I've been around PCs since the beginning, but I didn't realize Windows 1.0 was ever released. I do remember 2.0 coming out and being referred to as the "first usable" Windows in the Windows 3.x Era, but I was not aware that 1.0 ever made it to public release... learned something!

I’m 28 so I grew up with Windows 98 and mostly XP and I’m still in awe that people used computers with DOS. Windows 3.x must’ve been revolutionary to witness.
Plus MBs was were the storage size. I remember 1gb being big and by the time I was a teen 500gb was huge.
Now TBs are starting to not be enough. Crazy how storage sizes have changed.

@@nappeywappey I thought so, but this video made me wonder. I remember Windows 2.0 being basically a GUI menuing system running on top of DOS, and there were a few applications that ran on top of Windows 2.0, but like I mentioned, I was not aware of Windows 1.0 ever being released to the public, but it's possible that it actually was and I just never became aware of it. I was in the U.S. when personal computers first started to really catch on and do not remember Windows 1.0 ever even coming up in conversation and since I was around quite a few people who were on the bleeding edge I assumed I would have heard of it or seen it if it had been publicly available. I do still remember being told about what a mouse was in the early 1980s, but didn't fully get it at the time. It was a few years later that I got hands on experience with Windows 2.0 and first laid my hands on a mouse, because there was software the name of which I can't recall at the moment that was referred to as a "desktop publishing" that required Windows 2.0 and since I was the computer operations manager at an Insurance firm, it was my job to get it set up to use for the person who was going to be using it. Anyway, if Windows 1.0 was released to the public, I would expect it would have been in the U.S. so maybe it was and I just never became aware of it. Seeing how little software there was that used Windows 2.0 when I was working with it, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just more or less ignored by most users because of how little usefulness it actually brought to the table.

This brings back memories. There's an interesting thing to note about the Windows 7 upgrade editions. They were made to work with Vista, and, as we've seen in this video, they do. But a lot of people were coming from XP. Upgrade editions mentioned that they work with both, but this wasn't quite true in practice. Upgrade editions that detected XP would refuse to actually install 7 as an upgrade. You actually had to do a complete reinstall. And worse, you go through all that, then try to activate your upgrade license to find that it doesn't work because it didn't count nuking XP as an upgrade, even though you didn't have much choice in the matter.
You could actually have your cake and eat it though. Upgrade licenses have a trick to them that may or may not still work today. But back in the day, you do your steps with a fresh, non-upgrade install of 7. But when it's done, don't bother with activation yet. You reinstall again with your upgrade disc, picking the upgrade option! So you upgrade from Windows 7, to Windows 7. A waste of time, yes, but when the upgrade part is done, you can actually activate it.
How did we find this out back in the day? Lots of people went through this during the era, where lots of people were moving from XP to 7 and bought upgrade editions because they were cheaper and were coming from either XP or Vista. You went searching on the internet about it because you upgraded from XP to 7. Upgrade license said it works going from XP to 7. Why doesn't it work? And you find out that that was how to do it from others who had the same problem. Fun times.
Also, some stores didn't even have non-upgrade versions on sale. I recall never seeing them at my local Best Buy at the time. And besides, if you already had XP or Vista, why pay more money than you had to?
The final kicker is that this trick also works for fresh installs done with an upgrade edition with no previous version of Windows installed beforehand. Not sure if it ever actually stopped working.

Intel has used the Celeron name for their lower end processors made from 1998 all the way to 2019 and most likely the foreseeable future. The chip in that mini pc and the one in this 20 year old desktop are based on completely different generations of chips and chipsets so although they share the Celeron name, they are very different chips in terms of performance and compatibility.

I never got the Windows 2 versions to work.

