The Cuban Sandwich That Reigns Supreme in Miami | Legendary Eats

- With the largest Cuban American populations in the country, it's no surprise the Cuban sandwich reigns supreme in South Florida. The ham, cheese, and roast pork combo is not to be missed during a visit to the Sunshine State. Sanguich de Miami makes the legendary Cuban sandwich almost entirely in-house, which isn't the case at every Cuban restaurant. From the seven days its cooks spend brining ham, to the pickles they make in-house, to the Cuban bread specially made by a local bakery, every ingredient in this sandwich is intentionally prepared and cared for.

That’s a nice bread to filling ratio.

I'm from New York but tried one in Florida once and it's legit the best sandwich I've ever had
After living in Miami for 7 years, and now living in the Pacific Northwest, the intense craving for a true Cubano is constant. There is a food truck 30 miles away that does something like a Cuban, but its not the same. They don't even use Cuban bread. This weekend, I'm going to be making the Cuban bread from scratch to see how if I can. Eventually, I'll be able to make this entire thing at home.
How did it go
Please tell us how it went
Cafe Con Leche in Seattle is the closest you'll get. It's also my most favourite place to go to. Their Pan Con Lechon is amazing and to die for

I Love Cuban sandwich & Cuban food, in general. It's pure comfort food. The way its marinated and cooked for hours, results in the most delicious flavors you will ever experience.
Sometimes you will find a restaurant so secure that they will show you completely the how and why. Their pride in their heritage shines through. They simply wanted to do this accurately. Watching this made me realize on my last trip to Miami that I went to the wrong restaurant. Their sandwich looked correct, but wasn’t good. When you find someone that says don’t put the mustard and pickles together....they demonstrate understanding. Next time I will come here. Price won’t matter. Luckily we do have one place in Dallas with a good Cuban. Small Cuban population I suppose. Damn this pandemic! I need to go right now!
48 year old Miami native here. I can absolutely vouch for the sandwiches at sangwich de miami. Almost everything here is amazing. The only thing I don’t agree with is the pan con bistec, which is way not traditional. It is a good sandwich though but everything else is traditional but elevated. The owners are there all the time and it shows.
I moved to Miami about 20 years ago. At first I was in love with food and the coffee, and ate on Calle Ocho all the time but after about a year I realized that Cuban food generally sucks. Cuban bread is horrible and the quality of the pork is bad. I will give this place a try because it looks like they are trying to move the quality up a notch or 5.
I have been to this place a lot. It is without a doubt the best Cuban sandwich I have ever eaten. The croquetta preparada is also incredible. The owners are there all the time too.

Just got back from Miami, wanted to give it a try and honestly it was one of the best Cuban Sandwiches I had.
I pretty much had a Cubano everyday at different notable places and this one was the best!
Tampa has the best Cuban sandwiches where they were invented.
Lies again? Cold Storage Support Indonesia Malaysia
True fact: the Cuban Sandwich originated in the cultural district of Ybor City in Tampa, Florida. It follows the basic structure: roasted pulled pork, sliced ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and dill pickles. In some stores or restaurants, they also add Genoa salami to honor the Italian immigrants that also settled in the area. The Bread is important, but it has to be baked a certain way, with the use of a palm leaf to give it the signature crevasse in the top crust. Certain bakeries in Tampa -- chiefly La Segunda and Alessi's -- carry this tradition to give our local Cuban Sandwiches their distinct look.
I don't doubt that folks believe they're getting authentic Cubans in Miami, but if you want to get the ORIGINAL and AUTHENTIC sandwich, you can find them in Ybor and many other places here in Tampa.
Yor are correct, Tampa originated the Cuban sandwich and living in Tampa I get to enjoy them often !
The Cuban sandwich was delicious. It's dawn right now and I'm thinking about eating toast.

