Robert wrote this song after the band performed in Iceland. He's always been inspired by histories, myths, legends and lore and incorporated many bits into his lyrics. The film was taken from a concert in Australia, however the audio was taken from a live performance in California and matched up to this. This live version can be heard on their album How The West Was Won which is a compilation of the best from 2 shows in California. There isn't a lot of live footage of Zep in general for several reasons; 1 - good quality camera/video didn't exist, 2 - it wasn't the norm to have a music video for a song, and 3 - manager Peter Grant didn't allow film or recording at concerts and would confiscate people's equipment if he saw it because he didn't want bootlegs out and about to draw money away from the band.

Somewhere there's a grandma having a conversation with her granddaughter about when she was a young girl, girls had to behave like ladies! But, the conversation was a little different in granny's head, "Whew! Thank goodness there's no pictures of me sitting on that dude's shoulders and flashing my boobs at that Zeppelin concert!"

All the band members are shredding in this song.....but John Paul Jones is absolutely killing the bass line here. He and John Bonham have the bottom end so locked down that it's a jam session all on it's own.

I always think of Plant's war cry as an imitation of what the hero is hearing as he is on the edge of death: the cry of Valkyries, come to take the fallen to Valhalla. It has the unhinged, shrill quality of a Banshee's wail, freezing the blood of those who hear it, resigned to the horrors all around, and calling on the warrior to defy his fear of Death and battle on, against men, against Nature, against his own weakness, in search of a fate worthy of the halls of legend.

Lastly, i know I left y’all a long list of some of my favorite Zeppelin in a video awhile back but today I’ll just focus on one that I don’t recall you doing and is my most favorite and forever and always will be my favorite Zeppelin song: “Ramble On”.

He likes seeing them in the 70's because let's face it....the 60's and 70's was the best era's. The song was written on a return trip from Iceland, where Zeppelin had just played. Hence, the lyric coming for your western shores. But there is the double meaning. The song is referring to the Viking conquest of England.

Zeppelin is always "better" live due the their improvisational nature lead by Paige, made playful by Plant and kept in line by Bonham. Jones just waves between these brilliant mad lads. It was a potent and rare combination of talent and skills that you only get a handful of every decade or so. Skynyrd and Floyd are in the same vein.

FYI "Kashmir" is off "Physical Graffiti" & "Immigrant Song" is off "III"
No Robert Plant is not an immigrant. And, the song was written on the plane while flying into Iceland for a show. For more of the story look it up. About some of the Vikings immigrating to colonize Iceland & parts of North America

There's an excellent remake by Trent Reznor with Karen O on vocals. She's from the alt band The Yeah Yeah Yeahs...it was done for the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"....

I went to see super Tramp in the 70s in an outdoor baseball Arena that no longer exist. It wasn't uncommon to see bands this way. We didn't have mtv. This looks like original footage. He is talking about the Vikings. They went on a tour of Iceland. Yes, it's a Viking war cry.
