Still think Leatherman did the EDC world a disservice by discontinuing the Squirt platform. Its the best pocket-sized plier-based multitool to carry with a utility knife secondary. Iguess its like cars, the bigger the better, but even the Skeletool doesnt offer as much utility, and the Free platform is just too damn big...If Victorinox made a Squirt sized Swiss Tool I'd be their first customer.
Been carrying the squirt p4 on my keychain for 10+ years. Still my favorite tool. Alot of people say the pliers are too small to be useful but it's not true for all tasks. Also they have an advantage over Saks for cutting wire. Will say the little Nextool looks great too. Quite a bit bigger though.
Honestly, I think the Gerber Dime has always had a better toolset than the Squirt, so I don't mourn the loss. However, in terms of Leatherman doing the EDC world a disservice, discontinuing the Style PS is unforgivable. Even the new nextool can't hold a candle to it.
Bought myself The Leatherman Arc as my first multitool and for the long term, well is expensive but all 20 tools is useful to me and I use all of it, the best multitool is the one that you actually will carry every single day and use all the tool in it.
It's nice to see Victorinox get so much attention. YT reviewers don't emphasize enough the superior quality of this brand when compared to their competitors. I have a Rambler as part of my EDC for years. The toothpick is the most used tool - haha!
Not impressed with Victorinox' "quality". Even worse is their "warranty". One of my worst decisions--ever--was wasting money on a Victorinox. Endless problems. Victorinix seems to create more problems with every warranty service, which takes about 6 months a pop. In 2 years, Victorinix has had their POS in warranty more thsn I have had it. I wish I could say this is an isolated incident, but I have a bunch if their junk. Drawers full that people have given me. All broken junk. Victorinix=junk.
@maxlvledc I have given up on the multi-tool companies. I make my own, admittedly using parts from said companies. Currently, I have a Charge TTi+ frame, with modified Irwin pliers with clone Leatherman replaceable cutters, Victorinox scissors, a blade made by me from industrial tool steel, a Wingman package opener, an awl made by me, the Charge file, the P4 serrated blade, and a cottle/can opener/wire stripper from some Leatgerman or other. It uses the flathead and Phillips from the P4. I modified the locks and magnets, then added tweezer and ferro rod/needle. The file is modified to be removable. I still have the small bit driver. I modified the tools/frame to allow springs to keep the tools from falling open. The tools open very well, and stay in place. The pins/hinge hardware I had to upgrade and replace. My next attempt may change the blade to Magnacut, and I may make my own scissors. I'm working on a titanium frame. My previous attempt used a Charge TTi + frame and mostly that toolset, with the Wingman package opener and the Victorinox scissors. The Victorinox scissors cut, but only small things. I have to replace them every few months.
Great video Dom! My journey began with a Climber in HS. It was a gift from a family friend. Later, working in an office setting, I carried a Manager on my keys for years. Today, in my urban environment, I don't need quick pocket access to a saw. My tool priorities are blade, scissor, pry, file, screwdriver and pliers in that order. This leads me to one of several load outs: 1. Knife-based, centered around the Vosteed Raccoon Top Liner Lock or something similar. 2. SAK-based, centered around a custom Cyber Companion or Free T4. 3. Pliers-based (Free P2, Skeletool and now Spirit MX Clip). I have to say, I've only had the Spirit MX Clip a few days but it is divine. I can see why it's so high on your list!
This video is as awesome, useful, and as important as nothing fancies philosophy of use video & his multi-tool continuum video. You sir are one of the great youtubers of all time. I bow my head to you. Bravo 👏
Great video. I just received my mx clip that I ordered when they were $100. It’s by far the nicest multi tool I have ever used. That said I could understand why someone would prefer the wave or surge but not me. I’ll carry this thing forever and that life time warranty is sweet.
You’ve taught me a lot about knives and multitools. Thank you! Good video recapping your experience and tools you’ve introduced through the years! I bought one Leatherman multitool (Wave+) and likely will never buy another. I love the SOG PowerPint and Vic Mini Champ, both of which I carry and use daily. I’ve added BiBury, Shall, and the Gerber Dual Force; the Dual Force is the best full size multitool I’ve ever used. For me, it has the tool set I use most. I jumped in on the discount for the Roxon Flex Companion; so far, I like it. One last comment: I love the Rocktol Multitool Pocket Knife (also carried daily, if not used daily). Please keep up your work!
I’ve had it about a year; picked it up from Gerber on a sale for about $45. We live on 3 acres with 3 families; between construction and maintenance, it’s become indispensable. We also RV a lot (I was retired but went back to work this year); it is super helpful around the RV. I did tweak the plier heads a little doing something they’re not made to do, but they still work fine. The screwdriver, saw, and chisel have all been well used and have held up well. I haven’t used the knife much since I always have a knife or two on me that I prefer.
As a vintage pocket knife guy, I’ve always dabbled into the multi tool pond, got a few that I like. But I will say, you recommended the Bibury a couple years back as a budget option, and man oh man, for the money, it’s fantastic. It’s a little bulky, but for under $30 it’s hard to beat, for my needs. I’m already carrying a modern folder and a slipjoints everyday, so I keep it in my edc bag and not on my person. I love SAKs, and my translucent blue huntsman is gotta be my fav. You dont realize how handy they are until you need it. Great video Max
Still carry the Wave after many years. I don't know what I would do without it, I use it all the time and it has gotten me out of a tough situation many times. I have Supert Tool 300s in all my vehicles and first aid kits. Multi-tools are amazing!
