i have spent so much time in the early access Subautica, it felt so mysterios and otherworldly. i never thought about liminal space back then, but man is that a good word to use to describe it. so creepy. i also remember finding a human model in the middle of the old lava zone that scared me. felt so creepy.
@TheLastBacon that too! The finished subnautica feels more natural and earthlike. But the endless oceans, the strange terrain and drop offs to the void in the early access feels so alien like!
@@zinc2zinc2 Yeah, early access Subnautica was definitely what awakened my love for the liminal vibes found in unfinished games and out of bounds areas. I still remember watching Markiplier's video where he ventured into the unfinished lava zone and found that Wasabi One player size ref. I don't think the hellhole was removed so much as moved elsewhere. It's the precursor to the mountain pass that leads to the Lost River and the lava zones. Though I do think that even littered with reaper bones, the translucent life of the river and the destroyed precursor facility, the early access one retains a more eerie feeling - the same one the void has before the ghost leviathans were added - because you know you're not meant to be there.

The open locker was a thing in a lot of early subnautica builds iirc. I figured it was just decorative. I think this was just before the devs actively made getting into "spoiler" areas impossible. Hence why the route I mentioned in the previous video didn't actually go anywhere.
Man, I still remember watching people play these versions back in like 2014. It seemed so cool and mysterious. I remember having the same feeling when I bought BZ in early access, but unfortunately, same as with original Subnautica, it never lived up to it's full potential.
What? You really think subnautica didn't live up to it's potential? The only reason I can think you'd say that is the missing multiplayer, wich granted, would make it way better, but it's still an incredible game
Looking at the lava castle in this build is insane. Like there is a giant cave rn next to it and massive bodies of water afterwards. Definitely more true to the original concept arts of the lava zone! Both work well but i prefer the old against the new because of the massive space. (Probably better for the sea dragon AI and maybe an explanation on why there a seamoth attack animation in the first place.)
look i know it would be a huge undertaking but the way you keep on making references to the creepy pasta and just the overall horror of these builds gave me the idea that you could work the creepy pasta story into your videos slowly breaking the fourth wall almost like an ARG i know it probably won't happen but it's a cool idea and it would be a shame if i didn't suggest it.
Thanks for revisiting old subnautica early access builds, this is such a nostalgia trip for me since these were my introduction to subnautica, I'm almost tempted to go back to them myself for funsies but you are clearly a braver man than I am Also, this makes me think about the concept of a game in which you have to go back to early access builds to unravel misteries, something like saved games are compatible but the deeper you go, the creepier it gets kinda? I dunno, maybe someday someone will read this comment and make something or maybe someone is already working on it or maybe it already exists, I dunno
As always, I love your videos. They bring back a lot of nostalgia of playing the game with my little brother when he was in middleschool. And of course, with the nostalgia comes the absolute terror I felt/feel playing it hahaha.
I seem to remember Markiplier finding a version of the Hellhole early in his playthrough back in the day, and discovering a T-posing Riley model just standing directly in the middle of the cavern. I was hoping to see it in this video, but it might've been a different version of the game.
Super glad you're doing more of this stuff. Watching your vids of the early access versions really feels like revisiting an old dream that I'd mostly forgotten. Love it! Quick edit: I remember building a base right at the edge of ~the hellhole~, and didn't explore it until after I'd finished the base. What a time that was...
for me it's a pity that there are no such tunnels to the lava biome, that it used to be through crashzone through deepgrand and dunes, because if it were, it could explain the story of reaper leviathan, how he got there, because it suited me, and because he passed through deepgran and lostriver, I don't think so like he really got it and with those tunnels they could explain the leviathan reaper skeleton
I love seeing these early builds of Subnautica. It gives us a glimpse of what the game used to be and what some things could have been if the idea stuck. The early builds do give that creepy vibe, as they seem empty and lifeless…

Like, yea, if you had gone those routes, you would have missed the Lost River. But also those would have also been a lot more of a dangerous route to get down there anyway
you know what, I feel like they should have kept the concept so there is another riskier way to go to the lava zone. imagine reapers around the ship and as you go down you get less and less life with the occasional sea dragon roars in the distance. you dont know whats down there, you cant see much and you feel like you are going down in the void and then that distant roar feels closer, a sea dragon is on the way up to get himself a reaper snack. high risk high reward. it would be fascinating!
@@TheLastBacon Maybe when the game was newer it wouldve worked, but youre right, with a more fleshed out concept that didnt lead you directly to end game it could be. Cant wait to see what they plan on next

you know what, I feel like they should have kept the concept so there is another riskier way to go to the lava zone. imagine reapers around the ship and as you go down you get less and less life with the occasional sea dragon roars in the distance. you dont know whats down there, you cant see much and you feel like you are going down in the void and then that distant roar feels closer, a sea dragon is on the way up to get himself a reaper snack. high risk high reward. it would be fascinating!
I really like the idea too! :) Just feel like with the current mechanics you could easily cheese it.
@@TheLastBacon Maybe when the game was newer it wouldve worked, but youre right, with a more fleshed out concept that didnt lead you directly to end game it could be. Cant wait to see what they plan on next
Oh my ghost -leviathan-
Also just a thing, which is ACTUALLY hell? The lava zone, crash zone, or the *v o i d*
"Woah look it's one of the floating balls to."
- Bacon 2023
Haha all of the above :D Also that's a great quote.
And to think... the developers never intended for it to be a horror game.
Haha they clearly didn’t know what they were capable of :D
Nice new video 🎉
Yay :)
Woohoo, another video!
Wooo :)
December 2014? Nearly 10 years ago? Wow time really flies :(
Crazy! :)
*I Pray they make a sequel to both subnauticas with a real Horror focus and a basic but fun storyline and side quests to fill the game up as not just a survival game but a story filled world*
A horror-focused Subnautica would be so cool! :)
YEAHHHH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I LOVE THESE KINDS OF VIDEOS KEEP DOING THEM THEY ARE MY LIFE BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

Im very curious as to how you got this version, and if there is any hopes of me getting it as well, either way, love your videos.

I can barely find any documentation of lifepod 8 and the message recieved online as I was recently watching Mark’s play through and lifepod 8 was not with its beacon but lifepod 4 was. I got curious and did some research and there is not documentation of the message from lifepod 8 anywhere. Any info?
Ooh good question :) I'll look into it!

Hell-Hole looks kinda like fantasy location, like some kind of underwater Mordor)
Very accurate :D
I already am in that liminal hell hole when ever I go anywhere beyond the grassy plateaus
Haha fair :)
I'm glad I installed Subnautica on PS4 for free from that one time when PS gave out free games for COVID lockdown
Good move! :)

Ooh I'll look for it! :)
@@TheLastBacon It's listed on a few old maps. I believe it was removed before the hellhole was
