Failing Bees In A Dying Mississippi Town

- Photos at the end of this video are from several towns in Mississippi including Bassfield, Columbia, Clarksdale, Gulfport and others.
This honey bee hive removal was done on August eighth 2023. I had a home for these bees to go to originally but since one hive was queenless at the time of removal and the other rolled their queen during the removal, I just took them home and combined them with a couple of my colonies. My friend who was supposed to get them didn't have access to a replacement queen and In August I don't turn loose of any of mine so there was no sense in dropping them off at his place. This coming spring I'll help him catch a swarm.
It is true that I took two samples of bees from that left side colony to test for mites and neither sample had any mites. That was not what I expected to find on a weaker looking colony.
I repaired the interior wall as well as the rotten trim around the outside of the window in order to prevent a reinfestation.
On my return trip home that evening I passed through Columbia, MS and got Chinese food which is where I took that night shot of the take-out restaurant.

Amazing storyteller.
I removed Bees for one year, but had such a hard time giving them away and keeping them alive. It was so hot in Texas. I got a little disappointed I lost so many colonies.
You wouldn’t have any trouble giving them away to me but I’m all the way in Kentucky
Most people don't realize everything about the cut out business is tough.
@@loucilehall9281 I don't know what part of Texas Ray96744 lives in but where I live in Texas most of the cut outs and swarms I've done have Africanized genetics. You may not want them.
Randy I just have to say it is great to watch a construction minded beekeeper, it's nice to see.👍You make most cut outs look easy. Blessed Days...
It's all in the edit. lol

I love your videos, the bees, the impressions, your social view - thx. from Germany.
Thanks so much Peter. Germany was my favorite vacation abroad.
Good idea, consolidating the colonies. Poor little queen, sad she didn't make it, but such is the life in a bee colony. And as always, excellent photography, I really feel like I'm right there with you, driving through these little towns. Thank you, Randy!
Love your videos. I have learned so much about cutouts and hive keeping from watching you, Mr. Ed and Mike Barry that if I ever get into bees I would have a leg up! I hope your daddy’s doing ok. I miss seeing him in your posts. Thanks for sharing and letting me tag along :)
I'm like Winnie the Pooh bear....I love honey and can't drink tea without it 😊 love the pictures and prayers for your Dad for fast recovery and hope to see him soon in the videos 😊 God bless 🙏❤️
Great video. I love how quiet it is out in the country. I would say the whole building is putting off a heat signature with the heat advisory in place. Lol!!!
If the property wasn't in such a rundown town it would be a nice place to have.
Thank you Randy. Always good to see you, bees And the backstreets of America. Hope you’re warm today stay safe love watching ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Rolling those back roads with a camera is my favorite.
@@628DirtRooster we profit from your favorite!!
98 degrees in a shed + bee's sting's , cant wait for spring.🤣
It hit 100 degrees with 107 heat index
I think that second hive might be the prettiest you have every revealed! What a hive!!!
I wish it had been full of bees like the first one.
Hey Randy. Hear you were listening to Castle Hives. 😅
My voice is soothing and puts the bees into a trance. . . LOL
I was trying to learn something before I got into these bees. I hadn’t done a cut out in a few weeks and had forgot a lot. 😝
really enjoy the pics at the end
Thanks Thomas
I'm always looking for your videos You make them So interesting And I love all the pictures at the end. Thanks Have a great day!😀
Working on my movie making skills. haha
Totally chill. No wonder you are so loved.
You made me miss my home state even more with your pictures! My mom’s side of the family is from Bassfield, Improve, Foxworth, Columbia, and Lumberton area.
I’m from Hattiesburg, but been in Texas (Houston) for 49 years.
Oh wow! Small world.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
It’s a compulsion. 😁
Hey Randy,ya'll are 🥶 or 🥵 down there, just like us in May!
I love how you leave everything nice and clean🎉.
Very pretty place, the man did a nice job when he was ablebodied 👍.
Pretty much a broke down town, nice work on the photos!
JO JO IN VT 💞
I would’ve only uncovered one at a time specially, if you’re in the darth. But because you have them both open, I would take the larger one.
