Check out our store and community forum on our web site at 628dirtrooster.com/ This is what a good hive looks like after being left alone all summer.... still not bad.
Yep, it was definitely worth it man. I've been watching your channel for a while, and everything about the Bee Hive Removals are super interesting. Although, when I seen that, that's when I subbed. Too funny to pass up.
It is amazing how they prefer to freebuild the comb in preference to plastic foundation. A nice little harvest for you there. Those bees have done very well.
For some reason your videos just don't seem long enough, and I've watched just about all of your videos over the past few days. You have a very appetizing and interesting channel here. Definitely worth a subscription!
ROFL! That quick shot of your jean leg missing was priceless! What we beekeepers do for our bees. lol My great uncle used a leaf blower when he took off supers and blew out the bees. I imagine as far south as you are you don't have much down time for the bees.
+DixieGirl9876 Not a whole lot of down time. We have a friend who uses a blower. I was carrying honey supers to the trailer for him the first time I ever saw honey being extracted. First time I had ever been around a couple dozen mad hives. That's when I learned that Mechanix gloves suck for beekeeping.
Hey dirtrooster, I use hessian sacking that's been used to plug whisky barrels and the bees LOVE IT lol so do I come to think of it.... keep up the great work! Ive got 6 hives now ye har!
NO use it in my smoker, you should make a video, would like to see that one ;-) I live in the Highlands of Scotland.I have about 20 videos now on my channel.
I have been watching your videos for the last few days and have always been interested in keeping bees from a survival stand point so I'm loving your channel. I know that I can find a lot of the info other places on the internet but do you have any videos where you are dealing with stuff like the "hive beetles" and other insects that destroy or make the swarms sick? I would love to see more of those hands on type of videos on how to help keep them safe year round. Thanks in advance, Charles.
i also really like the process of getting the honey out of the frames, i think its really interesting! maybe i should look at beekeeping on a small scale, see if theres a group or something where i live in the UK
+TheOverkillWill I'm sure there's someone within a reasonable distance you could pair up with. Most beekeepers will gladly share their knowledge and many of the ones I know will loan equipment such as extractors and such.
I can see where some program or app like you mentioned could be a lot of fun- You could send out alert when you go on a call, which really sounds fun, especially from a safe distance... But yeah, since we could only interact when you were doing the lay of the land video part or waiting for bees to walk in (I love their march to new home), I doubt it would be worth the data it ate up. Maybe you could do one a year, like a special event. We could all wear our one legged pants :)
628DirtRooster wears Daisy Dukes? I do too. I have my good cut offs for when we go to walmart, and the ratty ones for yard work. Add suspenders and you got something there.
You think i should wait til spring? I live in wisconsin well i probably couldnt even get a queen now till spring anyhow thanks a million i really trust your opinion your videos are great thanks Mark
So I’m watching you cut up this denim for your smoker and just 🤔... Then I see the guy with one pants leg cut off at the knee while he works in the hive🤣😂😂🤣! I love these videos
i hate it when they cross comb each frame together so much you have to cut it apart every time. Or when they draw honey comb so thick on foundationless that you can't get the frames together close enough. learned my lesson on doing true foundationless im totally wiring my frames next year for the sake of getting straighter less crazy comb.
+Pop's Shack This guy. LOL I always do that with the intention of coming back and filling the box but then I see a butterfly in right field and forget what I was doing.
I finally figured it out who you and and all your cohorts remind me of: You are definitely Pooh Bear. Your brother is Eeyore. Yappy is Tigger. And Mr Ed ... well he is Piglet. Oh and your Dad, well of course he is Alan Milne. I still haven't found the character to fill the Christopher Robin role.
That was a big hive! how many queens does a hive like that have and like how long does it take for a hive to grow that big?...how many stings did you get while harvesting this hive?
No, it's easier to move your hives to crops than to try and plant enough to affect your honey. BUT, I do still spread seed every year for goldenrod and other wild flowers.
How come you guys use the corrugated plastic on the inside of your lids? Is that for hive beetle control also? Sorry for all the questions. It's interesting for me to see how you guys in the south east combat pests sometime differently based on different pests.
