- Shifter rebuild kits for Mazda MX-5. Can a few bits of plastic and a couple of metal wave washers really make that big of a difference? It's rumoured they do, so we install one on the car with the sloppiest shifter in the fleet. Dan insisted his shift feel was fine, despite never having rebuilt the shifter himself.
Odds are, if you've not done a maintenance on the shifter, it would probably benefit from one. With no record of ever being rebuilt, Dan's Evolution Orange MX-5 was the perfect candidate for a full set of bushes, washers and gaskets from Mazda, Beatrush and Jass Performance.
Unable to resist an excuse to drive someone else's car, Leigh takes the MX-5 out for a rip to find out just how bad the shifter feels. Whilst winding through the local touge, a wild RX-7 FD appears. The chase is on through the country lanes and the missed shifts are racked up mercilessly until it's time to bring the MX-5 back to HQ.
However, rebuilding a shifter isn't only about improving the shift feel. The two rubber gaskets that keep all the oil in the shift turret and smells out of the cabin regularly deteriorate. Exhaust fumes aren't our favourite car scent, and when we dig into Dan's interior we find out if his are still in serviceable condition.

This was one of the first mods I did to my NA8. It made a world of difference and I highly recommend it as well.
Great video, clear to follow. Ive just done mine. Although I used an OEM nylon bottom bush rather than a bronze one. Good tip to lubricate the shifter, a little dab of silicone sealant did the trick. I also used Redline Shockproof oil for the turret.

I just did the rebuild kit in my 04 Miata. There was nothing left of the original poly center bushing when I took it apart. I used a brass bushing as well. It's just soo tight and perfect now!

Just did the bofi clutch kit with a lightweight flywheel and rebuilt my shifter while we were their, new oil and rear main seal aswell. What a difference! Although I've developed an awful decel rattle I need to look into since 😅
Have you fixed it? This is most probally the PPF not being in alignment

Almost identical to what I did recently, have replaced it previously with oem stuff but added the beatrush bush, jass upper and a 90mm tomei knob, its a proper shift now. Also new insulation helps as the heater is good enough without the transmission adding more heat and I have no ac 😂.
