@@jw7305 no, it was put on UA-cam 8 years ago and released on hbo in April 2011. It was 3 months from being 10 years old when I wrote that comment, but now it’s def been over a decade.
It's a testament to Chris that he can patiently sit back, listen earnestly to the conversation and the other three waxing poetic about the craft for an hour, and find the opportunity to destroy the room with one offhand line, "Does he do the whistle?"
I went to a comedy show in Boston years ago where Dave Chapelle showed up with zero material. Just started interacting with the audience and building jokes from it. Might have been the funniest show I've ever seen.
It might be because it was all specific to your audience and comedy is built largely from shared experience, so it very well could have been stuff he’s thought about enough for it to BE a joke but it was presented to you as stuff only you guys are hearing and that intimacy gives another layer to that shared experience, making it more effective. Brilliant
Andrew Dice Clay has an album called "The Day The Laughter Died" that is basically him going onstage, making terrible "jokes" and insulting the audience. You'd think it'd be terrible, but it's hilarious. Probably the only actual funny thing the guy really did.
"Does he do the whistle?" Chris Rock with the funniest moment in this hilarious hour of great comedy. Four excellent perspectives on humor from four maestros.
What I realized is the difference between the average comedian and a true comedian was that line. 25 years of Louis CK, a good comedian, having this story about a failing average comedian with the "sitting on a cock cuz im gay" bit and he didn't come up with a punchline for it. In 2 seconds, Chris Rock comes up with the punchline for the bit.
+Giuseppe22 there is a part to the song 'sitting on the dock of the bay' where they whistle. Chris Rock wanted to know if the performer did this part for his version of the song 'sitting on a c*ck 'cause I'm gay'.
Critical Nobody and the people who are offended seem so ignorant to how Rock and CK have attacked the n-word in their bits. If you saw Bring The Pain, you know EXACTLY what CK is referring to when he says “nigger” in this show. CK is practically quoting the bit in reference to what Rock is saying about him. If you saw Chewed Up, you know EXACTLY why CK would say “nigger” instead of “n-word”. While it’s unfair to expect everyone to be familiar with every aspect of all four careers involved, there’s a context for everything that’s going on. It’s a manufactured controversy.
I’m confused as to how a white video game reviewing neck bearded incel tells me how I should feel about two white men saying nigger lool it’s beyond me
"what was your first bit you thought was funny?" Ricky: "oh i remember this well." Chris: "he just made it last week." and everybody missed that shot. shame.
not that they missed it, it was just too obvious for their level. Those commedians grew up roasting each other every single day..you can only imagine how high the bar is.
Yep. You can genuinely tell that the conversation is a little bit difficult for Chris in places. Look at his face when Ricky says his comment about poor people.
34:55 "Does he do the whistle?" Chris Rock was the most silent of all and mostly listening, yet here he said the funniest thing of the hour and made everyone crack up

@Ella Rose Strongly disagree. In my opinion, whether or not we think what he did was messed up or not, he brings a quite different, introspective , and most of all, extremely well articulated perspective to the conversation. Having watched it many times, I feel like he kind of acts as a glue that holds it all together, almost like a host.
Only difference is that Carlin literally had a special every year while i don't think CK has done quite that. Though he is insanely gifted. Probably my favorite
@Daniel Clark yeah but he appeals to a larger audience. You can not even like standup and like Jerry Seinfeld but if you love standup you probably don't like Jerry Seinfeld.
all these guys are used to having a platform to just monologue and go on for as long as they want, and its so funny watching them try to figure out how to not talk over each other.
To me, It feels like there's anger or tension throughout most of the conversation, but in reality I realize they're actually displaying unity with different types of comedy from different types of comedians and doing a damn good job at it. I like it.
So much has happened after this show... a brit, a jew, a black guy, and a red headed mexican walk into a bar... greatest comedians of the 21st century.
Ricky Gervais is honest and hilarious, so honestly the slander against him I don't understand lol ^^ but hey, to each their own. I love Ricky so I'm not annoyed by him
I liked to spoof songs in College and I came up with that Dock of the Bay bit myself over 20 years ago! I doubt it was me He heard it from, but as silly as it is I felt a bit of pride watching these comic legends laugh over it!😀
This is such a great conversation because it feels honest. They are laughing at each other, disagreeing, saying things which obviously offend or annoy each other. Feels behind the scenes.
