one thing i never understood from HSM 3 was why Grabriella had to leave early. Early acceptance does not mean you no longer have to finish high school it means that you have been accepted and secured your spot for the next semester before everyone else did, so why is she moving away she when she hasn't even graduated from high school yet. Even if that is what it meant why would you start college classes in the middle of the semester, you're not gonna pass any classes if you missed half a semester of assignments.

It wasn't starting classes early, it was some kind of special program for the super smart kids to get a feel for the college before they start for realsies in August. My problem is that could've and should've been a summer program. Why did it have to start right then in April or May? Just wait until June or July.

    • @Happygigi700
      @Happygigi700 Рік тому +111

Exactly why didn’t it start in July?!? It always bothered me. Speaking as a high school counselor here, students aren’t officially done until they receive their final transcripts which aren’t done until the beginning of June/middle of June because teachers need time to submit grades and school counselors need time to check it over to make sure all students have all their credits. With the amount of the students who went to East High, this would have taken a while. Colleges know this, so it is super unrealistic for colleges to start a program in the middle of April/May. An orientation or new student welcoming sure but not full on program!

Where I live, colleges offer a month worth of "leveling" classes for freshmen before their actual first semester stars in order for them to get used to the rythems of college life, more difficult majors or studies like med school have an even longer leveling course, with one set of classes usually at the tail end of the school year, in November, and the other right before the semester begins. Many senior high schoolers actually leave high school earlier to attend these classes, so I always thought that's what Gabriella was doing lol

I agree that Sharpay not going to a prestigious performing arts university feels wrong. It would even feel more in-character if her parents just bought her a spot. She didn’t need the scholarship anyways. She just would not settle with someplace local.

    • @bowie3503
      @bowie3503 Рік тому +148

Actually I think her working for it really fleshes her character out. It's one of those moments that show she's genuine. She doesn't just want her spot bought because she loves fashion and theater and puts her heart and soul into both. When you love something so mucj, its only natural that you learn as much as you can. The learning process is apart of that love. Also, It's so Sharpay to return to East high just to spite Tiara. That is a level of petty that only sharpay would display. We also have to remember that she never stayed at east high. I think in "Sharpays fabulous adventure" she moved on go broadway, right?

The only character who could’ve been deemed as the antagonist in the 3rd movie was Tiara but then she was only an antagonist to Sharpay, nobody else. What i don't understand is- why couldn't Sharpay still go to Julliard? Who got the Julliard scholarship doesn't matter, Ryan and Sharpay's family is loaded, they could easily afford the tuition for both of them (and the family clearly cares about Sharpay in the least considering how much they spoiled her). Getting a scholarship does not equal admittance. There were a lot of things in the 3rd movie regarding college that were seemingly written by people who have never applied to college in hs or for scholarships. Another commenter mentioned the early admittance issue. Were the writers really struggling so much with the plot and conflicts that they literally had to make up how things work and punish Sharpay for existing while they were at it? They were grasping for straws so hard they got some that didn't even exist, i swear.