Money shot right at the beginning...wow. Or just a tease....I would have taken the same one you did first. I figure leave the healthy colony for last so they spend less time in a vacuum or temp box being less disrupted. Plus the big one being down, you could rip and roar thru that one......Well, now we see the dead queen and the drama, plans have changed...Some of your best photos of late of that town!! Nice!!
Very good point about reducing stress time on the best colony.
Teaser at the beginning so you know there’s something good coming.
Thank you for small town America photos. I just read your reply about new comb and no queens. Did they make a new one, or did they get a transplanted queen?
They were combined with other colonies.
Great pics & music.
I loved this video and the beautiful peek into that small country town.❤
Love your work.
Thanks Patrick
That colony on the left was huge, well at least the comb they had. How often do they ball the Queen?
It’s super rare for them to ball a queen during a cut out. I’ve probably only seen it happen three or four times.
My pleasure. Thanks for riding along with us.
Seeing Your videos of those little towns brings back memories of driving all around exploring southern Mississippi when stationed at Kessler AFB in 1961,62 . I thought there was dodidly squat there then , Now there" Aint SHITE" !!
You got to see south MS in it's wilder days.
I just love those still shots at the end, really nice touch and the appropriate music selection, too! The bee part weren't too bad as well! lol
😅 He says "the light is in my eyes" with his hat turned around backwards! Just pickin at you Randy! Great video!
Nobody seems to know why my hat is backwards. LOL Guess I’ll have to do another video.
@@628DirtRooster Fred Durst fan?
You put it on backwards to keep the Bees from going under the front an out of your face .
The first two-billed cap (front and back) coming to the merch shop soon.
Randy, I hope you and your family are doing good. I always look forward to your still pictures at the end of your videos.
Thank you Mr. Don. We’re doing great. Everyone is healthy. Even my dad is halfway back to normal except he can’t walk or drive.
We missed you at the expo. I hope you’re having a good start to 2024.
As much as I enjoy your hive removal videos, the still photos at the end are a true lagniappe!
i do love your guitar music , and have been watching your beekeeping for a while now , cheers , Gary ..
Thanks Gary. Y’all have a blessed weekend
Who are the guitar artists that you use please, best regards, from Gary ,from 3 miles west of Stonehenge
I love watching your videos. I’ve only been beekeeping for less than a year.
But if I had done it, I would’ve thought you would have to complete the first one that you opened.
Then open the second one and captured them while keeping them separated.
Very good call :)
One that looked queenless. No queen then combine the bees.
I really enjoy the photos at the end of the video, wonderful work !!
Liked the music
Your videos are always good but I really enjoy the pictures at the end
Glad you like them!
Those pictures tell so many stories.
Lovely.❤
Those photos you shared at the end are beautiful! Lovely work!
Glad you like them!
Both my bee hives absconded in November leaving both hives full of honey they are being robbed out today.
I would probably have removed the biggest first if was queenless. You said in your video as I was typing that you were going to combine. My thoughts we're wondering if you could
I love it when people wearing a brimed hat backwards try to block the sun with their hand.
😅
I guess I'll have to do a video for you explaining why.
I'll be watchin' for it. @@628DirtRooster
Awesome video. I look forward to all your videos. When a new one comes out i know its gonna be a good day lol. Keep up the good work
I grew up in Moss Point.... lived across the gulf toward NO... really miss it but its just to damn hot and humid for me.
Great video as always and you seem to be taking things up a notch or two. I would think you made the right decision on which hive to remove first, I have schooled myself watching you so that just makes since. I don't think I could take heat like that anymore though, the tune you had playing at first reminded me of 'The Way' by Fastball and seemed fitting for how hot it was! Your photography always takes me back to when times were more simple, and the worries were too. Thanks for sharing the great video!
Reminds me of some of Pecos Hank's tunes....
Randy, crazy warm here too. Sadly there are to many small town NAFTA ghosts.
I agree with you on all spec's
Thank you for the confidence Sandie
Randy, love the ending again.
At least the hives had a couple of queen cells to work with. Did you have to bring in a queen?
Have a great day.