@@vaughnwarren8446 I would consider the Arc if they made a more budget version of it, like changing the blade to a cheaper steel. But even if they did that, can't give up the serrated blade. It has come in handy far too many times
I carry a wave+ on my hip as a truck driver. I retired my rebar and gave it to my brother when he graduated college. But I like the wave cause of the easily accessible blades. Which as a truck driver, being able to have that serrated blade at the ready if I crash. Leading me to have to cut my self out of my belt gives me some comfort that’s for sure. Also it just has all the tools that I need at work and at home. I did recently start carrying a SAK tinker, mostly for nostalgia cause that’s what my grandfather carried. I also feel like the SAK tinker compliments the wave very well.
Noticed that the vid began and ended with Victorinox. That's a nice full circle for such a storied MT company. Great work, Dom. The insights you share certainly speak to your 25 years of experience.
@@maxlvledc I might add one of the SwissCard variants as an option for flying, since you can remove the blade if you want it as a carryon, and you don't need to pull it out of your bag because x-rays can see through it. You get scissors, pen, tweezers, toothpick, pin, file, screwdriver(s), a blade that you can check if you want, and sometimes a light and/or magnifying glass.
I reach for mine twice as often as any other multi tool. It is amazing. I don’t use the knife very much, so I wish there was a tool I could swap for that… but I don’t want to lose any of the other tools!
My first, and still only, multitool is the Swiss Champ. Honestly, the part you said where once you go above a certain size you want to go pliar based multitools is pretty accurate. The small pliars aren't big enough for anything major, and so far I only found them useful for getting sand burs out of my shoes on the beach. One thing I will say about the Champ though is it taught me that first lesson about "how do you plan to carry it?". I tried for about a month to figure out the best ways to carry it, and make the key ring usable, and it led me to getting a pocket clip for the tool. Tried a keychain flashlight, which was useful but was scratching up the knife, and wish I got the clip sooner than I did. I'm still using the tool though, and I feel like its a great "training" or demo platform. Basically "Here's just about every single good tool in a package small enough to still be pocket carryable. See what you like."
@@maxlvledc Swiss Champ, not the mini, and I tried lol. It was a horrible idea because it was waaaaaaay too heavy. So I tried to make the key ring useful instead of taking it off entirely. The pro Olight keychain flashlight was pretty nice on it for a bit till I realized it was taking the chromium layer off the knife and scratching up the scales. So I moved the flashlight to my actual keychain, and then got Swiss Karryclip for it. The clip is a life saver because it makes the champ no longer slosh around in your pocket while running. XD Speaking of the mini champ though... I wish there was a keychain SAK that was like a companion to the larger Champ. Only one I can think of that can fill that role is the Wenger model with the fingernail clippers and serrated scissors, but I have so many fingernail clippers right now I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.
Such an amazing roundup! I think you can easily add an extra category for 'speciality' multitools. The epic MUT for example. Otherwise, spot on with everything.
@maxlvledc Don't beat yourself up. Always room for a part 2 😁 I showed your clip to my friends that confirms so much what I resonate all these years. What's on my keychain? An Alox Rambler (made it myself, annoyed with Victorinox that they don't make it officially). My day hike choice - the Huntsman or the Farmer X. My solution for most generall stuff - the Surge. I have the MUT because I can apreciate its crazy overengineering but it's a niche tool. My first multitool was the Swiss tool, the original big square one with a red background on the side. So yeah thanks again for the video!
Best companion tool in my opinion to go with a dedicated pocket knife is the vic swisstool spirit xc. It has the scissors, saw, file, and serrated blade to compliment the dedicated pocket knife. It's size to tool density is superb, quality is top notch, and ergonomics are outstanding.
Excellent video! The trend is for these new multitools is to continue improvement while maintaining value & a competitive price point...LTG is the elephant in the room, as they, who were in the van of innovation, are slowly being left behind in the dust...your comments on the Surge are an excellent example of this, as is your entire presentation...that & QC, which is why V, for example, is still so masterful...great job, Dom...thanks!😊
Speaking from long experience, horizontal appendix belt carry is fantastic for large SAK or Wave size tools 👍 There's no such thing as too much information, especially when it's about a tool that you'll probably use for 10 years !
@@maxlvledc I've posted this response 5 times but it keeps getting deleted. The sheaths I use are $5 A l I e x p r e s s twenty two c al magazine holders. They have molle & horizontal mount for a 2" belt. Highly recommended 👍
I’ve carried a gerber dime (traveler) on my key chain for 5yrs now. I just upgraded to carrying a Leatherman arc in pocket for Christmas and so far I love it.
I carry a little Swiss Army style multitool made by Mikov. It has a little knife, bottle opener, punch and corkscrew. I actually use it- mostly for opening packages or beer bottles. I imagine most who carry multitools never use them.
Really good analysis! Even myself being a Victorinox guy had not thought about the swisstool to be the top highlander on the pliers world, but I think you are right! However, to be honest and in my opinion, if you would bring the McGyver from the 80’s to the current day, he would be a happy man carrying the standard rebar plus a classic sd.
Thanks for your video. I've bought quite a few multitools over the past couple of years, based on your recommendations and those of others on UA-cam (like HVAC Budget). For example, I've bought the Nextool Mini Flagship Gen 1 (no broken springs yet!), Nextool Mini Sailor Scissors, Victorinox Rambler (the one I always carry in my pocket), Bibury Multitool Pliers Pro, Roxon Flex Companion, and the Oknife Otacle P1 (Nextool Mini Sailor clone). I've had to exchange a few of these for a replacement due to QC issues that I couldn't fix myself. From what I gather, Victorinox tends to have pretty high QC compared to most of the other brands. I've found Nextool, Bibury, Roxon and Oknife customer service to be very responsive when issues or questions arise.