In my personal opinion, Sharpay was a touch more victim than she was villain. And it all comes down to the characterization that they gave her in the second movie. She's clearly very spoiled and was raised to believe a certain way. That things should be her way or the highway. The fact that she (A teenager) can casually tell the manager of the country club how to treat each employee that was hired on is extremely telling. With that, keeping in mind that she is a teenager, emotions are running high. Everything feels like a life or death situation.
Two new kids coming along and hearing everyone talk about how amazing they are? That can make her scared that she's not good enough. So she does what her parents taught her, and get her way. She's passionate about this. This is her passion. This is what she wants to do for the remainder of her life. This is her career aspiration. To constantly have people snickering about her passion and whispering about how these two kids that aren't even all that into theater in the first place are so much better than her? Yeah, that's going to drive her to do extreme things.
In the second movie, yeah. Antagonist, but not villain. Most of the things she does, she can't exactly do on her own. The country club manager and her parents were the ones allowing it to happen because that is the environment she was raised in. When it came down to it, she was a girl who liked a boy and wanted to spend time with him. Wanted to show him her passions and get him passionate in it too because he had shown interest in the last movie. And she does let go of her obsession at the end and has a really sweet and vulnerable moment where she admits that it hurts that Troy is willing to do the talent show for his friends but not for her, which also lets the audience know that was what she wanted. She wanted him to want to do this stuff with her. And then she's completely cut out of the end performance. And sure, comeuppance. But that was a bit much.
Then we come to the third movie. No one else wanted to do the musical. She did. Kelsey just didn't want to work with her because "diva." Which is kind of funny because... Girl if you're going to work in the theater industry writing musicals, then you're going to work with plenty of divas and you're not going to have a say in it. You won't be able to write down your friends names and get them in instead. It felt like people were just mean to Sharpay in this movie for the sake of being mean to her.
Age is always the biggest thing to look at for these characters. And who knows? Maybe if Troy and Gabriella hadn't stolen the spotlight in the first movie, perhaps Julliard would've accepted Sharpay. Sharpay got no chance to shine for them. This was her passion and drive and she was relegated to a point and laugh character.
Ryan definitely deserved his place in Juliard though. I mean, he taught the kids to dance in the second movie. Kid's got talent.

      You are wrong.
Sharpay was never a victim. She suffered because of herself only.
Yeah in HSM 1 , I understood Sharpay and sympathized with her. It is hard for her as she always has been in spotlight , her spotlight getting snatched away by troy and gabriella made her insecure. But she should have been confident of her performance. She tried to sabotage Troy and Gabriella's performance , that doesn't make her victim. Victims don't sabotage other people. Atleast I had sympathy for her in Hsm 1.
But in HSM 2 , she is pure evil. She does everything to take away Troy from Gabriella , she tries to break two people who are in love. She uses her power and wealth to lure Troy, give him admission in big university and keep him busy so he and Gabriella breaks up. So evil ! Let's not forget how she treated other wildcats and Gabriella, she literally treated them as her slave. How do u think even she is a victim? Lol. She made everyone's summer miserable. That's why she got punishment at last. She couldn't perform fully with Troy or Break the couple up , didn't even win the dazzle award. Atleast she becomes more human as she gives the award to her brother.
She is somewhat less evil and more fun in HSM 3 , even in that she tries to break Troy and Gabriella up , letting Troy know about Gabriella got admission on Stamford. So she could perform with Troy. Why she wants to perform with others bf? Troy isn't supposed to perform with her , he is in love with Gabriella. If Sharpay didn't do all this evil plans , included Troy in her dance , she could have won scholarship in Julliard. She messed her opportunity because of her own
      Greeds.
Sharpay is iconic ,I love her. She is entertaining. But calling her victim is lol , she is always the villain who we love

About Troy though: HE IS A PUSHOVER!!! He'll do anything to please people. He'll only feel comfortable with investing in his own true passions with there is someone with him doing it. He connected wityh Gabriela over music. He invested in the show because he knew he could win her over to do it with him. I think the only reasons why Troy plays baskeybal is because it makes his father happy and because he gets to hangout with a bunch of people who constantly validate him. THE TRUE VILLAIN IS TROY'S FATHERRR!!! Had that man allowed his son to invest in his true passions, maybe he would've ended up with Sharpay. A trophy husband? Sure, but had he grew in that club with her, he would be doing A LOT to please her. Just like Ryan. If not more. Once Sharpay started setting Troy up for something he was openly devoted and interested, he changed into Shapay's way VERY clickly!!!
EDIT- I also think he isdeeply repressed. Not in sexualiy, but in his ability to speak his mind. Music gave him that power. I do think he REALLY does grow into music very fast, bu he won't admit cause daddy expects him to be playing basketbal. And how could the biggest insecure pushover of all time ever go against daddy?
I think Troy FEARS Sharpay because of how comfortable she is with being herself and not apologizing for it. Because she goes after what she wants headstrongly. And Troy fears she could make him be like that. He believes himself not ready.

