Hades and Returnal do a great job of having a roguelite that you play to "arrive somewhere" (the former more than the latter) as opposed to most roguelites where you just play for the sake of each individual run being fun (which is totally fine). I wish there were more Roguelites like that, where there's an actual story

I'd say the main charm of Isaac is the cosmetics, it adds so much to the random feeling of each run because it's not only the effects or projectiles, but you also got the combinated cosmetics of the characters. I have 470+ hours on Isaac, and I believe I will never be bored playing it.
There is so much strategy in isaac, you can really manipulate the game to make insane builds. It really rewards experience. I tried many other rouge lites, but for me, too often it was just about, you find this and this weapon, see how far you can get with it. These days the newer rouge lites are better at giving players options to customize their builds, and it's great but to me there will always be something special about the freedom you have in isaac.

Was waiting to see where you ranked Neon Abyss, and no dice. Its probably my favourite of the genre. And as a couple others mentioned, Into The Breach and Sythetik are both very good. Both are worth checking out. Synthetik also has a sequel but I've yet to play it.
Well done review man! Very fair assessment on each of these roguelites! I'll definitely have a rewatch of this video whenever I feel confused as to which roguelite to play! Keep rockin it man! :)
Thanks for making this tier list -- these things are always entertaining. Looking forward to your next iteration, which will hopefully include Slay the Spire!
One Step from Eden is a great game. Plenty of different build paths and multiple characters to play as. Maybe high A/low S tier even though the runs can sometimes feel too long.
You did a much better job this time my friend I was one of those people that said how is ror 2 not in your last tier list and I also was mad about your Issac rating but A feels more realistic especially with your reasoning. I still think it's S but I can deal with A. Crab champions is sick NGL
Just wanna say risk of rain 2 I believe should be s tier I have it on switch, Xbox and pc, and I played the first one as well. From the music to the artistic style to the difficulty to the characters to the enemies to the amount of things you can do in each run(combing artifacts and/or combining different items) I believe it is one of the best probably games I’ve ever played
It's deceptively simple, being very complex with tons of tech and item synergies. It's enjoyable for both beginners and veterans. Not to mention the incredible lore behind the game hidden in details in the maps and that you can piece together in the log books
Try Voidigo, Blade Assault, Doomsday Hunters, Vault of the Void, Ring of Pain, Roboquest, Deadlink, Soulstone Survivors, Beneath Oresa, Crawl Tactics, Immortal Tactics: War of the Eternals, Ember Knights, Brutal Orchestra... You forgot about Into the Breach and The Last Spell. Hyper Light Breaker and on my wishlist. ;-)
"Hyper Light Breaker and on my wishlist." I forgot the name of another game. I wanted to say: "Hyper Light Breaker and Wizard with a Gun on my wishlist." ) Thank you for giving me a heart (Like).
Missing games off the top of my head: - Downwell - Ziggurat - Iratus - Slay the Spire - Monolith (now called Star of Providence) - Spellbook Demonslayers - Soulstone Survivors - Sunless Sea / Sky - Renowned Explorers - Guild of Dungeoneering - Kingsway - BPM - Halls of Torment - Despotism 3k - Runers - Nordic Ashes - Atomicrops - World of Horror - Hand of Fate - Dicey Dungeons - Crypt of the Necrodancer - Into the Breach
Thank you for providing an unbiased review. I would like to suggest adding Slay the Spire to the S tier. Initially, I found it difficult to beat even at level one. However, as time passed, I learned to appreciate the game's amazing deck building mechanics. I have played it for over 300 hours now and it continues to be a favorite of mine.
This is an awesome list! I would suggest adding Monster Train, Moonlighter, Tangledeep, Slay the Spire and Don’t Starve to your rogue backlog. Those are all some of my faves and definitely worth trying!
Great to see Brotato in the list this time! It's definitely my favourite of a lot of the games ive played, ive spent over 200 hours in the game and love it to pieces, enough to even write an entire steam guide on it to help people starting out, and strategies for every single character. So if anyone is looking in the comments to see if they should get one, i can personally suggest Brotato highly. Super fun, and so much to do!