Greetings from Alabama! This was a well reasoned analysis of considerations governing our quest to find the ideal tool for our needs. It was well organized and presented with the rationale behind your selection. Lastly, it was a great assessment of the current market and the challenges that Leatherman faces. Well done! Keep your great videos coming and best wishes in 2025.
I use different multitools for different settings. I’ve got a SAK classic SD for opening mail and other small tasks when my keys are handy. I switch between the Milwaukee 5 in 1 fast back and the leatherman wave+ for my usual daily carry (Milwaukee for when I work construction and Leatherman for most other times) Then the Surge for when I’m hunting, camping, working on commercial fishing boats and any other time I have big projects to do. Usually the surge gets used as a back up for when the real tools are out of reach
Always fun watching your videos and hearing your take on different models while sipping on a bourbon. I bought the MX Clip through your link a few weeks ago when you posted about it. It'll be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait to carry and use the hell out of it. Cheers!
I love the Rambler!.... I would choose the Leatherman Rebar....but to make it perfect I wish they would replace the serrated blade with a large scissors as good as an SAK 91mm.
A great roundup, thanks. Makes me think back over the pocket knives and multitools I've had over the years. I still have a Leatherman Supertool from the end of the 90's in my tool box along with a WWII british navy pocket knife with marlin spike and a selection of Swiss Army knives I used to carry everyday knocking around. However, I have shifted to carrying the bladeless Nextool minisailor lite for everyday use after watching your review and love it.
I really agree with you that "accessories can be a trap". I have many multitools (Rebar, ST300, ARC, Charge, Signal, Flex, Flash, etc.) the one I alway choose to carry is multitool that's has a belt clip, light weight, and don't need to carry other accessories or sheath with it. More accessories mean more weight and space you need to concern. Now, my main EDC is ARC in my pant pocket and Rebar as a secondary multitool in my bag.
I would except its nearly impossible to find atm. Also I've had 2 of the glass files break while inside the holder in my wallet. I wish they would use one that is more flexible.
That's fair, I have also had the file break. Reached out to Victorinox and they sent me a pack of replacements though and I haven't had one break since.
The Victoria Knox manager is probably the best tool that they make. It’s got the perfect combination of EDC tools. I wouldn’t recommend a rambler only because the ink pen on the manager is so so useful. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend carrying a Swiss Army knife unless it had the ink pen that’s how handy that little pen can be.
@ I know it’s a shame. I personally can’t recommend the rambler because that ink pen is so clutch. But you’re right the only alternative is the mini champ and that’s way too big. I think the rambler’s the better of the two... plus you can always mod it with the scales with the pen
I prefer the Victorinox Pioneer X over anything for my daily carry. It has 3 layers, the most that I am willing to carry, narrow and light enough for my jeans pockets, and a rock solid build. I do have the Swiss Tool Spirit X, but its in a tool bag since it's just too heavy for the pocket. I also love my Leatherman Curl (despite many tool reviewers hating on it) since it has all the necessary tools for an urban scenario (when was the last time you actually needed the saw or the serrated edge on the wave or something?). The Pioneer X and the Curl are missing from this list.
I bought a Leatherman Surge almost twenty years ago, I have used it constantly since then, is still in perfect shape, still looks great, it has been my only multitool. Even the leather case have survived in great condition.
I watched the entire video, but agree with your first sentiment the most. I have, and have made, access to tool kits of various proportion through my entire life - at home, work, backpack, travel kit and car. Having access to superior tools means I just have never religiously carried a quality multitool, despite trying several times. The longest serving multitool I have carried everyday is a free company-branded Leatherman Micra knock-off that stays on my keys. I use it daily, unlike any real Leatherman or Victorinox I have ever been gifted or bought.
I have had five different Leatherman multi tools. I have sold them all. I am based in the UK, we have laws that restrict locking blades. I have used a Swiss army knife, I have keeped one for many years. I now have a Victorinox multi tool.
Just got back my wave plus back today from leatherman. 57yrs old and have always had a leatherman on my side. They did a great job, everything was like new! Not a collector, just always needed the tool.
Wonderfully thoughtful video as usual. I have the Swiss Spirit and Swiss Tool X so was reluctant to also bite on the MX Clip... but at the $113 it was impossible to ignore (looks like delivery is 1-2 months out, at this point). Took the bite via your affiliate link...thanks for lead! With looser tools, the pocket clip, and the thumb stud, I might actually carry this one on my person. (My current EDC is the Rambler on my keychain and the KS2E in the pocket... it will be hard to shake loose that combo... but the MX might just do it.)
Just bought the Multper (surge clone $43) to keep in my truck, the ozark multiforce ($38) to keep in my house, and the Leatherman bolster($40) to carry in my pocket since it’s lightweight!
Grabbed the MX Clip when it went on sale earlier, and I have not been disappointed. The quality on this guy feels so superior to almost any other tool I've handled. It's kinda hard to explain, but it just really stands out.
Very comprehensive video!!! My favorite category is companion pliers. At first I carried the skeletool, then I went with the power liter. Finally I tried a sog power access, and I've stuck with it for 3 years working handyman, carpenter, tree work, and commercial fishing. It's the precision plier head, 1 handed opening, compound leverage, and weight (5.9oz). My only gripe is its not comfortable to squeeze, oh well. I may give the bladeless rebar a try. Thanks!
