I don’t understand why quinton was pretending not to understand it though. It’s clearly just a fictional scapegoat for the cats to blame for knocking the trash cans over so they can eat. When the humans get mad at the cats for knocking trash cans over, they can presumably be like “oh wasn’t us, that was the garbage ape”. Or maybe people that haven’t had pets aren’t familiar with the guilty “it wasn’t me” look cats give you when they knock stuff over
For the longest time, I’ve only ever heard of Heathcliff as a Garfield ripoff. Now I know Heathcliff is being of chaos, confusing everyone, evading the cops and being weird. Why is Garfield the more popular one again?
Maybe the garbage ape is just a neighborhood resident throwing their trash away once a week. could the cats see the garbage ape like kids see santa or the easter bunny?
Garbage Ape is really a genus piece of humor if you think of it. The joke is the idea of cats having a mythological character similar in strangeness to someone like Santa, like how strange and foreign the idea would sound to someone who didn't grow up with the culture he is a part of. Garbage Ape isn't supposed to make sense, almost making him an early anti-humor meme.

The thing about "Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats" is that it's first season was co-produced by TMS. So you had original characters being designed by an anime studio for a decidedly non-anime source material. Though on a technical level it actually did look better than a lot of cartoons from that era. At least in terms of how the characters moved around.
The "Last Original Voice" trivia fact is most likely true. By the 80s, Mel Blanc had become a mainstream celebrity and was even appearing on talk shows. Because of this, he no longer needed to rely on voice acting as his only source of income and started charging higher rates. For example, the part of Scrappy-Doo was originally written for him but was given to someone else when HB learned they could no longer afford him.
From a quick wikipedia search, that appears to be case, if you exclude minor characters. The actual last Mel Blanc character would be Piggy McGrabit on the Flintstone Kids.
According to Dave Thomas (the comedian, not the Wendy's guy), Blanc's fee towards the end of his life was $10,000 an hour plus a limo rental. Given that Blanc was arguably THE only cartoon voice actor who was a household name even to this day, it's not surprising that he was able to charge such a fee for his services. (Thomas and Rick Moranis wanted him to voice Bob and Doug McKenzie's father in "Strange Brew" but the president of MGM balked at his fee. They eventually got him in the studio for an hour and lied to the studio president by saying "we were able to talk him down to $10,000 for the entire session.")
Actually Heathcliff's voice isn't all that original. Mel Blanc used similar voices on a lot of his earlier shows (especially his radio show) and Garfield's laugh is basically Yak-Yak's from The Perils of Penelope Pitstop.
"If i were to call Heathcliff a knockoff or derivative of any comic... [it would be] the comic it was usually printed directly next to, The Family Circus." *Shows Heathcliff comic printed directly above Dennis the Menace*

Are we going to address the Heathcliff picture on the wall that says "Thanks, Bergenfield" much like the Garfield picture with "Thanks, Pendleton" written on it?
“How broken is your humor?” Well when Quinton went into his ad read and finished it with Raid Shadow Legends, I laughed so much and so loud that I A) had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard and B) had my roommate tell me to quote “Shut the fuck up and go to sleep, it’s 2 in the fucking morning Montague.” Then proceeded to keep laughing but only more muffled because I find Raid Shadow Legends as a punchline and the sponsor at the same time so fucking funny. That’s how broken my humor is.
Omg,.I'm glad I saw your comment. I would have totally missed that otherwise. Love Quinton's secret transformers fandom that only manifests itself in the background or as throwaway lines.
Heathcliff and Garfield are two different takes on the exact same character brief; “the character is a cat whose actions, no matter how bizarre, are stereotypically cat like in nature”. Garfield ended up having his character traits being a cat’s stereotypical laziness while Heathcliff had his traits be a cats stereotypical natural to live on the streets essentially, or do cat things (like the scratching pole dress joke).
alright alright quinton, you've talked about garfield, now heathcliff you're just missing one orange comic strip cat now Bill the cat from bloom county
This reminds me of that Adventure Time episode where Finn thinks his comic caption is really funny even though it isn't. I loved the Saturday morning cartoon though, it had the best theme song.
@@tremisanthrope I just rewatched it again and I really love the slice of life episodes. I'm glad they haven't changed that much with Distant Lands, just enough to feel fresh and new.
I like the fantasy style gags and dark elements of the show, however Spoilers: I feel like any serious drama in the show wasn't that great especially around romantic relationships and I felt the fact that it was a children's cartoon often held it back, with Finn losing his arm in a really weirdly bloodless way that kind of misses the point of even having him go through said experiences. Also Fire Princess and Finn's BB triangle were entirely pointless.
So, Heathcliff and Garfield both couldn’t talk originally, but Garfield had thought bubbles, and they gave an actual voice to silent Heathcliff. Makes sense to me.
In our local paper, the comics were always at the back of the features section. Whether it was Food on Fridays or Travel on Saturdays… the last two pages were the comics, horoscopes and crosswords. Except… Heathcliff and Marmaduke always ran in the classifieds. They were like secret grown up comics you didn’t read unless you were looking for a job or reading bankruptcy notices.

