Love Goo Goo Dolls! This is my all-time favorite of theirs...Thanks a ton! You guys nailed it. The slow haunting bass combined with the melodic strumming guitar, Amber as you pointed out so well, along with his voice, all just fits perfectly together.

This is the song that put the band on the map. From 1995's "A Boy Named Goo" album. "Slide" and "Iris" are from 1998's "Dizzy Up the Girl" -- which also includes "Black Balloon" that is mentioned in the comments a few times (and rightly so). Rumored to be about a relationship John Rezeznick had with MTV VJ (and now Fox Business personality) Kennedy.
I believe that Kennedy has at least tacitly acknowledged the relationship.
As this was the song that truly broke the band after many years and previous records....
The entire song complete verse and chorus may not be about just her.... it is easy to see why a struggling but indie rock darling and an MTV VJ may have not wanted the masses knowing about them.
    Very telling line
You can hide beside me, maybe for a while. And I won't tell 'em your name.
Really sums that really great relationship we have all had, but you also deep down know from the start that you won't end up together... But you push forward whatever time you have is worth the pain at the end.

Goo Goo Dolls had a TON of hits, but to me their best song was "It's Over" which was never released on the radio, so a lot of people don't know about it. The absolutely sick bass drops layered in with the driving guitar during the chorus bring so much intensity. Add in the escalated auditory posture of the bridge and you just have a masterpiece.

I love this song, please do Black Balloon by them! & also please give Taylor Swift a try. Don't come at me sideways, I'm entitled to my opinions... but she has the most beautiful songs, Wildest Dreams, All too Well, New Years Day and Endgame, I think you'll love. Just want to see if we can branch out, to her pop genre! And I think, that would be a good start and maybe you've done one and I don't remember 🤷‍♀️ but you won't be sorry. Love Goo Goo Dolls! Reminds me of my Vertical Horizon( Best I've ever had, and You're a God)/Nickelback love! For Nickelback, Lullaby is beautiful and you will cry. And I'm about to listen to, " If today was your last day!" This is alternative rock gold to me, and The Fray. Can you tell I love music! Lol!

The Goo Goo Dolls' vibe always reminds me of Five For Fighting who came later. The song "100 Years" hits harder as time goes by.

You should check out the song Black Balloon next. It was another hit on the same album as Iris and Slide. John Rzeznik is the lead singer and songwriter. One of the best song writers of all time, he’s been recognized by the songwriting hall of fame. Name was their first big hit, on the album before Iris and Slide

Just recently saw these guys live. They always put on a great show - "Long Way Down", "Black Balloon". This is a great tune! John Reznik wrote this about his childhood. His parents died when he was young and his sisters raised him - ""We're grown up orphans who never knew their names" reflects his past. His dad was an alcoholic and part of the song describes his moment of flirtation with an MTV VJ Kennedy where they shared a kiss and had romantic phone calls even though he was married at the time. Kennedy didn't want anyone to know her real name - "I won't tell no one your name" is inspired by that. time.

I've never been much into religious beliefs, but this song to me represents him talking to someone close to him who had passed thst he wishes for their return, and he wouldn't tell God their name.
