The best summary on Leatherman. The fastest way to get the big picture.
This was so incredibly helpful, thank you. I'm the kind of person that goes down the rabbit hole of nuance for hours whenever I'm making a purchase for value, and there are a lot of nuances to consider when buying a Leatherman. This video broke it down and explained it concisely and excellently.
I’m glad it helped! This video is a result of me going down the rabbit hole and wanting to get all of the information out of my head lol
I got an original 1980s letterman as a hand me down from my dad and while its too precious to actually use as a multitool its amazing how nice it holds up even today
That’s where my black PST is from. It’s got a chipped awl and small flat but it still works great.
So which is the best leatherman tool?@Kayakatools
A very comprehensive overview of Leatherman tools that can be used by the beginner & the pro...😊 Good job, thanks!!
I have multiple Leatherman multi tools. The Rebar is the one I always reach for. It used to be the Signal, but it now lives in my Survival bag. The P2, P4, MUT, WAVE+, PST and Skeletool are the rest of them. Thanks for the video.
This is A+ 👌
I have the OG super tool in black that I was issued in the military over 25 years ago. Still going strong!
I got my first (and second) Leatherman tool in 1985, while I was in basic training. after getting one, I quickly realized that often you need two tools at the same time. this is why I have carried a minimum of two every since. I have had a very wide range of Leatherman tools over the years, and still have most of them. I understand you had limited access to the tools of the past, but you did say "every" and you left off two of my favorite tools. the Micra and the Mini. I picked up a mini when they first came out, and still carried the two on my belt, but kept it in one of the pouches on my LBE, with my PFAK. a while back I did a video on all of my multi tools, and showcased my Leatherman tools as the ones I always return to.
@@OtherThanIntendedPurpose I’ll check out your collection video. There are a lot of great retired tools. For this video I focused on currently available plier based tools for people looking to buy. I did shoutout some notable retired tools at the end, and the PST lineage is shown in text at the beginning but I think I forgot about the mini!
I have a leatherman signal. Got it as a birthday gift. And since Im a geologist that spend a lot of time outside, it works perfect for me. I dont really need another bulky chunk of metal on my belt, oh I have a lot of stuff on it. The one I got is the one with the contour lines on the blade. Absolutely love the design. Man I showed it to many of my friend. Its just so sweet.
All I need is a lightweight plier in the field. This thing saved me many many times from the cactus spikes that pinched deep in my boots haha.
Really nice editing, very engaging with your transitions, green screening / overlapping, you have earned my subscription. Now to look for a third Leatherman....
Thanks. That was my solution to not owning most of these. I have since acquired a few more of them…
Great video! Great summary of the differences between the tools. I've had the wave for years now, and only recently started exploring all the diff variations, and frankly this is by far the best (simplified) explanation of the diff leathermans . Thank you!
Used a Rebar daily for 7 years before I forgot it on my belt and the TSA took it. Replaced it with an Arc and I don't regret the money for a second. Once the pocket clip was removed it is a perfect daily use tool for this tradesman (auto mechanic).
Excellent job putting this together! Carried from all the categories you mapped out, my personal favorite goes to the free series P2/P4/ARC
You finished the video with the best of the best. Victorinos in an endless multitool!!
This is exactly the video I was looking for about a month ago. Ended up buying the skeletool, very nice piece of kit, not really the best at doing anything, but it gets the job done for what I need it for and it’s the perfect size and weight for what I wanted.
I’m glad you found one you like. The skeletool is really handy. Starting with the Skeletool also gives you room to upgrade if you ever want to try another one lol.
What a fascinating intro
😅
Great video, hands down, I'm glad you threw in victorinox as a pic, I love the quality of blade they have.
What a great presentation.
Thanks for sharing. Very detailed oriented. Leatherman just like a Cadillac of all tools.
Excellent video! I was looking at the Leatherman range and couldnt make up my mind on what to get as it sooo confusing. I've now narrowed down my choices to the Wave+ or Arc after watching your video
I got a wave+ yesterday in silver but I recommend the black one. The military use the black ones to avoid detection.
@irishnz_9558 Yeah.. Likely I'd get that. Saw that it's in sale now on Leatherman website
I have my dad's Leatherman KF4 yellow solar one, It's fantastic
I wish they still made them, I still haven’t held anything from the juice line.
Great work summarizing a lot of information in a very easy to understand format. Thanks for putting it together 👍👍👍
Your video is of great quality! I Subscribed instantly.
Welcome to the channel!
This was a very good multi tool video love it thanks buddy 👍
Great breakdown of all Leatherman lineups 👌 Well done!
Amazing video, just what I needed.
