I found it odd because I’m sure that entrance was intended to be the hole where the Aurora was shot into because the gun sought the energy signatures (assumption) but who knows
I like to think that the "Spiky biome" was a starting point for the dev to make the Gargantuan Leviathan. We know that only a small portion of the skeletal remains are visible in the Lost River, and it would make sense for a creature that large to leave more than just it's skull and very upper spine visible from its remains. Perhaps this was meant to be it's ribs, like in the Rotten Vale in Monster Hunter World, which is just a huge area of rot and decay which was created when another Super Large Leviathan Elder Dragon died and its remains eventually created the Rotten Vale.

Sometimes I wonder how this game would play if the earlier versions of biomes were inserted into the new version, and if I'd have even more fun with it. Thanks for the exploration, Bacon!
I remember looking for it before realizing the video I watched that showed it was early access not the full game. I didn't think about at the time that there were probably things that were removed from the game in full release. 😂
So interesting to see that the lost river potentially wasnt an area and that the lava zone was potentially meant to be bigger and more open. I wonder if they intended to have a larger predator in the old lava zone. Maybe somthing more of a similar size to the gargantuan leviathan or it could have been to accommodate the sea emperor because wasnt she meant to be a predator in early builds.
Imagine the spike biome isn’t naturally formed and an intelligent life form that hunts in the area chiseled the stone into spikes to ram their prey into while they hunt for food. That’s something I’d like to see more of, Subnautica creatures actively using their environment to hunt, kind of like crashfish

While it will probably take you a few episodes to get to, once you get to the Jan-2017 build (43604), make sure to check out what would become the Lava Lakes zone. When I was playing the game at that time, I accidentally clipped through the ground from the Safe Shallows. Since I was in my prawn suit, I just sorta just let myself fall for a bit until I saw something and was able to grapple back in-bounds. Wow i remember combing through old versions of the game trying to find that unfinished lava zone. Thank you for finding it as it was a memorable experience for me stumbling across it for the first time. Back in 2015 when i was playing survival i was using my new Cyclops to explore the grand reef, I remember being in awe of how otherworldly the biome was and for me i was like 16 and most things about the game were EXTREMELY unknown to me. As i was exploring with my Cyclops I just kept slowly going deeper until i found a huge cave opining that felt extremely out of place. When i came up on it i recalled how the entrance was truly massive for where it was in the biome. I thought it was a further extension of the biome or even a giant arch so i slowly went inside, not realizing how alien it was until the sea color changed. The flood lights of the sub just made it harder to see so i turned them off, then slowly as the game light adjusted i realized how unnatural the place was. Bulbous black rock everywhere devoid of color, only visible through the outline it made against the red stained water. I pressed on slowly, unsure of my surroundings and my feelings. The only feeling i was sure about; was that i do not belong here. I creeped on for what felt like an hour, slowly weaving my way through knocking against the basalt until at one point i became utterly lost. Unable to escape my predicament the only way to go was down, depleted of power i entered my seamoth abandoning my mother sub and found the most unsettling location i had ever seen in a game. What i now know as the backrooms, as i sped towards the bottom of the cave the round voxels suddenly giving away to 90* angles, cubes, and large void spaces. I was very much horrified and panicked. Panicking back and nearly loosing myself in an area i was never meant to see i find my way back to the unfinished lava zone to find a dead lava castle before me. At the time i was so freaked out by the experience i abandoned the play through and put the game down for a good chunk of time, not really playing seriously until it was 90% complete. While i think the new Subnautica is a far better game the older versions are far more empty and give a much better feeling of isolation and at times terror.
man i remember this point in the games development idk what update you could but you could spawn the sea emperor in . they were much smaller and had no animations. there was also i believe the starts of the sea emperors containment being added away back when it was just a deep hole in the lava zone. there used to be a command to go there. the old way open lava zone used to freak people out ,because of the emptiness , to the point of them getting lost in the vast nothing.
The green eyes on the reaper definitely convey the idea that they’re blind more than the current iteration, that being said the pure black on the current ones are equally as terrifying if you’re a new player and don’t realise if a reaper is roaring in the distance it most likely sees you.