I disagree. I'm not even a fan of Kevin Hart (i find him abrasive and annoying) but the dude can craft a good damn joke. He can make me laugh in spite of my cross armed distaste for him. He's paid his dues and he KNOWS the craft as well as ANY of these heavy hitters. Switch out ANY of these 4 for Kevin, and the conversation will have been just as rich. And again, this is coming from a guy who AVOIDS watching Kevin Hart movies/comedy specials
There are only so many comedians on this level and are able to intellectualize it like this. They’re expensive to get in a room and honestly, hearing them talk too much about it would take away from the magic.
UA-cam should be filled with this kind of thing. Actors, comedians, musicians, or whoever talking shop among themselves without a moderator, interviewer, or immediate audience. Pure gold.
I agree. I love listening to the pros be it comedians, actors, musicians etc. talking about their craft or behind the scenes of their careers. And especially without an interviewer that may ask dumb questions or interrupt constantly. Some people think it takes away some of the magic knowing too much about them but for me its the opposite. I think I enjoy them more.

He's back and Hollywood cant keep him away. I mean look at how Ricky Gervais savaged the fuckers just a few days ago st the golden globes. The Fandom Menace has succeded in helping wreck the overly woke bs culture there. Louie should never have been fucked on the level he was. I could watch these guys talk everyday. It's the most interesting dynamic. They all have different views, styles, arguments...it's incredibly engaging. I'm convinced that comedy scratches a different surface in this world, which reveals deeper and deeper layers, that the audience simply isn't aware of until they examine why they laughed in the first place.
sweatykills jackson Laurel and Hardy are comedy legends, so is Charlie Chaplin. Not one of them is a legend and quite frankly non of them are funny, except Louis C.K. he sometimes has some good stuff.
Chris Rock breaks the mold of "if you have to explain a joke it is not funny." Dude somehow took a rule of comedy and broke it while leading us on a path of comedic understanding. Like he made the path of understanding his joke as funny as the final pay off the joke itself.
@@ralek592 I know I was fucking dying at the joke. Pretty sure Will got a good chuckle out of it before his whip cracked his ass up on stage for finding it funny.
@BumbleBeePenis ! I’m willing to bet that most people aren’t going to understand wtf you’re talking about. You’re trying to be funny? You really think he steals jokes? Elaborate
That may have something to do with the way television and radio works in Britain. The BBC controls everything and if they don't like something, you're a virtual pariah when it comes to broadcasting anything outside of the internet. They are all about perfect production & organization and have pretty strict rules about how things should work. I think Ricky's apprehension over how he's being presented on telly has a lot to do with that sort've "indoctrination" from the BBC.
This is fascinating. Besides the obvious, also just the little social dilemmas that come up. Like Louis wasn't having a conversation with everyone, he was pitching to Jerry. His eye contact rarely left Jerry, and every opinion he had he looked at Jerry for approval. But also Jerry and Ricky had a slightly antagonistic relationship. Ricky not being afraid to disagree with everyone, and Jerry disliking his crassness. The "That was very funny Ricky.." sarcastic jab. Amazing.
But then again, they often were the two that turned and laughed with each other, seperating themselves from the other two. Jerry and Ricky just have that relationship, from what I've seen in other interviews/interactions.
100 percent. Always stuck out to me that line, above all else. These guys that have worked so hard in the clubs for so many years and cracked it - and one guy who wrote an amazing sitcom and did stand up off the back of it. And he's still funnier than most stand ups.
Even when they're not telling jokes or laughing I love it. These guys are all famous for their perspective in one way or another which holds up the comedy. Steel in the walls.
My brother saw Jerry two times at the same venue a couple years apart and the dude did the SAME EXACT ACT. I don't care, that is not entertaining when it's live. I can watch and repeat a funny bit on UA-cam over the years and get a laugh out of a comedian several times over, but if I'm paying to see a guy I really want to hear new material....
