I am on my third NC700X MT, but also have in my garage a NC750XD (DCT), been riding for more than 30 years and I love riding these NC X bikes.

@@aks13v35 For my the NC700x MT is more like a tool, not as refined as the NC750X, I love DCT, I currently have 2 Africa twins in my garage as well, I cannot simply choose one over the other one, honestly the DCT feels like it has more torque and better power delivery, it adapts on how you ride it, specially on Sport mode, the same can be said about the NC750X. DCT or MT I could recommend either or. Thanks.

Very good review. I bought the 2012 nc700x a couple of months ago. I'm more of the guy who makes grocery store runs and cruises on back roads(paved) enjoying the scenery. Not an Adv guy but still really enjoyed this.

great Review, nice to see how it's well appreciated on the other side of the world :) I have the 2016 model (rc90) with DCT and just this year I realized how much I like it when I thought about getting the NT1100 as a replacement - I decided to keep the NC for a while longer. ;) it's just such an agile and fun to drive motorcycle.

Wow - As a digial nomad & part-time van lifer, this is why i love my Honda NC700 ✨️ This is my next bike for sure. I've had the DCT, now it'd time for the real thing!
Thanks for watching. The only issue with this idea is how you'd transport it in the back of the van. It's too heavy for most hitch carriers, and for most tongue weight limits.

I am a senior rider at 63 and not looking for a speedster instead a comfortable reliable easy to ride bike that will give nothing but enjoyment. Thank you.
Wonderful. Glad it helped, that's exactly why I do these reviews. The DCT also has ABS and a few modes of riding that make the bike shoft sooner or later depending on how exciting one wants to ride, so I am sure you'll love it. Good luck and glad to have you here

Nice review. I have 2012 NC700 for 6 years as the only motorcycle. Also with Honda luggage. I must say that fully loaded for camping (one up) it is rather sluggish on pavement. For off road it needs belly pan and suspension upgrade for a pleasant experience and you need to really mind the gap not to perch it’s hanging belly on a ledge. Of course people traveled fully loaded on 250, it is all about the point of reference. I almost never took it off road fully loaded, rather leave everything in the camp but the tools and water in the frunk (front trunk). Frankly, frunk is addictive, it is hard to go back when you experience it’s convenience that why I still have it ;).
All valid points. Thanks for sharing - I agree about the frunk - it becomes desirable in every subsequent motorcycle, that is why I titled this as the most promising ADV platform. Well done your summing up has reinforced my recent decision to buy a 1,300 miles only 2018 DCT version because at age 71 with left thumb arthritis developing I had to go fully auto despite generally having manual bikes. I will not be using the bike off road as I have a Yamaha Serow 225 for that activity. I also own a Kawasaki Versys 300 X but the clutch on that is so light it almost feels broken! This bike is definitely an under appreciated bit of kit and I am looking forward to many miles of happy biking. Perhaps you should do a review on the DCT version because this will be of interest to riders in the upper age bracket and a few comments about what the gearbox offers older users may help with their purchase decision. Keep up the great work. PS I bought the blue one!

I just visited my Honda Dealer for some Parts and they had 2 used NC700 DCT bikes. They are very good looking bikes and kind of remind me of my VStrom. I think it would make a good first bike for my 28 year old son, but with a manual.
Yes it makes an excellent first bike that he won't outgrow too quickly. The automatic transmission gets high praise but I'm a bit old school in this regard and prefer to shift myself. Thanks for watching.

Conceptually perhaps, but it's not half a Jazz engine. Often quoted in forums, reputedly, a flippant comment from a Honda engineer in an early presentation has stuck. A few aspects - parts of the valve gear bear some resemblance, but comparing the two engines shows them to be rather different.

You really should try the DCT - I ride one and it is so much more comfortable! I'll never go for anything less. I admit, I am not nearly as hard riding as you are so that might make a difference.

The NC only referred to the low revving engine, the frunk and the tank under the seat had already been done by others such as Aprillia with the Mana 850.

