Bette Midler is not an actress who can sing. She is a singer who can act. She is primarily known for her beautiful voice. She recorded Wind Beneath my Wings but it had been recorded by several very well-known singers before Bette Midler covered it. Sheena Easton, Lee Greenwood, Gladys Knight and the Pips and Perry Como, all recorded it before Midler but it was Midler's version that really launched this song.
This was mine and my brother's song. He was the baby of the family until I came along when he was 7. He was never jealous, he made me shine. He had serious health problems. 1st open heart at 13, a ruptured brain aneurysm, 5 heart attacks before he passed away. He never stopped laughing or making us laugh. He was my Hero. Is my Hero. He asked me to play this at his funeral. I still draw strength from him. Love you Randy❤❤

I love, From A Distance, I think America needs this song right now great song. Love this song too played it at my moma's funeral. BTW Bette sounds exactly the same live
"From a Distance" is beautiful, although I always think of "The Rose" as her signature song. Bette Midler is also genuinely funny and great at comedy. She was in a bunch of hilarious movies in the 1980s in particular (I thought "Outrageous Fortune" was hilarious in addition to being ridiculous, but "Ruthless People" and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" are probably better). She was also magic with Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton in "First Wives Club" and "Drowning Mona" was outstanding, IMO. Plus she's iconic for "Hocus Pocus."
I love Wind Beneath My Wings. But From a Distance is a song for all humanity to hear and understand. Because God is watching us. And humanity is not looking so good.
Bette is a singer, songwriter, choreographer, actress, she’s super talented! The Rose was a movie I won’t ever forget, thinking it was loosely based on Janis Joplin, but Bette as well, so she soared through it. Another movie was Beaches where this tune came from, she has been in a lot of popular films. This song was used in real life for weddings, funerals, can’t remember if she wrote it, but this lady can sing and has been since the 70’s. Thanks B.P.👍❤️
Hocus Pocus, First Wives Club, Gypsy just to name a few. She can do it all. Sing, act comedy and drama, Broadway, etc. The movie was about 2 girls that met at a beach each summer growing up.
Yes that movie The Rose a docudrama of Janis Jolins’ life. Absolutely hypnotic to watch. A rare performance, she immerses herself in it so totally. Very moving.

Her voice & the emotion in it, when she sings, makes for a truly memorable performance.
The Divine Miss M. A triple threat. Her first hit was Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, a Big Band song from the 1940's. She sang all three parts of the trio, a unique overdubbing in th early 1970s.. She's the complete package. She started out on Broadway in a 1969 production of "Fiddler on the Roof" playing one of the daughters. She then sang in bath houses in NYC and became the darling of the gay community who gave her the name The Divine Miss M. I saw her in concert in 1975 and it still was the best concert I've ever attended and I've been to a lot. She's an uptempo joy and can break your heart with sad songs like "Hello In There" or "Shiver Me Timbers". Nominated for 17 Grammys, she won 3 including Best New Artist in 1974. She won 3 Tonys, the last for "Hello Dolly" in 2018 and also has three Emmys and two Oscar nominations. She is also a Kennedy Center Honor recipient.
She also hit the bath houses in Oregon, and I sure the west coast in general. I had a land lord back in the late sixties/early seventies that owned a gay bar in Portland and he used to tell stories of her at the bath houses there.
@@Shonierose We also need to recognize that she performed at these venues during the beginning of the "Gay Cancer" (AIDS) epidemic while the straight community treated them like lepers. Her compassion shines through in her music.
I have been lucky enough to have seen Bette Midler in concert twice in Cleveland. Believe me, there is nothing artificial about this woman. Back when she started out, you either had it or you didn't. There were no special effects. My Mother loved this song so much that I had it played at her wake. For me and a lot of other people, it's a real tear-jerker! Fun fact: early in her career her musical director and pianist was none other than Barry Manilow. They both started out around the same time in NYC, and as they say...the rest is history. I'm really enjoying your reactions, so keep up the good work! Thanks!
