I like free stuff. Some people wouldn't use this stuff for fear of diseases or because it's too dirty. It's nothing some cleaning and maybe bleaching won't take care of. - Розваги
You can always buy new equipment, but what you can't buy is bee smell. If you can get past the nastiness of old , neglected, and down right funky, bee hives, and don't mind getting a little bit nasty yourself, you've got for yourself some wooden gold.
+Jeff Horchoff That's a fact. I've been building my swarm traps out of old brood boxes for that very reason.
I know this is old and the chances of you seeing this is slim to none.. but random thought.. Wouldn't dumping some slum gum from melting down wax on to the inside of a brand new hive and letting it soak in help to get some of that bee smell?
Like I said, just a random thought, I'm just a fan and watch and hopefully learn something, and because I know nothing, I can come up with some absolute outrageous off the cuff thoughts and ideas.
Some of them even work.. Example.. I was thinking.. Why don't they have a bee vac where you can just put the hive on top, and let the bees walk up in to it.. A few days later, I see a vid of yours with that exact idea brought to life.
Hu-uh I thought.. I guess that wasn't such a dumb idea I had after all, lol.
That's exactly how I got started with beekeeping. Neighbor got his house foreclosed and abandoned it. He left an old rotted beehive setup in the yard. I took it home, pressure cleaned it, ordered more stuff and put a colony in there. Good memories.
Someone else was telling me they started this year off hives left at a foreclosed property. Nothing like free. :)
@@628DirtRooster Yep! I got me 30 plastic frames out of the deal. The boxes were a bit too rotted (were knocked down on the ground) so I had to get new ones. I eventually switched to wood frames. I guess destiny had my number.
I only bought 1 hive body and ended up with over 70 hives people giving me stuff and real estate agents call come get these bee hives off this farm we are auctioning off -- no one come to a farm auction to buy bee hives -- but if you see them ask the Auctioneer if he is selling them -- usually no competitor to bid against you so you set the price -- money is all they want .
+james wilson Holy smokes! That's a great way to get them.
628DirtRooster yeah got some hives loaded with 4 or 5 supers of honey each, queens, Had to make 3 trips once to haul all the hive paid $25. for each one 22 hives and I got the extractor , boxes of wax and tons of flower seeds for less than $600.
Thank You. very much appreciated.
I Love that 🎉 I am getting some Sanford and son frames also 😁 it will cut down on start up cost. And give the new hives a lived in before scent. I did soak them in ACV to kill any mold or pest eggs.
man those are fantastic lookin frames for swarm traps
My great mentor just gave me 4 old crappy boxes, one needs repaired. He also gave m a pile of crappy old frames he hasn't gotten around to ever cleaning and fixing after a wax moth infestation. I have been in my glory fixing and cleaning all this stuff. Bought some plastic foundations and I will running fishing line through some... whatever, I LOVE free stuff!!!
I have about 50 free frames, with some work and foundations to add!!
This stuff is very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure. :)
Thanks! Very interesting video.
"If it's free it's for me" J.M.
You should do a video on all the stuff you have like extra boxes just to see what you have collected over the years
Been told that ten ten ten is how you price used equipment. Ten for the box if it's in decent shape, ten for the frames, and ten for foundations if they're ok to use. That's a bit high imo but I'm not arguing.
Never thought of it that way but that seems like a decent way to price it.
would this be a thing you could add to a healthy hive, and let them clean it off? Mostly thinking of the queen excluder/super.
To some degree but some of it would need to be at least scraped clean
My first boxes look a lot worse, but 1/2 of the frames where ok to use.
The first boxes served me well to make copies of them and for me to make new ones.
Awesome!!!..If you took the bottoms off those frames and spun 'em around..would they hold plastic type foundations? (I thought I saw slots)
They will hold foundations.
That looked like a metal queen excluder.
It was indeed. :)
I love free stuff too. I would have liked to see how you did the clean up. Did you put out a vid for that?
