A common misconception about school is that school is supposed to prepare you for life. When in reality, it just prepares you for work and it was always like this
Idk what you guys are getting but for me our school offers practical real life thing like Business studies (Both household and company works), Technical Graphics (helps designing for houses, computer modelling and artwork), basic financial maths outside of business and now works on personal experience and development. However, alot of students that do complain about the system are the ones who don't try and disrupt class/make the experience worse for others, they complain about all these points but don't actually see how they are there. That might just be me though

The thing I hated most in school was having no freedom of thought. We were given books to read and and later write essays or questionnaires on it, everytime there would be a question on ' what do you think the author/charecter meant by saying so and so'. And you could never answer your opinion, because the teacher would give you a bad grade
To expand on that subject the books we were told to read were about abuse and alcoholism in the family, child beatings or childer killing an animal on accident. Like honestly, who wants to read things like that when they're 16-17

I am not from America, or somewhere else, I live in Kazakhstan (a country next to Russian and China), but, we read A TON of books like this. For example of one book called 'Mumu', russian book.
It's a book where a man has to drown his friend, the dog Mumu, on the orders of the noblewoman (this book is 124 pages long, and the whole book is literally about a man and a noblewoman and a man's dog.). And we are reading it in fifth grade.
Also the book 'Taras Bulba'. It's a book where 'The action takes place in the 16th century, this is a story about the Cossack elder Taras Bulba and his two sons, Andrei and Ostap. Taras leads his sons and their fellow Cossacks in a campaign against the Poles, but the conflict ultimately leads to a tragic and devastating ending for Taras and his family.'. And we also read it in 6 GRADE.

I would answer some questions wrongly even though i knew they were wrong just because I didn't agree. And it sucks.
One thing I always think back to about school was how obsessed my teachers were with making us learn to do our work without the Internet, be it for research purposes, or for studying. The reason they always gave was that "you won't always have access to the Internet," and while this was going on, everyone was expected to have email for work and my dad had to have his phone on his person at all times to respond to emails. Eventually I realized that the teachers were more interested in teaching us how to work in the world they grew up in before the Internet than preparing us for the world in which we would actually have to find jobs.

I had a teacher that did not do grades. He provided feedback, created an engaging class, awarded participation, and gave us time management skills. His financial status basically forced him to transfer to another school. He is living proof of the flaws in our education system.
Now that's what I call being a teacher. Kudos to you and him.

As a writer and a student, i am sad to say that my country 'India' fails at promoting any kind of creative jobs. My parents were happy to know that i was writing and publishing my work online but when told that i'd like to pursue writing in my education and career they told me that it was a 'hobby' and that i should first make money and then think about my hobbies. There has not been a single mention of any kind of creative careers (musicians, writers, painters etc)in any school. They are considered to be like really bad options to make a future of.
For anyone reading this, my parents loves me dearly and are just afraid of seeing me fail.
I have no intention to ever abandon my pen.
Edit: yeah so life update, decided that i like teaching too so i decided to go for a phd in literature. Any one from europe who could explain the exams needed to be given in order to be admitted? I am currently preparing for college entrance exams so even if someone sees this after 3 or 4 years you can still tell me.

I think the worst part about school is that they made a system where it hinders creativity rather than rewards it.
Elementary and Middle school was the worst for me because most of my teachers were really hateful, nothing was done about bullying, the food most of the time wasn't even cooked throughly, and they disbanded both art and band class! And a lot of my friends are very passionate about art.
I feel you dude. My middle school is so strict, if like some hair cover ur eyebrows u literally get punished and each Friday for me has a little test where if u fail it u go to school again on Saturday and the teacher is really hateful and not helpful. They just gave us homework speak random stuff and giving us any motiviation yelling at us for no reasons.
Dude, I have a passion for art, specifically animation but my high school's art department is getting their budget cut more and more because stem and sports are seen as more important. It sucks a lot. Our teachers are also getting demotivated and we lost AP art history :(

I think what schools need to do is put the burden of improvement on the student. I had a math teacher a few years ago that gave students infinite retakes. When the class asked why, he explained that there's more motivation to improve if a student has the chance to redeem themselves. TLDR: Retakes encourage students to study, to get better, rather than wallow in despair and cry about their F grade.

