Bloating is a very common and uncomfortable condition where your belly increases in size, often occurring after eating and increasing as the day goes on. Twenty to thirty percent of the population regularly experiences bloating. If you have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, that percentage jumps to 96%. Bloating is a sign of an imbalance in the gut, often caused by dysbiosis, food intolerances, bacterial overgrowth, and stress. While conventional medicine usually treats the symptoms of bloating, Functional Medicine treats the entire ecosystem of the body, including repairing and rebuilding the gut.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses bloating and “food babies” with Dr. Elizabeth Boham. They talk about lactose intolerance as a common cause of bloating and how this uncomfortable condition can be successfully treated. They also share a case study of a 35-year-old man and the protocol that helped him.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

My experience with dieticians is that they are still stuck on the old 1950s and 1960s low fat, low salt, and "healthy whole grains" diets that have helped get us to our present conditions of I'll health.

I'm curious, what is the functional medicine community doing to advocate that mainstream doctors learn this stuff, and that insurance companies need to pay for this, particularly nutritionists? I was working with a medical group who assured me that the nutritionist would be covered by my insurance, and when it wasn't covered, wanted to charge me $500 for my hour with the nutritionist, which sadly wasn't even helpful.

Hi! I went to see a gastroenterologist and I couldn't have been more disappointed. Without even asking me a question and showing to be annoyed by my questions, he just gave me a sheet with the mapfood diet, he told me I had IBS, to follow that diet and to go back to see him in a year! Nonsense. I haven't watched your video yet, I will comment later.

I thought this would be abt using ALL natural ingredients for healing, instead this female Dr still recommends Rx meds. I don't feel this goes along with the Dr's FARMacy program. We are trying to get away from all the chemical meds etc, not being told they still need to be given.

I thought I had SIBO or irritable bowel syndrome. I was slowly losing weight and feeling fatigued. What I finally did was I took a different type of probiotic and took pancreatic enzymes. It took care most of the symptoms almost instantaneously.

These talks can be very frustrating to listen to which sounds very technical when it comes to eating a healthy diet. 1 most of us could use education to make delicious food at affordable prices, instead of giving us a explanation of what is wrong with our diets. So I get the Whole Foods concept however maybe a certain amount of base cooking that has a nutritional value for certain issues like leaky gut. It all sounds good but there is no meat to hold on too!

Most of these videos just tell you that you need to find a functional medicine doctor. There isn't enough in there to really be actionable in almost any of these videos. It pretty annoying.

Thank you. My dad had me get him a couple of frozen meals and canned soup. His legs got very, very swollen. The Dr thought he had congestive heart failure. I had seen your UA-cam a few years and and figured out my dad had a reaction to the new foods he tried. He was almost 80 years old at the time and never really had a frozen meal. We realized he couldn't have too much sodium. He never had Sodas much or Alchohol. I think a lot of people are having way too much sodium and don't even realize it.

I'm so thankful I found you a few years ago Dr. Harmon. You have helped me and my family. I share with people who are willing to listen. I give them your information and share my experience. I didn't know what was happening to me about 8 years ago. I started getting sick eating any chicken, then any meats. I started a vegetarian lifestyle and felt better. Then I started getting sick eating anywhere and I knew I wasn't pregnant since my hubby had went to Heaven. I couldn't believe what was happening. Even some smells will get my sick. I also found out msg is in a lot of products and I have know for years that it make me sick I just didn't know it was in a lot of products. I don't drink Alcohol at all either. I make my own almond milk and coconut milk too. I feel so much better it just keeps me learning more and making any changes I need to because I know I will feel even better by doing so. Once you get to that amazing healthy energetic feeling there's No going back and it just makes you want more healthy goodness. Blessings to all of you and your families. Thank you. Thank you.

The number one rule when posting info for people that are having problems: Don’t put negative thoughts in their head, such as, “Maybe you have cancer.” Just stick with how to treat symptoms only, because only doctors who physically screen patients will know more definitively if something is wrong.

I was on antibiotics for acne for many years in my adolescent and young adult life, I know now it coulda created havoc. Wow I never thought that taking my probiotic could be making the problem worse! I take a gummy multi and a pro and prebiotic both from Olly often on a coffee only stomach. I also didn’t realize gum or stevia causing belly pain and bloating - what about Stevia? Could that be it? Today even before eating or drinking I had issues. And maybe other medications causing bloating, nausea, belly pain?

A functional Dr? I already have a doctor (thank God her husband is trying out KETO - hope he has success). We have a couple of outfits here NYC area that 'do' functional medicine. They don't take insurance except for one kind (not original medicare I have excellent supplemental. One of these practices is called Parsley and I forget the others I looked up. Basically you pay a monthly subscription up in the hundreds, then they sell you their own brand of supplements. Yes, they do all the tests needed such as insulin levels, deficiencies and pinpoint where your problems lie, but you have to pay for those tests! Best thing to do is learn as much as you can but three major points ..... stop snacking, eat no more than three times a day, preferable twice and stop eating after dinner. Try to go as long as possible before a high protein, quality breakfast (meal 1). in other words, experiment. Also, be aware of any 'advice' here on UA-cam where they happen to be selling something.