“Wind Beneath My Wings,” originally written by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley in 1982, began as a love song. When Bette Midler first sang the song for the movie "Beaches,” it became a vulnerable ode from Midler's character to a friend who died in the film. Dec 8, 2023
My grandmother love Bette Midler The rose. Shes gone now, .For years, i havent been able to listen to that song without ending up in in complete bits. I hope you are at peace up there Nan,
Bette Midler got her start singing in the gay clubs and bath houses waaayyyy back in the day, same as Barry Manilow, back when you weren't even out of diapers. She paid her dues long ago, and then broke into movies and other activities. If I'm not mistaken, Manilow played piano when she sang in the clubs. One of her fun films was Hocus Pocus, but she's a lot more than just a comedic actress. She's a star's star, imo
If you haven't seen the movie Beaches (1988), here's the synopsis: "Hillary (Barbara Hershey) and CC (Bette Midler) meet as children vacationing in Atlantic City, N.J., and remain friends throughout the decades. As CC, a loud New Yorker, pursues a singing career, Hillary, a staid Californian, becomes a successful lawyer. Over the years, they often quarrel or compete, but, as other relationships flourish and die, the two women are always there for each other, traveling from coast to coast through the most tumultuous times." Be sure there's plenty of Kleenex available, especially for the end of the movie. The actress who plays CC as a young girl is Mayim Bialik, who played the title character in the TV series Blossom (1991-1995) and Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory starting in 2010.
She didn't do everything within her vocal capabilities here. This is a very emotional song from a heartbreaking movie about best friends. There was a bit of a tinny & echo-y effect, but some of the was just late '80s music production. Regarding vocal capability, think of Billie Eilish and the vocal restraint she used in the song she & her brother did for the Barbie movie. She is capable of a very different sound, but held back for the effect it would have regarding the mood of the piece. This woman is so talented. She's an American treasure.
@@ramonaferry8075 Just presenting a recent, popular example of vocal/breath style changes/capability, not comparing aptitude/talent. That's a completely different convo (except that I DID finish my comment regarding Midler by saying "This woman is so talented. She's an American treasure." I basically let him know if she wasn't being flashy with her talent in this song, it was by design not ability).
I still cry every time I hear even just the first few lines. I cry for joy .. I cry for loss. My best friend for five decades .. she was the absolute ALL. I miss you T. H. Beyond words, I miss you!
This is from the Beaches soundtrack, which Bette starred in - about two best friends. Bette can sing her ass off! She can also act her ass off! I've seen Beaches 10 times and still makes me cry GALLONS of tears! Please react to The Rose! Another title track to a Bette Midler movie - The Rose is loosely based on Janis Joplin. She started out singing at gay bathhouses back in the day. She's the Divine Miss M - the one and only. Very LOVED!!
Damn, I teared up just listening to this recording and seeing the video again. The movie "Beaches" according to Wikipedia: The song won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction (Albert Brenner and Garrett Lewis).
Bette is amazing at everything she does. Singer, actress, comedian, wife, mother, person who cares for others. ♥ Always to you Bette! If you watch the movie Beaches, you will understand the words to this song.
Better Midler is awesome and an all around talent. She was discovered while performing at a local drag club. LOL My fav is Miss Ottis. She did a duo with Mick Jaggar... Go down that rabbit hole it will be worth it! 😁❤️
Oh yeah, Bette can really sing. I think she broke into the movies after several years as a recording artist. One of my favorites is her her rendition of You Don't Know Me. Her most famous song is probably The Rose. You might recognize that one. Thanks for sharing Bette. She's a keeper.
I just read a few other comments. Yes, you need to see the movies "Beaches" which this song is from and "The Rose" which is based on the life of Janis Joplin. You would love both! An awesome performer. I'd love to see her perform live again.
This always moves me to tears! I saw Bette Midler in concert when I was young...Her integrity moved me then and that same feeling comes back to me even now at 72 years old! 😢🙏💜💐 What a gift!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE BETTE MIDLER.. “Ruthless People,” “Beaches,” “Hocus Pocus 1 & 2”,and “For the Boys” are a few of the movies she's stared in... But her very 1st movie as well as the BIGGEST was a movie called "The Rose"...It's based off of Janis Joplin's life, which gave Bette Midler just a couple of rewards, nothing too over the top..lol Just an Oscar nomination as Best Actress, two Golden Globes as Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and Best New Star of the Year-Female and a Grammy for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for the film’s title song.
Johnny Carson had her on his last tv show. She sang to him and most everyone cried because he was leaving tv. She evokes a lost of feelings. She’s a fine actor and does a great job in Beaches.
God, how I miss my older sister. Almost 7 years now. She suffered a lifetime of abuse from our parents. Unfortunately her body could no longer handle psyche meds etc, and she passed away before they did. This song gets me every damn time.