Retakes can be a dangerous tool, though. My music teacher was absolutely terrible, probably the whole class hated her, and part of the reason why is that her tests were EXTREMELY boring and if you failed, you HAD to do them again, only exception was if you didn’t fail by just a bit because yes the teacher did tell you to take a retake if you got like a 6 or something like that
@@victorvirgili4447I think part of the problem in your situation was that the teacher *forced* you to retake the test.
From how it’s written, I think that OG is saying the teacher gave the students the choice to retake and do better. This means instead of forcing the retake on the students, the students had to take initiative and ask to retake the test. This of course also would have the effect of making to willing tester want to do better and apply themselves more towards that goal.
Learned helplessness is a powerful thing. If students are forced to wallow in their failures, they will eventually stop trying.
I would know personally because I suffer from learned helplessness constantly.

I am very lucky to be in a school that actually promotes creativity and gives skills that are useful in the modern world, like TV and Video production, computer science, art and animation, etc.
(Still sucks about the math, science, history and English classes though.)

University is good when you're learning useful information related to your career. There's still plenty that doesn't matter, like learning how to solve complex derivative equations by hand when realistically you would just use a graphing software.
I have also realize the school system is bad. I’ve tried to explain to my mom about how school is useless and she doesn’t care. Our parents don’t care they were taught that school is everything. But now with the internet kids are realizing that school is useless and how they aren’t learning anything
This is why I'm lucky I went to a well-organized school where the teachers were very friendly, trained to help out students and teach us life skills. We even had charities reach out to us for fun opportunities 😢. It was a silver lining to my school life and I wish it was like this elsewhere.

@@naresh6181 I won't disclose the name for privacy reasons, but it was a special school (yes I have autism). Despite all the negative stereotypes out there about them, special ed is actually very interesting and you can meet the most unique, brightest people in your life. Most of them are quite peaceful, considering they shouldn't be overwhelming unlike mainstream schools. And due to their importance, that's why they usually receive support from charities. The teachers had to be trained properly to be educated about autistic students and as such, they show empathy for them. I will forever miss those times...

This is something even middle schoolers are aware of. As students, we always said something like "most of what we learn in school will isn't gonna help us in our lives" and that's true. And then both my parents and teachers would say "you're not applying yourself". Like, no shit! Why would I put so much energy into doing something I am not interested in? Not to mention, they should prioritizing managing finances and refining social/life skills instead of spending a whole week on the Pythagorean Theorem.
Kids need to have a base knowledge of history science math and language arts.

Yah there's some math stuff you don't really need to know unless you are SPECIFICALLY going into a job that does need that type of knowledge of the type. It's annoying and its not even because I don't understand it, I'm a "brilliant" person but I also see that it sorta feels useless unless students choose that type of stuff to learn.
Because career choices change a LOT. They want to teach you the basics for when you make your official decision in college if you plan on it.
If you wanted to go into a career in STEM and you had never been taught basic algebra, you would have a much harder time learning calculus.
The frustrating part about how schools are kinda made to make kids obedient and turn them into good workers is that if there's something getting the way of your studies (like a disability, lower income, health/mental health problems), you're probably gonna fall by the wayside or succeed inspite of how school is built. And if you fail school, then that's pretty bad, and it's not even your fault. It might not even be your family's fault.
It's always frustrating to think about how powers beyond your control, can change and impact so much of your life..
But simply blaming them for everything isn't a fair excuse either..

*So the teacher gave me more challenging work to do. Just kidding. She told my parents I had severe ADD and demanded they either put me on Ritalin or move me to special ed.*

Oh my... That's actually horrible. As someone who's also been (falsely) recommended to a therapist in primary school, I can relate. It's despicable how much schools have that idea of "everyone must be and do the same, and if anyone has an actual personality, they're broken and need to be fixed"

School HAS failed me. At a very young age, I was diagnosed with many learning disabilities that I was put in special ed. They eventually decided to put me with the other students. In lower school, my school would not specialize in my unique way of learning so I spent 5 years stuck with different personal assistants who were supposed to keep an eye on me and it felt like I could never be alone, like there was something wrong with me. Why out of all the other kids, am I the only one with my own personal helper? You can imagine as a little kid, it gets very annoying to be watched all the time. Middle school was worse. Ever since private school, I felt like I was trapped in a prison, never allowed to take classes that brought out my strengths and creative side. I rebelled sometimes. It felt like I always had to be obedient and I could never debate and speak back, otherwise detention. High school was the worst of them all. The high school I went to was a school specifically for kids with learning disabilities and autism. They graded not based off of your skill level, but your BEHAVIOR. Safe to say, I rebelled the most once my needs weren’t being met and I got detention nearly every day. There is a happy ending to this story though. The torture of feeling trapped and never taken seriously got too much, that I moved to my last high school. This last school has GOOD teachers, a good curriculum with barely any exams, and the freedom to choose where I can eat and who I can talk to (which my first high school controlled). I graduated never looking back and gained more knowledge in college than any of these 4 schools could ever give me!