+Randy Taylor It started because we built a bunch of tops with peg board and that wasn't a good idea. Initially it was to cover the peg board holes. It turned out to be a decent way to keep the propolis and wax build up off the lids.
why didnt he tear the larger peice down in one big chunk and then got the bees off, non of the comb look useable or salvagable, the honey seemed like it would be too hard to extract so why did he cut it in peices?
Dunno if anyone told you before, but I was watching one your older videos and you used a scratcher fork to scrape the cappings off, but I heard you're supposed to slide the thing under the cappings like a spatula and then pull them off so it'll do less damage to the comb.
+Bear Man lol, yeah, I don't play by the rules. It's just so much faster to scrape the tops off and the difference in the damage is not too bad. If you do a bunch of boxes of frames and "pick it" like you're supposed to it takes forever.
Hello Dirt Rooster, I need your advise. Got in my hive today (Sep 27). We are already getting into the 60s and 50s at night. While in the hive, all the frames were packed with honey, packed with bees and saw a lot of capped brood on every frame, but no larva or eggs. Is this normal for this time of year? Could my queen have decided to stop laying for now? I'm a little worried.
By leaving the comb outside of the hive for the bees to clean back out are you not inviting the hive to be robbed? I thought (could be wrong as that is the case most times....LOL) you mentioned that a while back in another vid..
+John Rideout I spread it out as evenly as I can on as many hives as I can so each hive has it's own entrance to clean up and comb to rob. I pick all the comb up before I leave. All my hives are pretty strong right now and they usually only become prey what they are weak. I do keep an eye on them for problems when I do this.
+mrstihl16 I slapped mediums on a few boxes last minute and didn't have enough frames to fill all of them. I think that was the only one I did that on this time. I get side tracked and forget to come back and add frames.
Hello from Hungary! I was wondering as I'm not a beekeeper myself, you always seem to touch your honeycombs with bare hands, so I'm assuming the bees don't sting your hands? Are they really that timid?
Thanks for the video, hows your shoulder doing? Man, take it easy with that thing, it won't ever be like new don't care what they tell you, I've already re tore both mine and they won't get another chance to jack with mine and that's a fact, good luck.
+wincharter1 Thanks bro. My shoulder is doing just ok. I've been in the gym rehabbing with light weigh on presses and curls. It's still weak and hurts but is getting better. I'm taking it slow. I'm scared of tearing that repaired bicep loose.
Mine finally healed but then I forgot about it and picked up something really heavy, (battery) and re tore that sucker, the other was never any good, it was always tight and finally re tore. Thanks Man
I'm trying to understand something here. you showed yourself eating some drone comb. you can eat that?? thought drone comb was the raised cells with drone pupa in them? I tried looking it up, but can't find what I'm looking for. do bees store honey in the drone comb as well or something? you said it was drone comb but it was full of honey when you ate it. Guess I'm just confused lol. Sorry
They will store honey in all cells except queen cells. Some drone cells never have drones in them. They build them out for the queen to lay in them but before she can get there they start storing honey.
What region of the South are you in? Also how difficult might it be to keep bees in the Appalachian mountains. Do you think it would be too cold for them to fly year round even if you're at the southern end of the range?
When you are working on the boxes, or hives, why don't the bees attack you? I know you mentioned trying this without smoke and they become agitated, but I always thought if you disturbed their hive, that is when they might sting you. You seem to be able to work freely within the box, without being attacked. Do drones just work on the hive and do nothing more? I just subscribed to your channel, I am fascinated by these videos.
Hey i tried to contact you with an issue and i couldnt figure out how to rivate message you but my main issue is one of my hive is just an angry hive will it change by spring or do i gotta requeen?
+Mark Draeger Check to see if the queen is still there. If they lose the queen they will get harder to work. They also get more defensive if they don't have enough honey stored up or if there are beetle or other pest problems. If there's none of that then I'd say requeen.
i will be doomed if they ever start up---Bee TV--- i swear i could watch it all day long-what is your take on the queen excluders??- keep up the great vids... many blessings
+movinon04 They have their place. I'm not opposed to using them but I don't always. I like them for grafting or for locating the queen before splitting a big stack of boxes and sometimes I put them under the honey super. I know there is a certain well known beekeeper telling everyone that they wear out the wings of the workers but I just don't see a reduction in number when I use them.
