It sounds like while it only 'officially' can handle 2 long tools, you can actually fit more with no modification in the right combination. Basically, If you put a long blade next to another long tool, it should fit without touching the pliers

    • @Spanky8402
      @Spanky8402 4 місяці тому

@SILVERF0X13 yeah, I seen a video about that. A file, Saw and a optional knife is what I was hoping for and that's exactly what you can do with it. I am thinking about putting the bit driver in my pocket tool pouch and putting the phillips in with a few other tools, so I can have the most in the multitool and take them out and put the bit driver when I need to use the bits I carry. I carry a Victorinox Rambler, so I don't need scissors on the Flex.

great comparison. Thank you. I have had my G.O.A.T. for quite a while now (months.... a year?) and carry it everywhere, and I am more than pleased with it. My one suggestion would actually be to increase the capacity of the long implements to four per side/handle instead of the current two. The sleeve comes with a pouch to house the extra tools but it would be so convenient not to have to switch them around as often. As the amount of tool options increases in the marketplace, so too will the amount of space needed in the sleeve. The other feature I would add would be a flashlight of some kind that could be mounted on the scale beside the pocket clip. If it could rotate off of the hex pin (as its anchor point) and shed some area light (versus "aimed" task light) and use one of those button batteries it would save me having to use two different tools sometimes. :-)

Both look pretty decent and worth getting. I wish they had interchangeable plier heads like the old Gerber Multi-Plier 650 Evolution. I bought one, and the different heads, over 20 years ago and now they discontinued it. Another thing I like is having an attachment where you can swap out different saw blades from the shorter jig saw to the larger and longer Sawzall blades. It's nice to be able to swap out a short metal cutting blade, to a longer nine-inch Skil Sawzall Ugly blade for cutting tree limbs. Keep up the great work.

Another good thing about the modular open-source mt is that you can potentially upgrade a tool to a higher quality steel, e.g. Magnacut blade, titanium tools, etc.
I do wish that the Flex came with the large scissors for which Roxon is famous. Love the scissors on my M2 and KS2.

👍🏼good vid. I couldn’t live chat for some reason.
I’m loving my GOAT. It had a couple minor issues but I worked thru them. Michael O’Donnell seems to care very much about his product and has always been very responsive to my emails. I think he was a regular guy that wanted a customizable tool so he did it himself from nothing. The roxon looks pretty good but I can’t buy multiple multitools so I’m gonna stay loyal to goat and try to support the “little guy”.
I was searching for a long time and not happy with forking out my hard earned money on what was available. Until I discovered the goat. Thanks Mavlvl! Very glad I took a chance on the goat.

I’d rather buy a base platform from Roxon and having all the implements at cheap. Buying them in bulk and can replace them as they break instead of sending them for weeks.
It just wouldn’t make sense to buy Leatherman to be honest. Goat tool didn’t catch because it didn’t get support behind it. Roxon is already well established and can get all the support needed.

@clintwestwood3539 I don’t see my first comment. If something breaks on the goat they send you a new whatever broke. And they encourage modding and supposedly still honor their warranty. Nobody does that.

    • @clintwestwood3539
      @clintwestwood3539 6 місяців тому

@@andrewfett142 I get the warranty, you probably don't get what I mean. I use my tools. And by use I mean that I do really use them to the fully extent, over 12 hours per day, every day, six days per week. They break.
It's not a big deal. That's why tools are cheap since you can easily replace them. We own a construction company and we go through hand tools in bulk per each site.
That's the whole point tho. I cannot wait weeks (even if it was a week but it never was since I sent back to Leatherman multiple tools across over 15 years of buying them and in Europe there is no European support for it, there was a Leatherman sub in Germany but now it's closed so you have to ship it into the USA which takes a freaking lot of time, usually multiple weeks as I was saying) and you stay without which is against the reasoning to have a multitool in the first place.
A multitool is there to make your life easier and do stuff quicker. If I break off a pry head while prying who cares, I'll jam in the plier head and pry with that if I need to do it quickly. Then I can replace it.
That's what I meant that if you can buy in bulk replacement parts instead of relying on a warranty it's way better. Like way way better. Anyone truly using them will tell you the same, especially if they are not based in the USA.
Let me remind you that the USA population is less than 5% of the world's population. This means that the same reasoning will apply to over 90% of the world's population. Take blue collar in proportion in both and you'll get the same results proportionally.
Anyway, that was my thought. I gave you some context here. If Roxon, being already supported, can pull it off, I'm closing in with Leatherman since it won't really matter anything they release (if I want a Magnacut in my pocket, I'd rather have a Native 5 that I know being perfectly heat treated over any Arc and any future release). At the same time, Leatherman can't really pull anything new at that point besides some niche tools for EMS/Outdoorsmen since blue collar would be way better off something that can have cheap parts in bulk to replace even by day. I'd rather use and abuse the tool in my belt for any dirty work (I hammered multiple times like a Cro Magnon with the Surge for example, even tho it doesn't have a "striking hammer". I just use the tool as a rock, it works. If it breaks a part, I'd rather just replace it myself) instead of relying on a warranty that takes time, it slows me down and negates any benefit that a multitool has.
I hope this gives context. Cheers.