A grading system based on... behavior? Isn't the whole point of special ed schools to help kids who struggle and teach them with an appropriate to their disabilities approach? Behavior is such a subjective thing though, it should NEVER be graded. As a whole I think it's ridiculous to even have a grading system in special ed in the first place, feedback is way more important in this case. Good to hear you moved on with life and had a successful time in college! I am of the same belief that a couple years of college would teach more than eleven ot twelve years of school. It's important to have your own path to knowledge and strive for it. School is just a bunch of pointless information to memorize, as well as putting everyone in the same box, both literally and metaphorically, and it looks like even special ed suffers from similar problems as nobody seems to understand how to teach individuals instead of robots
Your learning disabilities are not an indicator of your capabilities and don't define your intellect! It's not kids with disabilities that are broken, it's the society and the school system. Keep thriving and do your own thing! We are all individuals after all
Schools should teach kids about mental health/disabilities way more, but at the same time I feel like schools need to teach themselves more about mental health since a bunch of kids are stressed and depressed bc of school, and many "special needs groups" mistreat mentally disabled kids

I feel that the "Special Ed" program treats the disabled worse than the normal kids.I am autistic and in 6th grade (I was a special ed kid) My counselor didn't give me any freedom.Everytime I wanted to do something,she would force me into doing the same thing that the rest of the special ed kids are doing.For example,she will force me into going into the special ed room when I actually wanted to stay and play with the normal kids.She also prohibited me from using my phone just because she thinks its "distracting".

Another problem with school is how it plants in you the idea that suffering is the only way to succeed. It often encourages you to spend your free time studying for a future test over spending that time on other enjoyable activities, while also encouraging unhealthy habits like overworking and not taking breaks. Does anybody remember when was the last time a teacher told you to take a break?

I think mental health/conditions should also be an important topic in schools (in a different, more grounded way) since many people have different conditions, not even just neurodivergents. A part of school that completely screwed me is not learning I was autistic sooner, so I beat myself up for not going after opportunities, social situations, or falling behind on grades. Because I didn't take opportunities (and didn't have room for many due to my parents), I got stuck focusing in school's memorization loop.
At the end of school, I was having the worst time since I didn't have the means/experience to figure out what I would be doing and it became so much harder since my brain was too used to school's framework. My mom tried pushing me towards college, but I wouldn't have made it financially or mentally.
Unpopular opinion: Schools are slowly improving at this. In high school, I had to take half a semester of economics, which taught me a lot about how money actually works. I also had to take half a semester of civics, which taught me how the government functions. My community college physics teacher designed his tests so that some of the questions that we would see on the exams would not be anything like the questions on the homework so we actually had to think. I am sure that many people disagree with me but I personally feel like school has prepared me well.
I think that the type of teacher we are given matters more than the actual curriculum itself as the curriculum was designed with a goal to teach kids something valuable and if the teacher fails to convey that, then it seems useless. I also think that it is the duty of the student to try and gleam what they can learn from what is taught, even if they aren't given a grade for it.

As a new teacher myself, I certainly agree. My training built up many of these core practices (like teaching critical thinking and creativity in the classroom) and many districts/school require these in a teachers curriculum.
I can attest to this. While it isn't much, in high school where I live, in certain grades you can choose a couple of subjects that you can attend during a year. Among them was entrepenourship for example. There are a couple of others, related to health, other cultures and debate, but it is still better than nothing.
Kinda wished it was a bit like how my parents described their education back in the day.

I was JUST talking about this with my friends! My idea for the most bare minimum solution is that senior year of high school there should be a class called something like "life readiness." In which you learn your rights and responsibilities as an adult (such as paying taxes).
Idk about your school/country but we had civic classes where we learn more life nuance situation, for example the death penalty if we agreed or disagree and we debated with each, most didn’t care about the class and usually every passe😢
In my school there’s a class called life skills where we learn mostly about jobs and money
I am so grateful for my school district, as they actually care about the students and try to make it enjoyable. Whether it be games, giving out candy for doing well, or just being nice to the students, i got very lucky.