Two basic reasons. Early on a bunch of our covers were built with whatever scrap we could find which included peg board with metal covers. The peg board turned into a nightmare with all those holes for beetles to hide in and the bees to try and propolize. Our quick fix was to put coroplast in all the covers. Later on we kept using it especially in old weak covers since if it's not attached to the cover the bees can't propolize the cover to the box. Just pick the cover up (no prying) and then just peel the coroplast off.
he heee lmao making some fast cut off, i'am the same way got to have my cargo shorts.! could use em as sleeves, put some rubber bands on top and bottom.. A LOT OF WORK. OMG FRESH HONEY FROM THE HIVE, don't get better than that. TC RANDY CHEERS BUD
Hey DirtRooster, a friend of mine uses lemons in his ant hives to keep beetles out of his ant nests/tanks. Have you tried or heard of this technique for keeping beetles out of bee hives?
He uses slices. His ant terrarium was full of mites so he put a slice of lemon on one side and that part of the colony was clear of mites. After that, he placed lemons all over and that cleared out the mites. The ants were even eating on top of the lemon slices. Don't know why that worked but it did.
ethical question: my top bar hive which I got in April with last years drawn comb and stores did absolutely nothing. The queen was a dud. Bad layer and the bees brought in virtually no stores. No honey made as of mid August . SO, do I let them just go and do nothing, or try to save them? Another hive I bought at the same time has 4 boxes. Two perfect brood boxes and 2 beautiful honey supers. Got it at the same place. Whats your opinion Oh Wise One?
guitarfend If you can find a mated queen would be the best option. For storage you can wrap your box or just the frames up and put moth crystals in with them until next spring.
They are almost gone in a few days. The hive is full of ants and I think they are bailing. Maybe top bar hiving isn't for me. I put the legs in water but with Zika I let it go dry, Back to the drawing board.
Hey, I know this is a 4 year old video... but you typically respond to my posts on old vids. lol I am curious why you dont have queen excluders on every hive. I can understand not using during winters when they cluster. But in this case, you had drone larva hanging off your cover.
Depends on how many hives I’m running and if I’m actually trying to produce honey to extract. Sometimes it’s just easier without them. If there’s a good honey ring above the brood the queen typically won’t cross it to lay in the honey supers especially if hive space is managed properly and there is a good flow. They’ll fill frames with honey before the queen can wander up and find open cells.
when he was smoking the hive heavily am I the only one that saw the bees almost seem to appear out of nowhere and not as a part of the background like an old cheesy 80's B horror flick? LOL
There’s a lady that livesinCincinnati and has bees her husband has its own light at the outside of the boxes is that necessary because I was watching the man in Canada at it really gets cold there and he had nothing on his beehivesIs that the way it is that you don’t need to insulate them thank you
I'll admit when it panned out to show you without a pants leg, I laughed pretty damn hard. XD
Mission accomplished. :)
Yep, it was definitely worth it man. I've been watching your channel for a while, and everything about the Bee Hive Removals are super interesting. Although, when I seen that, that's when I subbed. Too funny to pass up.
Method 13 me too!!!
Method 13 me too!
I had to roll it back and look for myself. Omfg that was hilarious.
Someone needs to make a compilation of every time he says "if you're ever running low on smoker fuel, just use __"
now thats funny, I fell out laughin when the camera zoomed out
I would get so fat eating comb every time I did something like that. Beekeeping is so cool.
Your new nick name would be Winnie
Oh my goodness, the pan out to the shot of the one long pant leg, priceless. I am still laughing almost 3 years later.
Watching this is so much better than tv. Thanks
+rchopp I hardly watch TV any more. UA-cam is like having a TV with millions of channels and the ability to skip commercials.
628DirtRooster And the ability to immediately communicate with the people making the videos *and* all the other viewers!
I am famous now... made an appearance on the 628dirt rooster channel! lol
that looked like some great tasting honey Bro.
+Papa's Place I want your autograph.
Ha ha ha
628DirtRooster I wanna try how honeycomb feels in my mouth I know it tastes like honey Idk how to explain it
First time I've ever said awww to a baby drone bee
It is amazing how they prefer to freebuild the comb in preference to plastic foundation.
A nice little harvest for you there. Those bees have done very well.
+The Productive Garden Makes me want to redesign my hives and do a more natural method but it wouldn't be as manageable.
