My current OS is Windows 8.1 Professional made to look almost exactly like Vista including Aero. (I can easily make it look like 7 as well.) None of 8.1's tablet BS, but I still get the little nice features of 8.1 such as the improved Task Manager.
And that will probably be the last Windows OS I will ever daily drive. I already have MX Linux installed on the desktop. When 8.1 gets too old, it's gonna be Linux now from here on out.
It really sucks because I used to love Windows. I have full retail copies of every version from 2000 Professional up to 8.1 Pro, and some Windows 10 keys, but Windows 10 sucked, and Microsoft wants to make it even worse with 11, so whatever... It's sad but time stops for no man I guess.

I built a new computer with 8 GB of ram (4 sticks of 2 GB each) and loaded a brand new Vista license with the expectation that it would be able to use all 8 GB of RAM. It did in fact recognize it, but Vista crashed 2-3 times a day. It was extremely frustrating with blue screen errors that gave me little clue as to why. Finally, I removed all but one stick of RAM leave 2 GB and the system was stable from then on out. Sadly though, I was no better off than Windows XP with the 2 GB of RAM. -------- Finally, Windows 7 was released. With Windows 7, I put all of the exact same sticks of RAM back in the machine and the same hardware with Windows 7 was solid as a rock. That was my first Windows OS that truly worked with large amounts of RAM and didn't randomly crash throughout the day. Vista was a scam and Microsoft should have given away Windows 7 for free to all the folks that who had previously bought Vista.

I'm from China. I got my first personal laptop in year 2007, a Dell Inspiron 1520 that came with Vista preinstalled. Throughout my university years I don't remember it had crashed for even once (although I was in transition to Linux at the same time). Most of my classmates got their first computers in university and many of them were intrigued by the fresh Aero look of Vista and they craved for laptops that could run Vista smoothly, and unfortunately not many of the affordable laptops were able to. I was fortunate enough to get a laptop with good performance, and Vista had not disappointed me.

It's a pity that SSD's weren't yet a thing in 2007. The speed and performance advantage would have done a lot to ease the perception of Vista. It really was the 1st OS that made you realise just how bad mechanical drives were at running a complex OS performance wise. Vista also introduced a whole bunch of tech changes and improvements still used today.

  • @Eyetrauma

There’s something kinda charming about this era of MS packaging, both the Vista boxes and the Office ones have a really bulky/solid feel to them. I was on MS Insiders before Vista launched and submitted some bug reports. Ended up getting a copy of Ultimate as a gift, pretty neat.
I was one of those weirdos that really liked XP 64 so when they announced a ‘first-class’ 64 bit OS I got super excited. As you can imagine, with hardware that could take advantage of it I had no problems with being ‘Vista capable.’ IMO the problem people described with Vista (asking underpowered PCs to run it) kinda continues. Just recently my mom was looking to buy a new (new!) laptop that was reasonably spec’ed yet had a 5400 rpm hdd? In 2021? Like what?

Not really .I had a Vista capable laptop and the requirements advertised my laptop as it being capable - and Toshiba realised a BIOS update for vista.
Issue was that on day one it was a mess. Microsoft had to release so many updates for it in the first year alone because of the backlash, and because it actually had issues.

    • @Bone_Rattler
      @Bone_Rattler 2 роки тому +10

@@HughesyTech "Vista Capable" branding is the issue here. "Vista Capable" actually meant it was just windows xp aimed hardware that they THOUGHT could run Vista. Because microsoft's "Minimum specs" weren't really truthful. And the drivers for said hardware (made by hardware manufacturers) were often lazy quick jobs trying to make it run on Vista. Which is what Windows Updates actually fixed over time with microsoft releasing their own vista drivers for them.
All in all it's very sucky. But the bigger problem wasn't the OS itself. It was bad (maybe even malicious, with the distinction between "Vista Capable" and "Made for Vista") marketing and poor support. I mean. Windows 7 was literally just a reskinned Vista with updates applied, but by the time that came out, hardware had caught up to the requirements of running it. So that did well.

I used Vista when I was young, we used to have an old pc given to us with Windows 98 and when we finally bought a brand new machine in 2007 it had vista. It was great and I never understood why people hated it. I think the biggest issue was that it required much more powerful machines than XP and people tried running it on under powered hardware and hated it because it ran poorly, but on appropriate machines it worked just fine.

I did something like this and basically found Windows 7 to be Vista SP3. Windows Vista with SP2 and all the updates on good hardware, ran great, had the most beautiful windows UI of all time and had a ton of great built-in apps like macOS. Unfortunately they dropped most of them in Windows 7 and so in some ways I found Windows Vista to be better and continued to use it for years until I eventually switched to macOS and never looked back to windows.