Skeletool cx pros; form factor is smooth and sleek. Price is great. Knife is excellent, weight is great, bit holder is great, I used the carabiner end as a pry tool for paint cans. Cons; there's no small pokey tool, the plier ergos are not great with the curved handle, the plier head is not precision, the pocket clip is weak steel, no file, no dedicated flat head/pry/scraper, not easily 1 handed. Conclusion is that it's an excellent minimal tool for a painter or electrician, but the SOG power access has it beat in every con as well as pros except ergos which are equally bad in a different way. The compound leverage of SOGs tools also makes them way way more functional. As a carpenter, the precision plier head of the power access, and the tiny tools are super handy for staples and unjamming nail guns. It's also less than an ounce more than the skeletool which is crucial to me.
I’ve owned 3 multi tools in my life; the first was a leatherman wave gifted to me; I promptly cut my thumb using it. Great first experience. The 2nd was another leatherman wave I bought after I enlisted. It was decent but annoying to open and use one handed. The latest/current is a gerber I was issued. It’s always in my belt and because of the ease of one handed use, I actually use it more frequently.
I have come back to the SAK as the tool that best fit my EDC needs. I don't use the multitool pliers for much besides pulling ticks and burrs off my dog. The Swiss Champ pliers is all I normally need outside the house. The Champ is about the same footprint and weight of a Leatherman. If I am doing things around the house I have dedicated tools for that and a pair standard pliers is much more robust than the pliers on a multitool. Same thing applies to the bit drivers. The vehicle is the only place I can see where something like a Leatherman is useful to me and I carry a Wave and a full bit kit in my emergency pack.
Thank you for the excellent, well-organized multitool overview. Only category I'd add is TSA-compliant multitools. This category would include the Nextool Mini Sailor Lite and the Victorinox Jetsetter. Any others you'd include? And of all of these, which would you rate #1 (understanding that even though these are compliant an overzealous TSA agent could still confiscate them).
Dom videos like this and about multi in general are always my favorite to watch. This was a great video. I am in the blue collar feild and I love and stand by my surge but I really really wish leatherman would give it a update...and BTW I would love to see a new video on the victorinox swisstool mx I didn't realize they added the one handed blade to the swisstool
Great video! Some thoughts: I have almost 8 years with the Leatherman Surge, but is very heavy. I will change to the Victorinox Spirit, with sheat. I am not a fan of clips, I prefeer 10 times a sheat in my belt. I think that (for me) would be a annoying a search in my pockets with the multitool bothering, or worry about my multitool is hang from a easy loosing clip, or tear cloth. In other hand, I not consider that the "one hand operation" to some or all parts of multitool is sooooo useful. At least for me, prefeer access in two or three seconds with my two hands the needed part of multitool, and then use it with one hand. But maybe some activities form some persons results often and useful the "one hand access", not for me. Initially I use the multitool to my job, but since some years, I always carry a multitool.
@@maxlvledc After 7 or 8 years, change the Leatherman Surge, in triste Christmas I adquire Victorinox Swisstool spirit X. And about 5 years I carry a Tiny Victorinox claasic 58mm, as keychain
Reeeeally awesome video! Thanks) For me I think, victorinox compact in pocket with a key clip and letherman rebar in bag is way to go. They complement great each other. I have compact and want to buy rebar. BTW victorinox spirit mx clip is awesome too, like as the only one tool you need.
Great video Dom. I personally would go with the Arc over the MX clip to support the home team. I also didn’t see the Skeletool. It’s so handy and pocketable with a much better blade and driver over the powerpint I think it should have been mention worthy
Victorinox compact is my favourite to throw in my pocket for casual use, for yard work or when I suspect I might need to do some tinkering the wave is my go to, for real work I bring proper tools.
You gotta check out the rae sheath for the centerdrive. Its game changer having it deploy as you pull it out. Im a very hard use tradesman and I love the centerdrive so much. After i removed the bit holder so the pliers close all the way its perfect. I use the wire cutters on steel (welding) wire daily with no issues too.
In the last 38 years, I found 2 multi tool pliers that lasted the abuse I gave them. My favorite is an S.O.G. with geared pliers and a Schrade. Bulky but got the job done and keeps going too. Both were in the $40-$70 range.
Got the Spirit X i couple of weeks ago thanks to your channel. A great tool for sure. Prefer the regular victorinox scissors but thats really the only minus. And if you're carrying a vic folder alongside (which I do) it sorta turns into a plus. Thanks for another great video!
I was buying multitools like crazy and never thought how I want to carry them. Only years later I figured out that for 95% of use-cases I need only my nextool flagship mini in my pocket, and then something bigger but still light, like powerpint, in my edc pouch. I don't take my pouch all the time, but I will always have the small multitool on me.
Nice roundup. Love my Arc but i use the blade a lot and having that high end steel means i typically only need to strop once or twice every couple weeks.
I have the gerber center drive with the serrated blade and I want to kit it out like in your videos, I love it and carry it every day. I do wish it had a saw and scissors in addition plus a better file. With that said though it has always done what I need and as a carpenter has been through some tough tasks
20:28 Victorinox and Leatherman pliers are made of forged steel, not cast steel as you said. The reason why multitool pliers break under extreme strain is that the pliers are much thinner than normal pliers. After the steel forged in the press is processed on CNC machines, heat treatment is applied to harden the material and then the steel is tempered. The purpose of the tempering process is to relieve the stress created by the carbon atoms entering the crystal lattice of the material. Thus, the toughness of the material is increased. Although tempering is applied to increase the toughness of the material, the cross-section of the multitool pliers is much thinner than normal pliers, so they can break under extreme strain. The thinness of the cross-section of the pliers causes the strenght against the force generated during the pliers' squeezing to be less. This problem is also seen in normal pliers, although to a lesser extent. If the multitool pliers were made of cast steel as you said, they would break very easily on first use. Since the material has no toughness in cast steel, its yield strength is very low. I hope I was able to help you understand the technical aspect of the subject.