I love what you do and I watch just about all of your videos even watch the other guys mainly you and Mr. Ed I just wish I could’ve got into it back when I was younger before I started having Heath issues
Thanks for sharing! Sounds like Brian from Castle hives has a follower.
LOL Catching up listening to videos while I ride.
My hometown in Canada is a ghost town...but it deserved to be. A few nasty people with personality issues tried to overlord everyone so people just left, there are many many other towns close by. The worst one now is the mayor of a whole maybe 20 people and even less livable houses. She always wanted to own the town, now she's welcome to it, there isn't 1 store left and not even a post office. Hope you're happy Melba, lol, took you 50 years but you got your town and no one cares and never did!!
Other dying towns make me feel sad, especially in beautiful places. I don't know why it is that the most beautiful places just get pounded on by weather.
I have one of those "varroa test bottles" in my kitchen used for storing canned beetroot after opening just got it at the supermarket. Pretty funny case of re-labeling there.
Those are some very calm bees!
Most around here are Italian which are pretty docile.
I would removr the one without the mites first, so as to keep it clean.
That's a great idea!
Dear 628DR…….Eventually the time comes when we do not go into the woods alone…..we leave that to the bears. So don’t go alone into the woods or I will have to ground you….and now you know how hard it is to get up from that……your fan mother…..mraz
That cut out seemed easier. Than some of the ones I've watched you do.
It sure wasn't terrible..
This angle of the camera... I thought "Wait, he is taller than this" but then I understood the camera was placed in a high spot. Interesting optical illusion
The low mite counts are really interesting. Do you keep track of all of the counts? Enjoyed the photos. Rural Americana. Great video. Take care.
I do keep track but there isn’t much variation.
That's one cool shot of the moon😂
I got that one close to home.
I agree do the smaller hive, and consolidate.
I would have done the same....except I would have put the wood back up on the 'good' hive.
Having them both open might make them more sustainable to robbing.
You make good videos...all your little cutaways, the music, just YOU...good stuff!
I wouldn't merge them...I can't ever accept to lose a queen/colony.
I would have give the queenless hive that queen cell + some capped brood from the strong hive.
Probably given the weak hive some eggs incase they wanted to make more peanuts.
A long drive, that's funny. It an hour drive to get somewhere to start going somewhere here. 😂
Heck, it's two hours to church for you. Its probably an hour to the mail box.
@@628DirtRoostermy friend that bales hay calls this area the toilet bowl.😂
I wouldn't take either. I'd hire a professional like you, Randy!
LOL Good call!
Randy, First off...Thank you for another great video. While not a bee keeper yet, i would love to get involved. Regarding the dead queen do you think she would have survived if you had removed that hive first ? Usually you catch her and put her in clip. Would that have been enough to save her ?
That one other hive that has a queen cell can you put that in the one that’s queenless? Just wondering
I could if we were framing the combs. The cells were very new though and would have likely dried out in the cut out process
Thanks for sharing that means alot
Hey Randy, long time since i’ve commented on one of your videos.
Really hope you and the family are healthy and flourishing.
Watched a few new beekeepers that are doing the copycat of the veteran keepers like yourself.
It drives me nuts to see how badly they make mistakes and give the wrong information but act like they’re experts.
What’s your opinion on many of these new novice beekeeper channels?
Hey, great to see you back. It’s amazing how many beekeeping channels there are that I don’t even know about. Someone whom I’d never heard of commented on one of my videos the other day and they had 20,000 subscribers. That means they’ve been at it a while. Funny enough I don’t get to see many small beekeeping channels. UA-cam puts more travel and photography videos in my feed than anything. They know what I like to watch.
I don’t really mind the misinformed much unless they’re an unapologetic know it all. Those people irritate me. The ones who give crap information because they just haven’t figured it out yet don’t really bother me. They usually don’t have a lot of viewers while they’re figuring things out.
There are some out there who have given bad information for many years. I don’t mention them in any social media because I don’t want to be associated with them.
I would not have opened them both at the same time. I would have looked into the big one but not taken the wall off. I would take the one with the Queen so she didn't get lost or run & hide in the wall. I would hope you had 2 vacuum buckets ... one for each hive. I suppose you could put that Queen cell in with that weak hive when you box it up. But I want to make more hives.
