THIS IS PRETTY CRAZY COOL AND SO AWESOME AS WELL , WELL DONE NEVER SEEN THISBUT GLAD TO HAVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU TAKING CARE OF WHAT THE EARTH NEEDS TO STAY ALIIVE, THANKS GUYS ,
I really admire your fearlessness. I've always loved nature and I remember as a child trying to pet bumble bees on that back and getting stung over and over again. Its sad that people don't care for honey bees the way they should be. It makes me happy that someone out there is educating people and saving bees! :)
628DirtRooster Spongebob Squarepants when he goes, "Stepping on the beach, doo-roo doo-doo! Stepping on the beach, doo-doo doo-doo!" and repeat. I forget which episode. It's one of the older ones.
Yeah, I did beekeeping for one season. I really loved it and may do it again. But I don't think I could do that. Lol. Listening to the type of buzzing I was hearing in the video, those were a bunch of pissed off girls.
Thank you to all you hivers out there who are keeping the bees going. I've been hearing about how the bees are threatened to becoming extinct. God Bless You all and hugs!
They won't become extinct as long as there are bee keepers. And then there is the Africanized bees that are increasing in numbers. They're all over the south.
Seeing something like bees I normally only see in small numbers at once in this concentration is truly amazing. Makes you appreciate nature all the more.
I very much like the way you handle Nature's gift. I've learned I've learned so much watching your videos they're wonderful. Thank you for sharing your interest
+Closing the Loop I would imagine it would have to be a really powerful vacuum to maintain a strong enough suction up to that height? But I agree with the idea, its gotta be better than stepping on a few hundred & killing them, ,
+paulspydar I saw a video recently where they used a bee vacuum with an extension. It worked beautifully. That's not really that high. You take your truck and place it underneath and then with your extended vacuum and there you go. a ladder would help too
Wow I once had bees get mad at me like that, Had to change all the frames on a three brood chamber hive and no queen in it. Some places like the one in the video are just really hard to get at. I wonder have you ever thought of tying a frame of brood to a stick. Must give it a go myself though. But for sure a few frames of brood in the boxes might have calmed them down a bit hey. What do you think.
We have tied brood boxes to ropes and raised the box to a swarm but never a cluster this big. It works pretty well if you have some old dark comb in the box. Never tried with brood though. I think these were just pissed because they had just fallen 25 feet.
Ha probably yes. I would not be happy either :) The brood really makes them stick to a box. That is what I have found on numbers occasions anyways. Must give it a shot with the frame myself when I get a chance.
I have tied an old brood frame to an extendable pole and put it next to a high swarm. They ran right onto it. I suppose if you put a frame up there with a queen attached in a cage, you could raise them one at a time and load up a couple of pounds onto the frame at once and bring it down to put into a nuc.
That sure was an inspiring task! I was thinking too, but you could construct some sort of funnel with a tarp to put underneath and then have the bees fall down into a box with a queen inside.
because that is for hives to simulate the hive burning so instead of attacking intruders they gorge on honey but these bees don't have a hive so it doesn't work for them
I know there are some youtube "killer bee" guys that say that smoke is used to simulate the hive burning, but that is not true and those people, especially one, have no idea what they are talking about. Smoke is used to mask the alarm pheromones put out by alarmed bees to keep the hive from going into a panic and turbo boosting into attack mode. Guard bees excrete isopentyl acetate and other bees sense it and go into defense mode. It has nothing to do with the bees thinking that their hive is on fire. Bees have no defense against fire and to not attempt to "save the hive" or gorge on honey. It simply stops them from being able to communicate with each other, which is what promotes aggressive behavior.
I've never seen anything like this before, but it's so fascinating! I may be ignorant here, but wouldn't it be easier to climb up and smoke the whole swarm, let them fall onto the tarp and then scoop them into separate boxes?
You say you were getting stung quite a bit. You had everything covered. Were they getting you through the jacket? This is one of my all time favorite videos. I like the more recent one where you got 25 boxes filled. And the latest one where you had a whole crew of folks with a trailer full of boxes. This beekeeper friend is a real friend - both to you and the bees! Kudos to him, and thanks to you for these videos!
Rhaine E. Daize Omg.. I laughed so hard at this comment as I was thinking these bee's look like they are going through Menopause while still suffering from PMS & they have come at "that time of the month & didn't bring any chocolate as a peace offering"!😂 I'm thinking " God Bless have mercy on their souls"!😂..🐝😇🙏🏼😇🐝
I truly respect what you do, preserving and protecting bee populations. And while I’m fascinated by beekeeping, I don’t think I could get into a job or hobby where being stung repeatedly is the nature of the business.
Thanks for the info. Sure beats balancing on a ladder in the back of a pickup, cutting the branch off and sticking it in a cardboard box.which is how I did it last year.