I went for the classic Swiss Tool insted of the Spirit because I didn't like the shorter blade and the scissors of the Spirit. Now, the Swiss Tool I got is the one without scissors but with another kind of serrated blade, which I think it is good to have. For the scissors I got my Ranger and I couldn't be more happy. I think Victorinox is the best quality, fit and finish tool on the market. Thanks for the video my friend! Have a nice day and happy Christmas.
Toted a full sized Leatherman for a decade in my small fanny pack in the car for trips. Used it twice. SAK Tinker and classic for scissors and real tools in car and at home for me.
Agreed, although I went with the Spirit X, as I don't like the smaller blade and the grind on the MX blade. So I sacrifice one handed opening, but get a better blade... And yeah, they have softened the back springs a tad so that they aren't ripping your nails off to open the tools any more... I like the idea of the Arc, I own one, but I rarely carry it due to the bulk, less comfortable grip, and the tools just aren't as good or as useful....
For me the Rocktol Gen-R is my new go to. It is my favorite tool set-up and still has a pocket clip. Love the 1/4 bit driver vs proprietary bits. The magnet trick for the bit driver is awesome also.
Enjoyed this very much, had to actually write down notes for this comment. I too have had a similar journey with MT's. Mine started with Victorinox, and had woven back and forth between that and Leatherman. 100% agree with you regarding accessories. I don't care for proprietary bits or tools, such as with the Signal. My preferred way to carry is my right front pocket. Tops of my pockets are reserved for clipped flashlight and fixed blade. Weight limit for me in the pocket cannot be greater than 8oz, and thickness of the MT not bigger than 1". My current MT(past two months) is a category I don't think you reference, and it's a 111mm Hercules. It is just barely thinner than 1", weight is 7.2 oz, and I really love the tool set. I know what you're thinking, I could carry for 0.25 oz more the Swisstool Spirit X? Yes I could, I just really dislike the scissors in that tool (maybe do a vid on how to sharpen them and you might change my mind). Because I pocket carry, a factor important for me is how easily will the tool flop over to its side? Unfortunately every 91mm I have tried with the exception of the Swisschamp does this. I love the size of the Ranger, but for the reason of flopping to its side ( and no dedicated Phillips) I don't choose to carry it. Two hand opening is not a concern for me, however, steel choice I currently will only get domestic or Swiss. I just don't have faith yet in Chinese made steel for heat treatment and toughness (sorry if this offends people, but this IMO). Really enjoy videos like these, thanks for sharing!
Never have, but I do like the Nite Ize one that you stick on. I did try the mini Nite Ize S-biner before. Not a fan of the S-biner & ring in the way of some of the tools when I was trying to use them .
Been carrying a Victorinox mini champ and a Swiss Tool Spirit Sheepsfoot for 8 years now. Today I just picked up a Leatherman Arc which may be more robust, but it just doesn't look as pretty nor feel as high end, yet it costs more than double vs the Spirit. Only time will tell how the MagnaCut blade fares.
Which 3-layer SAKs is your favorite? Climber, or other? Great call on using the Victorinox Ranger (5 layers) instead of the 4 layer SAKs for woodsman use for the extra tools and better in-hand feel.
Excellent video. Gives me something to think about. I'm more partial to the SAK Fieldmaster than the Huntsman. Similar tool set, just has Philips screwdriver vs corkscrew. When it comes to multitools, I have mixed feelings. I have collected them everscence Leatherman came out with it's first Multitool. I hardly ever cary them. Pliers make lousy wrenches. Find myself just never using them even when I cary them. A Victorinox Super Tinker w/plus scales & Tool clip does everything I need. Now I have a rotational cary with for mentioned Super Tinker, Free T4, & Roxon KS2E. Love Roxon's stuff, high quality and performance at a good price. Keep up the great work.
@maxlvledc I don't carry one. I have plenty of tools at home. At work I have a small set of tools. I design automation equipment. We assemble it basically but we don't actually manufacture the parts. I can usually borrow tools from the assemblers. Multi tools are just not helpful in that environment. I'm expected to use proper tools when working on our equipment. Even though I don't really use them I still buy them from time to time. Just bought the Arc and love it. Now trying to figure out how to carry it with it not being too bulky. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
I have the Flash, and got it mainly because of the ability to easily change out the tools. I hope at some point that they come out with some other frames that take those tools that don't have fiberglass or glass-filled handles.
👍 Manager, Powerpint, Rebar, and Swisstool mx are all amazing. I just asked Leatherman what the actual weight of the Knifeless Rebar is. They've had it and the regular Rebar at 189.94g on their website for years. No way they are exactly the same.
On my home scale, my Rebar weighs 188 grams and my Knifeless Rebar weighs 178 grams. Hope this helps! I bought the knifeless Rebar for my 8 year old daughter so that she can use a multitool without me worrying about her having a knife!
@@maxlvledc Mine weighs 179g or 6.3 oz. It's OK. There are some hot spots in the handles. The awl is very difficult (bordering on dangerous) to deploy. And the scissors are terrible. It's not my first choice.
I completely agree. I love my Spirit X over any of my leatherman & gerber stuff. The one hand blade was never a worry for me as its no use being left handed anyway and I use a clip'n'carry sheath so the pocket clip was not a factor for me either.
Happy new year to you sir and keep up the good work 🙏👍 Accessories are a trap ?? Multitools are a trap!!😭 My first was The Leatherman Crunch - Vice grips a major plus in my trade as a mechanical technician. Then ,of course, I had to get the Surge - magnificent but too heavy. I have Sogs ,Nextools ,Victorinox and Gerbers and find myself carrying..... the relatively low quality Gerber Octane because.....it has the basics ,easily deployable and it's light . Maybe I am cured (!)
