You correctly guess that Sri Lanka food is a bit like Indian food, the difference is they use lots of coconut and their cuisine feature lots of seafood. They also have their version of sambal, which use coconut instead of the shrimp paste (belacan) in Malaysian sambal. This is based on the food review channels that I watched on Sri Lanka previously (never been to Sri Lanka, but would like to). You can also watch some of the Sri Lanka videos on the youtube food review channel of Max McFarlin (before pandemic) and Luke Martin (during pandemic). Both channels featured the diverse food cultures in Sri Lanka and you can get better picture of their food. Looking forward to your video especially your roadtrip exploring the different parts of Sri Lanka. This will be the first time I am watching the travel vlogs (instead of food reviews).
Yes and no! I’ll explain why. 1. You get some foods that are similar to Indian food, however this is because the minority in srilanka are Hindus and their food and diet is very much related to Indian food (masala wada, flour roti, chapati, paper roti/thosa). 2. Then you have the Muslim/Malay minority, and their food is a mix of Indian, Malaysian, Pakistani and Arab cuisine (faluda, watalappan, biryani (srilankan biryani contains dried fruits and nuts like the Pakistani/middle eastern biryani). So, if you visit Colombo and try to eat street food, as a foreigner it’s easy to misunderstand and think srilankan cuisine is like Indian, or Pakistani (depending on where you get your cheap eat from) but this is wrong as it’s just street food and mostly these food joints are run by the tamil (Hindu) or Muslim. These joints are called ‘Saiwar kaade’ in local language. Very popular with school kids and local gents who like to have a drink and grab a bite. 3. The majority Sinhalese food has always been mostly a vegan based diet of jackfruit, red rice, coconut roti, red millet, a variety of pulses. A pure version of this diet is hard to find as most people eat meat now. However the food you would cook and offer a Buddhist monk would be the pure Sinhalese Buddhist diet. The best way to try an authentic srilankan (Sinhalese Buddhist) diet is on the full moon day. Most places will not serve meat or fish and if you are lucky, you’ll get to try dishes like lotus root, banana flower or breadfruit, etc… (I’d suggest mt.Lavinia hotel buffet on a poya/full moon day). 4. Sinhalese and Tamil Catholics, this is where you see some similarities in food with parts of Southern India. Reason being is the Portuguese influence. Other than the dishes even the calipso music is something you will see as a similarity. 5. Burgher (another minority) who are descendants of the Dutch, sometimes even the British/Scottish descendants are now identified as burgher minority. Food is mostly a cross between Sinhalese, Muslim/Malay, British and some Dutch dishes: fudge, Victoria sponge, coconut ice (pol toffee), Sunday roast (courses), Scandinavian rosette cookies (kokis) breudher (kugelhopf), lamprais. 6. Since late 70’s Chinese cuisine and Thai cuisine became so popular that we do have belachan, Chinese chili paste, kangkung, sago gula melaka (sau kanda). 7. Since late 90’s and post war, there’s been a lot of American food franchises making an appearance and you’d notice most American food chains that have nicely integrated. To sum it all up, the food is a lot more multicultural compared to Indian food. I know this as my neighbors (about 4-5 households) eat chapati, roti, rice and onion based curries every day although we live in UK and I’ve now known them for about 3+ years. Their regular household diet isn’t influenced by other countries or ethnicities. On the other hand it’s common for a Srilankan house hold (based in Colombo/suburbs) to eat hoppers for breakfast, rice with dhal, coconut sambol, kangkung, Chinese chili paste and chicken for lunch, a pizza for dinner, a watalappan for dessert and have a shot of Scottish whisky before going to bed! Best way to think of srilankan food is to think of it as a Singaporean food court where you can get anything and everything to fit anyones taste.
@@wannafreeze Thanks for the detail descriptions of Sri Lankan cuusine, very informative. The parts on 3, 4 & 5 are very eye opening. In part 6, you mentioned about, belacan (shrimp paste), kangkung, sago and gula melaka, those are comment food ingredients in Malaysia. Did not expect the same words to be used in Sri Lanka.
@@judyoh9008 I think since srilanka has always been a spot for mercenaries of the old era, there’s been so much foreign influence. Mostly in the coastal cities like Colombo and galle. South of Colombo down upto hambantota many nice beaches and small towns such as bentota , hikkadua, ahangula etc and also the great Galle , the Dutch fort. Up north of Colombo a place called nigambo offers nice beaches and nice tourist facilities. There is a lagoon in nigombo very nice. Kandy is another great town a hilly place . So my only taste of Sri Lanka was a brief stop at the main airport before a flight to the Maldives. I so wished I had organized my time to see the country but I was on work and did not have that freedom to my schedule. I too understand the excitement. I never went to any of the countries just for my own exploration but mainly to photograph travel stories or hotels. I look forward to seeing how you find the Sri Lankan experience.

So my only taste of Sri Lanka was a brief stop at the main airport before a flight to the Maldives. I so wished I had organized my time to see the country but I was on work and did not have that freedom to my schedule. I too understand the excitement. I am a photographer and have been to many countries for work. Landing somewhere new to me was thrilling. I never went to any of the countries just for my own exploration but mainly to photograph travel stories or hotels. I look forward to seeing how you find the Sri Lankan experience.