And I the boy that got with her was nice and supportive, just what she needed, and since he was a filmmaker they will become a power couple one day. And Ashley‘s vocal range really shines in the song I’m New York’s best kept secret. But the humiliation in HSM3 still unforgivable, I’ll take that spin off apology but I’m still ofended

Tbf I think a lot of people forget that villains can be victims, heroes can be aggressors or sometimes they are just neither. Villain-Victim is not a dichotomy. Sharpay is not a kind person. She definitely grows somewhat to the end, but she does evil stuff. But in a way a lot of mean things she does to main characters are provoked by her being a victim of a circumstances. Being constantly shoved away from doing what she actually loves by people who don’t really care that much is very frustrating /at least/ for even good and kind people. So yeah, she is a villain in second and partly first movie. Yeah, she is a victim in all three too with various degrees. She is both at the same time and also neither.
I think a lot of the reason why Sharpay is so beloved lately and people try to reclaim her is a secretly good person, is that out of the main characters she is actually the one who has to learn and grow and get more dimensions to her. Like, what are the character arcs of Troy and Gabriella really? Not as plot points with whole ‘I want to sing but also want to play basketball’, but their personalities? They literally practically don’t grow or change other than maybe getting just less childish. Kind of all. Meanwhile Sharpay gets to go through so many ups and downs and we see her at her lowest, and we see her trying to get to her highest, and she takes all her losses at the end of the movies like a champ, which is honestly an undeniably admirable trait of hers - being able to accept the loss at the end of the day and try again. It’s hard to NOT root for her.
So yeah, trying to make her seem better than she is and the whole ‘actually caring for Troy’ part is pretty delusional. But it comes from the place of just wanting to let characters get better and grow from their mistakes.
There was a lot of movies at the time where are protagonists are either already good at everything somehow, pretty AND already a good person or protagonists are supposed to be good but then you look at them as an older person and they are meaner than the antagonist. And listen, neither is a bad character trope when treated right, nor I am saying that Troy and Gabriella are not enjoyable as characters. It’s just they are not as fascinating because they kind of already have everything they need.
Anyway, Sharpay is awesome, I love her.

Well Just like Chad didn’t support troy choosing the musical over basketball in hsm1 and him and Taylor trying to break them up, or when he was mad a Troy for wanting a scholarship that was going to help him conquer his dreams which Sharpay offered to help him with and didn’t get mad at him for wanting to get closer to his dreams but ok😭Everyone mad at sharpay and never talk about everyone else and how they treated each other like crap lol. Even though she worked real hard for what she wanted and didn’t have things handed to her like everyone else she still managed to congratulate everyone else for their accomplishments each movie.. Hsm 1 when Gabriella got the main role, sharpay congratulated her😁Hsm 3 congratulated her brother on getting the scholarship she wanted and didn’t have any jealousy towards them, now I’m not saying she wasn’t wrong, she did treat all of them wrong and was a narcissist but that doesn’t take away from the fact that her character changed the most (all 3 movies) more than any other character🫶🏽🫶🏽🙂🙂🙂Just stated my opinion since I have freedom of speech but ok💗💗

Sharpay was just a rich theatre nerd who had a crush on the high school jock but was able to become friends with him later on. • @theayanna56789
    @theayanna56789 Рік тому +25

From my perspective, the main reason Sharpay is seen as a villain isn't really the characters fault, it's the fact that she was never given a full character arc throughout all three movies. Sharpay grows through the course of each movie but goes back to the same starting point with the same spoiled attitude and antagonistic goals at the beginning of each sequel. Had they made her upset about losing the part at the end of HSM 1, the next movie would've made a lot more sense. I understand that they most likely couldn't have done that when creating the first film because they didn't know if they would be making a sequel/sequels, but I just think of how much of a better character she would've been had the ending of the first movie been planned out better.