I love Noita and the wand building is so cool it's just so frustrating how a really good run can just evaporate in under a second. The sheer amount of things that can completely blow through a full health bar in less than my reaction time even takes to register I took damage makes me rage
I love Roguelikes probably my favorite genre. I to have played most of the ones you did. But you missed a major one. Synthetik is literally my favorite Roguelike of all time and still is. I have almost 500 hours in it and still play it a lot solo and co-op with friends.
One of my fav rogue like games is soulstone survivors, especially with the new update. would recommend as even a fresh start if built right can finish the game. the replayability is AMAZING.
I tried Slay the Spire for the first time this year coming from a MTG background. I really loved it, put like 40 hours, got asension 5 or something like that and then got kind of burned out. So I started searching for other deckbuilders that run well on steam deck. I bought Wildfrost and tbh, at first I really didn't get it but not in a "it's too hard" kind of way, more in like a "I'm not understanding how to exploit this game", because at the end of the day, thats the whole point of roguelites from what I feel like. After like 15 hours I got my first win which felt lucky but after that run I surprisingly completed other 3 runs in a row with different "strats". The ending btw is very special and a really cool twist which I highly recommend beating it just for that. Anyway, what I'm saying is that I don't think Wildfrost has an issue being hard but it doesn't convey how to play it/strategize correctly so it feels hard at the beginning. It's a fun game, definetly on the high B tier for me, you should give it another try! Tip: x4 and x5 heroes and cards are very strong!
Great games: Atomicrops, Dead Estate, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Undermine, Luck be a Landlord, Backpack Hero, DR LIVESY ROM AND DEATH, Dicey Dungeons, Going Under, Just King, Legend of Bumbo, Moonlighter, Ring of Pain, Slay the Spire, Spelunky, and above all (at least for now) Shogun Showdown. If they keep up the good work then that game is an easy A possibly S tier for me.
Crab Champions is unironically very good and very fun with a lot of replayability haha. RoR2 should definitely be S tier especially because of mods but I understand the A rating haha
Ship of Fools is a lot of fun, even in single player, but it is much better in co-op. There's some meta-progression upgrades that help out, but when playing solo you really need to find synergies that help you beat enemies. Once you have a decent handle on things, the first boss is usually pretty easy, but if you haven't found a good synergy by the end of that, you are going to have a tough time in the second act.
skul is not a heavily rng game but what i have noticed is that every run can be cleared as every run has a theme you need to pick up on and take the right items
Great list. My current jam is Halls of Torment. A Vampire Survivors inspired game with a Diablo 2 aesthetic. Tons of characters with different skills and a meta upgrade system that uses equipment. You definitely should check it out
Heyo, thank you so much for including us and for the lovely rating! Enjoyed the list a lot! I'm glad to hear you keep your eyes out for updates too, as we are currently working on many cool things (just had a steam news post about it) :D
Since I played almost all the S tier games in this list I decided to try the game I found most interesting that wasn't S tier in this list. Choice fell on Dome Keeper. Perfect game in its scope, you can really feel a strong game design among other very nice things. I'd say it's not an S here just because it's not a very "big" game. Even more appreciated played after the disappointing Cult of the Lamb. Thank you for the fun.
Great tier list, it surprised me dozens of times. Just think you could have included Atomicrops, definitely one of the best and most creative roguelikes out there! It's just so underrated :(
I am a casual indie roguelites gamer and my current favourite is "Slice and Dice". I think, I've played easily more than 100 h maybe over 200 h. Pros: You"ll always find new mechanics, combos and synergies while playing, since there are a lot of items, curses, blessings and characters. Cons: IMO, some high tier items dont feel like that powerful and a good run can be killed by a REALLY bad turn with 2-4 blank sides (which doesn't happen that often). All in all, when I replay it, it doesnt get boring and thats what I want from roguelites.
Coming straight from the previous tierlist and it's definitely Better. I also liked the fact that you added on most games the amount of time you played since helps to understand how much you digged in the game. I agree on most of the games, like Curse of the Dead Gods and Have a Nice Death. I had the same feeling. This time I HIGHLY agree with you about Isaac. I had like 90 hours so I know many would Say I Just completed the tutorial, I like this but I'm not so addicted to the game; of course I play It with the Item description Active, it's a Nightmare without It! Finally, there's a lot of good game I never played until now that I'll try to include even on my small Channel. Thank you for your work man, super appreciated!
