Troy and Gabriella are the most notorious Romeo and Juliet pairs in all of Disney, but has this movie aged as well as you remember? Or maybe it's gotten even better? I want to tear it apart and find out what it is about this movie that stood the test of time.

I went back and rewatched it years later and realized that HSM was really a lighter and softer remake Grease, but without a lot of the ick and includes fixing the moral to not be "change yourself for the person you love". It gave me a lot more respect for the movie... Even if I'll never get over how many times my sister made me listen to those songs.

    • @growingupwithdisney
      @growingupwithdisney Рік тому +44

Yeah, I think HSM had more structure than Grease. Like Grease had more random scenes to show off the relationship (like the dance that’s gonna be on tv was kinda random and they got over Danny doing sports to impress Sandy too quick). HSM scenes made sense from basketball to musical theater and how that affects their friends and the school

I did this musical for school one year, ironically, a lot of students couldn't make it to rehersal because of Basketball and Volleyball so we needed to double cast all of the ensemble. But this musical does hold a special place in my heart because it was the first musical I was in.

Not completely. His voice was blended with Drew Seeley's. I think it's because a lot of Troy's parts required a singing voice that could hit those higher notes, and since Zac's singing voice is on the lower side, they had his voice for the lower parts and Drews for the higher ones. If you pay close attention to the songs 'Start of something new' and 'Breaking free' his first lines for both sound much more like Zac's voice than Drew's. It isn't until he gets into the songs that the blending takes effect.

Mexico had a reality tv special (similar to like American Idol) were the winners would be the six protagonist in the Mexican version of HSM! And what’s cool about that version is that they had changes that applied to the culture of Mexico like changing basketball to soccer. Also they had big Mexican pop stars perform Spanish versions of songs like “What I’ve Been Looking For” and “You Are The Music In Me”. HSM was huge when I was a kid in Mexico! And when I moved to the USA this movie was my way to connect with people in a place so new to me and was also my bridge to learning English. I’ll never forget “Together” means “Juntos”.

honestly, the dad apologizing makes way more sense to me than the friends apologizing. A good dad is able to pick up on their kids' state of mind. I've had plenty of times where my dad has said or done something that upset me, or put pressure on me when he didn't necessarily mean to, and he HAS come to me, unprompted, and apologized for them. So I could very easily see Troy's dad seeing how he was affecting his son, realizing he's been a bit of a shit, and coming to apologize to him before the big game, especially since it might make him feel a bit better and might even help him play better (not that I'm suggesting Dad Bolton had ulterior motives for it or anything lol)

I think the reason I never liked or got into Highschool musical was because in my school the popular kids all did theater and the teacher in charge of the theater groups played favorites massively. I graduated high-school in 2009. For context, the high-school opened up as a 7-to-9 charter school which added class years every year, and I was part of the inaugural 7th-grade class...so when I graduated 12th-grade/legitimate senior year there was only like 50 or so students in my graduating class.
I graduated valedictorian, and was a member of both the Robotics Club and the Math Club despite my curriculum being more of the natural sciences. (Though I was also in the Theater Club, Keyboard Ensemble/Music Club, and participated loosely on the Track team enough that when I went to the 5-year reunion I was apparently a legend...)
There was a year, actually like 2005 or early 2006, where the one person attempted to push me down the stairs because I was both a Nerd/Geek and a Theater Kid. I was able to catch my balance and instead slammed my entire backpack filled with every textbook I had (because only a few weeks before one of their friends had used 'going to the bathroom' as an excuse to vandalize my locker in the middle of a class period!) into them, causing them to instead be the one pushed down the stairs.
The next year, 2006/2007, some of their friends realized that I would help the few friends I had either in letting them copy my homework or even teaching them the subjects when there was something they didn't understand. But that whenever the bully tried to get my homework I would literally destroy it and redo the entire assignment in the class it was due.
There was one time towards the end of the 2006-2007 school year, where the person who tried to push me down the stairs even tried to grab my homework as I was waiting with my weed-smoking friends for the doors to open. The bully demanded I hand my homework over, so I grabbed my friend's lighter and burned the assignment which was literally due in less than 20 minutes.
And almost absolutely the reason for that popularity was because I was the reason most of them graduated or got sports scholarships or such.
It wasn't until Spring 2009 that I would say I was genuinely "popular", and even then I wasn't actually aware because my entire habit since the school opened and I began having my books and notebooks stolen and even my clothes stolen during the middle of gym class...was to not talk with anyone more than I had to.
Because we had so few students, my Junior and Senior years of High-School combined the Junior and Senior classes for prom. And my unawareness of my popularity, because no one told me that I was popular and I almost never talked to anyone who didn't originally begin talking to me, meant that I intentionally didn't tell my parents about prom my Junior year...and then my parents actually forced me to go to Prom my Senior Year. I only realized I was popular when, after the mandatory "Prom Queen slow-dances with Prom King" song, the Prom Queen and Prom Princess (the Junior year's prom-queen equivalent) had a little play-fight over who would get to dance with me first.
And even with that, I was expecting a Carrie situation where they dump pig's blood on my head at the end of the dance. Or intentionally stick their foot out and cause me to fall over it in the middle of a song. Because there would have been no other reason for the Prom Queen to ask the Valedictorian to a dance.
    ----
Actually, that highlights that this movie had arguably a MASSIVE impact on cultural zeitgeist. I'm curious how many of my classmates would watch High-School Musical repeatedly or find themselves singing the songs and, because of the "do what you love"/"we're stronger together" "anti-segregation/anti-clique" message, eventually decided to actually try speaking to the Smart Nerdy Loner Kid.