I ended up giving all of it to a friend and I think he boiled or heated everything in a 55 gallon drum full of water and then scraped it clean while everything was soft.
I'm a new beekeeper and I'm looking for an explanation on why do bees form a ball just outside of the entrance? are they looking for a new home? or poor ventilation?
Anxious about my bees..
Genevieve E I watched your video. That is called bearding. They aren't trying to swarm. They do this on hot and humid days. Try using a vented inner cover or just prop the back edge if your lid up about 1/8 of an inch.
how is your beekeeping going? i hope you are still enjoying it!
Free is always worth the time to repair.
great
You ain't never lie! Lol
02:00 "YOU WERE WARNED" in the background lol
DOVE tailed at that
How do I even start. Love it.
Thanks so much!
you were warned!???
Ha! Yeah, had people stealing from me and I set up some "situations" for them.
Stealing from a smart man who keeps bees is just asking for it, love this.
He reminds me of John Goodman,
yeah yeah yeah... bee bee bee... LOL, I LIKED the car hood message better than anything!!
TJ
Lol, I didn't even realize that was in the back ground. I had to watch the video again to see what you were talking about.
+628DirtRooster why does that hood say YOU WERE WARNED? 1:46
Chris Phillippo Because you have to pass "no trespassing" and "smile you're on camera" signs to get to that point and if you drive that far back you are probably going to be buying new tires. Got tired of worrying about people stealing and getting away scott free.
Cool vid my friend!:)
Thanks Joe
I'm interested in beekeeping more to promote honeybees than to get honey. Every year in February / early March the local county fairground has beekeeping classes, and I'm always tempted to go. However, the area I'd consider using is inside the wife's dog agility training area, and she says "No bees that close to the dogs." There are places inside the fence that I think are far enough away that the human/dog/bee interaction would be almost zero, but that's not a battle I feel like having -- Momma happy, everyone happy, etc.
Would a feeder like you showed in another video "bee" less of a possible annoyance to the dog training activity? Setting up a sugar water feeder would be easy in a far corner, and that would help the poor fellers out, too -- but if it were just as busy as a hive box, then that would be no good either. Would it be massed with bees, or just a few coming and going all the time?
Thanks for putting up your videos, I really enjoy them.
It really depends on what's in bloom as far as activity on the feeder. If nothing is blooming they'll be on it like women on a black Friday sale at Belk. If something good is blooming they'll almost completely ignore the feeder. If you really want to do beekeeping and the wife won't budge you can set up at someone else's property. We have out yards all over where people let us put bees free of charge. So many people love having bees especially if they have a garden. I'm going to look at another guys place today. Even our garbage man stopped this week to let us know he has three acres we can put bees on if we need the spot. He's a little far away but it's that easy to find spots.
Would you ever consider using something like this for sterilizing old hives? I wonder if they still smell enough to be good for swarms after. Homemade Steam Wax Extractor And Hive Sterilizer - UA-cam
Still good for traps.
I'm Jealous, I'm keeping an eye out for free be's, no pun intended.
They're out there.
Donald. I get paid high dollar for removing bees from people's homes. It's how I finance the whole shebang which is expensive by the way.
Ask around and you'll find a cutout guy who would like some help in exchange for you getting the bees. That's how I get bees. Paying for them is for suckers. ;)
What's a Dirt Rooster any way.
Dirt bike. 1997 Honda XR600r with a 628 big bore kit.
''YOU WERE WARNED'' on a hood in the back there? hahahha why?
+xRedster People had been trespassing and stealing stuff so I put up no trespassing signs and prepared some surprises.
Nasty man, nasty
Am I the only one who saw a mouse run out at 2:55?
Man it looked like it. That was some of that old moth webbed comb falling out. I had to watch a couple of times to see. LOL
"pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet" "pry any of them out yet"
lol i know this is a 4 year old comment...