Excluding modded Risk of Rain 2, my favorite Roguelike has to be Dungreed, the game is just incredibly fun to the point that the only roguelike that beats is an already S tier game filled with awesome mods
I’d love to see this list with Slay the Spire, Dead Estate, and Halls of Torment added, especially the last two, since we know that Slay the Spire is S-Tier Any thoughts on Dead Estate or Halls of Torment??
I have seen a bit of Hells of Torment and it looks very good! Dead Estate looks like a game I would enjoy as well. Twin stick action shooters, right down my alley
Great list! Gives a good overview of what is available when people are looking for another rogue-lite fix. Besides Slay the Spire I would also suggest looking at Monster Train and Astrea.
Honestly ive had so much fun playing ship of fools with my partner. There's fun meta progression, and also a huge skill curve (first boss felt really hard, then second, then third, etc. - but once you learn it and get the feeling down it becomes way more manageable). To each their own, but its certainly not a D tier game imo, especially with a friend. Side note, the game becomes much more manageable with designated roles. My girlfriend manned the stronger turret the whole game, i focused on reloading/maintaining ship with a sentry turret
Actually a super solid list. Anyone who's looking for another S-tier roguelite should check out Griftlands. Klei is always an incredible studio, and the production quality on Griftlands just blows everything else out of the water imo.
I enjoyed Griftlands for a while, but the actual gameplay started to feel bland too soon. Decks fall into set archetypes, there is just too much hard synergy and not a lot of space for creative deckbuilding. The actual RPG-like structure is really cool, I wish the game was better in the card battling regard, the potential would be astronomical.
A really slept on roguelike I wish more people tried was Going Under. While it's not as content heavy as the other games on this list the unique gameplay and artistic style is what makes me feel like it's worth mentioning.
Isaac is overrated. It's a pillar of the genre and can be argued to be the most IMPACTFUL roguelite to be made, but it has been outclassed at this point. So many games just have so much better gameplay or mechanics. I love Isaac and have put my fair share into it, but anyone who says it's an "easy S tier" are the ones who actually no nothing of the genre. I'll also say; it's crazy how much of a downgrade DD2 is compared to DD1. I really don't think the devs understand what people liked about the first game at all.
There is not a single Roguelike in the market with the same replayability or build diversity as Isaac, not even close, i have hundreds of hours in the game and if i pick it now i know i will end up with some crazy builds ive never did before, no other game does it like Isaac did, looks like youre the one who knows nothign about the genre and/or Isaac, and dont even get me started on how that "little" game has a crazy story and alot of the characters and items have very deep religious meanings.
Sifu would be considered a Roguelite instead of a Roguelike. Basically Roguelites you can keep certain things when you start your run over such as weapons or skills. And Roguelikes you start over with nothing.
I’d been sleeping on Inscryption until I saw it was the only S tier I hadn’t played in this list. Downloaded it free on ps+ and sunk 5 hours into it immediately. Game is absolutely amazing, S tier for sure, fantastic video! Thanks for the pro tip
You need to play Crypt of the Necrodancer. It is the most difficul roguelike I've ever played and one of the most fun for sure. It is a mix of roguelike and rhythm game. Rogue Heroes is also great and it is a mix of roguelike and RPG adventure.
True, it's a really skillful game but I agree with just one point of his - iFrames, they are like..almost non-existent, since it's not that you get hit and that's it - you can get a full combo of an elite swordmaster to the face for half of your hp to be gone unless you play full Constitution, then it's more like a third of it gone. The other and only issue I have is with Dark Avatar of the Eagle - he can hp regen, I get it but it should be illegal for him to regen while he stands in the middle of the storm he created, cause you either come close enough to get contact damage from the storm or you let him regen all of the damage you've been dealing carefully for the past few minutes.
I misjudged the binding of isaac too, and regret it cause a friend gave me a copy of it for the psvita, and lost it in a flood. But been playing it on my switch every once in a while
Streets of rogue and rogue lands are also two incredible games you should try sometime. Streets is just hilarious and fun and rogue lands holds a special place in my heart
I am just now getting into roguelikes and i'm having a blast. Dome Keeper and Wizard of legend were fun little introductions to the genre and now i'm a few hours into Hades and it is absolutely amazing. Sifu has been on my list for a while as well, so that'll probably be next.
