Nice video Jim ! I love your add-a- room and I am definitely getting one (or at least a screen room) for me next season. I am glad you also got a Mr Buddy Heater. I can’t camp in the fall or winter without it. Thanks for sharing your journey in NL. Cheers, Eddie
Thanks Eddie, the add-a-room certainly makes it easier to store stuff out of the weather. I do need to get back to work on my new one with a better door and a couple of windows. Not sure how my old sewing machine will hold out on the tent fabric. The Little Buddy is essential this time of the year. I also had electric heat at the Deadman's Cove Campground. Quite comfortable. Hope to get out for one last run for coffee before putting the bike away.
My first GPS for the bike was a TomTom Rider and found that it would always overstate the estimated time of arrival. This was one of the reasons I switch to a Garmin. . Glad to see you made it before dark. looking forward to part 3. cheers Dave
I've always taken what the GPS tells me with a grain of salt... some human originally entered the data the GPS uses and we all know how ofter humans make mistakes lol.
I still use the old method to check on the modern stuff and they usually are pretty good but sometime they are way out in left field for reason unknown, however this was a cool ride and many thanks for sharing . glad to hear things stay toasty in the add a room . Looking forward to the next Video
I know my way around the island fairly well although this was a new area. I do use paper maps to get my first idea of distance, then rough plot out in Google maps. The GPS has always been best in a new city. Thanks for coming along.
Red faced I must admit that sometimes I forget to turn on the camera and or forget to plug it into the power pack unit. Take care and thanks for all the fun videos.
That's a long haul but Newfoundland is a unique destination. It surprises me in good ways every year. Get in touch if you want some advice riding the island. Try to have 2 weeks set aside for just here on the island. I'm planning a big trip in 2023 that will include Arizona.
Well done. I enjoyed your video. I have crossed the island many times but never had a reason to turn off and visit that area. It may be on my to do, list. Stay safe.
Jim if you come down the Blue Ridge next year check out the Motorcycle only Campgrounds, But just a note the Blueridge Motorcycle campgrounds near Pisgah Mtn was washed out by a flood this yr and probably not going to be open stay safe
I heard about that... hope they do rebuild but it does not sound promising. I've been making notes of a number of the MC only campgrounds. Need to spend at least a week to 10 days exploring roads. Last time I was only in the area for 2 days.
So good to see you where you belong Jim, out riding and camping 😊😁👍 I too was able to get one last camping weekend accomplished in late October, and it was special, it was vistiting family for the first time since pre-Covid, in Kitchener Ontario. The border crossing was a story in itself, 2.5 hrs with the unlucky "randomly selected" for a 2nd Covid test. I had to chuckle watching the time lapse footage, I know I'll end up doing that at some point myself. I hope my GPS doesn't do the opposite of yours when I travel in Canada, I'd rather do an "8 hr" ride in 5 hrs than the other way round. I enjoyed the ride and scenery in this video, but you ate that steak pretty dang fast 😳🤣🥴
If I had left that camera running all night I only would have gotten 10 min. sleep! That GPS has been constaintly close to actually riding times except this one road... glitch in the matrix. Glad you got out too... hoping the borders and all our lives get back to a little more normal by next summer.
Love your time-lapse riding seen from the trailer. No-one in the camp site? Wonder if people are just getting ready for winter? Kids are back to school and it is cooler.
They were closing down at the end of that week. I probably was their last camper. Small campground, I think 10 tent sites and 6 RV sites with electricity and water. Nice washroom with plenty of hot water. Everyone is getting ready for winter.
Got it from Banggood... they sell it as a ground sheet for picnics. Relective on both sides and a thin insulating foam inbetween. Works well on the bed and I'm going to use some for a picture window insulation this winter. Relatively cheap.
@@OldGuyonaBike I this for the van windows, never thought of using it as a base for bedding, I like it. It's good to see you got some trips done this year, it's been another weird year for travel.
speaking of bourbon, have you tried Uncle Nearest? The story goes that Uncle Nearest is who taught Jack Daniels how to distill. It's available in a few places down here and quite smooth. No aged stock since it's a recently rejuvenated brand. Also, what 12VDC blanket did you end up with?
Have not seen Uncle Nearest up here. Will have to keep an eye out for it. I bought the blanket on Amazon... there were several in the $30-40 range. It draws 45 watts on high and is self regulated to turn off in 45 min.. I've only used it on low. Just right. On 15 min. before getting into bed to warm it up and I think I turned it on once in the middle of the night and then as I was waking. My batteries held up fine. Having the little 250 watt electric heater helped as well. Very comfortable nights down in Harbour Breton.
I've heard the expression many times in motorcycling: "you can ride a road in and ride the same rode out and it is two different rides." It is true, of course, but nowhere in North America truer than in Newfoundland.
I use Google maps much more in pre-ride. I had a pretty good idea that my distance was right and was sure I could do that last leg in 2 and a half hours. This GPS has been pretty good and I'm sure it was just wrong data for this stretch of road. It was just so far off that I really noticed.
I think we'll have this whole Covid thing under better control by next spring but I'm already committed to a project here on the island May/June of next year, then leading a group of riders for a couple of weeks here at the end of July. I do have to be in Ontario for Labour Day weekend and may look at 2-3 weeks after that going back down to the Blue Ridge area in Sept. I did not spend enough time down there in 2018. So just a short ride into the States next year. I am starting to plan for a major 3-4 months on the road in 2023. I'll be doing some planning videos on that in the winter. I will hit the west coast and a lot of time in the southwest on that trip. What can I plan better to celebrate my 70th year?
Did the GPS adjust the destination time as you rode along? Mine does that. I’ve now changed that window to kms to destination instead of arrival time, and do the math in my head. Ya think they would let me string, the hammock between the swing sets? ;)
I think it tracked my time from Deer Lake to the turn off down the Connaigre quite well... I can't remember how fast it adjusted for that road. It was pretty well right on for my exploring around so I think there might just be a misentered speed linit for that road by itself. I really just use it as a guide. The campground in Harbour Breton is not on the route for Rolling RockSToc but might be part of the suggested 4 extra days on the way back from St. John's to the Port aux Basque ferry. There really is just so damned much to possibly see.
I really had a few great days out and in areas I had not seen before. I have a set of bar risers and there is a threaded hole dead centre that I was able to mount a RamBall point. I think I have a 3-4" stem on it to get it up above my tank bag and to where I can see it at a glance. I use the GPS as a reference and only count on it in urban settings. The voice turn by turn is great in the city.
I haven't found Google Maps too bad, they base it on posted speed limits and then slow you down a little. My GPS has not been too bad. This road was the first time it was way off. That's why I spent so much time talking about it. I don't take any of the electronics as gospel... still carry paper maps.
good video Jim beautiful scenery thanks for taking us along enjoyed watching you take care and have a wonderful weekend
Thanks Tom... cold rain and high winds here so a good day to do some editing and remember some roads.
As always enjoyed this ride also.
Cold but very beautiful scenery up in your neck of the woods. I really like the time-lapse video for the long stretch. Great idea! (Rob)
lol... I didn't mean to do the time lapse. It works but the scenery deserves a little more time being appreciated.
enjoyed the vid, thanks for sharing, on my bucket list for sure
A great area for riding... you'll get a better idea in the next couple of videos. I am definitely going to go back.
Great video wonderful scenery no urban sprawl!
We have sprawling scenery here.
Another great ride....I enjoy your treks!! Ride safe and have fun. I just put mine away for the winter. Take care my friend.
I'm hoping for one more coffee run... but the shed is ready for her winter hibernation.
Nice video Jim ! I love your add-a- room and I am definitely getting one (or at least a screen room) for me next season. I am glad you also got a Mr Buddy Heater. I can’t camp in the fall or winter without it. Thanks for sharing your journey in NL. Cheers, Eddie