Okay unpopular opinion: homeschooling is worse than actual school
God this video unearthed a number of repressed feelings and memories. I remember always being slow at taking notes in school so I always felt like I was getting behind. Oftentimes I felt frustrated and every time I ever tried venting that frustration I often got talked down to.
And a major problem I saw in my town was that academic success was often key to individual success. I feel so bad for the kids who struggled cause I remember them being looked down upon. I still remember how wild it was the first time I ever had two tests in one day, and the night more I got yelled at by my parents after they told me to go study everything one last time, despite the fact I was very tired. Even though I had gotten everything right when the quizzed me, they told me “Fine, don’t study, fail your tests.”
School often kept me away from spending time with friends since I always had to prioritize studying. My parents always pushed me to study since they understood the best path to success for me was to do well in school. I did well enough to get a great scholarship, and college I would genuinely enjoy as I was taking classes related to my desired career field, and finally got to be more creative and think outside the box with things.
I remember one time in college, my art history, professor set us down, and he was telling us about how stressful it can be with being a student, especially with how we had a lot of complaints about how we were taught and how we were doing it as scholars I even rose my hand and said yeah, I was having a problem with my English professor because she didn’t really help us out, and he legit got up put down his pen and went on a 30 minute rant about how really it’s baffling to him how are College can’t teach kids when does the whole point. Love that guy but seriously why is it that now we have to figure out life when we should’ve had a good view of it
most things in school feel like a side effect. say you learn to do what your told BECAUSE you didnt do that and got in trouble for it. and (in some cases) learn to stand up for yourself when a bully wont leave you alone rather then you learning how to stand up for yourself from school
My high-school taught all it's students to weasel your way out of work. Didn't do your homework? Who cares, we are gonna read the answers out to the class then just ask if you got it right, did you put the effort in and actually do it? Jokes on you no one will ever see your efforts.
Oh no you didn't do the ridiculously long tedious art history project and they are asking for it to be turned in, just say you left the USB at home and will bring it in tomorrow and you will never have to hear about any of it again.
Students catch on fast, and now no one does homework there. You can either rip your hair out for hours trying to do the stupid amount of work for no reward, or put on a fake smile for two seconds and not have to do a thing.

as a child myself, i agree with a lot of your ideas. Knowing how to argue and respect each other's opinions would probably make society a lot better, and knowing how we could manage our money would be VERY helpful in the rest of our lives. but i really think school should also teach us respect and that others will threat you in the same way you treat them, since that would stop a lot of the hate we usually see on social media, and because most of my classmates learned to speak like their parents who i think mocked other people behind their back.
As a new teacher, I wanted to point out that at least in the American Northeast, many of these practices (especially critical thinking and creativity) are not only encouraged but sometimes mandatory for teachers to include in their curriculum. I will say that my teachers do try to engage thinking in our class but it sometimes backfires cus a point that the video made was the fear or failure. I have hope that your years of teaching will be wonderful :)

Just graduated Finnish history teacher here. I’d say our national curriculum is pretty ambitious on things mentioned in this video like critical thinking and trying to see events from the perspectives of different people (we call it historical empathy). However some of these goals are somewhat vague and don’t old teachers to overhaul their ways. The other issue is resources especially for younger teachers who would like to see change. Planning lessons according to the new curriculum takes time and effort outside of working hours so we have a problem of younger teachers burning out.
In highschool yes, however I think it's because of the teachers I had and in some part the school itself. I got to choose my highschool and I picked the one I thought was best for me. The teachers also seemed like they actually liked their job, or at the very least my class, because they would either try to make it entertaining, put lots of effort into the lesson plan, or would meet up with you outside of class if you were struggling. Of course there were still teachers that did none of that and mostly just made you read the textbook but that was the minority. My junior high (middle school) experience was different. I was a smart kid so I was in the pre-AP so I still got the good teachers but the teachers for the other classes clearly didn't care to teach and I would see some of that through my options classes where the classes mixed. That school also had a problem of the teachers treating the pre-AP class nice and everyone else like delinquents, bad school. My highschool experience was kind of surprising because my first year I was in the IB program (smart kid shit) but decided to drop it in my second year because I wanted less homework and the regular classes had more of the good, in my opinion, teachers. For the teachers for IB, while they were still good at their jobs, the classes were harder to sit through because it was almost like you were expected to understand. IB most teachers referred to the class but regular classes more teachers paid more attention to the individuals. Kinda forgot what the original comment said at this point ngl, but having teachers that try to teach and don't give preferential treatment is when I learned the most and showed up to class the most (I had a bad habit of being late/skipping). Also school funding is important, don't let your government's first reaction to budget cuts be gunning for education (and healthcare). Harder for teachers to like and do their job if they can barely live off their wages. My country ain't America bad but still not the greatest.