Thank you very much! even tho you did not like some of my personal favorite as much as I do. you open my eyes to many roguelite I will buy and enjoy because of this video^^ seems I have alot of fun ahead of me still and I was thinking before I played all good roguelite so have to move on to other genres^^

i got into nuclear throne very late, but it easily became one of my favorite roguelites of all time.
The sequel we've been waiting for. Great work 🙂
Was waiting to see where you ranked Neon Abyss, and no dice.
Thank you! Thanks for watching and the kind words. Glad this video can help you find some games!
Thanks for making this tier list -- these things are always entertaining.
Looking forward to your next iteration, which will hopefully include Slay the Spire!
Next one hopefully next year. Maybe Slay gets it own video
Noita too!
slay the spire , Roguebook , Rogue Lords (pleaseeee look at Rogue Lords) noone knows about that game!
"Griftlands" is an incredible rogue deckbuilder.
One Step from Eden is a great game. Plenty of different build paths and multiple characters to play as. Maybe high A/low S tier even though the runs can sometimes feel too long.
At 30-40 mins it's longer than Hades but on par with Dead Cells or Gungeon. Good timing, I feel.
If you considered fear and hunger a rogue like i would highly recommended it
“C tier .. thats good. That was me in high school.”
That earned a sub in and of itseld
You did a much better job this time my friend I was one of those people that said how is ror 2 not in your last tier list and I also was mad about your Issac rating but A feels more realistic especially with your reasoning. I still think it's S but I can deal with A. Crab champions is sick NGL
Thank you for the very nice comment and watching and supporting
Just wanna say risk of rain 2 I believe should be s tier I have it on switch, Xbox and pc, and I played the first one as well. From the music to the artistic style to the difficulty to the characters to the enemies to the amount of things you can do in each run(combing artifacts and/or combining different items) I believe it is one of the best probably games I’ve ever played
it should be double S tier with a huge gap between the rest
then S tier FTL, Slay the spire, Dead Cells and Immortal Redneck in no order.
@@Snailing_Suikahave you played tboi repentance?
Missing games off the top of my head:
- Downwell
- Ziggurat
- Iratus
- Slay the Spire
- Monolith (now called Star of Providence)
- Spellbook Demonslayers
- Soulstone Survivors
- Sunless Sea / Sky
- Renowned Explorers
- Guild of Dungeoneering
- Kingsway
- BPM
- Halls of Torment
- Despotism 3k
- Runers
- Nordic Ashes
- Atomicrops
- World of Horror
- Hand of Fate
- Dicey Dungeons
- Crypt of the Necrodancer
- Into the Breach
Atomicrops and enter the gungeon is prob the ones that clicked with me the most. Cult of sheep
Streets of rogue
Thank you for providing an unbiased review. I would like to suggest adding Slay the Spire to the S tier. Initially, I found it difficult to beat even at level one. However, as time passed, I learned to appreciate the game's amazing deck building mechanics. I have played it for over 300 hours now and it continues to be a favorite of mine.
Such a hidden gem channel
Thank you!
This is an awesome list! I would suggest adding Monster Train, Moonlighter, Tangledeep, Slay the Spire and Don’t Starve to your rogue backlog. Those are all some of my faves and definitely worth trying!
dont starve has some rogue aspects to it but i think it would be better classified as a open world survival game
If don't starve is a roguelike game then hardcore minecraft is as well
Spelunky 2?
@@guilhermebarao4866 Maybe, but Don't Starve is more roguelike than Darkest Dungeon 1 - and it's also on the list.
not having slay the spire on a list like this is insane, such a legendary game
Great to see Brotato in the list this time! It's definitely my favourite of a lot of the games ive played, ive spent over 200 hours in the game and love it to pieces, enough to even write an entire steam guide on it to help people starting out, and strategies for every single character. So if anyone is looking in the comments to see if they should get one, i can personally suggest Brotato highly. Super fun, and so much to do!
Care to share links to those guides you made?