Another great vid. Enjoyed the commentary as I followed along on my maps! Would love to ride that area when things get back to "normal".
I'm planning on getting down to the Harbour Breton area again in the real summer. Excellent riding. That's 2 videos from now.
Red faced I must admit that sometimes I forget to turn on the camera and or forget to plug it into the power pack unit. Take care and thanks for all the fun videos.
I think that's why I usually have 3 cameras running... at least one must be recording.
I hope to get to Newfoundland next summer from Phoenix, AZ. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Very nice - but don’t be in such a hurry Jim!
Hehehehe😅
I know, I know... always trying to do too much too fast. 5 times too fast.
Love your time-lapse riding seen from the trailer. No-one in the camp site? Wonder if people are just getting ready for winter? Kids are back to school and it is cooler.

Thanks for the ride!
Could you do a review of your kitchen table? I don’t remember you introducing us to it. Thanks!
I'll do a video over the winter on all my "accessories". The collapsable table/shelving is really helping organize the add-a-room.
Thank you for coming along.
It looked like Reflectix on you bed?
I believe that is correct. Seems to me he mentioned it in a previous video. It is a very common use for outdoor enthusiast's, it must work good.
Got it from Banggood... they sell it as a ground sheet for picnics. Relective on both sides and a thin insulating foam inbetween. Works well on the bed and I'm going to use some for a picture window insulation this winter. Relatively cheap.

Add a little weather into the mix and you can travel a road half a dozen times and never have the same ride.
Jim, did you give any thoughts to checking Google maps when you stopped for lunch to compare the ETA?
I use Google maps much more in pre-ride. I had a pretty good idea that my distance was right and was sure I could do that last leg in 2 and a half hours. This GPS has been pretty good and I'm sure it was just wrong data for this stretch of road. It was just so far off that I really noticed.
Now that the border is open will you be coming to the USA? If so where will you be going.

Besides the swings, there also was a covered common cooking area with support beams that could stand in for trees.
Great series...question, your GPS mount - what type is it and it looks like it is a stem mount?
I really had a few great days out and in areas I had not seen before. I have a set of bar risers and there is a threaded hole dead centre that I was able to mount a RamBall point. the time on google maps is always wrong .... i trust it but i trust a gps more .