Quite honestly I think the GOAT, at least for me, has been a failure. I do think the scalpel and bit driver are good, scissors also... But not particularly outstanding. For example, the Bibury driver can lock into two positions, the SOG and GERBER have good drivers that IMO are outstanding (depending on the tool). Gerber also has some good scalpel blades...
GOAT has many problems: The tools fall out, the Pliers cutter is useless, Some tools refuse to lock... Even as a first effort I find it abysmal. I was going to have the tool looked at before I realized so many people were having similar issues. I just think they jumped the gun. The Roxon looks much better designed, especially the locking mechanism and the fanning design for the tools.
My point is, Roxon has some Karmic currency (for lack of a better description) at least from how you describe it, to claim a true design for modular open source that can execute. Knowing your knowledge of these tools I confess maybe I am missing something here. But my experience with the GOAT has been what it has been and disaster comes to mind as a useful description.

I really liked the GOAT when it came on the scene, but every reviewer I have seen fumbles with the selection change when swapping out selections. Or it does not always lock well and has to be reseated in order to do so. Not something a would be consumer wants to see. I am anxiously awaiting hands on reviews of the Flex to see how it fairs. I’m done with Leatherman; they can go pound sand even if they bring their own modular offering.

This tool holds a lot of promise but needs two things: a 1/4-inch bit driver, not a 4mm bit driver. Also needs 4 long tools at a minimum, not just 2. All decent leatherman clones now have 4 long tools and 1/4-inch bit driver which hold a bit without requiring the extra attachment at the end. If Roxon keeps up with the major implement trends of our day, they will lead the market. I will wait for the improved v2 version of the Flex.

very informative, thanks. I think my ideal toolset for the roxon would be blade and saw for the long tools, then sub a micro screwdriver for the pull cutter, and a short version of scissors for the file. love the wide chisel/pry bar. I'd honestly be willing to give up the bottle opener and awl for a corkscrew that accepts all the SAK tinder/ferro rod combos. also, can openers get a lot of shade these days, but I won't spend my money on a multitool that doesn't have one, because in the remote possibility I'm ever in an emergency situation, I want to always be able to get into canned foods

Also would LOVE to see a small LED coin-cell light on the scale that doesn't house the mechanisms - the ergonomics of the extra panel can't be denied, but might as well make good use of that space! Speaking of which, tweezers + toothpick + pen while we're eyeing up that scale?

If I could improve anything on the G.O.A.T. would be to make it a little longer and put a longer head plier in it, along with a better cutout for cutting wire. It's interesting now that the original Leatherman patent has expired to see what will be made.

Two things wrong with Roxon bit drivers😅: they use 4mm, not the larger quarter inch. This is a deal breaker for me. The other thing wrong with Roxon bit drivers is that they require a separate adapter (socket) to be attached. Almost all big-name companies today make quarter-inch one-piece bit drivers that do not require having to carry the bit kit. The MT is carried with the double-ended bit already in the bit driver with the MT in the closed position.

If the Goat tool had a better mechanism and a better tool set it would be the perfect tool.

Honestly tho I’d be happier with a tool where I need a tool to change the implements. This “quick change” stuff is a novelty/gimmick. MOST people will deck out their multitool with what they want and carry it for months. Who is this quick change actually for? The electrician that has to go fishing after work? Really think about it. Everyone reading this will fine tune their tool then leave it alone. I’d rather have a more positive connection and less parts. That lock/unlock switch on the Roxon is so dumb. Leatherman uses geometry to keep its tools in. That’s premium. Just put a flush flat head cammed screw to lock and unlock the tools, maybe something that can be turned with a coin. I’m just not over here switching out the tools every day and neither are you. The novelty will wear off quick.

I have no idea how, but hopefully someone can figure out a way to fit the Victorinox scissors into the Flex. That would make the tool absolutely perfect.

Leatherman is still the king. The thing is the modular MT market is niche. Most people are accommodated with a few select tools. Most people don’t give a shit if it’s a warnclif drop point or clip point. It the knife cuts then it cuts.
Appealing to niche markets has to be done with great care. The only reason MTs like the signal are allowed to exist is the outdoor sector is huge.
The fact of the matter is every new MT LM releases competes against every other MT in their lineup and needs to be priced accordingly. In top of that they’re established firmly in Portland Oregon which is incredibly expensive to operate in.
I think if LM would want to go for the “modular market” they should focus on making replacement implements that are compatible with a multitude of their locking mechanisms and selling them in kits or packs.

I know this will go against the grain here, but, I think modular multitools are a fad or, at best, will always be a tiny niche market.
There's just too much room for non modular tools to be better, given the inherent sacrifices needed to make a tool modular. And too many of the perceived advantages of a modular tool don't actually pan out, practically.

I don't care about the false-positive high spirit comments. Only real life experince will tell how good is the S804 Flex. Do not trash talk Leatherman, because after the Goat tool Leatherman somehow still in buisness.