I’m glad it helped
5:42 Rev has better plier head, the cutters actually meet and cut wire. So imo if you see it on sale, grab one !
I switched to rev from skeletool, I feel like it's little bit tougher yet still carries well in the pocket.
I have Rev and I very like it!
Agreed!😊 the REV has an excellent plier head & cutters, a very sharp blade, no spring & a package cutter which is excellent...it has a great many uses & if you are out & about on a light day, it's a perfect pocket carry by itself, or with a Swisscard & a favorite folder....if you can get it for a decent price, grab it....
The video I was looking for !
Very nice video! Leatherman has lots of competition now but none really match the quality of assembly but many are close.... I have the Flair, Crunch and a few Juices.. sad to see them discontinued.
Great vid. Leatherman should hire you to educate their customers.
Man Victorinox looks so clean.
This was awesome!
great video mate!
Sadly Germany has a law against carrying one handed knives with locking blades in public.
There is a two handed version of the wave (no cutout on the blade; no idea if that’s actually enough). Would be awesome if Leatherman had more classic tools or blades which only hold loosely in place, something like the mechanism in a victorinox pocket knife is entirely legal even if the blade can be opened using one hand.
What a great summary. Leatherman should pay you to do this
Thanks, I asked, they said no lol
This is the only video you need to watch before picking a tool
The intro on repeat is the Napoleon Dynamite sequel I've been waiting for.
I got a skeletool CX and a FreeP2. The skeletool snapped after 3 months of light use, the P2 has been going on strong taking abuse for a year and a half every single day. I love it but i am considering carrying a SAK instead just to see how it changes things.
Wow great video and overview. Thanks
I remain a huge fan of the original juice (especially cs4). Still use it to this day. And don't get me started on discontinuing the squirt.
I haven’t gotten to try one, I’ve heard a lot of people like them! My Mom has the scissor version of the squirt
I have one of each in my collection! I need a MR CRUNCH 😂
This video is class
this really helps thanks, man.
Amazing video and very informative.
Why is it so underrated?
Cool presentation! But where should the OHT be placed on the "tool tree"?
It would be in a category of its own, off shooting from the wave because of the liner locks. It’s basically Leatherman’s version of a Gerber, pretty cool. I gave it a shoutout at the end but I decided to only include available models in the tree.
@@Kayakatools Very interesting "family tree". Cheers!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've carried my wingman for about a year and dont have too many quarrals with it. I'm debating picking up a free p2 as it's basically a fancier wingman and getting discontinued soon, I heard.
If you do, the wire cutters and scissors will be a big upgrade. It’s also nice to have everything accessible from the outside and flick the pliers open. The file and Philips are pretty similar to the Wingman
Great video. I purchased the Free P4 from your link above, but the blade doesn't have the thumb stud. Did you add that? If so, where did you get it?
Yes I added that. Here is a video I made about it. In the video I liked a different option but I came back around to this one.
ua-cam.com/video/6ZOBz0j8g7Q/v-deo.html
Thank you very very much!! Great video!!!
great video! Thanks!
Great video
I can't get the knife to fold back in what am I doing wrong?
I have a brand new leatherman supertool that is similar to the original pst but with all locking blades and tools, wish they still made it, its perfect
Nice, I see those on eBay sometimes. Do you prefer it to the Supertool 300?
@@Kayakatools honestly yes I do, the original is built better and is far more corrosion resistant than the newer version, I find the handles on the new one dig into my hands as they are not rounded. If they are released the original pst or super to it would get sales
Leatherman should pay you to get this on their website
P2 is a great carry
Great job! This helped a lot.
Long time Wave user but I’m now looking at the Arc. I’m curious…. what’s your opinion of Leathermans with spring pliers? I fumble with my Wave a lot when I use the pliers. I’m curious if spring-opening pliers are more intuitive. Any thoughts on this?
Hey. I prefer not having springs but I do like the pliers to be loose, stiff ones are difficult to use. That said the spring loaded ones I have used felt really natural and easy to use.
If you can find them the oht is a good option for a 100% one handed tool
It is, I did see one in a store but it’s discontinued so I didn’t include it, it is shown at the very end though.
The Curl''s a really underrated tool. Shame it didn't get included.
I cover the Curl at 2:24 , it is a good option.
@@Kayakatools I watched the whole video, yet somehow I missed that!
Meeeh. Doesn't have changeable wirecutters - even rebar have it
Replacing Almaz - Wood Saw and Metal Saw is awesome... only what i miss at Charger vs Surge.
I haven’t tested my charge metal saw but I noticed it’s a lot duller than the Rebar and Swisstool metal saws.