I've never played early access Subnautica (console player) but the hellhole leading into the early Lava Zone have been a favorite thing for me to learn about. Then you found the second one shown in the video. Anyway, I read on the Subnautica wiki that there were three entrances to the Lava Zone, two of which, if I'm not mistaken, are the previously mentioned hellholes. One in the Crash Zone (the first hellhole you talked about) and the second in the Deep Grand Reef. The third was located in the Dunes. I don't know any more information at the time, but I just thought it would be worth mentioning the Dunes entrance.
You're playing the very first build of Subnautica I ever played. Nice to see all these memories. I miss the Reapers on the west side of the Aurora and the Spike biome.
If you jump forward to the August 2016 build, the lava zone still looked like that but it had a massive dropoff somewhere along the floor where the sea emperor’s habitat would eventually be, but in this version it was just super dark water with what looked like a completely barren Safe Shallows inside it, no fauna or flora of any kind…except…there is actually something down there, and as far as i know, “Markiplier” was the only big Subnautica UA-camr to ever find “him”
I like how those crystals in the first build are still somewhat present in the deep Grandreef today. I always wondered why they were there, since they sort of look out of place.
7:38 eye stalks... Also i love that seaglide sound! I remember it, i wish they hadn't changed it... That quartz model may have been unfinished, but i still want it back
Fun fact there’s still a hell hole in the base game I never hear anyone talk about it’s not directly into the lava zone but in the bulb zone there’s a hole that leads to the lost river at a point right next to a hole that is a drop into the lava zone so technically there still is one hell hole
At first I didn't even know you could get in through the front of the Aurora when I first started playing, the numerous Reapers definitely didn't help me want to find out, although they weren't as numerous, or as far southwest as they are in the build you're looking at here. The side entrance was the only one I knew of for quite some time, and even after I found out about the front entrance, I never used it until the update which removed the side entrance.
8:57 it is there, and it looks really cool in both versions! Tho I usually don’t go down there because of the amount of bonesharks there. I believe in the final game it also has a geothermal vent inside it. I remember building a base in the backrooms a little after the game had fully released. I used my prawn suit to get down there, and, after realizing I didn’t bring enough materials, got too freaked out and used the glitch to use the repair tool while inside vehicles to get my prawn suit to the 8192 meter depth limit and went back to the surface. I never went down there again. Now I have fears that size reference will be waiting if I go there again lol
I remember reapers being much more common in the first couple of Aurora updates. There was also a glitch, where if you used the terraformer to build a small island and build a base on it, get it's resistance to below zero, it would fill with water.
Dude honestly youre such a good youtuber, and i like how you take time on researching your topics and replying to EVERY comment, thats dedication keep it up dude!
These exploration videos of old builds are great, kinda feels a bit like Basilisk 2000 where you might discover some horrific cult stuff if you look too deeply. The ribs/claws/teeth reef was terrifying.
Bacon so a build you should check out is the one where the seadragon was added to spawn in the world because the lost river was in the game and that "hell hole" was still in the game their were 2 entrances one to the lost river and one to the lost river and that build had a fully functional prawn suit i believe but the moon pool was horribly broken.
The purpose behind the fragment analyzer was to unlock blueprints back in the day. Back then, the scanner didn't exist, and fragments were items you could pick up, rather than what they are now. How it would work is that you would find the fragments in the world, take them and put them into the fragment analyzer, then wait a certain amount of time (I forgot how long, but I think it was like 5 minutes) and that was how you would unlock blueprints. I'm glad they removed it though, the old process sounds really tedious.
maybe the subnautica devs shoud think about a subnautica dlc that gives access to turn it into uncanny vally. just the most unhinged and scary version with liminal spaces as possible
2:34 if you didn't choose the music, i think this was likely the early sparse Reef, it is close to the island so it is possible... (I know alien expanse place more often in the dunes but the terrain formation says Sp. Reef) Or it could just be the crag feild like you said, come to think of it... All of the extremely weird rock formations in the early access builds, farlands, random pillars, etc. could have been the things that inspired the crag feild! Interesting...
i had my first ps4 when i was like 6 and i had subnautica built in i was terrified when i got down into the lost river and couldnt escape just cried lol
I have the impression that in older versions there was greater optimization for higher quality, not counting the Protoyp 8 version where the lava biome was added for testing
Man the texture of the floaging islands, it takes me back so much damn. I remember olaying Subnautica on my shitty Laptop and useing the Teraformer ti make a Tunnel from the lifepod to the lavazone. The old texture if those stones haunts me, I always hated it haha
I have a theory of what the crash zone was before the Aurora was there it was one of the islands this isn't alot of proof but you know those creatures that jump at you and look like a crab? They both live on the islands but they are also on the Aurora.