Joshua Hanson he’s more renown for his comedic writing and acting. His stand up has always been the “have you tried airline food” old ass style comedy so it’s funny if you are over 70
That’s really cool because when Johnny Carson was a guest on Letterman later on after retirement, he mentioned that same exact toothpaste after dinner, mint joke as one of his favorites also
Charles Harding Ricky was interrupted a lot, but he was also talking a lot. And he was weirdly trying to be the arbiter. Chris was interrupted a lot, but he hadn't been talking a lot.
they all were, by each other. It's a four way informal conversation between friends, happens all the time and is fine. They were just hanging out, on camera
One of the best discussions of craft, any craft, that I’ve ever seen. It’s a privilege to watch four artists of their caliber discussing the form they love.
@@DunmoresMovieMania Lol, Louis, Chris, Ricky all seem to think he's talented. So does Eddie Murphy, Bill Burr, and lots of other legendary comics. I think they're probably better at judging who is funny/talented than your dumb ass.

The whistle bit was fantastic, I died when Chris said that. The whistle in the original song is just so carefree and happy it really makes the image of "sitting on a cock cuz I'm gay" that much more silly.
Louie brings a good point at 04:10. In the morning do something difficult (cold shower, a run for example) so the rest of the day is easy compared to that. Cheers!
I think Louis is the best of the four - actually, one of the two greatest figures in comedy history in my opinion- but I will say that I don't think he's worlds better than Ricky Gervais, or especially Chris Rock. I have big respect for Jerry Seinfeld, and think he was perfect for this interview for his prestige and overall knowledge/experience with comedy. He also contributes a lot here, and I think he was a great invite and a near-perfect fit. But in terms of actual direct comedic impact, I think he lags behind his 3 companions. My opinion and taste, of course. I just have to stress that I do think he was a good choice to be here, regardless, and I think he's a way above-average comedic talent. The "problem" is that in today's world, with the Internet, where we can watch what we want, when we want, a "really good" guy like Seinfeld is stacking up against the best ever; he doesn't deserve the scorn heaped on his head by the spoiled masses, but I do understand WHY they say he isn't in the league of the other 3. But even I have to admit if you could have substituted out Dave Chappelle for Seinfeld? Godlike magic would surely have come about. If Ricky Gervais hosts another of these, I pray that Dave is invited and accepts. Ricky, Dave, Louis, Chris Rock. Hell yeah. Big time. In my opinion, the Greatest Comedy Figure Ever is a competition between Louis CK and Dave Chappelle. Louis's just been so much more prolific at a high level that he's pulling away, he's just producing so much at a relatively rapid clip, and showing no signs of slowing. But if Dave were to do another standup special, or SOMETHING... he's just a god, just so quiet lately on the stage in terms of readily-available new material disseminated to the far-flung public. I feel in my heart that Dave Chappelle has it in him to stomp his foot down and prove that he's the greatest ever. And with his family and desire for personal peace, I don't blame him at all for pulling back. He needs to do what is best for himself and his family, that comes far, far above what any comedy fans like myself or anybody else wants/feels. But as a worshipful fan of comedy, I just dream of him coming out with another HBO special or something. If I were forced to name the 5 greatest standup routines of all time, he'd have 2 of them, just himself. Talking Funny 2, if it's made, I hope they beg Dave Chappelle on.
IgnatzKolisch SEINFELD is just "really good"!!! are u f'ing kidding me!!! he the best observational comic ever!!! he observes day to day stuff and finds comedy in them, rather than splurting out fart jokes and racist jokes...he has never used the N word, only used the f word once or twice in his career spanning more than 2 decades. He's way ahead of the rest as a comedian, as far as talent goes!!! and as for making ppl laugh, even jim carrey can do that with his facial contortions and weird noises. p.s : Louise Ck and chris rock are one of my favourites' and awesome comedians , And about Richard, iI wud have to watch more of his stuff before i can comment on him
Prajesh Paul No, I'm not kidding you. I just don't like Jerry Seinfeld as a comedian as much as you do. He doesn't make me laugh all that much. Sorry, I can't help it. I didn't decide that I wouldn't like his standup, it just happened that way. I don't pick what I do and don't like, I just either like something or I don't.