Trust me in school I found History so boring and I taught it myself, through the way of going backwards starting with local histories and go back as well as tracing my own family tree, I ultimately found some cool history within in digging and turns out I descend from multiple royal families

One big problem is how much of your early life is centered around school. Like im going into my 4th year of high school from September and im completely lost in my life. Back in 9th grade i used to have a friend group, karate lesseons 3 times a week and english course twice a week. Now i only have one friend, spend most of my time inside and wondering what the of going to school even is. Every day, over and over. The same mind numbing school. When i was a kid i used run around and be happy. Was creative and liked drawing. Now i just watch videos and sometimes leave lengthy comments cause i have nothing to do.

I have symptoms of ASD and ADD (going around like crazy in my family tree). Life doesn't feel fair but usually I accept my flaws since we are all flawed in some way. After doing so good in high school and above average in my first year of college I noticed some things were still off. After all that, I realized how bad I am at socializing and trusting people. I'm almost 21 for crying out loud. Almost if I hated talking to people. I'd stutter a lot when talking to strangers and people I already knew. My biggest fears would be job interviews, presentations, and showing off. Loneliness also isn't helping me either. I feel like I want one or two very close friends to socialize with after stressful days, but I only see them for like 15 minutes a week. I also suck at calling and texting. By 2019, I stopped relying on school to fix those skills and wanted to fix them on my own but the more I try, the more I stop trusting people because there are a lot of fake people out there and people who rather socialize on social media. I feel like stress and loneliness will kill me first before anything else does since I suck at dealing with stress and anxiety. Taking anti-stress/anxiety supplements doesn't help much either. They are better than nothing though.
I also forgot to mention how much I hate Gen Z. My own generation. We lack so much critical thinking, reasoning, and understanding.

ASD is Autistic Spectrum Disorder. I was diagnosed with Autism at birth. Luckily, I have the high functioning one so I can function well. Autism affects people in many ways and the spectrum is so big that you may not even tell is some people while you can see it is obvious in a few people. Autism can delay your ability to learn, develop, and do adult things. It can also make you prone to social anxiety which is why people may generalize autism with lack of expression, and inabilities to socialize. I currently use caffeine to get rid of most symptoms. But caffeine definetly comes with some side effects. You can learn more about it on google.
ADD is Attention Deficit Disorder. ADHD is the hyperactive version of ADD. This one is going around my family tree like mad. I haven't been diagnosed yet but other in my family have. It can affect your attention span and make you more impatient. It kind of affects relationships in a negative way. I been doing bad with paying attention when I was a kid, and it still affects me in college. You can learn more about it on google.
I'm also Gen Z and the only reason I hate my generation is because most zoomers can just mindlessly watch tiktok for 3 hours and brush it off like nothing has happened

Being able to socialize now days is more difficult than it should be. I also have issues with social anxiety. I shared to some of my teachers and friends how much actual REAL friends I have and they told me that I have more actual real reliable friends than most people. And I have social anxiety! I was shocked!

I'm pretty sure I forgot 95% of what I learned in school about history. I recently started getting very hooked on learning more and the truth is, history is actually very interesting.
Military leaders that brought glory to their nations, empires that triumphed with an iron fist, the dark ages of humanity, centuries of backstabbing and corruption that still manages to exist, so many of these things are what shaped today's society, countries, culture, everything. It might even make you form new beliefs that you didn't care about before

History is always a W class. You get bad math teachers. English is just annoying. I haven’t had a science teacher in 2 years, so I can’t speak for that. But I have yet to have an actual issue with history.

A bit late on this video but i hope people still get to see this. I was attending one of the more renowned high schools in my state, hell, they even earned the title of college at some point. I want to speak on the subject of atreperneurship, lessons i was REALLY looking forward to since they were our first lessons that were money focused. Little to say my excitment was extinguished when i was met with a 60 y/o, depressed woman that did nothing but give us paragraphs to note and watched do it.

As an accountancy student, tax is one of the hardest subjects to teach due to changing law provisions but can be taught in its most basic concept to schools. I also agree that financial literacy is a must in the world's education system.

Proper ways of arguing can carry you through life. Knowing when to push a topic, knowing when to concede a point and knowing when you just can’t win no matter how right you are, all of those points are important to navigating life. For instance, if you have a problem in the workplace and your boss just wont budge on dealing with it despite the evidence being on your side, it might be time to concede and find a new job.