She used to tour with Barry Manilow in fact he was her piano player. In 1980 she won an Oscar for The Rose a film loosely based on Janis Joplin you should check out the theme song from it.
Bette Midler..The Rose...(both the movie and the song) just blew me away. BIG fan of her. I've seen her live a few times over the last 25 years. She is legendary.
Bette Midler is one of our True Divas. The Total Package. She's so talented, funny, great actor, singer. Since the 70s. You gotta see The Rose, and check out her song from that movie too.
Bette Midler is one third of the three Grand Dames of Broadway -- the other two are Barbra Streisand and Liza Minelli. Great voices, great actresses, fantastic live on stage.
Better was equal to Barbra. This song needed containment because in the film, this ties their story from childhood to adulthood, and their different paths, with a truly amazing ending. 😭 Bette can belt. But this song needed.. "still" to tell the story. I cry EVERY time. Think it speaks to (mainly) women who walk in the shadow of their men, but... ARE.. the Wind beneath their partner's wings, who are.. there all the way.
My mom loved this movie! 🙏🏽💜.This song was a mega hit for Bette! She sung the theme song and starred in the movie too! The movie is a terrific tearjerker! Check out her remake of The Rolling Stones classic, “Beast of Burden”! ❤❤
I was in a really bad car accident when I was 5 years old. She has looked after me since I was 5,and I am 43 now. My mother and I use this song as our mantra
I love Bette Midler, aka, The Divine Miss M, as others have said. She has such a way with her beautiful voice to make you feel the emotions of the song and cry. This is one of my all time fave songs by her. I also love From A Distance & The Rose. Absolutely phenomenal songs. Wind Beneath My Wings was in the movie she starred in called Beaches. It is so worth the watch. But, have tissues near by. It is most definitely a tear jerker. :-)
Bette Midler played in Beaches. But Bette Midler also played in other movies as well. She also sang the Rose and she performed a song with the Rolling Stones called Beast of Burden.
See her live sing “Set it up Joe,” to Johnny Carson on his last show as he retired. It’s absolutely one of my favorite moments in the TV era. Along with Whitney sing the national anthem.
I use to play this for my dad. He was my hero and did his best to help me move forward in life. I lost him in 2022 and it still hurts, but I will never stop listening to Bette.
Bette, The Devine Miss M, came from Hawaii and migrated to NYC. In the late 60's early 70's. She honed her stage presence at the Continental Baths with a young Barry Manilow as her pianist. I start attending her concerts starting in the late 70's through the 90's. In her early shows she did a bit called "Delores Delago, the toast of Chicago, with the Harlettes" The performance was done with the ladies dressed as mermaids with tails. They performed in motorized wheelchairs, and a huge mirror would angle from the ceiling so the fans could watch the wheelchair choreography from above. FYI, Katey Sagal (Peg Bundy) was one of the Harlettes. Another fun fact, Bette was Johnny Carson's final guest on the final Tonight Show on 5/22/1992, and sang "One for my Baby (One More For The Road)" Another good reaction.
Bette, in the tradition of Judy Garland and others, was a singer/actress who could also work as a stand up comedian in a pinch. She's got talents and training in many adjacent fields of the entertainment industry. This particular song you'd know best from the movie "Beaches" when she was younger. (A FANTASTIC movie incidentally. Great touching movie to watch as a family)
She has an AMAZING range...she is predominantly a singer who also acts. She purposefully held back on this song. Listen to From a Distance and, of course, The Rose.
Bette was a singer first before she got into acting. This is the theme song to the beautiful and sad movie Beaches. It’s about two lifelong friends who met when they were young girls. My best friend and I have know each other 52 years .. since we were 3 and 4 years old. This is our song and movie. ❤
I love your reactions, you understand the beauty of the lyrics of some great songs. This is a great song, very touching and reminds me of my mum now in Heaven.❤
Ive seen a lot of concerts but really Bette Midler is the greatest living live performer. Her concert in 1975 was the very first produced by HBO in the mid-70s.
Great talent... this song is from the movie Beaches which was a great movie. Another movie "The Rose" was powerful. Loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin. Impactful & also sad knowing how Janis died so young due to her own demons. Bette Midler did a phenomenal portrayal
I loved her in Beaches and the song to this day makes cry to this day not only because of the movie but it was played at my grandma's funeral. I listened to all of it to hear your reaction and it made my day.