I LOVE a good Cuban sandwich. Ugh, this makes me want one right now, lol.
Looks amazing.
I'm going to Tampa Florida on my birthday for 2 weeks this year, i'm definitely going to try this legendary sandwich.
I had a cubano in a place called CAFECITO in Central Chicago. i miss it everyday
After I watched “Chef” I came up with my own recipe. My ex-wife’s family used to roast a pig in la caja china, so I knew what seasonings to use. We used to marinate the pig for 2 days in homemade mojo sauce. I ended up using a slightly spicy mustard with half sour pickles. I added prosciutto just like in the movie. Holy shit, was it delicious!!!
What seasonings did you use?
@@KTBFFH for the pork
marinade I used sour orange juice, oregano, garlic, bay leaves, and salt.
Some recipes say to use an orange juice/lemon juice substitute, but using the sour orange makes a huge difference.
This sounds so good!
A Cuban sandwich (Spanish: Sándwich cubano es) is a variation of a ham and cheese sandwich that likely originated in cafes catering to Cuban workers in Tampa[1][2] or Key West,[3] two early Cuban immigrant communities in Florida centered on the cigar industry. Later on, Cuban exiles and expatriates brought it to Miami,[2] where it is also very popular. The sandwich is made with ham, (mojo) roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, and sometimes salami on Cuban bread.[1][4][5][6][7] Salami is included in Tampa, where there is a large Italian population, but is not usually included in South Florida.[8][9][10]
I’ve never seen it as a “come and go” this is a masterfully done appetizing meal
Looks delicious!!! Can’t wait to try it!!!!
Looked great. I'd like to try that someday.
I love a good sandwich! When I visited Miami at the start of the year from the uk, the Cuban sandwich lived up to expectations 🤤
While good, the Miami Cubano is inferior to the Tampa version which includes Genoa salami and bread made with lard.....yes, LARD.
@@JGW845 sounds damn interesting to me!
@@JGW845 they literally say in the video that they use lard in their bread for this specific restaurant 😂
@@BRan863 "El Segunda" bakery is THE place to get Cuban bread and other baked goods. The best sandwich is to be enjoyed at the Columbia on 7th Ave in Ybor City but other places make sandwiches nearly as good. Not to be missed is the "Devil Crab," a Tampa specialty. Best described as a "croquetta," it is spiced blue crab meat stuffed in a "dough" made of stale Cuban bread and deep fried. Served with hot sauce and COLD "Jai Lai" IPA with some cole slaw on the side it is heaven! Note: Transplants refer to it erroneously as "Deviled Crab" but it is uniquely a Tampa delicacy and it is called "Devil Crab!"

It is cool that people come from Europe to try it.

This cubanos such a work of art.. can't wait to get my hands on them!
I went to this restaurant when it first opened. I have been thinking about this Cuban sandwich for the last 2 or 3 years. I'm long overdue for another visit.
I'm going to be having one of those in less than a month now...I can't wait to compare it to the one I got in Tampa Bay at LA Segunda Bakery. I don't know if there is a bad Cuban sandwich but I think I could eat one every week for the rest of my life!
Tony, if you had a Cuban at La Segunda you had one of the best if not the best. Miami will not really compare as they do not have the same "Cuban bread" as La Segunda and use what looks more like a hoagie roll.
Went to Miami this weekend for a Cuban sandwich at Versailles!
That looks so good!
Amazing! I, want to experience this cuisine, and culture. I'll be traveling this summer and Miami is one of my destinations. Thank you for posting video. Very good. Respect and blesses.
Man. Those look outstanding. Seriously outstanding. The carne asada sandwiches in my area (SW USA) are outstanding. Couple places have excellent Philly's and occasionally really good roast beef. This all said. Yeah.... A great Cuban sandwich will knock your socks off. I was actually envisioning taking the wife unit out there once the Rona lightens up to check it out.
I always wanted to try this cubank sandwich, looks amazing🤩🤩
Thanks for making excellence!!
That sandwich 🥪 looks so tasty. I always liked Cuba and now i like even more
I love Cuban sandwich I’m from Miami born in Miami and I’m proud to say the Cuban sandwich was not born in Cuba it was born in Miami is a Miami icon
actually the original cuban sandwich was born in Tampa
@@travellergst1564 actually the Cuban sandwich was made in pre-revolution cuba, almost 100 years old now in 2022, in later years after the Cuban revolution, the “cubano sandwich” was a thing of the past and was re-created in Tampa Florida, 2nd home of the cubano sandwich.
She had me at "no mayonnaise" ❤