Hi Rubio. Nice to see a familiar name here. How have you been? Hows life in Texas. All is well here, had a big health scare with my daughter the past few weeks but it turned out something simpler so feeling blessed overall. What else is new with you?
I went from a 2012 NC700X to a '16 F800GS. Thought id go off pavement more with that but I never did since i have a smaller dual sport anyways. The extra suspension travel also means more height, so in some ways the NC was easier for a novice off road. Skid plate protected its belly if you ran it over anything. If that engine didnt have a fuel cutoff at 6600 RPMs, i probably never would have sold it.
I REALLY wish Honda brought their Crossrunner over here. VFR800 engine in a NC like chassis. Would have been perfect for me!
Yes that bike seems like a golden combo. I live the vfr 800. I own the 1200 now. It miss my 800
With a 2013 NC700S with now 115.000 km and a 2014 NC750S with 38.000 km I have reached a pinnacle point of happiness after 40 years of riding all kinds of bikes.
It is nice to be mature enough to be able to enjoy a 50/ 55 hp bike without any concern what others think about a falsely so called 'beginner' bike.
In fact Honda created the 🥚 of Columbus of the motorcycle world with the invention of the NC bikes.

In all reality to me it feels rather insignificant. But in order to explain myself I need to refer a little on what I did to my bikes. One thing I never liked was that the gear ratio on the NC750S is just too long.
I have changed the sprockets on both bikes. The NC750S is stock 17/ 43 and I changed it to 16 /48 .
It certainly gives me more torque but of course I do loose top speed.
The NC700S is stock 16/ 43 and I changed it to 15/ 43.
For the lack of motorways where I live overtaking power between 70 km/ h and 120 km/ h is most important. The NC700S still goes up to about 175 km/h top speed (gps) and the NC750S about 170 km/h.
Both bikes have GPR slip on but both are still equipped with stock headers and catalytic converter.
I do ride a lot with my wife as a pillion, another reason why I put torque over speed.
As I said in real life the difference between the 700 and 750 given both are healthy motorcycle, under normal traffic conditions is insignificant imo.
I hope that gives you something to work with.

I predicted the platform would be used for a more capable adv bike and the transalp is it. My garage is always changing but I made a video of the more recent - take a look in the playlist titled dream garage.

Great review. What would be a great is an in depth comparison of the NC750X vs the CB500X maybe pre 2019 before the 19inch wheel. The NC is more expensive to buy and maybe not as frugal as the CBX not to mention the weight but it's much easier to work on the NC I reckon, hence lower maintenance cost. Lower revving engine may also mean longer lasting. What do you think?
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'm very curious about the 750 and I've test riden the 500 before but for my taste it was just underpowered. Not to mention that I am curious about the rally raid version of the 500x. You are correct that lower revving engines will tend to last longer. That is why race bikes only typically lasts a few tens of miles before a full engine rebuild or replacement. The constant high revving, the high temperatures, the fast-moving internals all take their toll. I enjoyed and liked your video. What do you think about the lifetime expectancy of the engine of a Honda CB 500 (F or X - doesn't matter) or a Honda VTR 250. I find them really great. Honda CB 500 revs at around 5000 rpm at the speed of 100 km/h and the VTR 250 revs at a bit below 7000 rpm at 100 km/h. Do you think these engines could last 250 000 to 300 000 km with proper maintenance performed always on time?
By the way I found your video very interesting. I also think that Honda NC 700 is underrated. Many people don't realize how efficient this bike is with its torque available since very low rpm. I own a Honda Blackbird and I understand that I don't need so much power nor torque. I would have chosen a Honda NC 700.

YEs - it is Honda OEM. And very useful.
Built an ADV one of these over a year ago, works well off road except for the wheels - the rims get beat to hell and start to leak - ended up running tubes in 'em. Apart from that no complaints.

Just picked up a 2013 yesterday with only 1400 miles....always stored inside. Plans in the future are a skid plate, engine guard, and foot pegs. I may go deeper with an ADV set-up with tires and better suspension. Was thinking of how a 19 inch wheel and possibly fork for a CB 500X would pair with this bike....possibly Rally raid add-ons?

