Glad you're easing Jay into some more 90s music, Amber!! Goo Goo Dolls are a great 90s band, and I think you would love "Name", "Black Balloon", "Broadway", and "Here Is Gone". However, you have yet to do many awesome 90s bands, like Dave Matthews Band ("Ants Marching"), Toad the Wet Sprocket ("Walk on the Ocean"), Live ("Lightning Crashes"), Smash Mouth ("Walking On the Sun") or Toadies ("Possum Kingdom"). For Female Friday, you could do Garbage ("Stupid Girl"), Lush ("Sweetness and Light"), Tori Amos ("Caught a Lite Sneeze"). or The Sundays ("Goodbye").
I would also add Soul Asylum-Runaway Train, Gin Blossoms-Hey Jealousy, and a personal favorite, Poi Dog Pondering-Living With the Dreaming Body. Also if they do Tori Amos, I would start with Silent All These Years.
He's singing to a girlfriend who just got an abortion. The verse you referenced is "Don't you love the life you killed, the priest is on the phone, your father hit the wall, your ma disowned you, don't suppose I'll ever know what it means to be a man, or if it's all my fault" I cannot think of any other situation that could be solved with "Do you want to get married, or run away" as he sings in another line.
Amen. Great live performers. I saw them with Train a couple years ago. Awesome show on both counts. Pat Monahan can command a stage with the best of em.
I was obsessed to learn that song on guitar years ago. Such different tuning, and I broke a ton of strings trying to learn it. The lyrics and guitar outro to that song are amazing.
I am a huge fan of The Goo Goo dolls, since their first album. I love Johnny Rzeznik's voice, his lyrics, and for me it's one of the most underrated alternative bands of the 90s. NAME, HERE IS GONE, LONG WAY DOWN and NAKED, are songs worth listening to.
Absolutely my very fave song by the Goo Goo Dolls. It rocks but it's so jammed full of beautiful lyrics as well. I always get emotional when I hear it. Plus, my middle name is May, and that's the name of the girl in the song. The way Amber reacted and chair-danced to it is exactly how I get when I hear it. Thanks for doing this one, guys, and reminding me of it!
As a couple others have mentioned, do yourselves a favor and check out "Name". It is the song that put this band on the map. It is just a timeless song.
Absolutely one of the defining sounds of the 90's in my mind. Them, and so many others in this vein, Semisonic, Vertical Horizon, Duncan Sheik, Dishwalla, Gin Blossoms, Bowling for Soup, and many, many others. You couldn't turn on the radio back in the day without this or something like it coming on.
Name is absolutely the next song you need to do from Goo Goo Dolls. That's the first song that broke the band into the mainstream. They're from Buffalo NY, and came from the Punk scene. Though their most popular songs wouldn't lead you to that conclusion... If you want a great deep cut, Broadway is the go to for me. Should've been a single.
Goo Goo Dolls pumped out a bunch of hits in a short span. “Black Balloon” “Broadway’s Dark Tonight” are a couple solid choices outside of “Name” Nice work discovering these guys👌.
This is still one of my all time favorites. They were late 90's early 2000's, still making music. There's some great footage of them live in their hometown of Buffalo NY. It started to rain and the crowd stayed so the band stayed too.
I live in buffalo ny. The hometown of the goo goo dolls. They did a homecoming on july 4th many years ago that i had the pleasure of attending and being asked back stage. Well they did a full dvd of the show... It started raining HARD and their guitars started shorting out but we wrent going anywhere. Johnny said give us ten min and we will be back. The finished acoustic in the pouring rain. It was the best show ive been to too this date.
John is such an amazing songwriter and a truly witty man. A real artist. He and Robbie are the coolest; love them also because they are from Buffalo, just across the border from where I live in Canada. Love everything they do, especially Here is Gone, Sympathy. If you ever get a chance to see the live version of Iris in Buffalo, 4th of July, POURING RAIN...John and Robbie out there soaked, the crowd staying for the whole set. Love them!!!!
John was orphaned as a young teen and raised by his 4 older sisters; he and Robbie were roommates and besties forever. Robbie used to be the lead singer, but as John came to write more of the songs, they kind of switched.
Yep! Goo Goo Dolls is ‘90s alternative rock. They’re actually one of my top 3 favorite bands! The next song y’all NEED to react to is their very first hit, “Name.” It’s my favorite song by them, and it’s such a pretty song. AMBER ESPECIALLY will love it!!
Slide is my favorite Goo Goo Dolls song followed close behind by Black Balloon. There’s something about their music that is so distinct that it takes you back.
Ok, but if you haven't listened to Name, the song that put them on the map, you really need to. That song encapsulates so much of this time in the 90s. It takes you there.
So here in Buffalo, they are still crazy popular, but one of the things that Robbie (their bass player) is known for is hosting a huge like multiday music and art festival in town with all kinds of local bands of every genre and local artists. Their older stuff is a totally different vibe than the stuff from the album you guys have heard songs from and may be even more up Jay's alley. Naked is one of my favorites, but Name was their first big big hit.
This is my favorite song from the Goo Goo Dolls. Has one of the best lines in a song "What you feel is what you are. What you are is beautiful." I had the pleasure of seeing them open for Bon Jovi.
The Goo's as we call them here in their hometown of Buffalo New York! Have many hits!!!! Johnny and Robbie are absolute legends here!!! From their start as a early punk rock band to their cross over, legendary!!
Great song My grandmothers name was Mae... she ran away to get married at 16.... I played this for her and she almost cried..... After that she called it her song
Amber's ability to absorb and process music and lyrics is very very impressive. Nobody else picks up so much from a single listen to a song. I'm glad she's a teacher of young kids because that's very important and I bet she's amazing, but she could have done anything she wanted with that level of perception and intuition.
This reminds me of a HUGE song from a few years ago, I know you'll like. 317 Million views... Band is Snow Patrol. Song is Chasing Cars. It touches on something all humans feel from time to time, just wanting an escape. Beautifully orchestrated & filmed.
Yes please! I love Snow Patrol especially "Chasing Cars" and "Take Back The City". I love the Goo Goo Dolls too (this song probably being my favourite) but "Name" is brilliant as well and also John Rzeznik's song "I'm Still Here" (as used in Disney's Treasure Planet). If we're making requests, can we have Johnny Clegg and Jaluka's song "Scatterlings of Africa" as well?
@@allenrobison8103 that is true though, it is a great song. And IDK, I'm older than I look. I was just making sure though, because a lot of people believe the age of the song is the age of the UA-cam video.