@@maxlvledc Man that is one cool blade... Geniuenly different and dare I say groundbraking.. A bit above my pay grade, but definitely a knife I would like to carry. I'm an EDC knife guy with a few of the icons in my rotation.. From Benchmade Bugout to Spyderco Para 3 to Kizer Dropbear to Civivi Elementum.. But I never saw the Winterblade.. Thanks for presenting this knife.. Maybe if I sell a few of my less carried knifes and add some extra $, I'll be taking a plunge and buy it.. Have a great one man, and a Happy New 2025..
good video. I agree. And since I develop multi-tool cards. I also constantly think about what set of tools would be best in a pocket. (and although many tools are not possible in the multi-tool card format) However, comparing in hands Leatherman, Sog, Gerber, Victorinox, I would also choose Victorinox for the balance of everything. - an excellent set of tools (exactly what is needed), excellent quality / price. The only thing that would be good to improve in all models is a one-handed knife opening, and a larger knife
I'm looking for a multitool to compliment my mountainbike edc. So I'm looking for a multitool which is able to (easily and often) cut brake and shift cables. As far as I know only the Leatherman Surge has that capability. But are there any cheap options out there?
In some countries carrying an opening blade/saw one-handed multi tool can be considered illegal. That leaves manufacturers with the dilemma of ignoring what happens in those countries with the risk of losing sales or abiding to those ridiculous laws and be accused of designing their tools with no ease of use.
Very nice overview and very nice G-SHOCK! One more thing for Victorinox - the lifetime warranty. I have Victorinox SAKs I have used for more than 25 years (if you know what I am saying 😉 ).
The moment you stop learning new things is just before they put you in a pine box. Some of the new flex implements have been let loose (at least upon the US), and hopefully, that means an international release for the companion is soon to follow. Made a suggestion to hvac budget about the Nextorch Pioneer; do the deployed shears fit in the raptor/clone holster?
"I'd be their first customer." Only if you saw it before I did! ;-)
@@mcflyguy161
They shot themselves in the foot, by choosing rivets rather than screws they created a costly warranty nightmare 🫤
@@T-Mo_I have both the squirt and nextool mini sailor. Both are fantastic but the nextool scissors are awesome
Honestly, I think the Gerber Dime has always had a better toolset than the Squirt, so I don't mourn the loss. However, in terms of Leatherman doing the EDC world a disservice, discontinuing the Style PS is unforgivable. Even the new nextool can't hold a candle to it.
Bought myself The Leatherman Arc as my first multitool and for the long term,
well is expensive but all 20 tools is useful to me and I use all of it,
the best multitool is the one that you actually will carry every single day and use all the tool in it.
You are absolutely right, use it or lose it!
Agreed. I say it all the time. Best gear is the gear you have with you.
I just bought my first one too last week. I got mined custom engraved with my aztec heritage.
It's nice to see Victorinox get so much attention. YT reviewers don't emphasize enough the superior quality of this brand when compared to their competitors. I have a Rambler as part of my EDC for years. The toothpick is the most used tool - haha!
Yeah, the toothpicks are surprisingly useful!
@googleuser6635 an different take for sure. What do you prefer?
This channel always delivers a crazy amount of useful information and advice. Thanks for your content!
Glad you think so!
This leads me to one of several load outs:
Now all we need are stick on handle texture like they have for the arc
This video is as awesome, useful, and as important as nothing fancies philosophy of use video & his multi-tool continuum video. You sir are one of the great youtubers of all time. I bow my head to you. Bravo 👏
that is high praise!
Glad to hear about the dual force, not a lot of long term testing out there.
Probably the best multitool video ever
Wow, thanks!
Absolutely. Can't believe that with >230K subscribers there are so few likes.
Yep - I considered buying an Arc but then realized you just can't beat the Wave on my belt!
Hmm, why not the super tinker? The scissors on the vic leave everything else in the dust imo.
Noticed that the vid began and ended with Victorinox. That's a nice full circle for such a storied MT company.
Great work, Dom. The insights you share certainly speak to your 25 years of experience.
Love my Swiss Tool Spirit X. Refined, smooth as butter, quality built. But it’s my weekend carry. Work day carry is my Charge+ or Rebar.
Dude is thorough af ✊🏼
Thanks!
I’ve been a multitool fan my whole life, and I love your picks!! These are all excellent and I would recommend the same picks in the same categories.
really?! right on!
Rambler is my most used multitool as well! It's the GOAT of all keychain multitools!
I reach for mine twice as often as any other multi tool. It is amazing. I don’t use the knife very much, so I wish there was a tool I could swap for that… but I don’t want to lose any of the other tools!
Hace tiempo que yo también llegué a esa conclusión. 😌👌
See what you like."
right on! did I read it right that you are using a swisschamp on your keys? or did you mean minichamp?
@@maxlvledc Swiss Champ, not the mini, and I tried lol. It was a horrible idea because it was waaaaaaay too heavy. So I tried to make the key ring useful instead of taking it off entirely. The pro Olight keychain flashlight was pretty nice on it for a bit till I realized it was taking the chromium layer off the knife and scratching up the scales. So I moved the flashlight to my actual keychain, and then got Swiss Karryclip for it. The clip is a life saver because it makes the champ no longer slosh around in your pocket while running. XD
Speaking of the mini champ though... I wish there was a keychain SAK that was like a companion to the larger Champ. Only one I can think of that can fill that role is the Wenger model with the fingernail clippers and serrated scissors, but I have so many fingernail clippers right now I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.
Thank you😊 Enjoy the Holidays 🎉 and have a happy new year!
