You did a great job and I approve. 🇨🇺 🥪 ❤️ If anyone is wondering, traditional mojo is made with sour orange juice- no zest- but using half lime and half orange will taste very similar, and is something many Cubans do. It isn’t made with chilis, cumin or mint. We use onions instead of shallots and dried oregano instead of fresh. Your sandwich assembly is pretty spot on. The most traditional way is mustard on one slice and butter on the other. This looks VERY tasty and like an elevated Cuban sandwich.
You’re Cuban and don’t use Cuban oregano instead of the dried crap from Publix?
Shallots are better for marinade then Onions as they do not have the strontg onion spell but still contain all the wonderful onion flavor. Im puertorican not Cuban but that change to the Mojo was fine. My gripe was that he removed the bone fromthe pork, just butterfly the meat open and keep the bone in as it releases alot of flavor.
@@homunculus7 my only issue was with the chili and the lack of sour orange. Everything else I can live with
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but you get a better, more balanced flavor if you put the Swiss directly on the mustarded bread and place the pickles between the cheese and meat. This separates the acidic ingredients by a layer and actually makes a huge difference.
Source: grew up eating Cubanos my entire life and the best places always did their sandwiches this way.

As a Cuban myself , I think your sandwich looks very good. The pull pork or shredded pork version is something that was created here in the US. When I lived in Cuba , the Cuban sandwich always was made with slices of roasted pork leg.
The cuban sandwich was made in the US though
@@kameronpeterson3601 A lot of people debate that the sandwich was made in the US while others emphatically proclaim it came from Cuba itself. However, the above comment is correct either way. The sandwich most commonly eaten in Cuba involves a thin slicing of pork and ham, usually because these are somewhat harder to come by. Additionally, the idea of a ham and cheese sandwich (the original before either Cubans or Americans decided to add roasted pork) was brought over by the Spanish long before anyone invented the modern day Cuban sandwich
Yeah. Exactly in Cuba instead of pulled pork they put lonjas inside of the sandwich. It looked amazing though. The bread was the thing I liked the most. Is the most similar thing to a real “flauta de pan” I have seen since I left Cuba
@@kameronpeterson3601 The idea of what eventually the Cuban sandwich, more known as “un mixto” is from Cuba. It was refined and molded into what it is now known as the Cuban sandwich in Miami. Source: Parents emigrated during the Mariel boat lift and grandparents on both sides also 100% Cuban.
@@kameronpeterson3601 bro, the sandwich was created in Cuba. Just because Cubans in Tampa decided to spread it like butter across the US while my country sunk in the dark ages thanks to communism that doesn't mean it's from the US.
My uncle is Matt Salgado, a scarcely know Cuban chef but even Bobby flay has had him on his show. And this is perfect. Exactly how he’d make his besides putting a palm leaf in the split for the bread. Makes a world of difference. Also a little mojo in the pan while toasting so the bread absorbs. Love u man.
Absolute must for Cuban bread is the palm leaf! Also try the Tampa Cubano. Just add Genoa Salami.

For those wondering, since his book came out recently, the book states "Reserve 1 cup of the marinade to use for dipping; refrigerate, covered, until needed" and also recommends that it can be used in other applications.
This was so critical for me right now. I’ve been trying to figure out what the purpose of saving that 1 cup. He says he will use it on the sandwich but doesn’t. I’m just going to use it on the marinade.

Hands down...one of the best takes on the cubano. This is what sandwich perfection looks like!!
It’s one of my favorite sandwiches. In the world. I’m from Louisiana and Tennessee. I know a little about sandwiches. The bread is as important as the pork. It’s like getting a shrimp Po-Boy in Metairie, using that Leidenheimer bread. I spent three days in NO trying to find the right bread. Had to drive to Bear’s to get it. Completely worth it. Real Cuban bread has a three hour shelf-life, just like that Po-Boy bread. It matters.

As someone who grew up making lechón several times a year, but especially on Christmas Eve (aka Noche Buena), Josh’s mojo recipe is pretty spot on! Obviously every family makes it a little differently, but mine 1) uses white onions instead of shallots, 2) does NOT use mint (that’s for mojitos smh), and 3) makes it in a food processor instead of a blender, so it’s still a little chunky. Also, if you live someplace where you have access to sour oranges use those! The lime and orange juice is a substitute for people that don’t have sour oranges, since they really only grow in tropical climates.