They are an awesome band. Back in the 90's they were playing at Disney Grad Nights and I was a runner / assistant for them. I picked them up and they hardly even spoke to each other in the van...but when they hit the stage...itcwas magic seeing them together. Great musicians.
One of the best bands ever. I really like the lead singer's voice. My favorite song of theirs is Over And Over. You are absolutely correct, the Goo Goo Dolls are one of the best, underrated bands out there. They really should be in every music discussion, because they are superb. This is no Industry cookie cutter band, they are self made and write all their own music. Their lyrics have deep meaning.
Wow...several lifetimes ago this was one of my mains in karaoke...it helps deal with anxiety when your drowning. All the rock songs from that time helped to bring form and concept to what I couldn't figure out fast enough.
Slide was a East coast, at least in Virginia Beach, jam! I remember hearing it everywhere. I'm new here so I get a kick out of seeing people discover music that slipped by or maybe was a little before your time.
Hey guys, this was late 90's.Another song from the same time that you will love is called Arms Wide Open by Creed. You will love the lead singers voice, and he wrote it for his little boy.
Group was formed in 1986 and is still active. They were most popular in the 90's. They are classified as Alternative Rock/Pop Rock. John Rzeznik is on vocals as lead singer/guitarist. I forgot their breakout song Name in 1995. You'll like that too.
Goo Goo Dolls are my favorite band of all time and I recently went to a concert, a lot of people around my age don't really listen to them so I was one of the only teens there and it was just amazing, I couldn't stop singing every song and it was the best concert I've been to. Listening and singing along to Iris in real life felt so surreal.
A Boy Named Goo, Dizzy Up The Girl and Gutterflower were three hit albums for this band in the 1990s. Highly recommend the songs "Name", "Black Balloon" and "Here Is Gone."
From Buffalo, New York. Apparently a girl i went to high school with near Toronto married the singer. Not sure if that's true or not but that's what i've heard. Edit: i just heard Jay say under the radar. Totally agree. Everything was grunge in the 90s. I live in Toronto which is only 2 hours from Buffalo so Goo Goo Dolls were on radio a lot here but still overall i think they flew under the radar too. Good point Jay.
Johnny Rzeznik as lead vocalist has a distinct sound. Other great songs include Black Balloon, Name, and Better Days. Some other '90s and early 2000's bands that have great catalogs of music (like the Goo Goo Dolls) include The Killers, Gin Blossoms, The Fray, and Lifehouse.
My wife and I met in the spring of 2000 when this song still had a lot of airplay. It was among a handful of songs which we still consider "our songs" and we still get a bit choked up whenever we hear them. Even just a few short 20+ years ago, things were just different. This one is probably our favorite. ❤
The formative influence on this band was The Replacements, an important early alternative band from the middle 80's. Songs in this vein would include things like "Valentine" or "Never Mind"...Would love to see a reaction...
I was growing up in the 90's like teenager in the 90's and The Goo Goo Dolls are an absolute stamp of the 90's for me. The nostalgia is real when I hear them. Still love these songs. The Goo Goo Dolls song Name is my favorite.
So I wrote a comment already about the band but wanted to add that you should also check out "Black Balloon" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Also, John Rzeznik (lead singer) is such an amazing song writer. 💜❤
Time for another late 90s early 2000s band that is amazing! "Five for Fighting" is the band. Check out "Superman (It's Not Easy)" or "100 Years" for a fantastic intro to their music. Excellent song writing, excellent sound, you'll love it. The "100 years" song really hits hard when you realise how fast life passes by us.
90s had many many great bands. Quite a few of them were from United Kingdom, Ireland especially . Many, many great bands. Cranberries, Corrs, U2, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Barenaked Ladies, Hootie and the Blowfish, TLC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, and the list goes on and on and on , you're still just scratching it. So much more fun for you guys. Thank you for this one. Still reminds me of G105 back home Raleigh. The Bob and Madison Show.
This song takes me back to 98/99 when I was still in high school. Another song I loved from this period was Blondie's Maria. You should do that one soon. It's another high energy song with a melancholy undertone.
Black Balloon by the Goo Goo Dolls is one of my favorite songs of all time. Every time I hear it I'm instantly taken back to 1999. I highly recommend you give it a listen.
The entire "Dizzy Up The Girl" and "Gutterflower" albums are worth a listen to. A personal favorite band of mine. They play locally nearly every summer, just doesn't seem like summer without a Goo Goo Dolls show now, and I've already got my ticket for this year! The song "Dizzy" is a really good one to check out. Also "Sympathy" if you want something a little softer. A couple more recent ones though would be "Rebel Beat" and "Last Hot Night"
It’s good to see you two are trying music that is new to you. They are from Buffalo New York. Where I’m from. If you herd there early music. It was sooooo different. They would play at a spot. Called the sky room on Seneca st in Buffalo. Met them so many times back them. Great group of guys.
SuperStar Car Wash is still probably my favorite album by them. Back when they still had a bit more grit on songs like Cuz You're Gone, Fallin' Down, but even the ballad-type We Are the Normal rocks. Gutterlfower is an underrated album as well, with songs like Here Is Gone, Big Machine, and It's Over. They started getting poppy after that, but still have decent albums. A song off their 2019 album that was never released as a single that should have been, and deserves a listen, is Think It Over; that song is full of nice touches.
This song is the 90s equivalent of the Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" - just a joyous, infectious, skipping down the street, open up the sunroof & stick your hands in the sky vibe to it.
Love the Goo Goo Dolls. There was a point I had this album on repeat. Check out “Black Balloon”! And an older song called “Name” if you haven’t done it yet. The lead singer, John Rzeznik, also sang a song for Disneys Treasure Planet, “I’m Still Here”..also a good one.
nothing like hearing the boys from my home town...yes they are from Buffalo, NY. and John Rzeznik still owns the house he grew up in on our "Superman Corner" (the intersection of Clark and Kent streets here in the Buff). Y'all really need to check out their " Live in Buffalo: July, 4, 2004" concert. they were amazing. 60K people in the plaza before our city hall to hear the Goos play
Love y’all!! Comment is not for the music but rather the tornado mention. I was on I-35 rolling south in May of 2013. I thought I was going to die. I was in an 18 wheeler and had no place to go. Called my wife and told her this was it, I love you. I’ll never forget that day. EF 5 ain’t nothing to play with!