They should also teach people how to get a job and the importance of trades work. College is not the best option for everyone, not because some kids aren't smart enough for college, but because college doesn't teach you all of the necessary skills for certain jobs and certain types of jobs. You can make just as much money working in a trade as you can working in a job you got through college.

I’m so glad that you brought up how popularity in the end doesn’t matter. I was thinking about what I was like in 2nd or 3rd grade, and it was just me trying to fit in with the popular kids. Now looking back on it, I wasn’t happy, all I wanted to be heard instead of overlooked. I eventually found a group of friends that were nice to me and the year my friend group came together, the popular kids were the gossip queens. (Also school should not make students write a 5 paragraph essay every single time they have to write a report, it’s an important skill to have, but sometimes people just want you to get to the point.)
Finland seems to be doing this pretty well, I got taught about economics, arguing, critical thinking and our history lessons weren't entirely about specific dates.
We still do standardized testing, but it's less stringent and demanding. To be honest, I never really studied for my tests in middle school, I just didn't have to.
We also have goals in every class, though not rewarding hard work with more work would be preferable, would've led to me working faster so I could relax.
That last point is why I sort of just dragged out whatever work I was given to make sure I wasn't just handed more work than everyone else.
I work in a completely unique school myself, their name is "Spaghetti Bridge". Practical learning and Social development is majorly ignored and is a main focus in our school. Check out our schools and our systems to see how we treat school differently.

I took a financial literacy class in my US highschool and the teacher tried teaching as much stuff about finances as possible and it was an amazing class. But that is extremely rare.

Bash me for this if you want, but I think school should prioritize specialization in every way possible. The main problem with our education is that many is disregarded if they do not fit with the status quo put before them, and it will only create discontent people who could never find the fields they belong to or what they actually love.
In Finland, we are experimenting with an individual-centered approach and phenomenon teaching to reform teaching in Finnish schools because the world is digitizing at a fast pace and computers are becoming an even bigger part of our lives all the time. In practice, this can be seen in the way that the amount of traditional and attendance-requiring teaching has been reduced, but the independent and distance learning of students has been increased. However, a new problem is that some children and teenagers are too lazy to do schoolwork independently and alone, even though these are important skills they will need when working in the world of the future.
I totally agree with the history part. I LOVE learning about history, but that is only by comparing how different my life is from that time.

100% agree with you that schools need to teach kids about financial literacy and responsibility. I’m fortunate enough to have a personal finance college professor in my family and learn from her about what it takes to be financially successful. That said, not many people do and often we see people get in bad situations because they don’t know how to manage their money effectively. So to that end, I believe financial education in schools should be a requirement instead of an elective.

I remember my English teacher in my senior year of high school, Mr. R, he was the youngest teacher I had, being in his mid-20s and still going to college. He did exactly what you said, he said why we had to learn it and how we were gonna do it. He let us have fun, especially when we did Hamlet, by allowing us to do whatever sound effect we wanted and allowed us to do basically anything. But when it came down to writing an essay, he told us to write WHATEVER we wanted for it. Some people analyzed of Hamlet was gay, some analyzed if he was hallucinating. I made an essay on the different references and inspirations Hamlet had, using The Lion King and Fire Emblem Three Houses as a source. I still remember emailing him asking how to write MLA sourcing for it since it was a video game. He knew the characters already since he was a massive fan of Kingdom Hearts and Fire Emblem, but it was funny that when I came in the next day, he told me to just try my best with it. He also found it a bit funny since he basically gave no parameters outside of making it three(?) pages long and being in MLA formatting.

That failure bit, I know a bit of it since I have a teacher parent. At least in our school district, you can flunk every class in both elementary and middle school and still be allowed to go to high school. Failure is good if there are repercussions, both good and bad, they need to be taught that otherwise there's nothing stopping them from making extremely terrible mistakes.
I've heard a few stories of students who made those terrible mistakes, there was one who skipped an entire semester in my parent's class because they just didn't want to do it, then they stayed away because they knew that they would never be able to succeed in that class having missed so much. That student will be going to the next grade, even with that track record. When I heard of it, I knew what would happen down the line when they'd get to high school, they'd fail at everything, soon choosing to avoid it all together, and eventually flunk out and never graduate.
Students should strive for success, but not be afraid to fail at it, otherwise they lose the drive to even try to grow and change.
I remember back when I was a wee boy, my parents didn’t pay much attention to me, so I started doing well in school to earn their praise. Sadly, it didn’t work the way I wanted to since I was never “good enough”…
I wish I’d got it through my head that most of what you learn in school is a waste and that there was more to life than good grades and school… Maybe things would be different for me.