For some reason your videos just don't seem long enough, and I've watched just about all of your videos over the past few days. You have a very appetizing and interesting channel here. Definitely worth a subscription!
+Shaun Jay LOL Thanks for the sub man.
+628DirtRooster Anytime! Thanks again for sharing your hobby with us!
Never been a huge bee fan but i find myself watching these videos alot.
Thankful for the views.
That's great nice watching the coverage. Thank you.
+Artic Circle Thanks bro

I love them britches, and that drone brood sure looked tasty ;-)
+justlivin I was keeping my left knee cool.
Looks like a full time job to me :))) Its not really a job if you love what you do , Gerry .
+krazy45cat It can become quite time consuming.
Hey dirtrooster, I use hessian sacking that's been used to plug whisky barrels and the bees LOVE IT lol so do I come to think of it.... keep up the great work! Ive got 6 hives now ye har!
+Highlander Bees For a flavorful inner cover? lol I don't remember if I've shown it but I have a whiskey barrel with a hive in it.
NO use it in my smoker, you should make a video, would like to see that one ;-) I live in the Highlands of Scotland.I have about 20 videos now on my channel.

Lol. Love your new garb. Gotta try these out. Lol
Funny looking pants,..that was funny,..You are the bee ninja,..
+Bobby Brown Had to uncover my good kicking leg. Those jeans restrict my movement while I'm performing my ninja moves.
Oh,... Okay,.. I knew there was more to it,.. ;)
628DirtRooster 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
i also really like the process of getting the honey out of the frames, i think its really interesting! maybe i should look at beekeeping on a small scale, see if theres a group or something where i live in the UK

The pant leg trick put me on the floor..... LOL!!! Crazy funny.
+rustynails113 I hoped it would be funny.
I know you have shown it before but I love to watch the extraction process..:)
+Ross Hastings We may do a little more before winter sets in.
Little bit of slapstick comedy there! LOL! Do the bees just hang out nearby when you smoke'm out? Fascinating as usual, thanks!
+Rob Farrow Yeah, the ones that don't go down in the box go airborne and head back to the box entrance.
I can see where some program or app like you mentioned could be a lot of fun- You could send out alert when you go on a call, which really sounds fun, especially from a safe distance... There you go! The one legged beekeepers meet up. :)
Cool videos man. Thanks
Im dying lmao the pants leg was GREAT
We are having a good little ivy bloom right now here in northwest California.
+retcwby I'll have to be on the lookout for that. I don't even know where any ivy is around here.
Yes I had an orientation flight today it looked like a swarm first time I ever seen it like that
O-M-G!!! 1/2 jeans leg made my night! 😂😂😂
New fad
Another great video! I laughed a few times too 👏🐝👍
I love to bring a smile. :)
+628DirtRooster well just to let you know it defiantly made me smile
Binge watching the 28 dirt rooster 🐓 😌 👌 gotta love youtube when kids are in bed and can put on Dirt rooster from 6 years ago! 😀
Love it!!
:/ Ended so arubptly! still binge watching..... :)
Like the movie No Country For Old Men? lol
0:16 lmao
i spit out my soda...
XD
Whenever you handle a hive I always think of Billy Talent's song Sudden Movements, which is ironic considering they have a song called Worker Bees.
Ha!
Lol "Big Bootie Judy"
You made me laugh right out loud!!!
628DirtRooster wears Daisy Dukes? I do too. I have my good cut offs for when we go to walmart, and the ratty ones for yard work. Add suspenders and you got something there.
+David Jastram My kids are repulsed by my attire most of the time.
+628DirtRooster Well, there's a good reason there to continue dressing that way. :)
+Dave Casey (dgcasey) And they know that's how it works.
your hives are always just so mellow my hive that is crazy there is no way i could go in it without being fully dressed
+Mark Draeger If smoke won't calm then then just requeen from someone else's stock and the problem will take care of it's self in a short time.
You think i should wait til spring? I live in wisconsin well i probably couldnt even get a queen now till spring anyhow thanks a million i really trust your opinion your videos are great thanks Mark
***** Thanks for watching Mark.
So I’m watching you cut up this denim for your smoker and just 🤔... Then I see the guy with one pants leg cut off at the knee while he works in the hive🤣😂😂🤣! I love these videos

+TheItalian Garden Yeah, they really get creative with it some times.