Toad the Wet Sprocket, the most underrated 90s band.
Live ("Lightning Crashes") without a doubt, and some UFO Love to Love
I agree.. Toad is too often overlooked…
I would also add Soul Asylum-Runaway Train, Gin Blossoms-Hey Jealousy, and a personal favorite, Poi Dog Pondering-Living With the Dreaming Body. Also if they do Tori Amos, I would start with Silent All These Years.

I've seen this band in concert opening up for Matchbox 20. Both are great bands and fantastic live. This is my favorite Goo Goo song! 🤘😃
Mine too
I saw that same tour. Amazing!
MB20 is Awesome. Need more.
I've seen MB20 3 times and I've seen googoo dolls once with Fastball and Sugar Ray opening for them.

This song makes me nostalgic for the late nineties. My favorite part is just when Jay pauses the video. Great climax.
This song takes me back to 98/99 when I was still in high school. Another song I loved from this period was Blondie's Maria. You should do that one soon. It's another high energy song with a melancholy undertone.
"Name" by Goo Goo Dolls is excellent. My favorite of theirs.
Sammy John's " Chevy Van" 1978 very popular ride in the 70's.
Let Love In is another great tune by this outstanding band...
Goo Goo Dolls are one of my favorite bands from the 90s.
This one , Name , and Broadway are favorites.
Saw ‘em in concert at least twice. Good, fun band.
This song is the 90s equivalent of the Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" - just a joyous, infectious, skipping down the street, open up the sunroof & stick your hands in the sky vibe to it.
This is my favourite of their songs ❤
WOW! LOVE THE GOO GOO DOLLS! THEY ARE AMAZING! React to more of their songs please; loved your reaction on this one too!
Seen them in concert in the 90's at the Arizona state fair and they put on a amazing show...
You should check out their first hit "Name" it's still my favorite from them. They have quite a few good songs.

I worried about you guys all day. NAME should be your next Goo Goo Dolls song. I think Amber will love it
Oh man, this made me think of another 90s band you need to hear... Dishwalla. Two songs are "Counting Blue Cars" and "Pretty Babies"

The entire album, A Boy Named Goo is terrific. I suggest checking out this band's biggest influence, The Replacements for a reaction.
“Big Machine”, “Here is Gone” and “Name” are some songs that you have to hear. Can’t go wrong with those.