Such an amazing roundup! I think you can easily add an extra category for 'speciality' multitools. The epic MUT for example. Otherwise, spot on with everything.
I completely missed it like a dummy
That is a very good option!
Appreciate the feedback!
Speaking from long experience, horizontal appendix belt carry is fantastic for large SAK or Wave size tools 👍
There's no such thing as too much information, especially when it's about a tool that you'll probably use for 10 years !
very very few sheaths that can do that, I like the one from Tools for Gents.
@maxlvledc I've found that $5 AliExpress 0.22 cal magazine pouches are a very good fit and they always have multiple mount options 👍

Great organization of categories! It really simplifies understanding the pros and cons, making it easier to identify specific needs.
did I miss any?
Victorinox is the BEST quality in the multitool world..its not even close.
I switch between the Milwaukee 5 in 1 fast back and the leatherman wave+ for my usual daily carry (Milwaukee for when I work construction and Leatherman for most other times)
Then the Surge for when I’m hunting, camping, working on commercial fishing boats and any other time I have big projects to do. Usually the surge gets used as a back up for when the real tools are out of reach
This was the best multi tool info video I’ve seen and still has left me with choosing between 2 multi tools lol but great great video thank you
Thanks for the compliment
Always fun watching your videos and hearing your take on different models while sipping on a bourbon.
I bought the MX Clip through your link a few weeks ago when you posted about it. It'll be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait to carry and use the hell out of it. Cheers!
let me know how deployment is!
I love the Rambler!.... I would choose the Leatherman Rebar....but to make it perfect I wish they would replace the serrated blade with a large scissors as good as an SAK 91mm.
Just bought one (victorinox mx), just because of this video :) thank you
A great roundup, thanks.
Glad to hear it!
The “Franken-man” has been the 💣… You da man Dom- great video 👊🏻🔥👊🏻
Appreciate that, man!
Right on!
I feel like the swisscard nailcare was deserving of a mention. Perhaps in the companion tool category.
I keep reaching for my Leatherman supertool 300(M) I think it’s very underrated and doesn’t get mentioned enough.
In retrospect, I should have added it to HD section...
It’s a great tool. Just limited with the inside opening tools.
Manager is Discontinued 😢
Manager is Discontinued 😢
Nice!
Cant wait for this vid. I already know its gonna be great.
I've had my Flex for about a month now, and I love it. My Flex Companion and some of the new implements should be here tomorrow.
So me carrying a Victorinox Camper on my keychain and using it probably daily at least, was a good call. Good to have that confirmed.
camper on a keychain? that's heavy isn't it?
@ I was wrong. I have the Tourist.
Great warranty, no doubt
I love my victorinox Deluxe Tinker. I added the plus scales with the pin and pen and it’s all I need
Thanks!
Interesting! Thoughts on skeletool?
Being aware of ease of use is HUGE and I have a lot of tools that sit in a drawer because of it. (Even tho I swore it wouldn't be an issue it was)
I have come back to the SAK as the tool that best fit my EDC needs.
Well said. I'm with you on this one. I too carry a champ on my belt and got the wave in my car out 👍
makes sense.
Nextool Mini-sailor lite (less than $20, and easily replacable), then jetsetter..then maybe a Roxon companion without blades or roxon flex.
@@maxlvledc Thank you, I was thinking Mini Sailor Lite too. Haven't handled one yet but they look well made
From Spain. Great video. Congratulations.
Thank you very much!
It's very good, I should do a video on it
Great video!
Some thoughts:
I have almost 8 years with the Leatherman Surge, but is very heavy.
Very cool! Which one is your daily now?
@@maxlvledc After 7 or 8 years, change the Leatherman Surge, in triste Christmas I adquire Victorinox Swisstool spirit X.
And about 5 years I carry a Tiny Victorinox claasic 58mm, as keychain
Reeeeally awesome video! Thanks) For me I think, victorinox compact in pocket with a key clip and letherman rebar in bag is way to go. They complement great each other. I have compact and want to buy rebar. BTW victorinox spirit mx clip is awesome too, like as the only one tool you need.
That is a good combo for sure!
Great video Dom. I personally would go with the Arc over the MX clip to support the home team. I also didn’t see the Skeletool. It’s so handy and pocketable with a much better blade and driver over the powerpint I think it should have been mention worthy
I thought it over...proprietary bits kill it for me.
Victorinox compact is my favourite to throw in my pocket for casual use, for yard work or when I suspect I might need to do some tinkering the wave is my go to, for real work I bring proper tools.
Looking forward to the video 😊👍
Thank you Dom for the informative video.
Great vid. My latest acquisition is the russian Ratnik 6e6.
Looking forward to this one
You gotta check out the rae sheath for the centerdrive. Its game changer having it deploy as you pull it out.
Im a very hard use tradesman and I love the centerdrive so much. After i removed the bit holder so the pliers close all the way its perfect. I use the wire cutters on steel (welding) wire daily with no issues too.
Sick!
In the last 38 years, I found 2 multi tool pliers that lasted the abuse I gave them. My favorite is an S.O.G. with geared pliers and a Schrade. Bulky but got the job done and keeps going too. Both were in the $40-$70 range.
Excellent work!
Got the Spirit X i couple of weeks ago thanks to your channel. A great tool for sure. Prefer the regular victorinox scissors but thats really the only minus. And if you're carrying a vic folder alongside (which I do) it sorta turns into a plus.
Thanks for another great video!
Glad you like them!
Agreed, QC of Victorinox is S+ tier
Toted a full sized Leatherman for a decade in my small fanny pack in the car for trips. Used it twice.