Unpopular opinion for some reason but Sharpay was without a doubt the villain of the high school musical franchise. She was mad a Troy and Gabriella for getting the lead in the school play when that wasn’t their fault. She had to pay for Troy’s love and when he didn’t even like her. However, I’ll give Sharpay grace because in the final film she actually doesn’t do anything horrible aside from being a lil selfish. Still tho there is a villain in High School Musical and it’s her and people don’t want to admit that because they think they’re being edgy or different by suggesting she’s some sort of hero or they can’t fathom loving a villain for being a villain which is ok.

She had no right to be so territorial over a high school play, so what if Troy and Gabriella aren’t the traditional theater kids? How many actors and singers didn’t have formal training and became great or started in another field? Her character was clearly an insecure person and spoiled brat, she’s not a victim because she loves theater so much, how did she expect to get until Broadway? By mean girling her way there? She’d still have to audition against other people, she was a villain, she actively sabotaged people’s chances of possibly advancing her and most Definitely was a bully and ruined people’s lives

There's a few things I'd like to point out about HSM1. First of all, they're all teenagers, and teenagers are dumb, I can totally see someone being mocked for singing, specially at a musical. In fact, I've seen boys made fun of just because they liked HSM because is supposed to be a "girls movie" or whatever, so yeah, being afraid to admit to liking something is totally understandable.
Second, about Sharpay changing the mood of the song. It's hard to say if that's ok because it depends on the context of the musical. Is that song supposed to be sung in a more emotional part of the musical? If yes, then I can see why changing it could make the musical worse, even if the song is a banger anyway.
Third, academic decathlons requires as much training and studying as any other activity, so I'd imagine that the same problems that Troy had of conciliation are also there for Gabriela, even if not explicitly shown.
Fourth, as stupid as their plans were, I can totally see Gabriela, being a teenager, getting sad about what she heard Troy said and taking it at face value, specially because Gabriela is often portraited as being very insecure and as a insecure person myself I can say it doesn't take much for that to happen.
Fifth, the main reason everyone was so on their toes about Troy getting into theater is because there's a very important game comming up and Troy is the star of the team, so they want him to be 100% focused on the game. I'm sure if Troy got into theater during the offseason people wouldn't have minded as much.
Sixth, yeah, their friends were assholes, and the movie did in fact highlight that.
Seventh, HSM songs are a banger to this day bro! Love it!
Finally, I do consider Sharpay as a villain on HSM1. I mean, she did try to intimidate and sabotage Troy and Gabriela even before they joined the auditions, which is not something a good person would do, period. And yes, she did come to terms with not being the lead of the show, but only after all hope was lost. IMO, had Sharpay spend less time worrying about Troy and Gabriela and more time training she may even had beaten them, who knows, it would be a good leasson to take from it at least.
Overall I think the show gave a very good message for people to follow their dreams and not stick to the stereotypes people associated them from. Great movie and great video so far!

I disagree, Sharpay is not a villain. Her years of hardwork were being thrown in her face at HSM1 by people who had other hobbies. Her entire life was based on theater, it was her joy and her genuine mission in life. She overreacted in the situation but that doesn’t make her a villain.