I heard you say 2 weeks, what would happen if you had abandoned that open box for say, 2 months?
Ha! As soon as you opened that first hive, I thought "Who forgot frames?".
I still haven't found the character to fill the Christopher Robin role.
we're going to have to find a Christopher Robin to add to the troupe.
That was a big hive! how many queens does a hive like that have and like how long does it take for a hive to grow that big?...how many stings did you get while harvesting this hive?
One queen per hive. Can't remember on the stings.
You seriously need your own show on tv.
Not me. I'm shy on camera.
Do you ever plant clover or flowers to feed the bees and impact the taste of the honey.
No, it's easier to move your hives to crops than to try and plant enough to affect your honey. BUT, I do still spread seed every year for goldenrod and other wild flowers.
Agreed -- that honey looks delicious!
+Suzanne Gillespie It's pretty dang good.

That queen needs to fire the eccentric architect and hire a competent city developer civil engineer, but not you in that outfit! LOL
It was a community organizer that laid it out. ;)
Omg! Lol! Opening was hilarious! What did your wife say when you showed up down one pant leg?
why didnt he tear the larger peice down in one big chunk and then got the bees off, non of the comb look useable or salvagable, the honey seemed like it would be too hard to extract so why did he cut it in peices?
When honey is extracted from a frame what becomes of the empty comb in the frame? Can the empty comb be put back into a hive or is it just beeswax?
+grayswandir47 It can go right back in a hive. It saves the bees some work.
What are the bees getting pollen from that next there any dark do you know
Dunno if anyone told you before, but I was watching one your older videos and you used a scratcher fork to scrape the cappings off, but I heard you're supposed to slide the thing under the cappings like a spatula and then pull them off so it'll do less damage to the comb.

It's possible but I would go through that thing with a fine tooth comb and if there's no queen I'd get one.
By leaving the comb outside of the hive for the bees to clean back out are you not inviting the hive to be robbed? I thought (could be wrong as that is the case most times....LOL) you mentioned that a while back in another vid..

All my hives are pretty strong right now and they usually only become prey what they are weak. I do keep an eye on them for problems when I do this.
I wouldnt expect bees to still be raising lots of drones this time of year? dont they typically kick the drones from the hive in about a month or so?
+Wim miW They'll get the boot before winter. This hive was developing a swarm mentality and that's why they were raising drones.
I hate cell rite foundation. So does my bees, they want touch it, waxed or no wax
not sure if I have missed this from another video, but why do you even put another box on a hive if it isn't filled with frames?
+mrstihl16 I slapped mediums on a few boxes last minute and didn't have enough frames to fill all of them. I think that was the only one I did that on this time. I get side tracked and forget to come back and add frames.
Hello from Hungary! I was wondering as I'm not a beekeeper myself, you always seem to touch your honeycombs with bare hands, so I'm assuming the bees don't sting your hands? Are they really that timid?
I do get stung a few times a week. Just have to be careful.
did he really just rip his jeans to use as smoke
Haha. They were trashed anyway. Had a non repairable rip in an embarrassing place.
That was hilarious
Tim Huffman Now everybody knows I'll give the shirt off my back for a laugh. :D
628DirtRooster - Glad you didn't demonstrate with the underwear! 😂
What do you do if a honey comb has bee larvas too? How do you separate them from the honey?
+TheWitchvortex Just cut it away before extracting the honey.
Thanks Man
wincharter1 Man I hate that. You going to try and get them fixed?
Nope, once was enough for me, took 8 months to get them done and get over it, bummer in the summer, lol.
How do you keep them from freezing during the winter and I didn't think that bees are out in the winter?
The keep themselves warm by clustering closely together. Body heat. They fly a lot during winter down here because it doesn't get very cold.
Mississippi. You can keep bees up there.
628DirtRooster Hey, thanks for the answer.
Drone do no work. Work them easy and they don't get mad.
Wouldn't it be cool if you could drill little hive beetle sized holes in the corners of the boxes so the bees could escorts the beetles out?
LOL loved the white leg, LOL.
+brendahere Needs a little sun. :)
Have you done anymore Periscope broadcasts? How do we find out when you are doing them?
I did a few maybe a year ago. Haven't even thought about it lately.
