    I met the designer and owner of Roxon at SHOT show in Vegas in January. He is a seriously awesome guy and designs all of their tools. Our booths were in the same isle so we all were in and out of their booth all week. I was truly amazing at the price points on their products. They all feel great and the replaceable blades in SO MANY profiles are awesome, but that comes on different tools. Just wanted to say seeing them pop up in my notifications from you was seriously awesome. I would support them as much as possible! Great guy! The language barrier was hard but he had a young lady with that helped with that and she was very knowledgeable too!

    Speaking only for myself: I always factor in the high probability that I'm going to lose the multitool. So, a 30 dollar multitool is a great option for me. Also, for that price you can afford to buy several in order to add one to a get home bag or survival kit.

    Between this and the Mossy Oak we’re seeing genuine quality as well as innovation at a fraction of Leatherman’s price. I really, really hope they’ve got something new and special cooking up and honestly I haven’t been impressed with Gerber or SOG for their price points.
    Also I absolutely love the tool release switch this brand is going with. It’s so much better than digging things out with your fingernails.

That ferro-whistle is badass imo, and like you said if I could buy it separately I'd definitely add it to a bunch of small kits. I just might have to add it to the shopping list, maybe even two of them, one as a gift to someone.

    Thanks for another great video. I've been looking at a few videos on multitools this weekend. I started out carrying a Gerber multitool . I've had it for over twenty years and its still going. The pliers have lots of play and are out of line now. I mostly carry a Swiss Champion for work. Now I'm thinking about getting a new multitool. The knockoff's are really getting close at a better price. I still like the lifetime warranty that Gerber offers. I will keep this tool a long time.

    This Roxon Flash is such a compact and well thought-off tool. Scissor. They need to think of something and add some scissors to this thing as well. I understand that would make a dent in their Phantom sales maybe, but this is so close to ideal as it is.. your suggestions are spot-on. They need to add a layer and insert a basic scissors. Great useful large scissors, if you need them, then you can go the 802 route but they are such a useful item in your pocket that even a relatively basic one will be a great help.

    So far chinese brands are actually doing original and impressive engineering.
    I mean they include a lot of shears as secondary main tools which is something you pretty much don't find in other brands. I mean often you have one or the other.
    I think some multitool designs should be about a couple of big tools and a few mini tools. It will end up to be a sort of 6 - 12 in 1 but the tools will be better because they are mostly big.
    And yeah with better steels, other companies have to do innovative combinations and modularity, mostly there is a lot of room to create multitools with ratchet drivers and innovative ways to incorporate them. There is scissor pliers wich I think doesn't exist in a multitool I think, ajustable water pipe wrenches, and plier wrenches. I think other ideas like screw pliers, circlips pliers... I mean there is many things to combine and specializations to make.
    Like multitools for electrician, mechanic, plumber, Hvac, gardener, electronics repair, wood working, because it's still the case of multitools being a lot oriented towards camping and outdoors activities. I'm not blaming the existence of those, however, I do think covering more the rest is something to think up, because I think multitools can be either an emergency tool, a tool to be resorted without getting a full tool set or simply getting a lighter tool box / pouch.

      Hey I'll take that extra 60 bucks of you're just gonna throw it away. Lol I've owned both name brand and quality modern knock offs... I've had less issues with this. Granted, there's always variables.. that's just life.. idk what you do for a living, how you use your tools.. However, while it is cool that Leatherman has a lifetime warranty.. what good does that do if you have to keep replacing it instead of it just getting the job done? His main point and the main point of modern budget MTs is that a tool that costs 30 bucks is 9/10 compared to the "10/10" (not always the case) that is Leatherman, or Gerber, or whatever. The difference in price is not always worth that 1 point anymore.

    Hi, it's funny you mentioned Leatherman's pliers problem. Just yesterday I've had to use my Curl and Spirit X pliers for a small task. I didn't put much tork twisting, but had to grip quite hard. And my Curl got so stiff and difficult to open. I have it for three monts, and it got so smooth, and now stiff again. I've had similar issue with my Free P2 that I've sold. No problem with Victorinox though. I still like and will use my Curl. I'm truck driver and it's everything I need. But Leatherman definitely need to take some action, and they do I guess with discontinuing staff 😂 Cheers 👍

      I love Leatherman, they're my favorite multitool manufacturer. The only company that can compete with a great reputation and longevity is Victorinox. I recently purchased the Curl and like the fact, it has no serrated blade and wood saw. I think the Wave, Curl and Bond are wonderful EDC carries. For my outdoor tasks and chores the Surge and SuperTool 300 are great. There's pros and cons to all multitools

      @Richard Sullivan I absolutely agree with you. We are all different and like different stuff, we use them for different applications, and you'll get what suits your needs. I think another factor is the location. Maybe in US make sense to get something that's manufactured there. I'm in UK, and so far didn't have any issues with Leatherman's warranty. But so far I didn't have to use Victorinox warranty for a plier based tool though. I've used it for the SAKs, they refurbished my Handyman for free, for my Forester I've had to pay £10(13$) but I've modified it so much, I didn't expect of that to make it like new again. Take care 👍

    This is the never-ending cycle of the marketplace...people are looking for a better bang for their buck, as the prices of the big boys are going into deep space...if QC was more consistent, I am sure these offerings would get more market share...there will be folks that will continue to pay top dollar, but others want to see what else is available, as a consequence, videos like these are important, as they show the competition is growing...LTG's thinking is short sighted, for example, as they seem to think they have none...Good job!