My earliest Subnautica screenshot was March 2016. Watched some Markiplier videos of it before I bought it myself, was hyped for the finished game. I have a video messing around with some console commands back then, when the game had weird things like a specimen analyzer and terrain modification. Put a reaper in dirt jail.
3:02 i am one of the few who saw it start like this. Not only did i get early access (first fake Neptune rocket version) but I watched Thinknoodles's series on it. And his series in my opinion is the best because it gives you this certain feelings you can't get anywhere else. Even though i know you wont, i seriously recommend watching it!
I remember driving a Cyclops into something like that deep lava cave, or watching someone drive a Cyclops into it, and if I remember right at one time it actually went from one side of the map to the other as just a big cave underneath it all.
Mercury ore was meant for the cyclops fire suppression system, but was replaced by crystalline sulfur, likely being cut to simplify the recipe and being only used for a single recipe, leaving it with the same fate as uranium and magnesium.
I once got stuck in that side entrance and while stuck I was attacked by a reaper for the first time, it was terrifying 😂 it’s crazy to think I’ve been playing this game for a decade 💀
I remember seeing the deep grand reef lava zone entrance in Sl1pg8r's old Subnautica series, he was going through it in a cyclops, but I'm assuming that was a later build since there was no lava bubble balloon things that inflate in this video.
i wish the underwater enterence into the aurora would stay it seems like a really cool idea
It is - I wonder if they felt it was too safe :)
It was great, but also it really made one dizzy.
I remember searching for that enterence in later builds for tens of minutes.
I found it odd because I’m sure that entrance was intended to be the hole where the Aurora was shot into because the gun sought the energy signatures (assumption) but who knows
in my headcanon, the aurora landed right on top of it.
It would have been annoying because of the o2

Love your videos bacon!
Thank you so much :)
Hell in Subnautica seems like something i would expect
Yep same tbh :)
I love your videos and how you edit them!
Thank you very much :)
Yep, its the cragfield
:)
@@TheLastBacon i think you could try a new mod, its call the red plague, and its really insane
I'll absolutely check it out! :)
Yoooooo budddyyyy
You just told me about this lol
The purpose behind the fragment analyzer was to unlock blueprints back in the day. Back then, the scanner didn't exist, and fragments were items you could pick up, rather than what they are now. How it would work is that you would find the fragments in the world, take them and put them into the fragment analyzer, then wait a certain amount of time (I forgot how long, but I think it was like 5 minutes) and that was how you would unlock blueprints. I'm glad they removed it though, the old process sounds really tedious.
Riiiight that makes sense :)
maybe the subnautica devs shoud think about a subnautica dlc that gives access to turn it into uncanny vally. just the most unhinged and scary version with liminal spaces as possible
That would be super interesting :)
2014-15 is around the time I found subnautica and kept up with the updates until the finish.
A true OG! :)
When I played subnautica the spikes were so scary to me, it even looked like that they were moving
True it’s a freaky area! :)
Those giant open caverns in the 2nd hell hole look awesome, hope we get something like that in the new game
Would be super cool! :)
I can't even verbally describe how much I love your content ❤
Thank you so much :)
@@TheLastBacon I'm not even squidding ;)
2:34 if you didn't choose the music, i think this was likely the early sparse Reef, it is close to the island so it is possible...
(I know alien expanse place more often in the dunes but the terrain formation says Sp. Reef)
Or it could just be the crag feild like you said, come to think of it... All of the extremely weird rock formations in the early access builds, farlands, random pillars, etc. could have been the things that inspired the crag feild! Interesting...
Yeah good point - I imagine it was a precursor to the craig field :)
Man this is such a throwback for me
Absolutely :)
Thank you for this fantastic video!
Thank YOU for watching it! :)
i had my first ps4 when i was like 6 and i had subnautica built in i was terrified when i got down into the lost river and couldnt escape just cried lol
Oof yeah I understand that would be scary :)
I could totally see this series just turning into an ARG halfway through.
Now that's a great idea :)
@@TheLastBaconWhat have I done
I have the impression that in older versions there was greater optimization for higher quality, not counting the Protoyp 8 version where the lava biome was added for testing
Hmm maybe :)
no degasi is bad, but the lack of T H E E N T I T Y is a win
Exactly haha :)
I forgot how much I loved Subnautica!
