- Billy Goat Tavern, established in 1934, is a burger institution in Chicago, known for its double cheeseburger made with thin, all-natural beef patties served on a kaiser-roll bun. The original restaurant - which was a tavern across from the Chicago Stadium - was born when a goat fell off a passing truck and wandered into Greek immigrant William Sianis' tavern. Sianis adopted the goat, grew a goatee, and was nicknamed Billy Goat. This quirky tavern, known for its Cheezborger, is no stranger to famous faces. Its walls are adorned with clips from the Chicago media and pictures from visiting politicians, and it was even parodied on "Saturday Night Live" in 1978.
Insider visited Billy Goat Tavern in February 2020. You can still order Cheezborgers and more for pick-up, or you can order online. For more information, visit: www.billygoattavern.com/

Why do we say “all natural beef.” Like were we ever serving non natural beef from Chernobyl?
That’s a good point. Natural in the food industry means the product doesn’t contain any filler, flavoring, colors, chemicals, or preservatives, and that it’s only minimally processed. It’s possible to have meat that has some of these things and that would not be able to be called “natural” meat.
If you look at frozen burgers in the grocery store all of them are not 100% beef. They mix the beef with soy. Read the ingredients next time you there

I'm so old I remember seeing the skit on SNL!
The Billy Goat Tavern was great because of the bar where you could find iconic Chicago reporters from both the Tribune and Sun-Times hanging out and arguing about everything. That was what made the place iconic. The food was made famous by SNL but the food is nothing special. It's all about what has now become a tourist trap restaurant. However, if you sit and drink at the bar like a regular, odds are you'll meet some actual Chicago personalities.
Maybe 40 or 50 years ago you would
There are no more Chicago personalities. Studs and Royko are pining for the fjords. There's like a Roeper guy, Royko bullied him and he needed years of therapy. I don't think he eats burgers.
The burger is OK. You can load up on pickles and onions. You can get Berghoff's dark at the bar, or at least you could when I went there for lunch in the early aughts. It wasn't a bad combination. Iconic? Legendary? Nah. A fairly tasty burger with a lot of pickles and onions and a nice dark beer. Not overpriced for the neighborhood. No celebrities, no personalities.