SAK Tinker and classic for scissors and real tools in car and at home for me.
Thoughtful video. Thank you!
The MX is a great tool for sure! And I agree about the blade
For me the Rocktol Gen-R is my new go to. It is my favorite tool set-up and still has a pocket clip. Love the 1/4 bit driver vs proprietary bits. The magnet trick for the bit driver is awesome also.
fantastic tool.
Have your tried the various clips available for the 91mm?
Never have, but I do like the Nite Ize one that you stick on. I did try the mini Nite Ize S-biner before. Not a fan of the S-biner & ring in the way of some of the tools when I was trying to use them .
Been carrying a Victorinox mini champ and a Swiss Tool Spirit Sheepsfoot for 8 years now. Today I just picked up a Leatherman Arc which may be more robust, but it just doesn't look as pretty nor feel as high end, yet it costs more than double vs the Spirit. Only time will tell how the MagnaCut blade fares.
Curious how it holds up over time
Which 3-layer SAKs is your favorite? Climber, or other? Great call on using the Victorinox Ranger (5 layers) instead of the 4 layer SAKs for woodsman use for the extra tools and better in-hand feel.
Super tinker hands down
Excellent video.
Awesome! Do you ever carry a pocket wrench?
@maxlvledc
I don't carry one.
@jerryc5842 cheers
Nice video, thank you for the chapters
np! I try
I have the Flash, and got it mainly because of the ability to easily change out the tools. I hope at some point that they come out with some other frames that take those tools that don't have fiberglass or glass-filled handles.
What would you prefer?
👍 Manager, Powerpint, Rebar, and Swisstool mx are all amazing. I just asked Leatherman what the actual weight of the Knifeless Rebar is. They've had it and the regular Rebar at 189.94g on their website for years. No way they are exactly the same.
On my home scale, my Rebar weighs 188 grams and my Knifeless Rebar weighs 178 grams. Hope this helps! I bought the knifeless Rebar for my 8 year old daughter so that she can use a multitool without me worrying about her having a knife!
@@waholoopesorry74thanks! I guessed at least 5 grams difference. Hopefully Leatherman replies and fixes their website info.
I thought it was more than that but still 10g is something lol.
@@maxlvledc Mine weighs 179g or 6.3 oz. It's OK. There are some hot spots in the handles. The awl is very difficult (bordering on dangerous) to deploy. And the scissors are terrible. It's not my first choice.
@@ParkerBinion the scissors are the same ones found on the Wave and charge. They have worked pretty well for me, but I don’t use them very hard
I completely agree. I love my Spirit X over any of my leatherman & gerber stuff. The one hand blade was never a worry for me as its no use being left handed anyway and I use a clip'n'carry sheath so the pocket clip was not a factor for me either.
its a super high quality tool
Victorinox should have an option to where you can buy premium steel for your multi-tool for all tools on that specific tool
Happy new year to you sir and keep up the good work 🙏👍
Accessories are a trap ?? Multitools are a trap!!😭 My first was The Leatherman Crunch - Vice grips a major plus in my trade as a mechanical technician. Then ,of course, I had to get the Surge - magnificent but too heavy. I have Sogs ,Nextools ,Victorinox and Gerbers and find myself carrying..... the relatively low quality Gerber Octane because.....it has the basics ,easily deployable and it's light . Maybe I am cured (!)
The Swiss Tool mx clip, perfect for pocket carry with a great set of quality tools!
After bending my fingernail back several times, I went back to Leatherman. I agree it is an amazing tool though that should last a lifetime!
Ounce for ounce, the Original Wave is hard to beat. And the discontinued Sog Power Plier is a close second.
Im a knife guy but can't deciphre what is that folding knife you have? It's obviously an assisted opening but what model?
It's a magnetic automatic/manual called the M-fire from winterblade
@vegass04 careful, winterblade can be addicting
Consider that the clip on the Spirit MX is removable and may be mounted on the opposite side for a better pocket carry.
good video.
I agree. And since I develop multi-tool cards. I also constantly think about what set of tools would be best in a pocket. (and although many tools are not possible in the multi-tool card format)
However, comparing in hands Leatherman, Sog, Gerber, Victorinox, I would also choose Victorinox for the balance of everything.
- an excellent set of tools (exactly what is needed), excellent quality / price.
The only thing that would be good to improve in all models is a one-handed knife opening, and a larger knife
oh really? can you share?
@@maxlvledc I didn't quite understand what exactly to share? Multitools - we sent you a few. MRF brand. I'm currently developing a few more new ones.
I'm looking for a multitool to compliment my mountainbike edc. So I'm looking for a multitool which is able to (easily and often) cut brake and shift cables.
As far as I know only the Leatherman Surge has that capability. But are there any cheap options out there?
Yep, the budget ones and clones can do it np
In some countries carrying an opening blade/saw one-handed multi tool can be considered illegal. That leaves manufacturers with the dilemma of ignoring what happens in those countries with the risk of losing sales or abiding to those ridiculous laws and be accused of designing their tools with no ease of use.
MAX is the multitool GOAT!!!
Thanks! Not really but I am Uber obsessed
Very nice overview and very nice G-SHOCK!
One more thing for Victorinox - the lifetime warranty.
I have Victorinox SAKs I have used for more than 25 years (if you know what I am saying 😉 ).
I like the gshock got it half off on ebay
The moment you stop learning new things is just before they put you in a pine box.
Some of the new flex implements have been let loose (at least upon the US), and hopefully, that means an international release for the companion is soon to follow.
Made a suggestion to hvac budget about the Nextorch Pioneer; do the deployed shears fit in the raptor/clone holster?
Not a chance
Yeeup. Hvac posted a short about it.