It’s an awesome game :)
3:00 I think this is the version of Subnautica where they first realized they accidentally made a horror game and just decided to go with it.
Haha probably :D
BACON UR MY FAVORITE UA-camR
I LOVE THIS SERIES
Thank you kindly :)
Thanks for the video and i can't wait the new Subnautica i will watch when the game came out. Of course im waiting your videos to watch Subnautica 3
Thank you kindly :) I can’t wait either!
i believe the 2nd hell hole you found was the one markiplier found!
Probably! :)
The way he says, I do not want to be here shows how he goes out of his comfort zone to make cool Content
Yeah it's a mix of me really wanting to see it but also not :D
Lol@@TheLastBacon
as far as I remember, in one of the old versions there was a pillar stone structure like an island on which there were very strange and unusual sounds
Yep there was :) To the side of the Aurora!
Last Bacon is the only creator to discover shit no-one else could.
Trying :)
Ohh no, pretty spooky 👻
Spoopy indeed :)
2:43 It MENACES WITH SPIKES like some Dwarf Fortress relic.
True lol :)
Man i remeber playing these 2 versions
I can safely say that the scariest biome was beneth the floating island
Such a damn creepy place
Same! The only way i ever went doing anything this nuts was with my best friend god mode
It's actually crazy how scary going down from the floating island used to be :)
Man the texture of the floaging islands, it takes me back so much damn. I remember olaying Subnautica on my shitty Laptop and useing the Teraformer ti make a Tunnel from the lifepod to the lavazone. The old texture if those stones haunts me, I always hated it haha
Haha I get what you mean :) Really takes me back too!
2:00 "the gassy bases"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao :D
I just here to say that the last bacon is a giga chad, because he respond every comment in his videos, even if the video is from 1 year ago
Thank you kindly :) I love doing it!
I have a theory of what the crash zone was before the Aurora was there it was one of the islands this isn't alot of proof but you know those creatures that jump at you and look like a crab? They both live on the islands but they are also on the Aurora.
Yeah it's definitely an interesting theory :)
NO WAY HE ACTUALLY RESPONDED
Well
Reapers live near the mountains and they also live near the aurora so makes little more sense
Fun fact the entrance seen for the aurora is still there currently but takes way more effort to go to and doesnt lead to the engine bay
You need to clip through now :) It's no longer normally accessible.
Dang that’s quite early! :)
His series was awesome! :)
imagine a subnautica game focused on horror. basically fuze it with iron lung.
it would be game of the year in an instant
Would be SO cool :)
I remember driving a Cyclops into something like that deep lava cave, or watching someone drive a Cyclops into it, and if I remember right at one time it actually went from one side of the map to the other as just a big cave underneath it all.
Spooky :)
Early Subnautic had some GNARLY terrain,
It sure did haha :)
Mercury ore was meant for the cyclops fire suppression system, but was replaced by crystalline sulfur, likely being cut to simplify the recipe and being only used for a single recipe, leaving it with the same fate as uranium and magnesium.
Oh interesting :) Makes sense!
you are the go-to youtuber for subnuatica fans :)
Thank you kindly :)
Hey it’s you again! Remember my “hell hole” it was the spike area it would glitch and there would be a giant hole and if you go in, you NEVER come out
Sounds very unpleasant :)
@@TheLastBacon it is lol
@@TheLastBacon cus yk the backrooms you found? It was that but.. creative mode so no fly just stuck
The early crag field design looks really cool actually
Absolutely :)
I once got stuck in that side entrance and while stuck I was attacked by a reaper for the first time, it was terrifying 😂 it’s crazy to think I’ve been playing this game for a decade 💀
Dang time sure flies fast! :)
Man, I remember going down there in creative mode with my old MacBook when I was like 9. What a trip, man 😅
Good times :D
The fact that the version 2 bonesharks were spawning vertically made me think they were warpers
Yeah right? It looked so creepy :)
I remember seeing the deep grand reef lava zone entrance in Sl1pg8r's old Subnautica series, he was going through it in a cyclops, but I'm assuming that was a later build since there was no lava bubble balloon things that inflate in this video.
Oh cool :)
8:50 Yes this is in the finished version
Nice :)
Lots of scary stuff we won't miss.
Yep :D