I think for HSM Sharpay is antagonistic, but in a more justified way. The fact that the musical will likely have shows on the same day as basketball games and decathlons is important, it shows they aren't completely committed to being the leads in this musical. The fact that Gabrielle DURING THE CALLBACK says "I can't [perform], not in front of all of these people" just shows that she wasn't really ready to be the main character in the musical where she would,,, you know HAVE TO PERFORM (its not that serious but that bit ALWAYS annoyed me lolol)
In HSM 2 she's a villain, but I think Troy is really the primary antagonist, he's doing it to himself because at any moment he could've said no to her, he could've cancelled plans with her, he could've communicated better with his friends. I mean she's bad but he's right there brushing his friends off and ditching his girlfriend without any warning, only apologies after the fact. The worst move Sharpay made was cancelling her performance with Ryan, but as a theater kid with a theater kid brother, let me tell you: if my brother pulled what Ryan did to Sharpay (switching the songs) on me??? We'd be F I G H T I N G. I mean,,, we would've already fought if I cut him from a performance but STILL. Ryan forming a new act to defeat her in the talent show felt so much more on brand than Sharpay's "okay, so you took my performance I've been preparing all summer for five minutes ago, but I'm over it- ryan you really deserve this award!" moment at the end imo
Final movie kind of showed how Over Them™ Sharpay was, for me. Her and Troy's "when's the big game?" "yesterday." conversation exemplified for me that, whatever she ended up doing, it was for herself. I think this movie just showed that Gabriella and Troy (and all of the wildcats besides Sharpay, Kelsi and Ryan) think of theater as secondary to their relationships, their academics, their athletics- whatever it is in the moment, they'll choose that over the musical if theres the slightest pushback. There was also this sort of "oh she's excited for this, let's all point and laugh when it goes poorly for her" moment from the Wildcats when her big number gets ruined by Rocketman(?) where they seem like the real antagonists of the movie imo.
you didn't ask but I HAD to get all that out 😅

I will say that in the second movie she absolutely abused her power as the daughter of Troy’s employer to get him to do whatever she wanted. He might not have felt okay to say no because there was so much pressure about college and here she was dangling these amazing opportunities over him. It was also terrible of his friends and Gabriella to hold him having nice things against him when he literally got them all jobs, but no, that wasn’t enough for them. I understand being upset that someone is acting differently towards you but they seemed to completely lack any empathy towards him the entire movie. I realize that they were all high school aged characters though so having that level of emotional maturity might be asking a lot.

Going after another girl’s boyfriend, removing your own BROTHER from the number that you both worked on to sing with a guy who doesn’t like you, using your privilege to get everyone fired like I was so happy when Gabriella said “What’s the prize? one of the reason I think she was a victim, is because she wasn't only a victim of other characters, she was also a victim of the writers. I mean, Sharpay's fabulous adventure movie was so insulting... I mean, the plot of this movie is to make her think she's less of a star than her dog, and to make her compete against a little kid. This is so humiliating and kind of misogynist. I was expecting so much more, like she could have had to choose between an important broadway show, or a smaller show created by her brother, and she would choose to support her brother at the end. Or, she could have grow older and have an accident stoping her at the moment her career is on top and she would be like "oh no what am I gonna do, the only thing I love is singing and dancing" and at the end she becomes the writer of a big musical. I mean, she deserved so much better than being compared to her dog... Anyway, if you agree with me on this, I think you'll like my song called Sharpay Evans deserved better. It's not everyday a song comes out to remind to Sharpay was an icon, so go listen to it

For HSM2 I don't have that much to talk, but it is a weird movie. Sharpay is a villain for sure, no doubt about it. The bigger issue IMO is how Troy's friends treat him. Sure, he doesn't have time for them, but can you really blame him? He has the chance to maybe get a shot at a very good college membership and hang out with professional basketball players. If someone ditched that opportunity to hang out with me I'd bash them in the head for being an idiot. Sure, if they're not happy there they can leave, like Gabriela did, but don't put the blame on Troy, he's just looking after his future. They can catch up and play baseball, or whatever, later.

I figured the point of asking for a more stripped down song is because the musical is a romance. So it doesnt matter if the uptempo is better if it doesnt fit the tone of the moment. Also, the Romeo annd Juliet thing wasnt an incest joke. They both always go for the leads. So if the show was Romeo and Juliet, they would both audition for those roles
Also, I dunno, I'm not a huge fan of people forcing changes on writers. If the show was made to be sweet and soft, Sharpay coming in and telling her that they would do it her was is just rude.

