Fitting a Short Shifter To a Mk1 Mazda MX-5: Is It ACTUALLY Worth It???
Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. Once more, I'm joined by 'Monique' my Mk1 Mazda MX-5. In this video I'm fitting a short shifter, as well as giving you my first impressions as to be honest, I've always been a bit sceptical as to whether a short shifter is actually worth it for an MX-5.
The reason being is that the standard change is very good in its own right, so surely a short shift isn't going to add that much extra pleasure? Well, that's what this video is going to find out. There are a fair few short shifters available, some of which are more expensive than others of course.

Actually after cleaning out my top turret & replacing oil with Molyslip Gearbox oil additive & correct oil then fitting a new short shifter and new adaption kit..the gear change is far better & softer than before.
I also changed the oil in the gearbox & refilled with Molyslip Gearbox oil & The correct oil for this make. Then finally I did an oil change in the rear differential again Molyslip Gearbox oil and remainder oil. All done and the car changes gear smoothly, gearbox quieter and all feels good. Oh yes I use Molyslip Engine oil additive in my engine oil too.

Scared me when the additional "hands" appeared lol. Short shift does what it says on the tin. It's a bit more mechanical in feel. No necessarily an improvement over standard, sometimes just replacing all the old bits of the standard gearshift will be a nice improvement

any idea why my one doesnt slot into the hole in the turret at all? (car is in neutral and i can easily refit the old shifter)
