It was so powerful when the question was something along the lines of "Do you like how your race portrayed in the media?" Then nobody moved. It really speaks volumes to our society.

Not really. She was taking bigger steps backwards than when she does step forward. It almost feels like she was more eager to stay in the back. I mean I know that she probably has way less privilege than a lot of others in this vid but she also needs to recognize and accept her privileges. It's nothing to be ashamed of. If you focus on your lack of privilege you'll just end up feeling like a victim of life... But I'm also aware that I could be wrong and she isn't even aware that she's taking unequal steps, so yeah.. still doesn't feel like hugging strangers though. Maybe just a pat in the back and a smile.

This whole thing is stupid. Let the kids decide for themselves on politics, because that's what this is. It's a political opinion that white privilege exists, not a fact. There's evidence in both ways. So don't put it in a school. If you guys want God out of school then let's keep politics out too

    • @Lily-gb7jq

@John Connor does being white count? She has a supportive family, has a car, and didn't grow up in a dangerous neighborhood. That's what I got from the vid. Sure, i don't know what she's been through or going through but my point was, we shouldn't focus on being victims even if there may be a lot of times where we really are one. Don't wallow on self pity and being a victim because then, you'll just hate the world and other people. Rise through it, be kind, help each other and recognize your privilege, know when you can help others and what you could give back to others. We're all more than the pain that the world and other people give us.

I feel the questions of race, gender and sexuality should not be involved and only questions pertaining to wealth and economic opportunities should decide privilege. A poor straight white man does not have more privilege than a rich black lesbian woman because of the race, gender or sexual orientation but the money is the deciding privilege factor

    • @rituparikh2255
      @rituparikh2255 6 років тому +27

Kyle Clare you say this, but I don't think you necessarily understand just how connected race and wealth are in this country. Before the 1870s, Black Americans couldn't own anything with any value. And even after, it wasn't until segregation and the end of Jim Crow that black Americans owned very valuable property. Just as well, young LGBT people are more likely to face homeless and employment discrimination than their straight counter parts. It may be so that a very wealthy black lesbian is more privileged than a very poor white heterosexual, however, in cases where wealth is equal, the black lesbian faces more obstacles due to systemically held prejudices.

This exercise does nothing but teach kids to resent each other based on things they can't change. Trust me, I've seen the effects at a college level; these kids will grow up to believe that they are victims, that nothing is their fault, and will thus do nothing productive to change their stature in society.

Emily Anne Williams Actually it I don't resent anyone for being privilege. I'm just glad people that deny it it exists are are now able to see in a simple format it does and can hopefully accept that reality instead of pretending things are all the same for everyone. Look up Black Wallstreet. Yes these tragedies still effect the black community. Being allowed to grow unencumbered has a completely different outcome then being nocked down. My parents saved for a home in the best neighborhood so I could go to a better school district. When it was known they were black they were stopped from moving into the all white neighborhood. No this wasn't in the 50s or 60s I'm 30. Wonder how different my life would have been had I have been raised with better education. What you are missing Emily (who is white) is that this is supposed to open the eyes of those at the front. Because they are there they have more of a chance to succeed and be in positions in the future to change things in society and make our society more of a meritocracy & not one of "born into priveledge.

    • @tehrackoon2021

The best way to inspire a group of people to rise up above the odds is to tell them from a young age that they are under privileged. That they are at an inherent disadvantage because of something they can't change the color of their skin or their gender. That everyone else has it easier if they are born with the correct skin color. What an inspirational message...
      (sarcasm aside)
Then you look at the facts of life and realize Asians are killing it compared to whites despite not being as privileged... oh shit the argument that privilege affects successful life outcomes just falls apart.
But seriously stop telling minorities they are limited by their privilege. Your privilege won't limit you unless you are brainwashed into believing it will.

For the male/female, black/white dichotomies, I have to say that privilege cannot simply be determined through gender and race. Teachers need to be especially sensitive about the message they are trying to convey to their students, especially under such an exercise that is supposed to reveal more of reality to the students but, instead, warps it with presumptive association of privilege with certain races and genders.

