The taxi driver was referring to normal chicken kottu. But Cheese Chicken can be 800/-, and it depends on the size of the portion of some restaurants (one enough for 2)
Alos, mind that cheese is insanely expensive in Sri Lanka due to heavy import tax.

    Kotthu comes 2 portion sizes
    One Regular small size
And large size good for 2 to 3 people
The one you got is large portion
You can ask them to wrap the unused portion to take home
Next time when you order kotthu ask for Small portion not the Large

Only If you are going to "Take Away" food without eating, you have to order at the counter.
Otherwise in Sri Lankan local restaurants also you just have to go inside and take a seat in an empty table. Waiter will come and take your order.

Hi Ken. In some shops take away price is lower than dine in kottu price. In Kandy, maximum kottu price is lies around RS 600. It depends on the restaurant. If you goto small shop, the price is lower. Large and AC hotel charge a higher price than smaller restaurants. Try Nasigurang and Biriyani, String hopper Kottu and Lump rice. Those are very some of favorite foods in Sri Lanka.

Rice and curry is the main dish, but people love hoppers, pittu, , coconut rotti, string hoppers too for morning and evening meal and b"fast. My favorite will be boiled jack fruit with coconut Sambol with a curry which is not available in the country I live now. It is a heavy meal, we might put on weight if we eat it everyday. You have to try it.

I noticed you passed on other juices like woodapple juice. Try woodapple juice sometimes. Woodapple is a fruit thay ony grows in southasia. It's very tasty local drink. Also if since you are at Tangalle try "Kirala juice" there are many local shops sell them. Also Tamarind juice is also one of my favorite Sri Lankan juice. It's very tangy though.

That 3 wheel taxi driver is correct n Kottu is not Sri Lanka's staple food but a popular street food. Our staple food is Rice paired with curries. I too prefer rice since it is healthier.
You may try rice(bath), coconut sambol(pol sambola), dry fish tempered (karawala bedum) n dhall curry (parippu) together. Thank you n Enjoy Sri Lanka.

Kottu is really street food or fast food, Sri Lankan style. Home cooked food is always rice and curry, very often a really well balanced meal with several vegetable dished and freshly made sambol and mallum. There’s almost always something green and leafy. In comparison kottu has very few ingredients and not so healthy. Cheese is not really a local food at all, it is always imported and a sort of luxury food. There are other far more healthy options. Sometimes you might find stringhopper based kottu which I like far better, but full stringhopper meals are really really nice. And all the traditional breakfast foods are nice. See if someone can direct you to a place that does a proper stringhopper feast, and if possible take a friend too! Finish up with wattalappan dessert. There are lots of options as Sri Lanka has quite a diverse population, with good biriyani so from various Muslim communities, and also some excellent Chinese food too. It is a very foody sort of place, with good food that has been lovingly made, very time consumingly done sometimes. Instead of asking for a speciality food as where the best places to eat are, for local people. You will find the variety then, instead of getting such stereotyped food.

Calling a restaurant a "hotel" is pretty much a norm in srilanka.People in the past adopted words that were easier to remember and "hotel" is easier to pronounce than "restaurant"

Seems to me that Sri Lanka is not a cheap country to travel like indonesia, malaysia and thailand...it doesn't look expensive though...hotel, food...but still not too much...just its not cheap for cost of living there as i expected...😅

It looks very delicious, would love to try it when I visit Sri Lanka. 👍👍👍 Fully agree with you that the portion is too big, think I can only eat one third or one quarter of that plate of kottu. They should offer different serving sizes, such as large, medium and small to cater for the needs of different customers, instead of serving only one standard serving of extra large which does not make any sense. Rather surprise to see the fish curry, the colour of the curry gravy is completely different from the Indian style curry that we are so used to in Malaysia.

further up a comment says can get small portion . maybe because ken did not say small the guy must have thought he wants a large portion . i too love it and yes its too much for generally 1 person .

you can call a Tuktuk taxi from the App called Pickme and Uber. Its really cheaper than normal tuktuk and the vehicle is in best condition . They charge Tourist price because the app decides the price.

Ken, I don't think 800 is unfair price for a cheese chicken koththu. For Normal chicken koththu it may cost around 300 to 500. That was what tuk tuk driver told you. Anyway love your videos. ❤️❤️

A cheese kottu with chicken jst for Rs.800/-, ma man that is good. In colombo its 1000/-. Thanks to inflation everything is expensive now, back in 2019 a cheese kottu was jst 350/- or 400/-.

Ken, you take the tuktuk to town it cost you one way 300 rupee. Two way is already 600 rupee. And add yr kottu price of 500 rupee it's already 1100 rupee. So if you taken yr kottu near yr hotel at 800-1000 rupee it's the same cost. It's not cost saving for you bro.