Personal favorite Rogue Like is Noita. So much replayability, so much variety, so many systems. I have 1100 hours in it and still play it daily.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about it
I love Noita and the wand building is so cool it's just so frustrating how a really good run can just evaporate in under a second. The sheer amount of things that can completely blow through a full health bar in less than my reaction time even takes to register I took damage makes me rage
so funny how you always „only played a game for x amount of hours“ for me playing a game for 10 hours already is a lot 😁 great video 👌
Haha sometimes i feel like I dont have enough time in some games. but thanks for watching and supporting
Check out Rogue Genesia, you won't be disappointed I promise. There's a free demo.
If you want to play another Deckbuilder I have two recommendations for you: Monster Train as a roguelite and Steamworld Quest as an RPG
@@Kejosruler Didn't liked monster train since it was hard to read on my steam deck and the aesthetic didn't quite did it for me
@@LucasVogel Awww too bad! A friend and I had a lot of fun with the game
Cool video. Love your open mindedness on these games. Very refreshing. Subbed
Thanks for the kind words and watching Means a lot
Brotato description: You survive 20 waves...
Me: When? I don't remember that part 😅
Lot of great games on that list in my library that deserve more playtime from me
Crab Champions is unironically very good and very fun with a lot of replayability haha. RoR2 should definitely be S tier especially because of mods but I understand the A rating haha
Crab champions was very surprising to me
Honestly for me I would say mods make a lot of roguelites into S tier for me. Slay the spire for example was fun but mods made it S tier.
Where's Noita
Where's Synthetik
Where's Monster Train
Where's Crypt of the Necrodance
Where's Vault of the Void
is hollow knight included?
You definitely should check it out
I actually have played it a little after making this video! AMight be my 2nd favorite horde survivor after brotato!
Hmm looks great but still early access
Love the list! Would love for you to try and play Noita and I’m very interested where it would site on your tier list 😂
I think i might do an end of year list for whatever games I play so hopefully Noita can sneak on
Your S Tier list is enough for me to be like... "Yo this guy is the realest."
Thank you for watching and supporting. Glad my S tier list is good to some people
@@Burr_ if Roguelikes had a Bible your S-tier list is on thar page lol.
Slay the Spire was down there but never got put on the tier list??? It's even in the thumbnail
Wizard of Legend being that low is criminal. That's easily S tier for me, and at the very least A tier.
Heyo, thank you so much for including us and for the lovely rating! Enjoyed the list a lot!
I'm glad to hear you keep your eyes out for updates too, as we are currently working on many cool things (just had a steam news post about it) :D
I read that post and am VERY excited to see those updates when they're ready. I LOVE the Dome! Thanks for watching and supporting!
@@ernaldo1848 Wow thank you! I appreciate it :)
Great tier list, it surprised me dozens of times. Just think you could have included Atomicrops, definitely one of the best and most creative roguelikes out there! It's just so underrated :(
Thanks for supporting! Atomicrops is one in my steam library, but never had the time to get too it
I am a casual indie roguelites gamer and my current favourite is "Slice and Dice".
Absolutely agree, especially now that the massive new update came out. This is the only mobile game I have ever spent money on, it's so good
honesty I'm really biased about enter the gungeon but the tier list is VERY solid. *cough cough* enter the gungeon best game *cough cough*
Thanks for watching and supporting! Gungeon one of the greatest of all time for me
Coming straight from the previous tierlist and it's definitely Better.
How did Noita not get into this list? 😭😭 enjoyed the video though
half of these games aren't even roguelite and neither is noita.
@@vilerite Care to elaborate? Look up the term rougelite kido.
You should add Against the Storm and Rogue Tower to your list. Very interesting takes on the genre and pretty fun :D
I’d love to see this list with Slay the Spire, Dead Estate, and Halls of Torment added, especially the last two, since we know that Slay the Spire is S-Tier
Any thoughts on Dead Estate or Halls of Torment??
I have seen a bit of Hells of Torment and it looks very good! Dead Estate looks like a game I would enjoy as well. Twin stick action shooters, right down my alley
Slay the Spire auto S tier. Too good.
The giant tortilla hanging on the wall behind you looks delicious.
I also am loving Cult of the Lamb Schawarma
I’m so late to this party, but my most recent roguelite addiction is Blazblue Entropy Effect, the combat and variety is so clean. Love it
Great list! Gives a good overview of what is available when people are looking for another rogue-lite fix. Besides Slay the Spire I would also suggest looking at Monster Train and Astrea.