Late to the show, but this was a ton of fun to watch. I was a bench tech that started out in 1993, so everything was still DOS/Win. We were cranking out the 'all new' mid-towers for offices - standard, under the desk layouts. 5.25 in the top slot, 3.5 in the second, optional Tape backup in the 3rd for several businesses. Our first Windows distro that we actually put on our machines and supported, was 3.11 for Workgroups with DOS 6.22. CD-ROMs came out and wow, we started putting them at the top, then the 5.25 and 3.5 below.
Then 1995 came around and changed everything. Slightly faster CD drives, 5.25 drives were no longer installed unless specifically asked for (which did still happen occasionally) and of course - Win 95! Then 98 and especially 98SE. When I left the build/repair/support and moved on to network field tech... we were building 3 GIGABYTE systems (huge drives man lol) with internal ZIP or LS120 drives being common addons. I remember the awe over the first 24x read and 4x write CD Burner we got in. So may memories this brought back! What a great video. Thank you! :)

A few notes if you have to install Windows 95 or 98 again. If you copy the files to the local disk like you did it speeds up the process drastically. Also to keep it from doing a system inspection and scandisk you can do setup /ie /is /iv Windows 98 SE is what introduced the gradient, and a number of other innovative things. If you do have to do another upgrade process video I would recommend getting speakers to work on it. The chunky sounds from the early operating systems, and the amount of effort placed in the intro videos for the operating systems were amazing. I enjoyed the video, but it did seem that most of it was telling us to check out the VM variant of the same because it was more successful.

Thx for the interesting video. You'll almost certainly get better functionality if you fully update all versions prior to upgrade. For example, when going from Vista to Win7 I used to have to install all the Vista updates from Windows Update AFTER installing SP1, followed by SP2, followed by all remaining updates. Similarly, going from 7 to 8 or 10 requires SP1 and all updates. It's a pain, but over the years I got it to more or less a fixed routine, though some systems just refuse to play ball.

Plus OS/2 was really an IBM OS Microsoft was only really there to help with DOS integration and to have some sort of decent GUI for DOS once windows 1.0 hit the scene Microsoft stopped active development for it as soon as windows 1.3 came out. I find it pretty interesting that backwards compatibility actually increased over time!
My best guess is there is two reasons, one is that up until Windows XP, most businesses just kept using older OS's, but XP was the first time they did a major upgrade (and Microsoft really pushed for this)
The other reason is probably the switch to NT (funnily enough), since Microsoft developed the NTVDM and probably just went all in with compatibility and testing.

In a lot of those old programs the acceptable DOS versions were determined by a "ver" command (or evuivalent) and the result compared to text in a setup CFG file. In other words, you could mess with the config file to tweak it so it worked on DOS versions that were later than the program. Ahhh, the days before security was an issue.

You can also easily upgrade the ram since it was that uncommon at the time to have 1 to 2 GB. It’s not exactly the same as using the same PC, but if you can use the same motherboard and just change the CPU, that would be better than nothing.

You can actually use a PS/2 mouse in Windows 1.0 by replacing MOUSE.DRV on the setup disk with the Windows 2.0 version. During installation, you can select the Microsoft Mouse option for PS/2 mouse support.
Also, that garbage that appeared on the screen when you first started Windows 1.0 was likely caused by an incompatibility with the DOS version you were running. This can also be fixed with the command "SETVER C:\WINDOWS\WIN100.BIN 3.34".
I've tested both patches in MS-DOS 6.22 and it works perfectly.

It's a huge bit late but I want to share a detail I noticed about the MS-DOS Executive (MSDOS.EXE). At 41:37 and 57:54, when you clicked on Properties for MSDOS.EXE, it showed a mere 1 byte of size, which means the EXE file didn't contain the original contents. It might have been damaged somewhere between the Windows 95 and Windows Me upgrade.
That must have been why the error message was "Not a valid Win32 application". If it was the correct EXE, it might crash or trigger a compatibility notice, but definitely not the valid Win32 application notice.

Best way to validate if a program is from Windows 1/2/3, 95, etc. is not to use the "About" option but in fact to open the file properties dialog and see what version stamp is embedded in the file. In Windows 95 they started embedding versioning info in the metadata.
You're correct that programs will claim they're part of Windows 98 in the "About" dialog even when they're not because those programs are using Windows Common UI (which started in Windows 95).

As for the memory, Vista would be okay with the 512MiB OP's machine had, but 7 *should* need at least 1 GiB (at least Microsoft said that).
