Thank you!
Hey Anthony, thanks for the video! Sometimes when I do a conversion in Silver Efex Pro and bring it back into LR, the black and white image has a feint green or blue tint. Do you know what causes it? I can't for the life of me figure it out!
Wow wish I had have seen this video a year ago. I'm an old Boomer and was in a photo club at the University of Western Australia almost 50 years ago where we used the Zone System. I thought there were just nine zones. Brain fade maybe. I had my own darkroom where I did it all. I certainly missed that and have been hoping to find something exactly like this. The fact that there are the old films that I used is amazing.
Thank you so much for bringing this to life for me.
I bought the DXO package including Silver Efex Pro3 recently and its a big improvement over the original Software from Nik which admittedly I got as a freebie. The film simulations are great fun to experiment with and unlike the old Nik software Ive not experienced any glitches and problems so I think its a worthwhile investment.
This helped me so much, and I've had the collection since before DxO took over. Great job.
Agree, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this plugin :-)
I have been using the free version for about four years. Insane application. I use it both standalone and with LR.
How do you get the free version
That was great Anthony!
Many thanks, Anthony for this overview of Silver Effex pro. I like the way you explain things clear and straightforwardly! I use the Nik Filters (mainly color effex pro and viveza) for my naturephotography. And I should definitivly do more imaging with Silver effex pro!
I’ve love SE. I usually am happy with the fine art preset but will definitely try more customization next image I edit there. Good info !
I’m a non Adobe guy, just can’t stand all their subscription based DRM control freakery, but that is just me. SE works like I worked in the darkroom back in the 60s.Makes perfect sense, and this overview really helped me understand the controls better. I’m DSLR scanning those old B&W negs now and finding that SE is the perfect way to finally adjust them. Full range preset 16 is a good starting point for my thin available light TriX images. The best thing for me in this video was talking about how some controls tend to undo what you have just done it’s previous sliders. Subbed.
TY for the revisit. Nothing compares to Nik's Silver Efex for Control on BW images. Prior to Nik I used Channels in PS, A pain in the ......... ear.
Thanks Anthony. Excellent software I don't utilise enough. A video on Control Points - yes please! Cheers.
I love the Nik Software. Control points are extremely useful and powerful. You really should do a video on them.
Developing the negatives. The zone system balanced exposure against developing time to give the negative the qualities needed to begin printing.
Thanks for another great presentation. I have been doing all my B&W conversions in LR. I have a lot of B&W presets including some film ones that I like to use. Is the $150 SE worth it compared to LR conversions? I appreciate your knowledge and input.
Thanks!
Thank you Robert!
Thanks Anthony. One question. I was following this using Silver Efex Pro 2. Is the upgrade to 3 a worthwhile upgrade ? As you said you use it extensively I thought you would be the best to ask, as you would know the program backwards and what has improved. Thanks again for all you do.
I wish a lot of folks wouldn’t get too into how shadows or highlights are clipped. It doesn’t matter if it’s a good picture and the shadows are jet black etc
Please do more NIK videos, especially Silver Efex Pro, and most especially, Control Points.
Good video - as always - thanks for your video series, they've been a great help. You mention that Raw files can be imported into a standalone version of Silver EFX3, but my standalone version doesn't allow this and the NIK collection FAQ page states that NIK is designed for only jpeg or tiff files...am I missing something?
cheers, Alex
Nice demo, but not a word about what makes this the BEST B&W editor. Seems more like it's your FAVORITE, but again, not a word as to why.
There doesn't seem to be a silver efex pro 3 app yet, not on android or am I missing something?
Ponderous.
What is the difference between S E 2 and 3? Worth the added cost?
Hi Anthony, will the Silver Efex work on B&W scanned negatives as well? I have hundreds of B&W negatives to scan. Thank you Ron.
Yes, of course. Just get them into LR first. Or if using Silverfx as a standalone, convert them to .tiff or .jpg.
@@barrycohen311 Thank you Barry.
If you shoot in monochrome is silver reflex pro 3 still useful or lightroom all you need???
What are the advantages of this over the free version?
1:23 from dpreview: "As a standalone app, Silver Efex can only open images in JPEG or TIFF formats, which rather limits its utility." I've also tried opening RAWs in stand-alone mode and unfortunately it doesn't work. That makes it a no-go for me.
I always waffle back and forth on getting SE and end up not getting it. Honestly, from the videos I've seen, I haven't really seen anything there, other than the film simulations and zone system, that LR doesn't do. As for the presets, they are just presets and there are tons of good LR presets out there for people who don't make their own. I always hear that the control points are a big selling point but with the new filter options in LR, it really doesn't seem to me that the control points are that much better. And I get that some things may be quicker or a touch easier in SEP3 but by the time I roundtrip from LR, that advantage seems minimal.Maybe I'm missing something so please correct me if I'm wrong. I really want to be sold on SE because I keep hearing it is the best BW editor but I'm not yet convinced. I would really love to see a fair and balanced head to head comparison between LR and SEP3 to see just what SEP3 has that LR doesn't.
You mention a lot that resolution doesn’t matter and that even 1 wouldn’t make a difference. Could you make a video demonstrating what this would do? I can’t work out what differences that would make.
I bought into Nik's software many years ago and still have that version. After awhile, you accumulate quite a few of these plugins that you seldom use. I seldom use Nik plugins. Is there a compelling reason why the new Nik software is better and that I should invest and buy it again?
BTW it's "Pan-Atomic"
Ansel Adams was the originator.
pan atomic X a great film low ISO |||||||ASA fine grain
Pan-a-tom'-ic.
Looks like a great product, however, it appears that this application can only be purchased as part of a suite. I have no need for the entire package. Therefore, I will pass on a purchase. If in the future they sell it as a standalone, I am all in.
The only really usefull Nik tool to me honestly. Shame I have to buy the whole package of useless stuff along with it..
Thanks!
Thank you Martin!
Thanks!
Thank you Joseph!
Love your series on the Topaz software and the new Photoshop videos for those intimidated by Photoshop.