I remember getting a Heathcliff comic book from the thrift store. I found his name reference to be pretty funny lololol, but yeah Heathcliff was always picking fights and bullying dogs. I did not see anything about helmets and garbage apes... this threw me for a loop
“I’m not a furry”
-proudly displays sticker of musclebound cat
"I'm not a redditor"
-fucking dies
Quinton and Saberspark are high key on the same level of being furries, but that level isn’t enough to like the Cadillac Cats just because they’re sexy
Maybe it's Evil Quinton that's not a furry?
That moment when Garfield stuff in the background changed into Heatcliff stuff made me unreasonably happy when I noticed it I really love your sets
I honest to god feel like this show/ strip was shitposting before shitposting became a thing.Every one of those unexplainable jokes wouldn’t look out of place in today’s surreal hellscape of comedy
When I first saw that the first thing that came to mind was zoomer humor.
Are we going to address the Heathcliff picture on the wall that says "Thanks, Bergenfield" much like the Garfield picture with "Thanks, Pendleton" written on it?
Don't know. Are we going to address Quinton's terrible T-shirt?
@@SirBlackReeds Piss and Cry

All the plushies / stickers / toys did too 😺
Everything is Heathcliff. Everything always has been Heathcliff.
@@eruption257 within the first minute it was all garfield
@@WatermeloneRee I know not what you are talking of. We have always been at war with Garfasia.
Even the signed poster on the right was changed. That's some pretty neato attention to detail.
“How broken is your humor?”
Well when Quinton went into his ad read and finished it with Raid Shadow Legends, I laughed so much and so loud that I A) had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard and B) had my roommate tell me to quote “Shut the fuck up and go to sleep, it’s 2 in the fucking morning Montague.” Then proceeded to keep laughing but only more muffled because I find Raid Shadow Legends as a punchline and the sponsor at the same time so fucking funny. That’s how broken my humor is.
Mine is so broken that I started laughing hysterically immediately upon seeing the gravy helmet comics

Garfield, Heathcliff and Cool cat. Orange cat trifecta.
It would be a quadfecta if you were to count Scratch from Space Cats. Then again, that show's barely remembered.

Do you think Heathcliff is going to dive headlong into whatever is written on his helmet? Like he’s gonna rush the gravy? Or the... dirt?
or family?
Heathcliff and Garfield are two different takes on the exact same character brief; “the character is a cat whose actions, no matter how bizarre, are stereotypically cat like in nature”.
Garfield ended up having his character traits being a cat’s stereotypical laziness while Heathcliff had his traits be a cats stereotypical natural to live on the streets essentially, or do cat things (like the scratching pole dress joke).
alright alright quinton, you've talked about garfield, now heathcliff
you're just missing one orange comic strip cat now

This reminds me of that Adventure Time episode where Finn thinks his comic caption is really funny even though it isn't. I loved the Saturday morning cartoon though, it had the best theme song.
For such a strange show, Adventure Time was also fairly mundane. I love it.
@@tremisanthrope I just rewatched it again and I really love the slice of life episodes. I'm glad they haven't changed that much with Distant Lands, just enough to feel fresh and new.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 Distant lands are basically adventure time movies, but only focusing on a couple of characters
I like the fantasy style gags and dark elements of the show, however
Spoilers:
I feel like any serious drama in the show wasn't that great especially around romantic relationships and I felt the fact that it was a children's cartoon often held it back, with Finn losing his arm in a really weirdly bloodless way that kind of misses the point of even having him go through said experiences. Also Fire Princess and Finn's BB triangle were entirely pointless.
AT, mundane? Are you sure you're not thinking of another show?
Oh my god, all the stuff in the background that was Garfield is now Heathcliff.
Background course correction at its finest.
Except…
Heathcliff and Marmaduke always ran in the classifieds. They were like secret grown up comics you didn’t read unless you were looking for a job or reading bankruptcy notices.
Alternate title: man wishes to kiss a cartoon cat over Garfield
I love this. No one is doing Sunday comics deep dives. I’ll patreon the shit out of your patreon for videos about The Wizard of Id and BC.