Great video
I like the wingman used it for years and never had a problem the plyers worked well not a big fan of the skeletool but it’s not made for heavy duty work
I’ve heard a lot of people who own the Wingman like it. I liked its toolset and spring loaded pliers are nice. I wouldn’t personally recommend it because I felt the wire cutters and scissors were a step backwards. I did a whole video on the WM if you’re interested ua-cam.com/video/D3XAKyL2gkE/v-deo.htmlsi=fh6Y_mj9Ed3VOKpR
Yeah the Skeletool does have some compromises, the pliers are thin and the handles are only comfortable if you don’t have to really squeeze them
@@Kayakatools I’ll have to check out the video
@@Kayakatools Your videos are absolutely awesome though when you mentioned your second channel in a video about the Firefly knife there was no link that I can find to your second channel And then when I manually searched and found your second channel there were no links to any of the Leatherman tools that you recommended In this video . I know I'm just lazy but it would have been nice not to have to spend the time now to read through the transcript and then do a Google search And I'm old and still have an attention span but I doubt that anyone younger than me who has a frenetic attention span of a fruit fly would not take the effort and you'd lose a subscriber. Not a criticism just a suggestion.
@@AllGoodOutside wow you’re right! I did put an info card with the link but I totally forgot to put it in the description, and product links for this video are a good idea
@@Kayakatools I'm sorry if I missed the info card, I have youtube set up a little differently than normal. And I agree about the product links, They can be a A good way to make extra income As well.
what a fun video, ty
Just curious what thumbstud you have on the Free P4 in the video?
Sure I have a whole video on different thumb studs ua-cam.com/video/6ZOBz0j8g7Q/v-deo.html
Here’s the one I’m using a.aliexpress.com/_mKpg9l2
Name of the blue key ring multi tool, at the end of time video?
That is the retired Squirt. There were plier and scissor versions. Leatherman still makes an older scissor design called the Micra. You can find Squirts on eBay or Nextool makes the mini sailer which is similar to what the Squirt was and comes in plier and scissor versions.
Wave is my favorite with a metal case so not in the pocket for me
I have a Pulse what is that?
That would be in the first category with inside tools. The Pulse has a unique locking system that makes it interesting as well.
@@Kayakatools thanks
Awesome Video! I love the easy opening of the Free Series. Unfortunately Leatherman seems to have discontinued the Free P2 and P4, only keeping the Arc and the Knifes...
Thanks. The Free Ps are not discontinued, they are an amazon exclusive. Every time they go out of stock a UA-camr says they’re discontinued, Leatherman has confirmed they’re not though… for now!
If I person buys the arc for the magnacut steel I get it. If they buy it fir the full size metal file then they don’t understand magnetism.
I’ve heard that a lot but I haven’t seen someone have that problem yet. there are only two magnets, covered by plastic, I think they can just be brushed off.
This is nice and comprehensive. Leatherman could do a better job of explaining things though...
Leatherman needs to just replace their website with this video!
Мне нравится leatherman. Но биты не нравятся. Это хорошо с обычными битами как у daicamping.😊
you mentioned the mut but not the mut eod
There are a lot of variants I didn’t mention such as the Skeletool RX. I felt it strayed from the point of the video. The Charge TTI is a variant tho so it might have been better to talk about the standard less expensive Charge
Missed the micro
Yeah I only covered plier based tools, so no Micra or Raptors etc.
😊😌
Unfortunatly, and im saying this as a fan, none anymore 😂 or get the surge.
I have yet to get the Surge! I feel like the P4 is already bulky for pocket carry
Victorinox on thumbnail 🤣
Every leathermen….misses
A signal 😂

no one uses an awl.
I use one probably once a week and is why I have to carry an Alox Victorinox along with whatever tool or knife I have. No one does the awl/reamer like they do. Leathermans are ok if your goal is to caveman your way through something soft. If you want to actually drill something then the Victorinox specifically the inline reamer only on the 93mm line is the way to go.
i use it quite a lot, for leatherworking and for drilling stuff if you dont have power tools when you need them, that being said, i mean the victorinox one, the leatherman is not quite as useful
I’ve used the Free one for drilling a hole for a drywall anchor (and hammering it in). Also used the threading and screwing functions of that particular one.
Because you don't? Wrong.
I'm a cobbler and use one all the time, as well as a last.
Leatherman blew it when they introduced their proprietary bit driver set up.
My biggest complaint w the bit driver is it doesn’t have any reach, that’s why I prefer a Philips. Something like the Cybertool bit driver could be cool
No from a point of business it worked because everyone bought it. That's business 101, if people buy it, you keep it.
@@Dracomies out of 6 of us, one guy has a Leatherman with their proprietary driver bits. Leaving the 5 of us carrying Gerber center drives. “That’s Business 101”.