All of those add ons sound very good for this bike - knobbies look pretty mean on it as well, and I haven't heard about which rally raid CB500 parts might work for the NC, but they make excellent ADV touring parts and would be curious to hear what your experience is building your NC that way. Totally true. And that BMW is probably air cooled?
How is the low fuel gauge? Does it over-react just below half tank and start stressing you or is it more accurate?
Its tricky cause you can do 70 miles before the first bar disappears. This however does not mean that you'll go another 70 before the second bar disappears. Thats the problem. You can't really relly on the gage for range.

I saw your KLR650 video and it was one of the videos that influenced me to buy a KLR last fall. I love the KLR but at my advancing age and more mellow back road riding style the KLR is not getting used to its full potential and I could use a bit more comfort. I saw a NC700x a few days ago and was intrigued. What would you say to a KLR rider considering a switch to the NC700/750?
Hello Rick, thanks for being here and for the support and question. You then strike me as a perfect candidate to make this switch since the NC is much easier to handle, simpler to maintain, smoother and more comfortable, and in all cases less aggressive. The KLR seat is notoriously uncomfortable. I think you will be presently surprised with the NC so long as you don't plan on any hard core off road adventures. Test ride one and you won't be disappointed, but I would be curious to hear your take on it. Cheers. Nik

@@Then00tz Yes, I did buy the bike and have put about 1800 miles on it. No regrets, it has more than met my expectations. I did make some changes to it. Depending on your physique the seat can make you feel like you are being pushed forward. I raised the front of the seat 18mm and it is perfect for me . I also converted the rear brake from foot operation to handlebar operation.. Having spent decades on bicycles, having the rear brake on the handlebar feels more natural to me.
@@rickkrough6167 How do you convert the rear brake to the handlebar rather than foot operation?
In regards to the suspension, would it be a good idea to change the forks and rear shock to make the bike taller, with more ground clearance, longer suspension travel? I was thinking something as Rally Raid did for the CB 500X.
I think that is the weakest link for this bike. Suspension upgrade would be great to see on the Nc line. Hopefully Honda decides to explore that with a special model cause i thinkthis bike provides a serious adv platform that is not yet tapped. Thanks for watching.

Hi, do you experience any rock damage to the radiator due to the front tyre fender being removed
I have not but the bike definitely prefer to be on the asphalt. And so the new transalp is out based on this bike if you plan on more adv touring.
hope someone comes out with windshield brackets to place the mirrors out front. have those on my Tmax; So nice and ez viewing.
I am not sure what that looks like - I don't think I have seen that setup.
I have to wonder if it would be possible to add a 19 or even a 21 inch rim and tire to the front...
I don't think it's a simple swap simply due to the fact that the motorcycle wasn't built to accommodate such clearances. It would make a big difference but also change the geometry and maybe potentially make the front lighter. That could be good or bad. But I do think it would be a great next or optional addition. The enemy of range is spirited riding. If you know you have a range challenge you have to ease up on the throttle and 225 miles range is very achievable.
That may be the case however for me personally, the enemy of AGE is spirited riding :)

Audio for voice is mono, playing only on the left speaker. I listen with one ear bud and couldn't figure out why no voice but music was good.

5, 6 dollars for a gallon. Our gallons are different, but it's about 1.20 a litre here. A UK gallon is 4.5 litres and a US gallon is, what 3.6? So in UK, looking at 10-15 a fill. For 200+ miles that's awesome. Empty to full is about £20.
Yeah, the gas mileage is phenomenal on this bike. Low RPM range and an efficient engine provides for a very efficient and economical machine. This is important to those who tour long distances because it ultimately saves a ton of cash.
I got to demo the 700x and the 750x dct. Don't care much about the dct, I've riden the AT with dct as well. I like engine braking. But for someone upgrading from a scooter will transition easily.
The NC and CB500X are great looking and great riding bikes.

I actually got to ride the cb500x, the rally raid and the full decked out adv model. Also the cb500f. Great little motor. All in the same year.
With some minor suspension work the xr650l is a work horse.
@@KLRmurdercycle What drew me away from the CB500 RR is that the DR400 or my current KTM SXC625 can do a lot more. I'd still prefer to tour on a Honda though for reliability. My XR is a beast and it's been a joy getting to know it. But nonetless the CB500 RRwould be a great bike to try.