I think people saying Seinfeld acts like he's better than others don't get that when he says things like that, usually that itself IS a joke. You have to pay attention to tone and context. It's meant sarcastically.

Zetus Brown seriously, nobody here has any idea what they're talking about, chris rock is a blatant misogynist and all of his jokes are topical/race oriented, ricky is a good writer/actor but seems too self-conscious to be witty in the presence of other comics, louis was pretty okay here but his stand-up has gotten stale recently, all he ever talks about is how old he is (he's in his 40s, literally the youngest guy in the room here) and how exasperated his kids make him. Seinfeld seemed to be the most interesting and wise character here hands down, he always has thought provoking things to say about the subtle minutiae of comedy and nuances in delivery that constitute good humor
he seems slightly nervous & uncomfortable to me...he goes for his water every time he's in the middle of talking like a crutch. just chill man...how someone like him that can perform in front of thousands of people still get nervous is strange to me.
On a body language lvl Chris is totally being wipe off by the others, lack of respect or consideration for him, even though it's inconsciously, Chris felt it
@@mracnababa8047 Maybe I'm sounding a touch harsh, but what's pathetic about it? Most starting comedians don't have the talent, vision or dedication of these comedians and never will. This is not to say they cannot make a career. It would be nice if they could be inspired by these guys, and the overall standard of comedy would be all the better for it. But the fact is, most comedians are far more basic, trite and pedestrian, and, thankfully for them, there's a market for such offerings.
@@MartinHiggins1972 Of course most of them don't. But this isn't for most of them, it's for the ones who can make use of it. And one of the best ways to separate the ones with talent from the ones without, is to give all starting comics advice like this, let them hone their skills, and see who produces something that's worthy.
@@immanuelcunt7296 Yeah, I wouldn't stand in their way. I think it's better to give them the basics first and keep building on that, though, until they max out. If I was teaching comedy, I like to think I would more or less sense what path and which material suited each individual.
It's funny reading the comments of people who think Ricky isn't on par with the other comics. That reads, to me, like you have no idea about comedy (but more likely think comedy is an American invention. Its not.). By far, the most talented man in the room is Ricky. I don't mean he's the best stand up, he has a massive amount of humility to play the novice, but his creative output towers over the other 3's put together. Jerry didn't write his 1 hit show, neither did Chris, neither did Louis! They had teams of writers! The Office, Extras and Derek were all written by Ricky, not to mention his record breaking podcasts! America also shunned Bill Hicks until after his death, then tried to claim they always loved him. Guess where he was popular during his life? The UK. 1 day the US will catch up with our comic sensibilities.
cmomofilm Comedy is a global thing, but louis is still funnier. And ricky was the least humble here, just how he is but still not so humble. And louis has complete creative control with his TV show "louie". You've got a real bias against americans. Look at the individual, not the nation.

RE: My original comment, I'm still waiting for you to tell me who Ricky and Steve's writers are/were?
Ricky jokes that “staying in the bit” for him is genetic, but I actually think he has a point. It’s culturally integral to British humor. A lot of British comics and programs do this thing where you never quite know if they’re joking or not.
@@Nova_the_starcatcher so... not everybody in Ohio then? this is pretty much the whole british comedian trope. being the clown so well that it's hard to tell if it's true or not. this happens in pubs, clubs, parties, a lot of us brits do this stoic, serious i'm telling the truth kind of bit, just to drag someone in only to surprise them with a punchline they're unaware is coming. if you're family does it, cool. but here, it's almost universal. or i should say "national".
You may have a good point. A lot of people can't tell if I'm joking and that's really part of the the humor for me. I like the fact that people aren't quite sure if I'm serious and the confusion is the best feeling. And I do appreciate British humor even though I don't even get it half the time lol
Watching British panel shows has warped my sense of humour entirely for that reason. Staying in the bit, deliberately misinterpreting someone’s meaning, none of that seems to translate to Canada when I try out that sort of thing here. Or maybe I’m just bad at it.

Never could understand that joke can you explain plz?
I went to a comedy show in Boston years ago where Dave Chapelle showed up with zero material. Just started interacting with the audience and building jokes from it. Might have been the funniest show I've ever seen.