I agree that on rewatch now that I'm older, it'd be easy to see how cheese it was but it's still fun to watch.

I mean it was also a super tiny school just starting out, my freshman class came in when the school had its first set of seniors lol, but no one was ever made fun of for being smart. In my grade the girl that was at the top of the class was also on sports teams while volunteering. No one really got picked on outside of a few people. But I mean if these movies got with the times theyd have to come up with more complex problems than bullying and social perception.

My school was similar, though it started a couple years before HSM released and began as a 7-to-9 school where the second year of operation the 9th-grade class became the 10th-grade class and then the next year that 10th-grade class became the 11th-grade class... etc.
I was always on the top of the class, was always volunteering, and was a member of both the Track team and Math Club.
There was one year, like the third year so I was in 9th grade at the time, where for the full week when we had Gym Class one of my classmates would steal my uniform and I would have to spend the rest of the school-day in my gym clothes until the faculty opened every locker to find the stolen clothes. Which would get that person suspended or having Saturday detention, but the next day another of my classmates would steal my clothes...and then that student got the same punishment and then the next day another classmate would steal my clothes.
That wasn't the first or the last time my clothes would be stolen during gym class, but that was the longest consecutive span of it.
Also that time one of the students tried to push me down the stairs for, as far as I know because I didn't even talk with anyone!, being the smartest kid in the class. Instead, they failed and I ended up pushing them down the stairs instead. Can you say a week's suspension and having to attend Saturday Detention (which I got out of partway through because the Math Teacher/head of Math Club came down and pulled me out)?
Almost certainly the shift where "all the most popular kids were also the smartest ones" happened was in the immediate time-span surrounding when HSM was being made and aired.

No you are right, if you're really actually super smart or did well in class in general (cuz you don't always have to be super smart to do well in class), weren't a jerk about it, willing to help out you but not a doormat, were at the least decently liked. I'd argue the most popular girl at 1st grade was the smart one who was willing to help and I was better liked then some others smart girls or boys because I was the one who wasn't so snobbish about it. This could differ region to region, but I do think media tends to overexaggerate the smart person hate which I think was affected by how some smart people are snobbish or just lacks social skills (the latter I do kinda relate).

Hon, first period was homeroom- where major announcements will be said or handed out and the school’s attendance for state funding was taken. It’s very short and while in some school’s it is combined with an actual class but obviously not in the HSM universe- I definitely understand this critique but I will also defend it till the day I die.

I remember the books. I ordered them in a set from the scholastic book order service that elementary schools periodically had. Lost them at some point in the packing process when my apartment’s kitchen needed to be repaired and renovated though.
The three books that I remembered the most were the one where they took a trip to New York, the one where they took their SATs, and the one that had prom (or was it a different dance event? All I remember is that the theme of the event was that guys couldn’t ask out the girls, only the reverse was allowed, and Gabriela was too distracted from overhearing a misleading phone conversation her mother had to ask out Troy, with some Sharpay interference involved.