The one girl is so dark she pokes fun at herself to the point where all I and a few others in the room can do is shake our heads an and say things like "I can't belieave you just said that." or "That's Akira for you." so I don't belieave race or gender should play a role because the numbers are way too varient on those catagories as to who has it better or not. Most people in the comments are complaining about how this teaches kids to resent each other and themselves. Yes, that is correct, and it is awful. However, what I'm concerned about is that they were forced to reveal personal information, such as if they were ever sexually harassed or abused, or their sexual orientation. That is information that should not be forced to be told, and being outed or exposing a trauma the child has been through might make the child embarrassed or ashamed. If she wants to teach children to hate each other based on things out of their control, fine. But keep the personal lives and secrets of the children out of it.

Almost every thing mentioned, parents staying together through hard times, parents working to educate their children, and so on, are the results of parents working hard and sacrificing for their children. So in the final analysis privilege is due to better parenting. I thought of this while I watched a mother and her young daughter dance on the hood of a police car during the recent St. Louis riots. I'm damn proud of my privilege and hope to also privilege my children.

This is so stupid, that I did not want to comment and become part of this non sense, but I feel like I need to,
First of, there are some questions that dont make sense at all. Everybody has sometimes an unsafe feeling walking alone at night. I mean, just guess some of these white guys hear something, when they are all alone at home. They might be scared too ;)
But seriously, you can see that it was predetermined that white guys where up front. Females, blacks and others had to step back, while caucasians had to step forward. so Basically doubling the "advantage" of the white folks.
Everybody in modern countries has nearly the same opportunities. There will always be somebody with nicer clothes, more money and therefore having an easier life. Thats Life. Get over it and make the best out of YOUR life, instead of wasting your time on earth being negative, because you may experience something unfair down the line. Change it to one of your strengths and get beyond the point where it holds you down. I tell you one thing. IT WILL HURT, IT WILL TAKE WORK, BUT IT IS WORTH IT.
Where do I know from? Well yeah, I am a caucasian straight male with an intact, supportive familiy. But I am also born physically disadvantaged outside the USA, grew up outside the USA, was called names because of my physical disability, basically worked since I was 15/16 after school, lived until 13 in a social weak area, with drugs, alcoholism and crime right before my door. We were never rich. I wore clothes my brother has worn before me, that were even worn by some other kid before him. I had to see how everybody had Nike sneakers, while I had the cheap kick off version of it. I rarly saw my dad, because he had to work late/night shifts to make money for the family.
I am 25 years old now. Live in an own appartment with my girlfriend and partwise had to rely on welfare. There are days, where I choose to eat a simple meal like noodles with ketchup, so that I make it through the week. Yeah I could call my parents and ask for a few bucks. But during all my life i learned, that whatever does bother you, but not kill you, it will make you stronger and also that things mean more, if you achieve them by yourself. I made my way and graduated with the highest high school degree in germany possible, started job training (takes 3 years) and finished as one of the best. Then attended college, from which I will graduate during next spring as a Bachelor of mechanical engineering as one of the first of the people that started the class at the same time. During college I worked part time and even started another class to become a welding engineer. Next year i will take on the next class of it and finish it while working full time. And none of my parents or brothers has ever attended college. They nearly all took the graduation after 9th grade, started job training and worked ever since then.
So I experienced a lot of situations, where other people were privileged, but I would never put it to them as something negative. I am glad, that they have their priviliges. Because I have also some in other situations. And I tell you something:
YOU WILL NEVER BE GREAT, IF LIFE HAS NOT CHALLENGED YOU. I have seen a lot of people during my life. And often the more priviliged people fuck things up, dont have life experience, because they lived in a safe shell. People with more struggles in their life a way better in taking shit and getting to work. This does not apply on everybody from either side. So fucking stop blaming others for your misery and start taking responsebility for yourself, and stop fucking whining.
Because as soon as you start complaining about other peoples priviliges, you are being a rude whimp and limiting yourself.

