I always liked how older versions of windows allowed you to customize the colors of so many parts of the UI. To do that on Windows 10 you gotta go into high contrast mode, and even then you gotta edit your saved theme file in a text editor to change titlebar colors because high contrast mode doesn't let you do that through the settings panel. Must be an oversight. One of my themes is based off the Fallout 3 Pipboy.

Especially the older versions can be used by anybody these days: Virtual machine on and, although illegal, you'll find working serial codes for any windows up to Windows XP. It's good for testing old software, that don't run natively on Windows 10 anymore. And a virtual machine is not a security hazard, as if it would get corrupted by a virus, you just restore the backup of the fresh installed VM.

Mehryar Jafari The trouble with NT 3.1 is that it simply has no drivers to read from a typical IDE CD-ROM during setup, so no known switches resolve this, unfortunately. Thankfully DOS6 has such drivers, so that’s the recommended approach on typical desktop PCs.

In the other video, it was the 3.0 version of Reversi that kept working in future versions of Windows.

  • @jptrx

Well, like someone has already commented over here I'd fully update Win XP at first. SP3 should be enough. Then I'd also use most recent official install media for Vista so that'd be SP2 one if I'm correct. If these steps don't help then I'd have a look at the event viewer and see what kind of errors it gives and possibly work things forward from there if possible.

If I do recall, Vista was extremely bad when trying to upgrade from XP. I had to ton of problems with Vista on my PC back in the day, both during install as well as just using Vista, so much so I downgraded by main PC back to XP and just ran Vista on a laptop for general usage. I only upgraded the XP PC when 7 came out. Might be an idea, but try installing XP SP 3 first then Vista. I know SP3 came out after Vista released, but it may include additional drivers and fixes that may get the Vista upgrade to work. I could be entirely wrong, but there's nothing to lose (unless the upgrade to SP3 decides to nuke your HDD first).

Ah Windows 2000. I miss that operating system. Other than the constant service pack patches, it was probably among Microsoft's best operating systems. Also, I think Vista was actually a pretty good OS, everybody shits on it but if you bought a machine intended for it and had hardware that was compatible out of the box, it was perfectly serviceable. What killed it was the incompatibility of hardware and software with XP, but everyone forgets XP was just as incompatible with ME when it was first released, but we just got so used to XP just working with everything, I think people got spoiled.

Hi Michael. I remember doing these upgrades, but not all at once, rather as the new OS became available. The problem that I believe that you're having here to upgrade to Windows Vista was a very common but specific problem regarding Vista. Windows Vista required several hardware changes that I don't think your Gateway computer would have. In fact, the last hardware upgrades that I am aware of for Gateway stopped at Windows 2000, but were not essential, so your build simply bypassed them as you upgraded through Windows XP. One other specific issue with Vista was that if you had hardware attached, i.e. a printer, it had to be a printer designed SPECIFICALLY to handle Windows Vista, otherwise it wouldn't work. I had to buy a brand new printer (my wife, at the time, was not pleased with that) so that I could print off the Vista box.

To be quite honest, you could try to brut force installation with the cmd during installation. Hard copy the files onto the file system replacing everything onto winNT folder, so you could keep your directory as well.
During GUI installer, shift f10 brings up the command prompt. After that just flash the windows via DISM /apply-image and create an MBR manually using regedit in sources - i did that with windows 10, but i am not sure if vista can do that.
You could also try doing a second partition and try installing vista there, afterward just merging vista files with live linux.

  • @dungeonseeker3087
    @dungeonseeker3087 4 роки тому +5

The upgrade issue for Vista was probably because you were running the installer from inside XP instead of booting from the disc and choosing upgrade. It was 100% NOT because of the Windows folder name, you can install Windows in a folder called macOS if you want, it doesn't care. My best guess is it was the profile folder causing the issue, because you ran the installer over Windows XP explorer would still be running in the background and if Vista was trying to fix the folder structure it would be getting file in use errors from your account folder (as you're logged in), booting from the disc would stop this problem from happening. Note it wasn't clear if you got that error before a reboot happened or afterwards, if it was after a reboot then my theory is wrong.

Michael, what if you use Windows Vista Service Pack 2 installation package, as it seems that you try to install initial version of Windows Vista (without Service Packs). And by the way, isn’t it a bad idea to install to install Vista from the desktop, as the installation may attempt to move your personal files from WINNT folder to Users folder and the installation may encounter problems?

I did a similar thing on my main PC (a Core 2 Quad Q6600), just another time period, and I actually used that PC for years. I installed 32-bit Vista around 2008, then I upgraded it to Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1, then various builds of Windows 10. In the meantime I upgraded the HDD, GPU and RAM a number of times. But at some point it just refused to upgrade to a newer build of Windows 10, no matter what I tried and the error message was similarly vague. A new (64-bit this time) installation of Windows 10 worked without an issue.

Q6600 is a 64-bit CPU, so I could've installed 64-bit Vista back in 2008, but I chose 32-bit instead cause I had only 1 GB RAM or so. But nowadays some new apps are 64-bit only so it's better to use a 64-bit OS if you can.

"back in the day", my supervisor insisted on us being early adopters of NT4, upgrading our (stable, working) 3.51 department servers over the weekend. Let me tell you that we were rolling back by late sunday to avoid catastrophy, and eventually upgraded once the first service pack was released. Upgrading from sp3 to sp6 was a similar headache, including rollbacks/re-installs, until sp6a was released: she never listened to the people getting paid to know that stuff, but to marketing. (probably cost the company a couple hundred grand in overtime over the years.)
Eventually I quit, and focused on the then-rising Linux I'm stuck with since :)
I'm still getting PTSD levels of heartburn watching this, though, it hurt so much.