Hey 628DirtRooster I’m watching your massive mad bees in the pine tree and it came to mind you need a crossbow to shoot over the lim. It works every time well almost every time you got to be a good shot. Man I’d love to get them bees for my yard. Keep up the good work. Enjoy watching your videos.
This a video on how Not to treat your bees. Walking on them, crushing them, getting them to release alarm pheromone, hell guys, you got them so stirred up they are acting like Africanized bees. I hope they didn't remember this rough treatment and become aggressive hives.
I've come to respect this guy for his approach. Most men would Bit**. These guys are raw, and I love it. To each their own. If you follow his videos, he's mentioned this is a hobby for him. I think he makes other people look like complete pu$$**$
+Tom Roger Lilleby hes much better at collecting then this i guess he was in a hurry but usually the bees are really calm i watched at least 10 or more videos this is first time i seen the bees go this crazy with him.he did have a whole lot of trouble dealing with yellow jackets now that video is funny.
Wow!! Massive find. . .and nice that you had so many new queens on hand in the perfect situation. I hope the nucs turn into some decent hives. Can't wait to see the long term results. Again: Great Find!!
They are coming on like Gangbusters. I'll try and remember to get some video of them this week. My brother looked in on them today and said they had a bunch of drawn out comb and whole lot of honey in them.
***** Between my dad, my brother and myself we usually get two or three swarm calls and maybe one or two hive removal calls a week during spring. Some of our friends rely on us for queens as well. Since most commercial operations requeen every hive every year you can buy one year old laying queens kinda cheap some times.
628DirtRooster What is the going rate for a new queen when re-queening?? Just curious as I'm a bit worried that one of my new queens might be poorly mates (lots of drones laid in the first few weeks). Probably nothing but I'm a bit paranoid at times!
***** In our area new mated queens go for $18 to $25 depending on who you're dealing with. Virgin queens and one year old queens are half that. Queen cells are $3.00. If you have to order a queen she'll cost you $40 to $50 including shipping. Check with your local beekeeping clubs to find out who's grafting (raising queens). That'll save you a fortune over ordering. Or Google the registry of beekeepers for your state.
I love watching these videos... I'm not scared of bees but I respect that they can and will sting. The commentary made me laugh a few times and watching the bees rain down is so amazing.
I am very impressed that you got that rope over that limb, and I think it is funny that no matter how old we get, our parents still like to tell us what to do, and we still like to ignore it. ;)
I watched this again and I have one thing to say Randy. A bee suit may not be impervious to bee stings, but thankfully, YOU seem to be! Now I am going to go watch the BIGGEST swarm catch! I love watching that one! If you do it again, I would suggest TWO pickup trucks rigged the way you had one last time! Carefully maneuvering the trucks and a tarp between the trucks to catch those that fall between. You could probably fill twice as many hive boxes that way!
We've done that one two or three more times in different ways that I've recorded. I just haven't edited them yet. None were quite as good as the truck drop though.
Ah HA! Caught you out! You are hoarding awesome videos!! OK please please get them uploaded. Edited or not, we want to SEE them! Then I say, do it again, using TWO trucks (two different swarms, there always seem to be 2-3 at that location when you do this). And maybe invite more beekeepers to bring additional equipment to put on the ground near the pickup to gather the ones left over. There do seem to be plenty of bees!! Probably not a good place for novices though. Don't feel obligated to invite me! All is forgiven for more videos!
Who else been binge watching bee hive removal and bee keeping videos?

We may be doing this again in March. I'll certainly be considering some of these tips. I hope they are closer to the ground this time.
That sure was an inspiring task! I was thinking too, but you could construct some sort of funnel with a tarp to put underneath and then have the bees fall down into a box with a queen inside.
Your father's walk had me rolling. Love watching him.
Why not use smoke? Like have a couple 3 or 6 smoke cannisters around emmiting smoke?
because that is for hives to simulate the hive burning so instead of attacking intruders they gorge on honey but these bees don't have a hive so it doesn't work for them
Love to know the sting count on this venture. Must be worst ever
Either that or a pressure sprayer with sugar water with honey b healthy
I know there are some youtube "killer bee" guys that say that smoke is used to simulate the hive burning, but that is not true and those people, especially one, have no idea what they are talking about. Smoke is used to mask the alarm pheromones put out by alarmed bees to keep the hive from going into a panic and turbo boosting into attack mode. Guard bees excrete isopentyl acetate and other bees sense it and go into defense mode. It has nothing to do with the bees thinking that their hive is on fire. Bees have no defense against fire and to not attempt to "save the hive" or gorge on honey. Elementary deduction and a good one for sure. But I think these big boys aren't such good climbers. Better a few stings than a broken neck. :)