Dude! This is awesome but you got to Hear ,THE ROSE ! I think it’s better, myself. She’s been in quite a few movies,Bu,she’s also a fantastic singer from broadway,I believe! The movie with the rose song,is about the life and death of Janice Joplin!
Bette Midler is first a singer andventertainer. She started out in little clubs and gay bath houses in N.Y.C. She then became an actress as well. Singer, comedian, actress, and all round entertainer. Some of her movies are: Beaches, The Rose, The First Wives Club, Hocus Pocus. Bette was on the recording of "We Are The World" and can be seen on the video. Bette is known as 'The Devine Miss M". Bette also sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" at a city wide memorial service for all those lost on 9/11 ( she brought tears to everyone's eyes). She was born in Hawaii but resides in N.Y.C., she is a wife and mom.
This song means so much to me. It was a song that my children said was meant for my mother. Years after my mother listened to this beautiful song for the first time, it is now played on her birthday every year in hopes that the sound reaches heaven and her gentle heart. Thank you for reacting to one of the most important songs in my life

Hey there fellow buckeye. Born and raised in the land. Then ended up in lorain County
Me too!!!
“Wind Beneath My Wings,” originally written by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley in 1982, began as a love song. When Bette Midler first sang the song for the movie "Beaches,” it became a vulnerable ode from Midler's character to a friend who died in the film. Dec 8, 2023
Didn't she die of a similar disease as the one her character in Beaches did?
❤Bette was a singer with a huge career. She is a talented actress as well. This is from the movie Beaches😭. Bette Midler is a bad ass
You can see her with he bright red hair in the right front row in We Are the World!!!!
She was a singer first and is an awesome live performer. Her and Barbara Streisand are contemporaries.
My sister passed away Sept 27th, 2022 and when I hear this song, it brings such tears. She WAS my hero and my big sister. :/
Beaches is a must see!!! Because of that movie my best friend and I danced at her wedding to this song!
Fudge billie Eilish not even close To my Lady M
@@ramonaferry8075 Just presenting a recent, popular example of vocal/breath style changes/capability, not comparing aptitude/talent. That's a completely different convo (except that I DID finish my comment regarding Midler by saying "This woman is so talented. She's an American treasure." I basically let him know if she wasn't being flashy with her talent in this song, it was by design not ability).
The Movie THE ROSE will break you
I love her voice. Great singer and very talented actress. I can never hear this song without crying. It's so beautiful.
She was a singer who was also in movies - good at both.
I still cry every time I hear even just the first few lines. I cry for joy .. I cry for loss. My best friend for five decades .. she was the absolute ALL. I miss you T. H. Beyond words, I miss you!
I do, too. This film came out the SAME year my best friend at the time died. It destroyed me for a good year and this song still makes me cry.
Very LOVED!!
oh yes The Rose is beautiful too !!!
I love Beaches
Damn, I teared up just listening to this recording and seeing the video again. The movie "Beaches" according to Wikipedia: The song won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction (Albert Brenner and Garrett Lewis).
@@jannibal9273I did as well. I think anyone who has seen the movie does as this song goes perfectly with the movie and it's message.
Also this must be a bad recording. This tin sound in this is not how I remember this song. You are right her raw voice is amazing!
Love "Miss Otis"..
Oh yeah, Bette can really sing. I think she broke into the movies after several years as a recording artist. One of my favorites is her her rendition of You Don't Know Me. Her most famous song is probably The Rose. You might recognize that one. Thanks for sharing Bette. She's a keeper.
She was the original! The Divine Miss M doesn’t need to copy anyone!!
Bette Midler is amazing. She can do pop, musicals, acting. She played the lead in Gypsy - great movie and singing. She's been around since the 70s
What a gift!
Her voice is so strong and beautiful , and she herself is beautiful ♥♥ Gives me chills every time
Bette Midler was a singer/performer long before she became an actress. She's was quite famous. This song was made for the film Beaches.
She’s a fine actor and does a great job in
Beaches.
God, how I miss my older sister. Almost 7 years now. She suffered a lifetime of abuse from our parents. Unfortunately her body could no longer handle psyche meds etc, and she passed away before they did. This song gets me every damn time.
So so sorry. Your sister is at peace now ❤
Awwww that's awful, I'm so sorry for your loss.