A rogue lite tier list by someone who doesn't actually like rogue lites
???
Are you high when typing this comment?
Honestly ive had so much fun playing ship of fools with my partner. There's fun meta progression, and also a huge skill curve (first boss felt really hard, then second, then third, etc. - but once you learn it and get the feeling down it becomes way more manageable). To each their own, but its certainly not a D tier game imo, especially with a friend.
Side note, the game becomes much more manageable with designated roles. My girlfriend manned the stronger turret the whole game, i focused on reloading/maintaining ship with a sentry turret
I think it’s probably because he hasn’t tried the co-op. It’s so much better with co-op I loved it playing with my partner
Awesome list , me personally I've gotten all achievements on RoR2 and TBOI so im a little biased, i gotta try more games on the list though
its criminal how Streets of Rogue isnt on this list
Actually a super solid list. Anyone who's looking for another S-tier roguelite should check out Griftlands. Klei is always an incredible studio, and the production quality on Griftlands just blows everything else out of the water imo.
I enjoyed Griftlands for a while, but the actual gameplay started to feel bland too soon. Decks fall into set archetypes, there is just too much hard synergy and not a lot of space for creative deckbuilding. The actual RPG-like structure is really cool, I wish the game was better in the card battling regard, the potential would be astronomical.
I stopped watching as soon as he said he only had 30 hours in the binding of Isaac and proceeded to put it in A instead of S
Ok. Grow up
Thirty hours? That's basically just the tutorial.
Sifu B tier?
People have different opinions
Fun video! I would love to see you rank Halls of Torment next time.
Thanks for watching! Next time I do any sort of roguelite ranking it will be up there! Great game
A really slept on roguelike I wish more people tried was Going Under.
While it's not as content heavy as the other games on this list the unique gameplay and artistic style is what makes me feel like it's worth mentioning.
I’ve had my eye on this one for a bit. The aerator is defiantly unique
Hey thanks for watching and supporting! I’m glad you’re enjoying it, it truly is a wonderful experience
good vid appriciate the time you put in :)
Thank you! These tier lists are always a lot of work. thank you for watching and supporting!
I haven't played 99% of these so this is a good overview of the genre for me to check out
Enjoyed the list. I would highly recommend the roguelite Star of Providence (used to be called Monolith). It's one of my favorites!
Will need to look it up! Also, love the metroid profile picture! Top tier
You need to play Crypt of the Necrodancer. It is the most difficul roguelike I've ever played and one of the most fun for sure. It is a mix of roguelike and rhythm game.
Rogue Heroes is also great and it is a mix of roguelike and RPG adventure.
Number 1# for me at moment is Balatro amazing rougelike deck builder
If you ever return to making a list like this PLEASE include Deadlink, that game needs so much press because it’s very underrated atm
Curse of the dead gods being in C because of skill issue is wild 💀
WAY BETTER RANKINGS this time around! Enter the Gungeon, darkest dungeon, FTL! Nailed it bro, great vid
this dude looks sooo baked in all of the gameplay footage hahahaha
Monster Train is up there with one of the best roguelikes and most replayable; A tier at least.
Thanks for the great video. And you may want to split Tape to Tape part cuz that section is also involves Tiny Rogues.
Thanks for watching and supporting and thanks for the heads up! Mistyped it in the description and never noticed
Like chess but haven't player Into the Breach? Now thats a lost soul, because ITB is basically chess 2 with giant robots.
A revised list and still no Synthetic Legion Rising
I am just now getting into roguelikes and i'm having a blast. Dome Keeper and Wizard of legend were fun little introductions to the genre and now i'm a few hours into Hades and it is absolutely amazing. Sifu has been on my list for a while as well, so that'll probably be next.
If you're still looking for good rogue like games, try "The Last Spell" and/or "Heroes of Hammerwatch"
Thank you very much! even tho you did not like some of my personal favorite as much as I do. you open my eyes to many roguelite I will buy and enjoy because of this video^^ seems I have alot of fun ahead of me still and I was thinking before I played all good roguelite so have to move on to other genres^^
Spelunky is the grandfather i reckon (2008)
