As Martin said, "G.V." is notoriously difficult to do live, "but this band can do it." This Band = Ann & Nancy Wilson fronting choristers (Harlem Boys Choir), instrumentalists/harmonies (Wondermints + Taylor Mills = The Brian Wilson Band), and an operatic baritone (Jubilant Sykes) for the Mike Love parts. It is not as transcendent as their "Stairway to Heaven", but it is truly impressive. The Wilson Sisters gave great tribute to the Wilson Brothers (Brian and deceased brothers, Dennis and Carl).

      No vocal gymnastics where a single syllable results in elaborate 'runs' that are so long and convoluted that you have forgotten what the words were, that they were singing?
      No frenetic dancers and complex choreography.
      And not a soppy milquetoast served lukewarm...was that Maroon 5?

    This will go down in history as one of the greatest performances in rock. Ann Wilson had complete control of that stage and of her instrument. The addition of the chorus was a fantastic surprise element. There was not a "miss" in this whole thing. I've watched it at least a dozen times since the original performance and it never ceases to give me goosebumps. The fact that she could sing this at 62, after years of touring and recording, and still nail every note while making it look easy speaks volumes about her vocal prowess. She's nearly unmatchable in music - regardless of age.

    The most beautiful thing about the whole deal is how she never tries to make it about herself, but she's always concentrating on being a messenger of the original song. But - in the process - the perfect delivery, the raw emotion, and her talent makes it hard to ignore how very few people can top this performance.
    Everyone should at least experience once this song. When the chorus comes in it's hard not to feel goosebumps all over.

    • @Magneticitist
      @Magneticitist Рік тому +26

      Honestly she sang it better IMO. It's subjective of course but the original lacked in timing and tone in certain places while Ann's lacked in the same emotional almost-crying lines. She not only 'corrected' some of the delivery but also did stay true to some of the small little details in the inflections and timing. Everything about this rendition is probably better than anything Led Zeppelin could have done live mainly because of how well Ann can belt out notes lol it's crazy. They are sort of harmonizing tracks like a chorus in the studio version, Plant runs out of breath live, and Ann at over 60 years old seems to dominate that vocally. It's not to put down Led Zeppelin to any degree but I look at it like taking a worldwide classic song and finding a way to dream team it into sounding better than ever before.

As great as they were/are , its only fitting to have a .masterpiece of a performance as their tribute, the people that came up and played some of Zeppelin songs all did a good job as well and starting with Jack Blacks introductions "better than the Beatles, better than the Stones. Deep Purple and other bands of that era. The words and music are complex with images and symbols. Their music is androgynous. Ann Wilson's vocals soar above the mass choir ! She really does rock!

      Her voice is strong as ever and she is well into her sixties here. What a performance!

      Too bad all the background noise detracts from the vocals.

    Heart talked about how they had only 1 rehearsal. Of all the covers of this song over the years, no one ...NO ONE...has brought it to light like Heart did. I shed tears every time I watch this video. It's so emotional seeing Plant tearing up and Page practically jumping out of his seat from excitement. Mesmerizing performance.

    I am a 60 year old burned out drummer. Just watched this 3 times in a row and teared up each time. Over 1000 dislikes?? Those people don't know what they were witnessing.

      There's purists that don't want anything changed. Others just want all covers to have the guitars and drums cranked up.

      The dislikes were probably because they showed Obama. They did a fantastic job.