The thing that bugs me about people who go "Sharpay is the victim" is that they often go on about how she should get every single lead role because she wants it and works hard for it and is the most passionate. And, I'm not going to argue that she doesn't work hard or is underserving of a lead role, but like, what part of the professional theater world do you think Sharpay is gonna last long with if she has a melt down every time she fails to get a lead role in a Broadway show? Also you don't bully the composer, you're shooting yourself in the foot if you make yourself a nightmare for composers to work with. It's probably a good thing Sharpay missed out on some theater roles in high school so she had experience with let downs and didn't end up on a 7 o'clock news story for murdering her co-star the first time she doesn't get the lead in a professional production.
Though I still very much love love love Sharpay. Also agreed she's not really an antagonist in the third movie at all, and got the short end of the stick there.

I didn't want to see her crash and burn because she's a villain, but after the way she treated Kelsey and Ryan, I'm glad those two unsung (no pun intended) heroes got the Juliard scholarship over her. It's nice that the two super-talented, dedicated theater aficionados who were always forced to play, as it were, second fiddle to Sharpay Evans finally got some recognition and appreciation outside of their friend group at East High. Also, if you want to find the true villain, I think you need to add a basketball and a Y-chromosome. I'm lookin' at you, lunkhead basketball boy! Yes, what Taylor and Chad pulled in the first movie was super-cruel, but they didn't torture Troy to get him to say those things. He said it all of his own volition. And in a high school, *of course* it would get back to Gabriella what he said about her, no live stream required. Taylor and Chad may have set him up, but he took it too far when he so readily disowned Gabriella. That was beyond uncalled for. Dump the Twinkletown Musicale, fine, but don't dump your girlfriend unless you have the gonads to tell her to her face. Gabriella proved her astounding maturity, comparatively, in the second film by walking away from Troy, but telling him to his face that she was done with the games, as well as handling Sharpay with honesty and tact. If Troy is the prize she wants so badly, she can have him. Gabriella's done playing these stupid games. Just stop making the other Wildcats miserable. She's walking away anyway.

10:10 I went to a really well funded hugh school. Our theater program was award winning, but it was heavily self funded as were many of the programs so there was definitely an animosity between different things because while the football team could self fund a lot they got a massive new field despite losing every game for 35 years. The marching band won the state championship and lost funding and had to reduce the number of buses we got to transport the band to games. The theater program one year had to put on a Christmas Carol (in the public domain) because they didn't have the funds for any other shows, but our 35 year losing football team got that freaking stadium. It's been nearly 20 years and I'm still mad.

She was a villain. She was always trying to sabotage anybody she could to get what she wanted. As much as we can sympathize with her she still did those things. People can say it's because troy and gabriella were newcomers and just took everything she worked hard for, but her brother also worked hard and she didn't hesitate to throw him under the bus.
Even in the song 'I want it all', she said, "they're gonna love me" and Ryan had to correct her. It showed who she truly was for.
I feel the only way she wouldn't be a villain is if she stopped sabotaging people. Funny enough, her doing sabotaging people always led to her own downfall. Especially in HSM3 when she could've gotten a whole performance to herself.

No lie, in highschool I wrote a play that was basically a Monty Python skit, complete with a narrator that was trapped in a tower that just magically appeared in every scene.
Basically there was a knight who went to slay a dragon but the dragon was like, hella depressed and the knight felt bad slaying an enemy that wouldn't fight back so his entire adventure was trying to make this dragon want to live long enough to fight it. All while narrator was being snarky and overly critical of what the knight was doing. So they'd occasionally get into shouting matches in the middle of doing things.

I like how everyone is feeling sorry for the rich entitled conventionally good looking girl now. Maybe it’s because the 2000s was against everything hyper feminine and now we’re embracing it. But I find it laughable that she’s now the most ‘relatable’ character. Apart from some of her feelings, nothing else about her is relatable to majority of the general population

    1. Zeke’s teammates telling him to stick to basketball was not a racially motivated thing. It was more of a gender stereotype, because baking is seen as feminine while playing sports is associated with masculinity and they wouldn’t have expected him to like something so “dainty” or “soft”.
    2. Hip-hop/popping and locking have nothing to with being black and aren’t exclusive to black people. It is a universal form of expression used around the world. You’re own prejudice is showing here.
