thx!
I got over 80 hours of Soulstone survivors and its reeeally good, nice tier list mate
Boneraiser Minions is my personal favourite from this subgenre. Very unique premise and mechanics, a bangin soundtrack, lots of replay value and just overall made with a lot of love!
Yeah it's pretty good started playing it recently. Definetely a thumbs up
I remember playing games like Crimsonland and Nation Red, even way before Vampire Survivors. These games feel like prototypes of what we're playing right now. However Vampire Survivors did popularize the genre and set a new standard.
One part of Death Must Die I liked were the lore books. Seriously, read the chapters you've collected, especially the necromancer books are interesting and really funny.
I never see much love for Scarlet Tower. It deserves it. Greedland, Spell Disk, Crafty Survivors and Yet Another Zombie Survivor are all good mentions, as well.
Great list but you are missing SO MANY GREAT games from this genre. Greedland, Nebula, Time Wasters, Scarlet Tower, Spellbook Demonslayers, Skybreakers, Yet Another Zombie Survivor, Project Lazurus, Rogue Genesia, Bio Prototype, Boneraiser Minions, Nomad Survival and many more! There are some absolute BANGERS in this loaded genre. I'm a junkie for these games. lmaoo
I agree I missed so many. So many games to try
@BlackCanvasAudio Now that's an extensive list! I've only played VS, Soulstone Survivor, Death Must Die and Halls of Torment. Would you care to make a top 20 list?
can you give more suggest? i want to know
I just played keepers toll. Pretty good.
I'm actually amazed that almost every single tier list I see for Horde Survivor games doesn't include the one I think beats every single one: Nova Drift. If you haven't played it I highly encourage you, it's in Early Access since some years ago but it has some of the best weapon/abilities in the genre, plus the combos you can make are just so fun to do, they will be coming out of EA this year if I remember correctly.
But why so expensive cuh
@@bo0t3r29 well, because it wasn't released with the wave of survivors-like that were all priced at 5$ and because it is much better made than most of the ones I've played.
@@bo0t3r29 either way I don't see 17'99€ being something "so expensive". For me expensive is DDogma2 for example, but not Nova Drift, but again, it may not be like this for everyone and that's okay.
I made one that has online co-op, not realizing how few of these games have online co-op. Hopefully we'll see more developers adding it.
Rogue Genesia is my favorite.
Death must Die just had an update that improves it a great deal.
I recommend Holocure and 3k survivor, will watch later of course. Merry Christmas in advance!
Merry christmas! Thanks for watching
amazing to see fabric of reality on here, its made me a retired geometry dash level creator formerly named GD Virus, famous for his "Battle of The Shades" series (it was actually just 1 level but he updated it like 4 times into something completely different)
sucks he rated it as bad it actually looks quite interesting, might give it a go
If you ever make another one of these types of videos here are a few more games for the list to consider An Ankou, Sea of Surviors, Fatalzone, Yet Another Zombie Survivors
Holocure is pure pain once u play the later levels
it goes from what builds do i do and what characters i should play to "mumei, miko please spam enough"
My favorite by far is HoloCure. I'm playing this game more than a year (since day one release on itchio site). And even recent plays finding something new and interesting. For example, three days ago foud out that Mumei's Friend can ignore animation speed cap of weapons. So I'm right now experimenting with haste and collabs and banned weapons slots leaving only two.
And looking at teaser-screenshot of 0.7 update. Rooms, keys, floors, limited weapons... We getting Zelda or Isaac mode?
I NEED TO KNOW THE GAME IN THE INTRO THAT IS NOT VAMPIRE SURVIVORS
great vid btw. I’ve seen this one and the other tier list and I’m now subscribed. Love the channel👍🏾
Thanks for watching and supporting it means a lot! The other two games in the intro are Nomad Survivor and Army of Ruin
You should try magic survival. It's on phones for free. It was the first game in this genre i played. It even came out before vampire survivors.
A few that do something unique are:
Timewasters > Gives you lots to do during gameplay, so never boring. Loads of content and varied systems. Frequent updates. Very grindy from the midgame though.
Boneraiser Minions > Attack with minions, instead of yourself. Adorable art style. Unlocks are frequent so the grind is minor.
Yet Another Zombie Survivors > It's 3D. Great reviews but I find it dull and super grindy.
Bounty of One > You only shoot when you stand still. 4 player co-op. Good variety of items/characters. Can get repetitive though, due to the stand still mechanic.
My problem with vampire survivors is that it melts your brain. Maybe my brain hasn't rotted away enough yet to just deal with it, since I don't use tiktok, but the game is just the epitome of sensory overload.