      The surge for bushcraft? Its an amazing tool, but shares some of the same issues as the signal. Unfortunately it also has even worse ergonomics. I definitely need to make a video about this. • @lvhdmya4807
    @lvhdmya4807 Рік тому +4

    Nice I'd definitely get one or a dozen. 5Cr though is markedly inferior to 420HC. But that price difference is ridiculous and puts the Signal out of contention for most of the world.

    • @clintwestwood3539
      @clintwestwood3539 Рік тому

      It’s not even that far off. From my experience 8cr is already a tad bit better than 420hc, 9 and 10cr are already WAY better in both edge retention and toughness while having the same sharpenability.
      I’d say that 5cr is way closer to 420hc than what people think when you use them both. I do agree, however, that I’d like them to use some better steel, but already 9 and 10cr are huge improvements. I see so many Chinese companies doing good treatment on s35vn for under 60$, I don’t see why they couldn’t implement it. That would just put a nail on Leatherman coffin.

    That Multi tool looks like a very good option for a pocket multi with pocket clip that doesn't cost nearly $150. I might have to pick one up and give it some pocket time without using the sheath. Multi tools that cost under $50 are great for just trying out as a good pocket Leatherman pliers style multi tools that you can actually just try out without killing your wallet by costing over $100 easy these make a great option for that. Then if you have tried out the budget multi tool and find out that you don't enjoy or it doesn't fit as a good option for what you wanted it for you can throw the tool in your car for some extra tools or maybe a tackle box and you haven't lost $120-$150. For that reason I think that I am going to pick one up and try it out if I don't like it I can put it in my emergency tool kit that I keep in my car and I won't be angry for spending $150 and it not work out. So thanks for the review, examination and additional information on this budget minded tool.

    I believe Leatherman tools are better, at this point. What’s slowly killing LM is their cost. And I do not mean the component cost. It’s labor cost. A Signal costing $140 is ridiculous. I bought mine 6 years ago @ $75.

    Scissors are OK for the Swiss Army knife or a mini pocket multi tool plier but I'll take the saw blade over scissors every time.
    The whistle & ferro rod, eh. I'd rather have more tools, screwdrivers maybe, 1/4 inch bit holder probably.
    Thanks for all the multi tool videos. I've watched many trying to figure out what folding plier multi tool I want for my go bag, something lighter than my Leatherman Super Tool 200. It must have a saw. A decent file would be good too.

  • @Rob-ee2lm
    @Rob-ee2lm Рік тому +3

    I won't buy top price multitools. Tools are meant to be used and abused, dropped, left outside and used in ways they aren't supposed to be. If I do that with a $30 tool, meh, whatever. I'll grab another one. A $200 multitool won't ever get used because I don't want to break it, lose it or damage it. That's why my $20 Bibury is an EDC.
    Great idea for them to skeletonize it, but there is a big downside. That means either new punches and with that many extra openings the chance at failure is higher raising the cost to offset. Or, if it is CNC'd that means more time on the mill and the bit get used that much longer lowering the life, hence raising the individual cost. I'm not that concerned with losing 3 or 4 grams, especially if it raises the cost by $10-20.

      @@maxlvledc most clone knives and low end "bells and whistles" knives are produced in sheds of yangjiang. Its their way to support the family. This place is the traditional place of chinese practicle knife production where it had a long traditional of producing knives of various uses. Sadly as the "control" over knives increase(understandable as it is pretty much the same in uk and too many people don't understand to not use a knife as a weapon), local people who relied on selling knives fail to have a profit(any knife with acute tip/ lock/ blade length of over 8cm can't be carried in public areas). Many people say that this much conterfeit presence is due to the absence of proper law. However, the real issue is that few good original designs are made so those who rely on making knives can only ask the online sellers what to make. Most of these sellers can only think of selling clone knives(can't blame them, but it is their fault) or stuff that they know "would at least get some sales". Regarding the law aspect, this is pretty tough as these clones can't be easily traced and that some people really isn't aware of a knife coping another as they don't know the real one exists. However, I am very hopeful as things are starting to turn. There is still the problem of selfish sellers trying to infuse impractical ideas regarding knife designs in order to trick gullible fledgling into buying a certain type of impractical product(e.g:convex 5mm thick "survival" knife that is no different to a brick; batoning a nail and showing unharmed blade but the reason for that is the blade is so convex that it is useless; bragging the importance of supersteel and how all budget steels are worthless while charging 30% more for a mora)

    16:45 "Price under $50" Forget that! If they can keep it at $60 It will be a MAJOR threat to the big three! I've been binging multitool videos over the past month because I've finally gotten to the place where I want to upgrade from the Wave. Given all of Leatherman's BS and the other two make their components over seas, I've decided to main a clone of the Surge. A few years ago that would have been unthinkable to me. Now, at $35 with all the features PLUS a key improvement, I am ok with a slightly lesser steel. Especially considering that Leatherman themselves has quietly lowered their steel quality over the years. If these new players and clones can get as good, if not better quality steel, I'll happily pay $60-70. Why wouldn't I? Better value for money and it will teach the old dogs that they don't get to run the yard off of name alone.
    18:25 I've got to disagree with you there. The reamer awl is one of the things missing from the wave that has ate at me for YEARS. I can't count the number of times in the past that I used a reamer to make a starter hole for a screw. I get different people run across different needs but awl, file, and a good pare of scissors are a must in a multitool.