I don't see how this exercise is useful other than to make some kids feel guilty and others feel like victims. Not every "step forward" is a positive and not every "step back" is a negative. For instance, your parents might still be married but be horrible parents or be in an unloving relationship. You might be relieved to see your parents get a divorce. You might find some great friends by being part of the LGBT community. You might be at an advantage having grown up with a second language at home. At the end of the day, all of these kids are more privileged than 95% of the world's population.

"If you are white step forward, if you are black step back, if you are female step back. Step back if you are LGBT. Step back if you were born in another country. Notice how everyone in the front is a native born straight Caucasian male? What a weird coincidence! Now what did you learn from the privilege walk?" I learned that when anyone separates people by race, gender, sexual orientation, and where they were born that people will be divided. Is she implying that black gay women born in other countries are any less smart or capable as others? All of those traits are not inherent disadvantages until people like this teacher separate people out in that way. If she didn't specifically separate people by their race, gender, or sexual orientation how would that line up look? Look at the demographics of high paying professions or the college majors leading to those professions like doctors, engineers, and programmers vs the demographics of the country. There are 2.2 million less men in college than women and minorities dominate the highest paying professions. It is minorities like Asians, Indians, and Jews who are disproportionately getting ahead of white Christians. It is because of the values that exist within their families passed down from their cultures, as well as the handouts and active encouragement that society gives specifically to women and minorities that create those stats. Not because whitey is hating on them and holding them down! Anyone with a supportive family and good friend group can get ahead in America, plain and simple. Take it from a minority with divorced parents, abusive step dad with a chronic disease that brought my family near poverty levels from medical costs. Oh and I have a chronic disease myself. But you think I'm privileged because my skin is white and I have a penis. Go F yourself. I studied hard to get a full merit scholarship, worked since age 14 because I had to earn what I wanted and I'm damn sure not going to apologize for balling out in my cushy job now because of my gender and the color of my skin. Kids out there - ignore your English and social studies teachers and pay attention in math and science class. Go into STEM and spend less than you earn and no matter what your background you will ball out like me one day. Peace and love.

White privilege and male privilege is bs. Just because you are a white man, that does not mean gay you have a better chance of living a better life. YOU and your ACTIONS determine your life. If you WORK HARD, you will succeed. That class itself is a prime example. Even though they come from different walks of life, they all made it to a top level class. Being white, being a male, coming from a family where both parents are still together, or money (though money can help) does not determine your outcome in life. Thinking this way is playing a victim card and should not be tolerated.

Oh great this is spreading? How about if you read 2 or 3 books a month, step forward? Your parents stayed together, step forward. You said no to drugs, step forward. Sat on the couch to play video games in the weekend, step back. Lots of variables in life. Look, nobody is saying that everyone gets to start life equally or finish equally. That's impossible and unnatural. The thing is, what your parents did, they matter to where you are now. So what you do now, it's going to matter to where your kids will start in the future. You have nothing to apologize for if your kid happens to be ahead of some, NOTHING!
What we want as a society is for everyone to have the same opportunities available to everyone. Save for obvious physical limitations of course. There's glitches of course but in general, everyone has access to the same opportunities. Yes, some will have to work extra hard than others, hence the difference in starting positions if this line up were to be a race. But at the end of the day, no matter where a person starts, it is their choice whether to run as a hare or a tortoise or anything in between. It doesn't do anybody any good to feel like a victim. Run YOUR race!

Can’t believe this has over 94k views now. I’m the guy in the front, black shirt. The teacher was Mrs Staten. We were class of 2015, McMichael High, AP English IV. Looking back, I can’t believe our school was okay with this. Telling the whites to step forward, blacks to step back is not an example of privilege. Telling females to step back and males to step forward, I mean come on. I knew I was going to be at the front of the line. I’m paying for my own college, and my own bills. I’m working 30-40 hour weeks, and I couldn’t be happier. How am I more privileged? I know for a fact some of those students got scholarships based on their skin color and sex. How is that not a privilege? I got an academic scholarship, a small one at that. That’s not a privilege, that’s hard work paying off. Many will be pleased to know the teacher is no longer employed there either. She left the following semester, not too sure why.
