  • Note: this video's title and thumbnail have changed. The original title was 'My Garfield Vacation: A Historical Voyage'
Here it is! Six months in the making, a voyage into the lost history of the Garfield comic strip, from Fairmount to Muncie. I have spent a lot of time making sure that all this Garfield content is in good condition, and I hope you guys like this little documentation of the journey. Crack open a new pack of Lasagne, gather around with the family, and join me on my Garfield Vacation!

50:16: Fitting song to use, since the title of the music track is called "Salute to a New Beginning", which fits the whole rewriting of Garfield History!
Speaking of which, 8:04: So Garfield *was* named after a President. The name was taken from Jim Davis' Grandfather who happens to be named after the President.

Growing up in Indiana I probably heard at some point that Jim Davis is from here... but somehow never put two and two together and have always just assumed it was common for businesses to randomly have Garfield statues? Like I just thought Garfield was so widely loved that random grocery stores just sometimes decided to have statues of him installed. Indiana being Jim Davis' home state makes a lot more sense, but I miss the world I used to live in where I thought random Garfield statues were a common occurrence everywhere lmao

I was just thinking the same thing, haha. I've lived in Indiana for over 20 years and I never gave it a second thought that Garfield is everywhere. It was much the same in central Illinois where I grew up since that was Garfield's prime time. I loved Garfield growing up so I just assumed so did everyone else and that's why I see him everywhere. Didn't put two and two together about the Jim Davis being from Indiana connection until now. You're not alone, haha.

Same! I’ve lived in Indy for like three years now, and i don’t think i ever even knew Jim Davis was from the area. I just assumed that Garf was just a big enough cultural icon that some people liked to have statues and signs and stuff of the character 😂

Lmao. I think I assumed that the Arkansas River in Kansas was a completely separate river from the actual Arkansas River? To this day if I ever have to mention the Arkansas River in front of someone who isn't from Kansas, I have to pause and think before I speak lmao.

I know self deprecating humor is fashionable, but it made me kind of sad when Quinton was on Maple Street and said “Don’t waste your life like I have.” Quinton’s unironic joy in all things Garfield is really refreshing to see and I think it’s wonderful he found that street. It’s a street that reminded me of my home town and gave me a moment of reflection. I hope Quinton’s self deprecation is exaggerated because his Garfield content has given me a lot of joy in learning about Garfield as an important figure in pop culture.

Quinton, as a professional archivist, I've really enjoyed watching your videos on your Garfield research. Archives are such wonderful resources that a lot of peoples don't realize are free and open to the public (in most cases nowadays). I hope that your videos plant that seed for your viewers. One of the reasons archivists preserve and describe this stuff is just so curious people like you can tell untold stories like this one.

The fact that Quintons love of Garfield is so clearly tied to his bond with his father is just wonderful. A lot of media only shows us father/son relationships that are hostile or cold or based on the son not living up to his father's dreams. And a lot of those deal with a traditionally masculine father being unable to connect with his dorky or otherwise non-macho son. So it's just nice to see the opposite of that.

This all hits very close to home for me, because I actually live in a town known for a comic strip. I live in Santa Rosa, the home of 'Peanuts,' by Charles M. Shulz. You can't go very far without seeing a statue of a peanuts character. We have a 'Snoopy's Ice Rink,' a museum dedicated to Charles Schultz-and we did have his childhood home, until the fires. Muncie is also obsessed with Bob Ross, as he filmed on the ball state campus.

As soon as Quinton mentioned Muncie, I kept asking myself where I knew that name from. I am so glad I saw this comment, or else it probably would have continued to haunt me for several days, until I eventually watched an episode of "The Joy of Painting" and remembered.

This video gave me some good feels. As a person who also hyperfixates on specific works of media, watching someone with the same level of passion being able to enjoy such an iconic trip really gives me the happies :) And as a child who had their own Garfield-phase, it was great being sent back to a happy part of my childhood through this video

There's something so wholesome and infectious about seeing and hearing people talk about their interests with such knowledge and passion. Whether nor not you share the same interests. Also those Garfield hangers @30:37 - I've never seen such things...and I kinda dig them.

Made my way here after you bumped it on the End of Victorious video. I can see why you're so happy with this one, your passion is so evident and the hard work you've put into it shows. I never thought I'd find myself getting into an hour long video about Garfield, but here we are. Keep doing what you're doing!