"Material is for pussies"
It might be because it was all specific to your audience and comedy is built largely from shared experience, so it very well could have been stuff he’s thought about enough for it to BE a joke but it was presented to you as stuff only you guys are hearing and that intimacy gives another layer to that shared experience, making it more effective. Brilliant
He’s comedy genius.
Andrew Dice Clay has an album called "The Day The Laughter Died" that is basically him going onstage, making terrible "jokes" and insulting the audience. You'd think it'd be terrible, but it's hilarious. Probably the only actual funny thing the guy really did.
Wow that sounds pretty awesome. How do you know he didn't have any material?
"Does he do the whistle?" Chris Rock with the funniest moment in this hilarious hour of great comedy. Four excellent perspectives on humor from four maestros.
What I realized is the difference between the average comedian and a true comedian was that line. 25 years of Louis CK, a good comedian, having this story about a failing average comedian with the "sitting on a cock cuz im gay" bit and he didn't come up with a punchline for it. In 2 seconds, Chris Rock comes up with the punchline for the bit.

This conversation came out 7 years ago but NOW suddenly people are offended it.
Stop it and learn to laugh

Louie brings a good point at 04:10. In the morning do something difficult (cold shower, a run for example) so the rest of the day is easy compared to that. Cheers!
Louis C.K reigns supreme amongst these mortals.
He's just on another level.
He's way ahead of the rest as a comedian, as far as talent goes!!! and as for making ppl laugh, even jim carrey can do that with his facial contortions and weird noises.
p.s : Louise Ck and chris rock are one of my favourites' and awesome comedians , And about Richard, iI wud have to watch more of his stuff before i can comment on him
Prajesh Paul
No, I'm not kidding you. I just don't like Jerry Seinfeld as a comedian as much as you do. He doesn't make me laugh all that much. Sorry, I can't help it. I didn't decide that I wouldn't like his standup, it just happened that way. I don't pick what I do and don't like, I just either like something or I don't.
Ignatz, you are spot on.
It’s great to see three stand up legends and Jerry Seinfeld talk in depth about what it means to be a comedian.
Not sure if that was supposed to be a joke. Jerry was funnier than all three guys combined and he never needed to use profanity to get a cheap laugh
Steve Steve false, Louis CK shits on all of them
Chase Damon 90 percent of his jokes are about dicks and jerking off. He’s far from the best comedian out there
@@stevesteve0521 he never needed profanity, true. But he is still half as funny as louis
Ricky did just one special, he naturally talented but i wouldn't call him a legend for sure
I think people saying Seinfeld acts like he's better than others don't get that when he says things like that, usually that itself IS a joke. You have to pay attention to tone and context. It's meant sarcastically.
yep exactly.
***** He , along with Larry David created one of the most successful sit-coms in U.S. TV history ......If one uses $ as a measurement , he has achieved a level of success that puts him in a most unique catagory .
martialimitator I've seen him do some really arrogant shit in the past, from what I've heard he's quite the snob.
He definitely has that tone about him, just part of his personality. He was an innovator and he knows it.
martialimitator yeah, like Howard Stern proclaiming himself The King Of All Media, pretty clever shit!
Thank you for posting, awesome roundtable
pure comedy gold with a lot of wisdom and jewels.. and instead of soaking it all up, you guys always find a way to fuck it all up with your negativity..
Amen
I know right. Why can't they just appreciate everything as being great and leave their cynicism outside, especially on something as objective as comedy.
"B-b-but Seinfeld is so overrated and old!" Why the fuck don't I ever learn to stay out of the UA-cam comment section
Paddy Mc comedy is, imo, one of the most subjective thinks out there
Too bad Chris Rock got cut off so many times just as he was about to explain something.
he seems slightly nervous & uncomfortable to me...he goes for his water every time he's in the middle of talking like a crutch. just chill man...how someone like him that can perform in front of thousands of people still get nervous is strange to me.
He has a lot of esteem for these comedians, and rightly so, these are some of the best comedians out there right now.