Good seeing you again at expo. Check out any of those restaurants? Wax gold mine there, I'd have framed it all up. Remember -- "safelite repairs, safelite replace" ;)
We didn’t get to but we passed your list around to anyone who asked about a good place to eat. I saved it for our next trip up. Did you get a chance to visit any of them?
Oh yeah ;)
610 Magnolia - James Beard winning chef, totally pretentious! A MUST! (my treat next year)
Brendon's catch 23 - Best fresh Seafood
Doc Crow's - BBQ

It’s the beginning of the video and you’re already soaked in sweat. I don’t recall seeing that many roaches around a hive before
Picture of that woman with her head in her hands sitting in the carport tells the story.
I would deal with which ever colony I opened first, one at a time. So I wouldn't be in a position to compare and pick weak vs strong.
You do a good job I probably would’ve took care of the one you opened first then open the other one with that being said you’ve done it a long time so I know you know what you’re doing if it’s cool with you I would like to hear the reason from opening both at the same time so I can understand the method
If you remove the weaker of the two first would the remnants give the robbers something to target while you remove the stronger colony? Obviously that hanging comb isn't going to leave a lot of remnants, but in a "normal" situation would/could it work that way?
I am thinking maybe put them together if you can do that. I am not sure if that would cause a ruckus but it would help the weaker hive. Maybe. I am no beekeeper, just guessing. :)
"I've had better" 😂
👍😊
I would have done the same mr. Roster
Yeah, I think that was the right choice even in hindsight.
Overall, it looks like a nice place to live. Don't understand why it seems so empty.
It's never really been a thriving community in my lifetime but it's steadily in decline it seems. No good jobs for the average guy within forty minutes or so.
I would do the bees that don't have mites first, I was thinking you might spread the mites to them otherwise.
No you ain't shading your eyes with your cap on backwards! 😆😆 Nice twofer there. I probably would just do the first one I opened, then the other. The leak-proofing team on the mite washers had literally one job. 🙄
I would have only done one at a time but I thought the two exposed would make a good thumbnail. It might if I knew how to use photoshop.
I would have chose the same one you did.
How often does the queen end up in the varroa test container?
Haven’t had that happen yet. I’m sure someone has done it.
How can you already ses that it is queen less on the 2nd hive. What are the things I can look at to see that on my hives?
No brood at any stage and low numbers for the size of the hive shortly after the main flow.
Why don't I get cutouts like that Look relatively smooth. Another great video thanks.
It wasn't too bad except the heat.
You should have looked after the first one and then opened the second, the first was easiest to frame up. Then you could have taken your time and been more selective with the second.
To be honest do them have in general a high or low entrance? Btw your photo skills are really impressive
Thank you
Take the one you think has no queen. If there’s no queen combine them into one hive
I might take weak one first. Just depends. I am thinking disturbing the big one could cause robbing of the weak one.
Good observation Gary.
I am in WV. Have not had the pleasure of meeting you yet but hope some day good Lord willing ! LOL Git my first request for a hive removal from an old falling down house they other day. Still too cold here but can't wait for Spring to get in to it.@@628DirtRooster
I would have taken thee smaller one since it is smaller and would have taken less time and protected the queen sooner. The larger could than be added to the smaller one. 😊
If only they would design a cap that had a portion that would shade your eyes for you! I bet they could market it to baseball players! Nobody steal this idea!! 😂😂😂
Weird how clients don't clear out your work area.
They hardly ever do.
Did you find a live queen?
I'd take the one with zero mites first so not to contaminate the vac. But I don't know if you collected them in separate buckets.
I ended up putting them in the same vac bucket.
I would take out the smaller hive first, the smaller hive should be able to bee taken out with out a lot of honey mess to keep the robbing down as much as possible. jmho.
Could those two colonies be directly related?
They definitely could be.
I would do the larger one.
I would proceed as you do, Dirt Rooster. Say, do you save the bees wax and propilis?
We save the wax
How many stings this time?
I can’t remember. Not many though.
Why didn't you just grab some sunglasses? LOL. JK
No time to be trying to look all Hollywood :)