The status quo song is pretty catchy, but kind of weird when you listen to it as you’re older. You had a jock who has a backup career if basketball doesn’t work out, a brain who is more well-rounded and appreciates the arts, and a skater “bum“ that appreciates classical music. The ones with actual goals outside of high school are told to “stay in their lane “
Sad fact: the actor that played the skater dude was arrested for robbing a pizzeria he used to work at gunpoint a couple years ago. Thankfully no one was hurt

I wasn't popular. It wasn't because I was good at school. It was because socially awkward and sensitive were my middle names. I didn't NOT like being called nicknames etc. (This got better in High School but I was in online school for most of my high school time.) Also, I had a talent for embarrassing myself, way worst than most kids. I didn't connect with most of the kids, and they didn't connect with me.
I don't know where the need for having stereotypes for high schoolers comes from, there were some brilliant kids at my school who could be on the honor roll and were really good at school sports. As someone that couldn't even figure out how to play soccer after several PE classes and after-school lessons in elementary school, and had to kick the ball around. I am jealous that they could do one sport let alone more than one. I am only good at walking and skiing if I can not freak out lol.
Honestly, I do absolutely love High School Musical and all its cheesiness. The characters are also perfect for angsty fanfiction. Like on the levels of Danny Phantom Fanfiction. It is beautiful.
Overall it is an outdated stereotype, they should be making jokes about the know-it-all kind od person. Sadly, I have channeled that a few times.

Answers from a musical theatre nerd:
A lot of the songs that are not literally being performed are called Non-diegetic songs
Meaning they aren’t happening within the context of the show, and instead are there to represent either the conflict happening at the moment or the internal dialogue.
So the status quo song in a non musical context would be written as a bunch of kids being honest to their respective cliques about their hobbies and pretty much their friends either making fun of them cause they think it’s lame or they start interacting with the other cliques on shared interest and Sharpey is not liking it because it’s giving her paranoia about her having potential competition in the one thing she feels confident in and she doesn’t like change that doesn’t benefit her.
Meanwhile since the news of Troy and Gabriella auditioning is shocking to this cliquey school, both them being non theatre/music kids and them being from arguably the most stereotypically opposite cliques, people stare at Gabriella because they both are seeing the known rich drama Queen have a run for her money, and that the popular jock boy is getting with the new nerdy girl because they auditioned together so they must be a couple right? At least, according to these weird high schoolers so obsessed with two people that have nothing to do with them.

At my high school if you were smart and at least decently good looking, you were part of the popular kids. Of course if you were also a cheerleader or part of the poms team or a jock? You were also popular too but more than half of them were actually pretty smart and I'm just talking about the girls. The guys on the other hand different story but if you were a smart pretty girl like school smart not street smart then you were popular
I remember this one girl. She was so nice to everyone. She was also one of the smartest kids in our grade because she stayed in the regular classes and not go into the AP classes because it's smarter to be the best in your class when it's easier to be the best in your class She was also very pretty blonde. She was tiny, thin and she was an ice skater. Everyone knew her everyone loved her and she was also very kind and it wasn't a fake kind of nice. It was genuine kindness which made it really hard to hate her.
And she also had a really pretty name too that wasn't very common.
On the other hand, if you're pretty, but people get jealous of you because you're just pretty and maybe a little dumb or get excited about things that aren't very popular at that time You're known as the crazy pretty psycho that was the rumor that was spread about me. That's why people specifically boys did not want to go out with me cuz even though they thought I was pretty every time they heard about me they hurt. I was also psycho. It was not true. I got excited about Doctor Who geeky things and I didn't make friends very well because I was socially awkward and ADHD. So yeah high school was not what it was promised to be like. It wasn't the cliques you were prepared for. It was the cliques you weren't prepared for.

I recently rewatched the trilogy with my boyfriend and we love it even more now than when we were kids. The songs are still straight up bops and aged well imo. As for your comment about the plothole of them singing when they were against singing, I think musicals are meant to be enjoyed by observing from the meta perspective. We as the audience see and hear them sing and dance, but they are not actually doing so. It is only written that way to help the flow of the story as well as cram everything needed in the limited time they have. Of course with songs like the intro one at the party, they are actually singing and dancing because they are expected to in that situation. Same as when they are auditioning or rehearsing. I guess it's just confusing to know how their universe works when they sing and dance in so many different situations.