On a body language lvl Chris is totally being wipe off by the others, lack of respect or consideration for him, even though it's inconsciously, Chris felt it
i didn't feel this at all the one who was awkward af was the brit. i think jerry is closer to chris irl than he is to the other guys.
yeah i don't think thats true. ricky was cutting everyone off
After 11 years this is still gold. Every starting comedian should see this.
Most starting comedians aren't worthy of this. It would be like showing a dog a card trick.
@@MartinHiggins1972 What a pathetic mindset. That is the point mate, for starting comedians to get better
I have watched this at least five times and it remains incredible entertaining.

Out of all the things you could quote from this 49-min-piece...
As witnessed by Chris Rock
L: "What was your first bit?"
R: "I know it really well."
C: "He wrote it last week!"
Damn that was good!
*first good bit
You messed up the whole joke :v
The UK. 1 day the US will catch up with our comic sensibilities.
cmomofilm I like rickey but don't even say for a second that louis ck is the true most talented stand up comedian alive
cmomofilm Comedy is a global thing, but louis is still funnier. And ricky was the least humble here, just how he is but still not so humble. And louis has complete creative control with his TV show "louie". You've got a real bias against americans. Look at the individual, not the nation.
***** Who?
***** So, to clarify, his "team of writers" is himself and Merchant? Great argument mate, well played. Although, all of the other people have credited wringing staff for their shows! So it looks like you know fuck all about comedy and have just made an *arse* of yourself by trying to seem like you do.
***** (Hit a nerve did I? LOL) I didn't try and disprove what you wrote about Jerry and Chris? That's because you just agreed they had writers you utter dunce! Then after agreeing with me you have the cheek to question my intelligence, while somehow not noticing you've just agreed with my point? Genius. So it *STILL* looks like you know fuck all about comedy and have just made an arse of yourself by trying to seem like you do, *TWICE* lol. RE: My original comment, I'm still waiting for you to tell me who Ricky and Steve's writers are/were?
Dude can’t believe I found this gem. This is so inspiring.
Ricky has this odd way of disagreeing when he actually agrees.
They had to pay a lot of money, they had to park. They got in a fight with their date... or whatever. That is such a Louis thought
Great 👍
Yeah he has to find the tragic and realistic part of it 🤣
why did i watch this whole thing at 3am
Cuz it was good bro
That's probably why you're watching it atm.^_^
Nexcyus same here, 5am
Doing the exact same thing. 7 months later. On the other side of the world. Why.
I read this as it's 3:04
34:46🤣 Ricky and Louis's laugh after Chris asks "does he do the wistle?"
The chemistry between these guys got me dead!
I love Ricky's reflex response time to prevent one of TV's most potentially embarrassing moments: a "don't leave me hanging" hi-five from Chris Rock.
I feel like Louis ck and Ricky Gervais connect in a deep comedic level.
Would love to see more of them discussing this topic.
Absolutely! I think your right
Yes. They get it.
Yes, I agree, they match on a deep existencial level. They proceed in very different ways though
Yea. I agree. Ricky trying to keep up with Louis and repeating shit like a parrot is pretty deep.
Ricky jokes that “staying in the bit” for him is genetic, but I actually think he has a point. It’s culturally integral to British humor. A lot of British comics and programs do this thing where you never quite know if they’re joking or not.
my family is like that and we are from ohio lol
That’s a very good point. And if they aren’t joking they might be angry with you. Perception and knowing the context.
The most respect I have for the manufacturer that was able to build a chair that can carry the weight of Jerry's ego.
Well he is a billionaire. I get it.
He's been at the top for literally decades. He's earned it.
@@ArielGTAcS idk hes never really made me laugh. Just pissed me off with how pretentious he is
99% of comedians fail. He became one of the all time richest. Who wouldn’t have an ego after that? And he worked hard for his success.
Why are shittin on a dude who built himself up from nothing, and did it only to make people feel good by laughing?
I forget how many times I've seen this. Never old
If Ricky was in a wheelchair this would look like an episode of Family guy
I wouldn't say so. He seemed to be the centre of attention for more than 1/4 of the time. Chris Rock has been left out and spoken over the most.
What's the joke then?
Judah Lewis Or if he was a dolphin 🐬 😂🤣
why do you find this banter comical then?
Louis ck as quagmire..... because he likes to whip it out