So beautiful. I would like to fly there now just for a Cuban Sandwich!
Same here!!! Same applies to flying to Maine for a "Lobster Roll" sandwich!!!!
This look just like a Chimi here in DR 🇩🇴, gotta love them carribean food , much love to all cuban out there ❤️
I grew up in Queens, NY in the 60's & 70's in a multi Latin community especially Cuban Americans. There were many Cuban restaurants there as well as in the areas of Union City, NJ, Manhattan & Long Island so I have eaten hundreds of Cuban sandwiches throughout my life especially now living in Miami since 1979. I have never had a Cuban sandwich like the one made in Sanguich. All the components are made in house using old fashioned time consuming techniques. It is MARVELOUS! Thank GOD that I live nearby. Can't wait for their Coral Gables location to open because they are always packed at their SW 8th street & 21st ave. location.
This Cuban is unbelievable.
The only sandwich recognized and approved by us Floridians that isnt a Pub Sub
Second that 😂😂😂😂
Third that👍
Damn but absolutely nothing like a Chicken Tender Pub Sub made just like how you like it... and especially when you didn't expect it to be on sale that week!

Delicious Cuban sandwich
man this sando is beautiful!!!
My husband, our kids and I, drove across the country from California to Miami the little Habana just to try a cuban sandwich. We had to try the real deal. We found cuban restaurants here in California but there was something about the sandwiches in the little Habana that oh man, We can't wait to go back!! 😋
My first cuban sandwich was at Porto’s bakery in Burbank, Ca and I wasn’t impressed. I’ve never been to Miami but I don’t doubt these are leaps ahead of what I got at Porto’s. Even the ones I make at home are better.
When you go to Miami you also have to try a Cuban frita. It’s a Cuban style hamburger with a twist(the meat is chorizo). In my humble opinion as a Cuban man they taste better than a Cuban sandwich. Also don’t forget about Cuban pizza and a medianoche sandwich.
I went in August 2019 - absolutely loved it! And the Timba (guava and cream cheese milkshake) will live on in my memory forever. Yum!
This show is the embodiment of America.
Oh god ... This looks so good
one my fav things to do in Miami
Around the same time - about 1896 - a Sicilian named Francisco Ferlita created a new bread at his Ybor City Joven Bakery. It was a little like a French baguette, about three feet long with a hard, crispy crust and a soft, airy inside. The top was scored with a palmetto leaf to create a canyon down the middle of the loaf. It was square on the ends and usually shortened with lard. He called it Cuban bread.
Though no hard proof exists, anecdotally the mixto became popular on Cuban bread. Thus the modern Cuban sandwich was born. The preparation is simple, but specific: Cut the bread in half, then layer ham, mojo-garlic marinated roast pork, and salami, in that specific order. Then add swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard spread on top. Lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, and whether or not to press the sandwich are still topics of heated debate.
Yas!!!
I love Cuban sandwiches but the Ybor [tampa] style is the best version.. other than the medianoche
Im Cuban-american but most of my family are from Cuba, the cuban has alawys been kinda meh to me, the medianoche is where its at.
Tampa represent miss ya! Im in Texas now cant find a decent cuban sandwich here! LOL
Ybor Cubans add Genoa salami......

"I will not be part of ruining the sandwich". Man, I've wanted to say that to SO MANY customers. It's like 'Get it the way it comes or don't bother.'
I would say the same. Mayo on a Cuban, although tasty bc I’ve had it, is sacrilege!
I wouldnt be surprised some idiot might wanna put catsup in it !!!! =\ Id take it away from him, give him his money back and throw him out !
Really wish there was a good source of Cuban food and coffee here in NS, Canada. This sandwich looks amazingly delicious, really like that they stay true to the original and won't deviate i.e no mayo, only mustard.
New York City and New Jersey should have some good Cuban food. Their is a good amount of Cubans up there.

In Tampa, where the sandwich is said to have been created, you can get a Cuban with salami and it’s fantastic
It did originate there. In Ybor City, before Miami was even incorporated.
Tampa is the birthplace of the cuban... get it correct
@@bcast9978 But Miami made it main stream, outside Ybor City, you will never see a Cuban with Salami, the Bread is 100% better in Tampa, the best places in Miami always brought the bread from Tampa with the signature Palmetto leave.
