      PS: I think that any kind of singing can either damage your vocal cords or not, depending on how you do it. That said, I don't like the death core sounds. To me, that's not singing, it's not musical. We live in a day where people are auto tuning everything. They're even going back into classic music that wasn't auto tuned and auto tuning it. We're signing way too much of the art of the past and we're bringing in some thing that before long you won't even need people to do. Personal choice but I miss the days when metal singers tried to incorporate as much of what opera singers learn as they could. That said, I respect what you're trying to do here and why you're trying to do it.

    INXS were part of that strange brew of Pop bands that were actually quite popular amongst Rock Fans. They had the swagger, the boldness. Michael Hutchence was a role model for coolness back then. Michael Hutchence has to have been a lab experiment where they fused Mick Jagger's and Jim Morrison's DNA. He was a very unique performer. May he rest in peace.
    Also, the way this song runs right into the song "Mediate" in the album is a perfect example of why listening to albums in order in their entirety can be such a musical journey. You should definitely give the song a listen.

      I don't know man, they were getting out of their "prime" in the late 90's when we lost Michael. Even if Elegantly Wasted was a good album imo, I don't know if they could have reinvented themselves in the early 2000's to make music as relevant as they did in their early days. Anyway I don't mind, they are my fav top ten all time anyway, and even more today with the latest news.....ahhhhhhhhh, ahhhhhhhhh, better than Oasis!

      They're certainly in my personal top 10. Probably top 5. Their catalog is so diverse with tons of hits and lots more great songs that were never singles. Songs you can dance to. Songs that you can relax to. Songs you can rock to. Songs that make you think. Songs, like this one, that are just sexy as hell.

      Even before they broke through and had a bunch of top 40 hits, their earlier stuff was really good. Don't Change, The One Thing, Original Sin, etc. There are a bunch of non-singles I love too like Johnson's Aeroplane. They had a solid decade of really great work!!

    • @uriahheep6730
      @uriahheep6730 2 місяці тому +2

      @nachomagallanico I have to agree and disagree simultaneously. I don't think their best work was behind them or they were out of their prime per se, albums like Elegently Wasted and Welcome to Wherever you Are were incredible pieces of work that simply did not resonate with audiences at the time and sales fell off a cliff. I think Not Enough Time was one of the best pieces they ever produced but it was hitting the airwaves against Smells Like Teen Spirit, Alive, Killing in the Name, etc a huge movement away from the highly produced sounds of the 80s. It was similar to punk as a reaction to disco. Even though they were still producing at the top of their game they were lumped in with 80s pop fairly or not...

    • @fromchomleystreet
      @fromchomleystreet 2 місяці тому +1

      At the time of his death, Hutchence was just shy of 38 years old, and the band were an entire decade past their commercial peak. It’s possible, of course, that they could have had a resurgence had he lived, but it would have been very atypical of pop music careers, generally speaking, for them to do so. Very few acts get two bites at the cherry.
      When Noel Gallagher famously spoke, while accepting a Brit award presented by Hutchence in 1996, about “has-beens presenting awards to gonna-bes”, he was being a characteristically cheeky and disrespectful little prick. But he also wasn’t entirely wrong. By then, the moment really had past for bands like INXS, and the pop world had long since moved on to new shiny objects.

    Several years ago I was watching one of those trashy shows on Russian State channel. It had ads running every 15 minutes one which was the “Mystification: Michael Huntchence” documentary segments. I got intrigued and gave it a shot. I was blown away by his personality. I watched that documentary four or five times because I couldn’t get enough of his magnetism. Then I watched others and had been a fan for four years. I wish I knew of him sooner though. What an unreal artist, unbelievably charismatic person and quite an alluring man. I have watched many of his live performances and I still haven’t seen someone with such a stage presence. He is beyond glorious. I am still not over the fact that he died so young (I was five days shy of my 4th birthday). The artists nowadays glow only behind super high tech production and in recording studios with auto tune machines while failing on stage. He was the artist one most certainly needed to experience live. I will remember his legacy for as long as I live.

Michael Hutchence started out in a jacket, shirt, and black leather pants. By the halfway mark, he was bare-chested and literally rolling around on the floor of the stage and had every female in the crowd, including the seven I was with, in the palm of his hand. The combination of the music, his voice, and superb stage prescence was mesmerizing. That concert is easily one of the top 3 that I have ever experienced.

    Saw them live with my wife and her friend at small venue, where it was all GA. During this song, he comes off the stage and starts walking through the crowd. Shirt off, tight stretch pants, and was literally glistening with sweat. He walks right in front of us and I've never actually seen someone standing frozen in awe with mouths hanging open like the two of them. I agree. INXS has a lot of good songs with iconic guitar riffs. Need You Tonight is probably the most famous, but I personally think Devil Inside is a little catchier. It's very seldom that I hear a song the first time and can't get it out of my head. When I saw the video for Devil Inside for the first time on MTV back in the day, it stuck in my head for days. The guitar riff has hints of "Need You Tonight," but it's faster and more upbeat. Still one of my favorite songs.

    There is a story behind the song. Andrew was recording musical takes on tape, as the taxi pulls up to take him to Hong Kong to meet Michael. Andrew was working on that main guitar riff and had the taxi driver wait for 45 minutes while he worked out his stream of musical thought. He gets to Hong Kong and Michael asks, what does he have, and in five minutes he has written the lyrics and melodies. There are many recorded interviews about this song and other songs, but a good one to check out is the Professor of Rock on this platform, he has interviewed Andrew many times. Beware, there may be info and sound bites of songs you are not familiar with yet.

    Andy Farris put on a master class of music arrangement for the entire Kick album. There's a great story of how he was supposed to catch a flight to meet up with Michael and work on the album, and he was hit by inspiration for arranging "I Need You Tonight" so he had the taxi sit there racking up fees while he kept recording. When he finally got to Hong Kong (i think?), he gives the track to Michael who goes off to listen... 15 minutes later he comes back with the lyrics. lol
    I've always felt this song is the audio equivalent of going out to a club, young and wild, and the hottest person in there pulls you into a dark corner and starts whispering the kind of conversation that simultaneously makes you blush and lean in for more.
    If you happen to listen to Mediate, it's the next track on the album and you might want to look for a version that has the direct transition from the end of Need You Tonight right into the start of Mediate. Devil Inside is also a walk on the naughtier side of INXS. The One Thing, and Elegantly Wasted are similar.

    #2 song of the year 1988. It is one of my favorite 80's songs. Beautiful Girl song has gotten so good since he passed.

    "Sound squirrels" is definitely your best spontaneously created phase yet.

      ok the loogie thing was solid too. Something MJ about the music, but something much more Jim Morrison about Michael Hutchence, especially the way he moves, but also the way he accents words in surprising ways.

    The piece that this flows into, Mediate, is also great and extends the feeling wonderfully.

    @TheCharismaticVoice - take a look at INXS at Wembley Stadium in 1991 performing 'New Sensation' - easily one of the most incredible live renditions I have ever seen

    I've asked before, I'll ask again. I'd love to see you do the Australian band Silverchair and their song Emotion Sickness which features Australian pianist David Helfgott. Daniel Johns states "It's about fighting against the need to get some kind of medication and trying to pretend that you've got a normal state of mind when you know for a fact that you haven't."
    A very powerful song and a nice start down the rabbit hole of Silverchair