I have every achievement in the game, but I also had a couple of nights with horrible sleep because of it.
Don't play it for too long and especially not before going to bed
It's really hard to say which one is my favorite.
Vampire survivors(I only have 80h), Soulstone Survivors(115h) or Death Muys Die(15h)
That last one really enchanted me. Equipment system, dialogues, The Difficulty!!!
brotato is in 4th for me
I just found this video and saw a clip of Nomad Survival in the beginning and was curious to know where it stands, but then realized it doesn't stand anywhere. I laughed because this happens way more often than I'd like to admit. Bit of a curse with the game.
It's an 'ok' game. I added it to the list but realized i hadnt played it in a couple years so i just decided to remove it as i felt the list could get too long. it was just meh
I've only played Vampire Survivors so far, but I'm in love with it. Looking for another good one for the Nintendo Switch.
Brotato has come out somewhat recently on Switch. I'd defiantly recommend it
Yet another zombie survivor is a good one, too. I have lots of hours in it.
Agree, fun, dynamic and pretty-also being actively worked on.
That game has great gameplay value but i hate that it becomes zero progression very early on.
Honestly, Brotato is ok at best, and halls of torment, while I own it and 100% it, it’s bland and doing runs can be a chore more then fun. Every run takes forever to ramp up or get going. It’s just too slow for the genre I think. Death Must Die is S Tier and Holocure being free makes it S tier all by its self
I reccomend Time Wasters.
The map and interactions with it were really mind blowing to me. Although its just one map every run feels different enough because of the different upgrades and superweapons.
The different characters and metaprogression are also great.
Huge fun for some hours 😊
Bonaraiser Minions ,one of the most unique of this new genre
THAT'S ONE I FORGOT... I knew I was missing a few good ones, like 'Yet Another Zombie Survivors"
100% agreed. My favorite by far
Boneraiser is fun and I should really play more of it.
@Burr_ today I tried a small game that came out this summer called Disfigure, try it and let me know what you think
Before all these games, there was Crimsonland. It's a 2003 game.
Void scrappers and boneraiser minions are 2 of the best VS clones I've came across.
Hey, is there any horde survivor game like Brotato that has the auto save mode. Like if you dc you restart on the latest wave
I feel the closest thing to Brotato in terms of quality is God of Weapons, but im not 100% sure if it has autosave
nimrods guncraft survivor recently added a ton of content to the free demo.
it's showing a lot of promise!
Soulstone survivors is my confort game, I have 60h in it and still haven't unlocked everything, great build variety too
And you still haven’t felt the unlocking has gotten more grindy? That’s good to know
@@Burr_ Im at 450 hrs in soulstone. Game is amazing. You dont have to do the harder content but you level up your toons faster, and they just had an update last week that gives each character another outfit, but they all unlock at level 170. So to get them you have to hit 170 on every character for their individual outfit, which perfectly corresponds with a maxed out skill tree. To spice things up there are 2 runes to mess with. Gambler, which picks your skills for you at random, and omnipotent, which allows you to randomly get any skill in the game you have already unlocked, not just from your class. Keeps the grind interesting. For the record I only have one of the 14 characters above 170, but i dont do the hard stuff after i unlocked everything, could get there much faster. As you can tell, I love this game. LOL
Sometimes it can get a little grindy but I think the variety of stuff you can try while unlocking everything makes it more enjoyable overall. I just wouldnt recommend playing a character you don't like just for the sake of unlocking everything, unless you really like the core gameplay replay.@@Burr_
Its a great game and the devs are nice and responsive
Interesting list for sure. Death Must Die is likely to be the best in the genre once the systems are fleshed out and we get all the item tiers. Truly a special title, just very early.
Yea I am very intrigued to see what they do with it.
Nope, Deep Rock Survivors will win
Vamplikes have the advantage of having a formula that defines the genre (Timed Stages, Absorbing the life force of enemies to get stronger, roguelite-progression and upgrades), and thus are easy and quick to make while you are able to focus on designing the setting, adding your own spin, etc.
Its very close, in my opinion, to its own unique genre that distinguishes itself from Horde/Tower defense and roguelike games.
Happens every time. Pubg came out and BR became popular. Tarkov comes out and so on

There's so many ones you you haven't mentioned that it'd probably take an hour or more. Probably the biggest one missing from here is Rogue Genesia. You MUST check it out. Another great one to look at is Crafty Survivors.
Missing Picayune dreams, What an absolute perfection in the horde survivors genre with amazing music, story, weapons, and graphics
Brotato really is my one and only. Every game feels a bit bad now after playing it :D
Love your Videos ❤️ keep it up and stay healthy
Thank you for watching and supporting! Means a lot. Happy holidays and stay healthy as well!