I use museum putty on the battery terminals to keep the square nut in place

Hi, I have the same bike and I noticed when I take my hands off the handle bars they wobble, I see you had clips of it,,,what does this mean? Is it just a common thing on these bikes and nothing to worry about?
Hi. This is a problem youd need to resolve. It can mean either unballanced tires, warped wheels, or a loose head bearing. This assumes the bike has never been crashed. Do take car eof this cause its dangerous and will only get worse.

@@mktm1290 It actually might. Try installing them again - they are more to dull the vibration but maybe that is your culprit - it's the easiest place to start in any case.

I had the wobble just like that on my NC. I put the new front tire and it disappeared. The Avon I had on front still has some life left but it was worn unevenly (probably due to road profiles )
Lane splitting should be legal here in FL as well..some many riders year round....nice bike

Digging my 2012 NC700X for my 38mile roundtrip commute. 62-64mpg. It was somewhat of a just in case fuel gets really really bad option. Bad leaders and actors in the world lead to high prices.

I've no experience with the street version of the GS line that is kinda rare in the US. But I have reviewed all the otterstioms of.the 650 GS including the F, the G Sretao and the X challenge. So feel free to run through my playlist. The GS has more power and is more capable offroad.

Which is best for 2 up riding? Gs650, nc700x, vstrom650? And why?
I would say ut would probably be the vstrom sinpmy due to more power and torque, althougg the GS is not far behind in that regard. The Nc had the advantage of internal luggage and snootheness, as well as superior gas mileage with the extra weight. All three would do a fine job at it so its a bit of a difficult and subjective answer to make. What's going on with the revving at the transitions? Your voice only comes across the left channel, so when you do your rev thing, it blows out the right ear for anyone with headphones.
Sorry about that. That's the first time I hear about it. I edit and watch these on a desktop and never knew that was a problem till now. Jeez, that must be annoying. I must have had recording issues if only one side is on.
i see asia bikes are lower so the center stand ; "we hope"; is also adjusted; the ctx700 was the same and no one has the lower center stand.

I agree with you that it's a very competent do-it motorcycle but unfortunately very neglected by Honda Itself. Now Honda has there 750 adventure scooters with a DCT Transmission, spoked tubeless wheels, and a luggage compartment that can hold two adv style Helmets Plus they have panniers and top Boxes as accessories. Basically, you can do all the things that you do on the NC but somehow better on these. If I'm not mistaken they also share the same engine. the big defect that I see is they might have more stuff to be removed to get access to the engine, but knowing Honda they usually make this kinda of stuff easy for the consumer.

I read a comment from a guy on another video with one of these who said he got 100 miles to the gallon, is that even possible not being a scooter?
What is the fuel efficiency really like?
I don't think that's realistic. Go with the official number provided by the manufacturer, and cut it down by a few. 60 is more reasonable. 100 downhill all tank, maybe.
I managed 90mpg on a very leisurely ride which I could garden believe, I normally get mid to late 70's mpg with mixed highway and back roads. I think of it like riding a diesel car, enjoy the smooth ride. Nice review btw
do you get the sore nuts on a long ride ?
My but goes numb every long ride honestly. Unless it's on a gold wing. But overall the sergeant seat in this wasn't terrible.
Is it capable of doing long distance US tours e.g from east coast to west coast ? how it is on US highways ? Does it make you tired after e.g few hours of ride ? please share your experience
Yes absolutely it is. That's what it's made for. This trip down to Mexico and Baja peninsula was over 9 hours of riding in one day and the bike performed beautifully. It's great on gas as well and perfectly capable on highways. It's not a road mile crusher, you're not going to be racing anybody, but it does everything you needed to do.
I rode my 2018 DCT model 6400 miles on a road trip with ease. The two most important additions were a Corbin seat and a Puig touring windshield, plus a lot of other things but the seat was a necessity as was the windshield.
Caution: the chain slack is measured with the bike resting on the side stand. If you tighten the chain on the centerstand the measurement won’t be right.
It's a great motorcycle ✌️👌

Im 5.8 (173cm) and 180lb. This bike is perfect for shorter riders since the weight is carried low. Another bike to consider is the BMW G650GS or F650GS since they also have the gas tank under the seat and sit at about 31 inches. I reviewed both so take a look. Thanks for the question and support.