14:30 I always had a great experience with Vista, I’m 90% sure that’s because my dad got a beefy computer so he could run AutoCad for his job, which most likely brute forced through a lot of issues, but to me, windows 7 always seemed like a re release of vista with some upgrades and they gave some time for the hardware to catch up to what they were trying to achieve. Not exactly. Windows 7 did _look_ like a slightly tweaked Vista, with a better UAC implementation. But, under the hood, the codebase had been cleaned up considerably as part of the MinWin project. This began with Windows Vista, as the core team had decided there was too much inter-layer dependency in the Windows codebase. But that detangling effort occurred over the course of development for Vista, Server 2008, and into Windows 7.

I think the bad reputation of Vista may be related to hardware transition. Any computer with a single CPU and 512 MB memory was able to run XP, but for Windows Vista 2 cores and 2 GB of ram were the unofficial requirements for a desktop usage, more for gaming.
In the times when Windows 7 was released, everybody already had 2 or 4 cores CPU with many GB of memory, this probably explains why nobody critizied its performance.

Edit: I went out and bought it day one and had no issues.

Not really .I had a Vista capable laptop and the requirements advertised my laptop as it being capable - and Toshiba realised a BIOS update for vista. Celeron 1.4Ghz with 512mb ram. Graphics card supported Aero fully.
Issue was that on day one it was a mess. Microsoft had to release so many updates for it in the first year alone because of the backlash, and because it actually had issues.

I was 10-ish when my family got a Vista PC and I rember it with nostalgia now. The startup sound specially, ahh those were simpler times

I loved Windows Vista aesthetics. The OS was 2 years ahead of time. When Vista was introduced, most PCs were running 1 or 2GB RAM and single core CPU's. By the time of Vista SP2, dual core CPU's and 2 and 4 GB RAM was becoming the standard. The laptop I got in 2008 - an HP with Turion 64 X2 TL-60 and 2 GB RAM which I later upgraded to 4 GB *never* crashed on me.

I know Vista gets a lot of negative feedback, but I went from Windows 2000 to Vista and it was amazing. The sleek UI, the aero stuff, the neat visuals and all that. Just felt so futuristic and all that. I was finally using the latest tech.

I used Vista on a VM to see it (i had Aero), and I can say that it was, one of the Best Windows Experiences, if it wasn't the best
The tons of features we got in Vista is the right meaning of new Windows release, it camed with new kernel, unlike what Microsoft call it "Windows 11"

I never really got the negative hype surrounding Vista. When I got my first Vista machine, I loved it. The aesthetic remains a favourite.

Windows Vista was (at the time) my first modern version of windows on my first modern laptop (prior I was using 98se on my dad's old work laptop). Vista really got me into computer hardware as upgrading my Compaq Presario f700 from 1 to 2gb of ram made it so much more usable. I feel like if Vista never happened and Microsoft jumped straight from XP to 7, 7 would have the same reputation that Vista got, as by the time 7 rolled around, hardware manufactures and software developers were used to working with Vista, so the shift went a lot smoother

Damn the Vista Aero UI was the "sport car" of Microsoft desktop environments

I love Vista even with all the hate that people had for it. It's one of my favorites. Once again I feel the reason for all the hate was that it was just ahead of its time. Great Video

I remember getting a brand new laptop that came with Vista. And like you said so many times in the video from all the negativity I heard I was almost ready to just wipe it and put XP on it right away. But I gave it a chance and it was good for several years for me. Remember the one main thing that people were complaining about was the UAC prompts. Microsoft gave it super duper enhanced security. People were like "every single thing I click on I have to say yes to accept it". LoL

I remember using Vista when I was young on my dad's laptop and it had no problems at all. I dont remember much because I was like 4 years old. I know it sounds crazy but I really used it at that age and it was so cool with the aero theme and stuff. Later when I was 6-7 the laptop got upgraded to Windows 7. It was still good but even to this day I miss Vista. I'm really glad I didn't know the bad stuff for Vista and enjoyed the best childhood. The laptop is still alive and when I look at the specs it was too good for its time. I dont remember every spec but it was pretty good. Now its slow as heck and cant open Chrome fast. Until the end of 2019 I used this laptop and always thought it was the best pc. Then my parents finally had enough money to buy a new laptop which Im using to this day. It's a Win10 laptop but I still want to downgrade to Vista or Win7 because of the memories. All that aside the main problem of Vista was its timing. It could be better at marketing even more than Win7. Thanks if you read the whole thing! My childhood matters a lot for me and I just wanted to share my opinion. :)