I wasn’t really taught how to critically think in school, and only learned it once I taught myself how to program, and I cannot say how much this has helped me out in my education. And about history (my personal favorite subject), I just find it sad that such an interesting subject is mishandled so poorly in the modern education system

I was in three schools.
1-4 class I was in a Village school… In second grade of it my opinion was destroyed… School really sucked and approved bullying me 😭
In 5-7 and half of 8 class I was in other school, the teachers were kind and wanted for me to be a real person. But classmates really hated me because there was a bully from my secondary grade. And he told everyone that I “dig in nose”.
Now, other half of 8th grade and currently in 9th grade. Teachers are rude, yet, some are kind. The classmates are good, expect like 5 people.

Hi Andrei! Actual modern day teacher here! I teach high school math. I think you are on the cusp of making some really good points but you are falling a little flat here, and I think it is because your experience in school is a lot different than what is happening in modern schools today. We both have the same goal here of making education something that is worthwhile to the public but I want to go through each point and explain my viewpoint as a teacher of today.
As a general point to start, students today are near impossible to get engaged, especially when we as teachers have to compete with the constant dopamine hits of social media and video games. A big majority of the students come in, do anywhere from nothing at all to the bare minimum, and leave. These same students will spend several hours even going into god knows how early in the morning, laser focused, playing fortnite, or editing tik toks, but will not spend 5 minutes doing their assignment that I let them do in class. This is not even mentioning that students get pushed through the system without being held back. So yeah it would be nice if the students found learning interesting, but unfortunately unless you have a solution there's not much we as teachers we can do to keep students attention. Education is like broccoli. The modern education systems and frankly, modern society basically expects us as teachers to try to turn broccoli into chocolate cake, or to try to make broccoli taste like chocolate cake, instead of teaching the youth the importance of broccoli.
1) setting goals: We try to do this with our kids! like a said above though, it's hard to get the students involved when they would rather do something else. It is also hard to get students to follow through on a challenging goal because they haven't really been challenged before, and a lot of the younger generations want that instant gratification (which you talked about on your social media video).
2) Failure is good: I 100% agree with this. We should be letting students fail. In our modern education system though our funding is somewhat tied to the graduation rate, because of this, many administrators will pass kids along and they get pushed through the systems which leads to a lot of problems. This year I am going to have kids that are supposed to be high school freshman but read at a 2nd grade level. So tying back into the general point, I'm sure the students would try a little harder in school if there was the possibility of them being held back.
3) Critical Thinking: Again I also think we should be teaching our students critical thinking, but again student engagement yadda yadda.
4) Financial Literacy: I have seen schools actual teaching this subject and students still don't care and don't take it seriously. There is also the issue of teaching a financial literacy class in high school and the students can barely do basic math. I think the other issue is that in retrospect people are often like "yeah they should have taught me about taxes in school", but the kids don't want that, and the kids hardly ever care about finances and financial literacy just like not trying in another math class.
5) History: Most modern history classes try to actually teach history the way you are describing it, by going through the accounts and stories that made up y'know.. history. The only thing controversial is talking about modern politics and things like sexual identity which can be offensive for some parents and students.
6) How to argue: A bit vulgar but correct. I think you should rephrase this to "how to have a conversation". Also back to before, hard to have a deep conversation or a good debate when the students read and write way below grade level.
7) Entrepreneurship. good class, have seen it as "business education" or "business 101". There are also probably way more classes that you didn't have in high school like nursing, welding, diesel mechanics, agriculture, computer science, music composition, and more. It's good for the students to experience multiple careers.
8) Life after school: There seems to be this idea floating around in the edu-sphere nowadays of "the high school experience" or "the school experience" that we want the kids to have the full "high school experience". Not to say your take is wrong or even mine is right, but we can't sit here and say "this is what you are going to experience after high school", so we try our best to teach the students what we know and hopefully they learn, and perhaps when they are old they think "man maybe he was right about needing to know basic math".