My issues with 20 Minutes Till Dawn is the color palette, cant tell you how my hearts ive lost due to the enemies and summons blending into each other. I don't know, mybe this is just a me problem lol
I think you can do something about it in the options
Nice list. Gotta love the brotato hype
Thanks for watching!
Twilight survivor introduced me in this genre which Im already done now time to checkout every survivor type game on switch and steam~~
My issue with 20 minutes til dawn is that it really feels like no matter what character/passives/runes/weapon you choose, like you said it is always just objectively the strongest option to go hard on summons which arent unique to any charactee
i've been playing since it was free on epic a couple weeks ago. i've had multiple runs where i only pump the guns and cleared +5 playing very casually. the key to the gun focused builds is surviving up to a point where the guns are suddenly broken and you smash everything.
Witchcraft Survivors is a good one that came out recently and it had a demo.
Holocure is by far the best horde survivor next to Vampire Survivors. It's amazing!
I think to fight death you have to do a run with all the difficulty enhancers turned on for Death Must Die. Still working thru it myself.
IMO the two big names left off this list are Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde and Nordic Ashes. Nordic Ashes might be the best in the genre tbh.
Apocalypse party is a great new game that is in great tier list for sure, play it and you'll be surprised how good it is
Nordic ashes is about to pop off, & great dev team
No Boneraiser Minions? If you havent played that, you should check it out.
Halls of Torment gotta be my fav so far, just wish it had more maps
It will come with time that's for sure. I'm excited to see 1.0
Rogue: Genesia is great, and also has very short playsessions instead of 20-30 minute slogs
I just got that game in my email im pretty sure
you should try out "disfigure" its free and in my opinion a great hoard survival game because of the versatile builds you can make and the darkness feature
Can you do this video again in march with all the new games and also the games in your "has potential " ranking ? because there at least 5 new games and the other had some updates
If i have time i can do an updated one in the future. March is busy with a few indies i have my eyes on like Pepper Grinder and me going to PAX
Try out Apocalypse Party , I enjoy it a lot and it uses the same assets of Soulstone Survivors but it's great and doesn't take it'self too seriously.
ah yes i played 20 mins till dawn and built a lilith virus build using the crossbow... it's basically getting all the death effects making it so that a death of one enemy spawns several attacks making it like a virus that spreads throughout the enemies... BE CAREFUL THE GAME MAY CRASH
You should also try The scarlet tower and Yet another zombie survivor... they're so fun... 🥰
You missed Boneraiser Minions. Also very fun!
Rogue Genesia is another neat one. Player can reach insane heights of power.
I think i have a copy in my email or steam, on my never ending to do list
I recommend Yet Another Zombie Survivor. Its fantastic as well
I leave the suggestion here for Vampire Hunters. It is a first-person horde survival game
You should try Apocalypse Party! It has some bad reviews because some people encountered crashes, but I haven't had any and I play on a potato😂 I had more fun on it than with Death must die tbh.
Just reminder that Brotato on Google Play isnt the same game as the one on Steam, it's made by some diffrent comany and has microtransactions.
U should play Nordic Ashes. Its so good
This genre exploded thanks to Vampire Survivors (I personally just refer to them as Shmups). The price to play time is usually always worth it, only a few exceptions. There's still tons of them out there, these are some I played:
Boneraiser Minions
Bounty of One
Gunlocked
Her name was Fire
Keeper's Toll
Kill the Crows
Nomad Survival
Project Lazarus
Rogue: Genesia
Scarlet Tower
Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde
Tiny Rogues
The genre that NEVER ends.
Also, you would consider Tiny Rogues in this genre? Interesting for sure, but I can see the argument
You should try Rogue Genesia, i think its an unique spin on the bullet heaven
What about Bio Prototype ??? The best Vampire Survivors clone imo.
Wow what a list
wow whata comment from the awan
What about Yet Another Zombie Survivor or Deep Rock Galactic Survivor? :) There's more survivor games: Breedland, Spirit Hunters or Fatalzone :D I will try some from comments. I love this type of games!
DRGS wasnt released when this video was made, and YAZS is one on my list, never heard of the others though
Genre is called "Reversed Bullethell"
You should check out Bio-Prototype. It has a cool weapons system.
the f2p one Holocure has AMAZING soundtrack
'cause it's remixes of original Hololive songs
Vampire survivors is a Magic Survival clone.
I had a blast with Deep Rock Survivors.
My second top is after VS is definitely Time Survivors
Nice Hyuck shirt

Nuclear Throne should do a game like this in that universe.