I’ve seen her 3 times in concert. Never a dull moment in her shows. Serious at times, hilarious at others. High energy.
Patti LuPone should be spliced in!
@@DeannaAKADeanna Huh. Never heard of her, sorry.
Once you hear this ,it will never leave your mind..I love it.
Bette so talented .She does it all.......Playlist ❤❤❤❤
One of the best concerts I have seen. Great comedian and singer.
My mom loved this movie! 🙏🏽💜.This song was a mega hit for Bette! She sung the theme song and starred in the movie too! The movie is a terrific tearjerker! Check out her remake of The Rolling Stones classic, “Beast of Burden”! ❤❤
Yes, She's also called The Divine Miss M !!❤❤
I was in a really bad car accident when I was 5 years old. She has looked after me since I was 5,and I am 43 now. My mother and I use this song as our mantra
You personally know better midler?
I love Bette Midler, aka, The Divine Miss M, as others have said. She has such a way with her beautiful voice to make you feel the emotions of the song and cry. This is one of my all time fave songs by her. I also love From A Distance & The Rose. Absolutely phenomenal songs. Wind Beneath My Wings was in the movie she starred in called Beaches. It is so worth the watch. But, have tissues near by. It is most definitely a tear jerker. :-)
when my child died at 17, I picked this song for her. I saw it as mother, giving tribute.
Bette Midler played in Beaches. But Bette Midler also played in other movies as well. She also sang the Rose and she performed a song with the Rolling Stones called Beast of Burden.
One of my favorite movies period! Beaches
Beaches is the best ever!!!
I loved her in Beaches.I cried so many times during this movie.
❤❤❤Awww this song was played at my Granny's funeral in 2000. Just have to share.
Years ago I dedicated this to my sister…thanks, SL, for being the best big sister any girl could ask for. I love you endlessly…
This is the original. The Divine Miss M is a force and this song will always make me.cry!
Musician, comedian, actress, Entertainer with a capital E
She was in Hocus Pocus
This makes me cry every time I hear it. Reminds me of my loving parents, special friends, great teachers…
🎉she’s a comedian, a singer and actor. Super talented.
This song perfectly reveals how I feel about my big sister Regina, May she rest in Peace. I miss you sis
Bette was a singer. She did start in two films “The Rose” and “Beaches” . I love her
Hocus Pocus, First Wives
@@janp719 I forgot about those
By my count, she's been in almost 50 movies.
Big Business with Lily Tomlin is a funny old one.
This song was from the movie “Beaches” which she starred in. It was about two life long friends and one getting very sick and eventually passing away
"what's she been in?" Big Business with Lily Tomlin, this song is from the movies Beaches, most people know Hocus Pocus, First Wives Club
She doesn't need pitch correction. She sings this live perfectly.
FYI this is from the movie Beaches you would have to watch it to understand it❤❤❤❤❤
Bette was a singer first before she got into acting. This is the theme song to the beautiful and sad movie Beaches. It’s about two lifelong friends who met when they were young girls.
My best friend and I have know each other 52 years .. since we were 3 and 4 years old. This is our song and movie. ❤
This song was REAL popular on Armed Service Radio when I was in Desert Storm...so that's probably where you heard it.
Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley wrote the song. Not well known composers, but they wrote a gem in this one.
I listened to all of it to hear your reaction and it made my day.
she was also singing in usa for africa & she's also a movie star , check out the movie with her : ''The Rose''
Bette Midler is SOooo talented, I think she can do anything and make it sound/look good
Dude! This is awesome but you got to Hear ,THE ROSE ! I think it’s better, myself. She’s been in quite a few movies,Bu,she’s also a fantastic singer from broadway,I believe! The movie with the rose song,is about the life and death of Janice Joplin!
Yes, yes, yes, yes!!! The Rose.
Definitely a singer first but an entertainer through and through. Her concert was the best I’ve been to. Hands down.
This song is from one of her movies “Beaches” such a fantastic movie!
I was born in the mid 50s so I experienced all this wonderful music and the incredible artist so I love that you are experiencing it too❤️🙏🏼
Bette Midler is first a singer andventertainer.
One of my favorirea
THE DIVINE Ms M!
This song means so much to me. It was a song that my children said was meant for my mother. Years after my mother listened to this beautiful song for the first time, it is now played on her birthday every year in hopes that the sound reaches heaven and her gentle heart. Thank you for reacting to one of the most important songs in my life