I am 6’-5” 260lbs would this bike fit me? I am looking to get my first motorcycle in a couple of weeks so any recommendations would be helpful.
I think you might feel a bit cramped and thr bike would feel underpowered although since it is your first motorcycle you wouldnt have anything to compare it to. Only way to know is to go sit on one. I wouldn't buy it before taking ot for a ride. Don't feel intimidated by it. If you plan to do lots pf offroading then a tall bike would be the Honda XR650L. Seat height is always higher on more dirt oriented bikes due to their ground clearence. This NC might have too soft of a suspension for a rider your size. See bikes where you can manually stiffen up the rear shock since most bikes were not produced woth a rider your size in mind. Good luck.
This would-be the best bike if it was shaft drive ….i have the dct version. 30/34km per liter is easily to get. Grip heating is on my list!!
Shaft drive would add a lot of cash to the price, plus a good amount of weight. For bikes like these that don't have a ton of torque the chain and sprockets tend to last. Heated grips though are a great investment. I was using my heated gloves just last night, filming the review of the new KLR Kawasaki gave me, but my hands were still cold cause it doesn't have heated grips. Would you say the 2021 version is less ADV orientated?
What makes you ask? I am not aware of any drastic changes to the platform that make it more or less adv oriented. I find the new bike very handsome although the newer tail light design removes the ability to store something directly on top of it.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I'm looking at one as an option at the moment and I see that the seat height has been lowered and suspension has less travel front and back. My guess is that it would still be OK with light off-road? I like the idea of having the option of heading off the tarmac if needed, like on a light dirt track, nothing serious. Seems such a great all-rounder, plus the deal we currently have in the UK is not to be sniffed at.

would this engine probably "last forever" because of the low compression ratio?
I have a 2012 NC 700X now has over 40,000 miles on it, very dependable just do regular maintenance and it should last a very long time. One point I did not hear Nik mention is it is fuel injected so none of the typical problems found with a carburetor. The motor seems to work effortlessly.

Considering it does not rev as high as standard motorcycles, considering that the engine is half of a Honda fit car engine, and considering it's a honda, with proper maintenance there's no reason why this motorcycle wouldn't run over a hundred thousand miles without any major service requirements. Two Pistons are always easier for overall life expectancy of the motor than one big dumper. The motorcycle is just very tame and that all affects longevity. Thanks for watching. You will have no use at all being fully flat fotted. I'm 5.8 and have no problems with this.

@@aks13v35 i always prefer the clutch. I feel it's a more rewarding ride. Even in cars one seems to have more control. Clutch less riding seems to be alienating. I like gears and shifting myself, but, that said, the DCT system in Hondas has gotten great reviews. It's just a matter of preference honestly.
I totaled my Africa Twin... I never had a motorcycle and my first bike they told me to get a Africa Twin 1100cc because I don't have to shift so I took there advice and bought it. 3 weeks later I whiskey throttled in a parking lot.. did 11k worth of dmg to my bike somehow...
Long story short my father-in law which has decades experience riding said it was bad to start on a 1100cc and said the dealership was very awful recommending such a large bike for me.
Im a big guy and I HATE cruisers they sit way to low for me, I feel squished on it so I needed something that sits upright. The new dealership i deiced to go to recommended this bike. WAY MORE FRIENDLY to learn on. So much lighter.
Yup - that was not a great recommendation on the dealer's part. It's one heck of a bike to start on. This NC also has the DCT transmission as I am sure you are aware. And yes, it's about 40 pounds lighter, but the weight distribution makes it feel even lighter than that. You might get bored of the lack of power since you mention you are a big guy, but it's always easy to sell when the time comes. Let me know if you'd like other suggestions when its time to upgrade. I just purchased a barely used 2015 model as my first bike. To be honest I didn't do as much research as I might have before getting it but your review enforced my understanding of what attracted me in the first place. The previous owner put a lot of money into modifying it for ADV touring, with a legit metal skid plate, a radiator gravel guard, engine bars, soft bag racks, LED sponson lights, a center stand, a pillion mount, an adjustable windscreen, black widow exhaust and better foot pegs. What would you guys recommend if I wanted to improve it further? It will be a pavement bike for a while till I get my skills up and take an ADV riding class, the only obvious weakness I see is the suspension. I have no plans to take it out on worse than some narly dirt roads so do you think I'd be fine keeping the front end stock? I saved so much on mods that I'm up for any suggestions.