Hey i tried to contact you with an issue and i couldnt figure out how to rivate message you but my main issue is one of my hive is just an angry hive will it change by spring or do i gotta requeen?

How's the texture and what does the comb taste like? Just curious
Wax and honey. Don't know how I would describe the texture. Soft and chewy I guess.
What are the honey combs made out of...(Structure not the honey)
+lego scape (Legoscape) Wax that is produced by a gland on the bee's belly.
what do u do if it is filled with honey and some eggs or larve??
I take the honey
i will be doomed if they ever start up---Bee TV--- i swear i could watch it all day long-what is your take on the queen excluders??- keep up the great vids... many blessings

@@628DirtRooster Interesting. Thanks for the response.
Is it hard to do what you are doing with gloves on? looks like your hands are taken a beating.
Gloves to make it more difficult.
he heee lmao making some fast cut off, i'am the same way got to have my cargo shorts.! could use em as sleeves, put some rubber bands on top and bottom.. A LOT OF WORK. OMG FRESH HONEY FROM THE HIVE, don't get better than that. TC RANDY CHEERS BUD
That's the only kind I eat. :)
Periscope is cool but it's only realtime, wish you could record it & put it on UA-cam
Pet Brown Recluse?
It's a little sad to see the dead bees when they get smooshed or swamped. But at least the hive will be healthier.
True. Some have to pay a price.
Hey DirtRooster, a friend of mine uses lemons in his ant hives to keep beetles out of his ant nests/tanks. Have you tried or heard of this technique for keeping beetles out of bee hives?
Haven't heard of that in bee hives. He's using slices, pulp or juice?
He uses slices. His ant terrarium was full of mites so he put a slice of lemon on one side and that part of the colony was clear of mites. After that, he placed lemons all over and that cleared out the mites. The ants were even eating on top of the lemon slices.
Don't know why that worked but it did.
Very funny. I have heard of people coming out of the woods with a missing pant leg cause it was time to drop the chulupa if you know what i mean!
Did I tell you I DID SUBSCRIBED!
Not sure. ;)
ethical question: my top bar hive which I got in April with last years drawn comb and stores did absolutely nothing.
I'd requeen or put it in storage. Don't want a weak hive attracting pests to your yard to maybe spread to the other hives.
Requeen so late in the year? Also what do you mean by put it in storage?
guitarfend If you can find a mated queen would be the best option.
I recon they decided for you.
Hey, I know this is a 4 year old video... but you typically respond to my posts on old vids. lol
I am curious why you dont have queen excluders on every hive.
Don't bees attack when their nest is compromised?
Yes
I always find bee keeping interesting.
same! yet i cant stand been near one
ever get black widows in your bee boxes?
Under the edge of the lids and bottoms.
How many times do you get stung doing this?
probably next to no times, the bees are fairly docile, especially when you smoke them
he doesnt even wear a suit its the only bee keeper ive seen that doesnt wear a suit
+Julian john codys lab
What happens to a bee if it gets covered in honey?
Other bees will help clean it off if it's in the hive. If it's outside the hive it will usually die.
Do the bees that get stuck in the honey die?
+kasai_mystery A few will.
I never knew Spiders could live with Bees
+MinecraftGaming04 They eat them if they'll catch them. but they do enjoy they same environmental conditions.
i hate the beetles for the damage they do and im sat scared death after seeing that spider
How did you not set off a robbing frenzy?
+Jeff Douglas None of the colonies were short on honey and this one was strong enough to ward off and outsiders.
you dont use an electric extractor Randy??? or just use a manual one when you only have a few to do??
+Shane Villis Yeah, we have a 30 frame extractor but the little one is easier when it's just a few frames.
its been a while since you put one up...... you get lost or something??? lol and how's Chuck?? he lost his video presence lmao
Shane Villis Been a busy summer. I shot some video at Chucks a month or so ago but somehow lost the footage. It was good stuff too.
lmao good onya
when he was smoking the hive heavily am I the only one that saw the bees almost seem to appear out of nowhere and not as a part of the background like an old cheesy 80's B horror flick? LOL
There’s a lady that livesinCincinnati and has bees her husband has its own light at the outside of the boxes is that necessary because I was watching the man in Canada at it really gets cold there and he had nothing on his beehivesIs that the way it is that you don’t need to insulate them thank you