Thank you for pointing this out! I'm a teacher and also felt this video was a bit off. I'm not from the USA, so I can't speak for what happens there, but the challenges teachers face here in Brazil are not so different.
It's easy to say things like: "School wants you to absorb content and spit it out thoughtlessly", but we have moved from that approach a bit already, at least theoretically. No good teacher nowadays should ignore the importance of settings goals or promoting critical thinking, for example, and most official curriculums are aligned with these important notions already. The challenge is implementing them, as you stated. We can't ignore how there are many teachers eager to make learning a better experience, but how can we do that when students are completely disengaged or don't give you a chance to?
Of course, the students aren't the main problem, that is not what I'm saying. I get that the system must change to contemplate the generations and teaching methods too, not the other way around. But change takes time, money, effort, and failure. People don't seem to realize that and often ignore the small advancements that have already been accomplished.

I think something to mention is this video isn't aimed at the teachers but the system. Government policy needs to be put in place to reflect these values, good teachers will always try their best but if the government is only going to judge by pass rates then your gonna get alot of people doing the bare minimum to just get the pay check.
I have been out of education since just before covid, and have been voluntarily diving back in due to disappointing A-level results and no work prospects beyond minimum wage jobs, but every place I go to is full of problem teacher who don't turn up to class, or when they do, fail to teach the basics to students. In my access to higher education college course, I taught my class programming because the teacher wouldn't turn up, and just read his useless PowerPoint to us on teams. At the end of the course everyone said that it was only due to me and my efforts that they ever passed that class.
I think failure is bad attituide not just instilled by school but by parents. Some parents really embrace education, so when their child fails instead of telling them it is okay they just lash out yell at them or at least give them a sign they are not happy. Parents need to realize one day that failure is okay and that there is no need to barate the kids about failure.

I was a good student at the start of middle school, getting A or B on most of my exam I wanted to try after failing elementary a lot from getting D and C, I thought I got my shit together but right at 9th grade I found out that I was into creative stuff, It was a new discovery for me making animation and art from buying a drawing tablet with the money I saved. this was never encourage at school at all, I was just inspired from youtube videos and fanarts I saw in the internet.
But the more I was into making this passion improving my skill the more I failed my exams I didn't have much enjoyment memorizing textbooks for exams or paying attention in class at all. All I did was day dreaming thinking what should I do next to improve on my art and many different Ideas. It become really depressing that I went really downhill just because I found out what I wanted to do.
I failed miserably in high school though I did my best to just graduate It didn't feel like I achieve anything from that. All I can think of after that was "thank fucking god" I now make commissions with my drawings and any other request I could get to support my family none of the knowledge I got from high school were ever translated to me making money.
Also I didn't go to college because I don't want to experience something like that again, and hearing my friends that went to college said they are learning unrelated math stuff for computing coding was funny and sad, I don't know If I dodge the bullet for not going to art school but I'm doing happier and better than when I was in high school at least,

Sometimes, I feel like a total outcast in these online discussions. I love school, I love my classmates and my teachers and yet everyone seems to not be that keen on it. I'm probably just lucky to have an enjoyable environment, and for those that don't, don't let that discourage you.
This was the comment I was looking for. I love everything about school, from the way information is presented, to the topics themselves. School is honestly great. (This is coming from someone who's been to both public and private schools btw)
Same here, I disagreed with most of what Andrei said, because all of that has changed since the last time he was in school in most states of the U.S. To the point where I thought he was straight up talking about a school system in a Developing Country.

Honestly shop class and home economics should be added to School as Core curriculum cuz they play way more in life later down the road such as for home economics learning how to properly cook budget and having basic household management while shop class teaches basic mechanics Woodwork and and other factors of manual trade would become way more useful then some abstract academic subjects

I agree with all of this, having just graduated this year these skills were not taught to me and my peers at all, the only reason why I know how most of out of school life works is because of my family, I hope that my generation can change the way schools works, and I will also try my best to help if I succeed in becoming a school teacher
I feel like in recent years schools have kind of tried to fix some of these issues, but not very well. For example, when I was in junior high, it was required to make a goal for what you would do in the study class period. But they attached the goal to a grade, and the goal was unimportant and simple. They also required us to make goals in a very specific way, to the point of where it was more copy and paste then thinking for ourselves.
This seems like quite the shift in content from what you usually post. I don't know if this is just for the sponsor brilliant or if this is a new direction but I like this type of content keep it up
I feel like one thing that’s really important and is looked past a lot is how you aren’t taught laws or your rights and freedoms in school. My school offered a course in Canadian law and almost everyone between the grades 10-12 took that class. Some didn’t even need the credit but took it because this is stuff we should know. A lot of people end up getting involved in the legal system while having absolutely no idea how it works. A lot of people have no idea what their rights are and those who do may not even know how they are supposed to protect them. People need to know this stuff.