I can't comment on that build, but yes, the suspension would be the next upgrade - there are usually dedicated suspension mechanics in most major cities who can really do magic. @@pegasusmotorcycletours it was a good review btw. I listened to it mostly while working yesterday. Yeah I have own 3 bikes from Ninja 250 , Honda 919 and Concours14. I know this will be much slower but as long as it doesn’t feel like the ninja 250 I should be fine. I wasn’t planning on riding again this soon as I still have young kids but with the piss poor leadership passing the buck we are in for some stupid fuel prices so I am taking a preemptive step in case fuel efficient vehicles get scarce.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Just got back from an 3 hour plus trip to buy one and the low resolution pictures were quite deceiving. Rust, corrosion and a orange rusty chain = wasted 3hrs.
its heavier than a Fireblade , with a smaller back tyre than a blade, so it eats back tyres a lot faster than i liked

I honestly never talk about the tires in my reviews, or rarely ever, cause again, they are such a subjective and easily replacable item, evenryone has a different opinion and stock tires usually suck and are the forst thing to be changed. But if you do like the knobbies, they are the TKC80s by continental. The other option is the Heidenau k60.

A mention of what more off-road-capable tires you chose is perfectly in line with a review like this. You are telling us how you set up your bike for doing what you do. I have wanted a dual sport (have a Honda NT700V/Deauville touring bike), have always lusted after a dual-sport, and haven’t considered anything with a 17-inch front tire. So I am intrigued by folks that use bikes like the NC700X for ‘real’ adventuring. Same with the guy who produces Mototrek: for many years he used a first-generation Versys (with the goofy stacked headlights, no ABS, and 17” front wheel) to video Bret Tkacs all over the place. Given that I really want something that is only gravel-road capable, and maybe a little slow 2-tracking, I’m curious in how people adapt a 17” wheeled bike for that. And a big component of that is tires. Is it really possible to use a 17” tire in, say, sand? Like sandy wash-outs, not for hitting the dunes. We have a lot of sand here in Michigan. I’m not asking for a personal response here, just explaining what some in the audience are thinking......
Thanks so much for taking the time I'm to write this out period now I understand you better and your or expectation makes perfect sense period I definitely could have spent a few minutes talking about my tyres especially considering I got a flat on this trip and had to repair it along the way to make it back. It would have been interesting few minutes to add to this video so your point is well taken and I think from now on I definitely will not neglect to include a tyre review period. The old saying that any motorcycle can be an adv bike still Rings true to certain extent but it definitely helps to have bigger tires of front, needless to say. That said I've had some amazing Adventures on my v-strom as well which has very similar specs / geometry. The heidenaus are the most reliable tures for this sort of stuff, but for sand definitely look into the tkc.s Also, Shinko makes the 805/804 which also look fantastic. I too am from Michigan and have ridden throu UP and the dunes uo there. Quite dramatic scenery. Has anyone from Honda confirmed that it is half of Honda Jazz/Fit engine or is it just a speculation?
It's a complete myth. The 4 cylinder engine they are talking about is a 1.3 liter L13A. It does have the same size bore/stroke and compression ratio. The block, cylinder head, pistons, rods, and valves are completely different. None of the part numbers cross reference and just from pictures it's clear the engines have nothing in common other than being designed for economy by Honda around the same time period for the same grade of fuel.
Buy a Honda nc700x/nc750x key from Aliexpress
Take it to the locksmith to make aduplicate
Put it in a waterproof bag and ducktape it in a secret place on your bike

The price point is at least 5 grand higher for the T7. It's a much more capable bike on virtually every respect. Taller and more intense as well. Harder to locate at the moment.
