Several times in the past few years, I have made videos discussing my love of the Jim Davis character Garfield the cat. We’re talked about movies, vacation hot spots, and even lost media during this time, but there’s one angle we still haven’t looked at: Garfield’s “rival” of sorts, Heathcliff! Today on Quinton Reviews, I want to take an equally heavy look at THIS orange cat, from Hogan’s Alley to the Catillac Cats! There’s a lot of history to cover here, and I’m excited to get underway!

I'm pretty sure Garbage Ape is a parody of holiday characters like the Easter Bunny or to a lesser extent Santa. Instead being a rabbit that brings eggs and chocolate to human children, it's an ape that brings garbage to cats.
The joke is that the Garbage Ape makes every bit as much sense as the Easter Bunny, but the Ape just doesn't have the cultural history for him to seem normal to us.

Garfield taps into things we don't like, like Mondays and life's little annoyances. Heathcliff is a villain portrayed as the protagonist.

"Garbage Ape" honestly kinda sounds like a synonym for humans that cats would have.
Maybe the garbage ape is just a neighborhood resident throwing their trash away once a week. could the cats see the garbage ape like kids see santa or the easter bunny?
Garbage Ape sounds like a nickname for raccoons
Garfield wouldn't care if the surface of the planet was on fire. Heathcliff would be the reason why it's on fire in the first place.

I don’t understand why quinton was pretending not to understand it though. It’s clearly just a fictional scapegoat for the cats to blame for knocking the trash cans over so they can eat. Garbage Ape is really a genus piece of humor if you think of it.
The joke is the idea of cats having a mythological character similar in strangeness to someone like Santa, like how strange and foreign the idea would sound to someone who didn't grow up with the culture he is a part of. Garbage Ape isn't supposed to make sense, almost making him an early anti-humor meme.

The thing about "Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats" is that it's first season was co-produced by TMS. So you had original characters being designed by an anime studio for a decidedly non-anime source material. Though on a technical level it actually did look better than a lot of cartoons from that era. At least in terms of how the characters moved around.

The "Last Original Voice" trivia fact is most likely true. By the 80s, Mel Blanc had become a mainstream celebrity and was even appearing on talk shows. Because of this, he no longer needed to rely on voice acting as his only source of income and started charging higher rates. For example, the part of Scrappy-Doo was originally written for him but was given to someone else when HB learned they could no longer afford him.
From a quick wikipedia search, that appears to be case, if you exclude minor characters. The actual last Mel Blanc character would be Piggy McGrabit on the Flintstone Kids.
According to Dave Thomas (the comedian, not the Wendy's guy), Blanc's fee towards the end of his life was $10,000 an hour plus a limo rental. Given that Blanc was arguably THE only cartoon voice actor who was a household name even to this day, it's not surprising that he was able to charge such a fee for his services. (Thomas and Rick Moranis wanted him to voice Bob and Doug McKenzie's father in "Strange Brew" but the president of MGM balked at his fee. They eventually got him in the studio for an hour and lied to the studio president by saying "we were able to talk him down to $10,000 for the entire session.")
Actually Heathcliff's voice isn't all that original. Mel Blanc used similar voices on a lot of his earlier shows (especially his radio show) and Garfield's laugh is basically Yak-Yak's from The Perils of Penelope Pitstop.

That moment when Garfield stuff in the background changed into Heatcliff stuff made me unreasonably happy when I noticed it I really love your sets
I'm of an age where "Healthcliff and the Catillac Cats" was a staple of my childhood, and I remember nothing about it--character names, plots, jokes, nothing--except that the theme song fuckin' slaps.
Same here. I knew Heathcliff was the draw, but I loved the Catillac Cats more than I ever really should have. For a time I'd record reruns of that show, but only keep the segments featuring that secondary cast.
Oh yes, and that theme. The original version was "Cats & Co.," but later they rewrote the lyrics to put Heathcliff's name in it.
I loved that show as a kid but at different parts of my life I've thought that maybe the Catillac Cats were a fever dream

Quinton and Saberspark are high key on the same level of being furries, but that level isn’t enough to like the Cadillac Cats just because they’re sexy
Maybe it's Evil Quinton that's not a furry?
“How broken is your humor?”
Well when Quinton went into his ad read and finished it with Raid Shadow Legends, I laughed so much and so loud that I A) had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard and B) had my roommate tell me to quote “Shut the fuck up and go to sleep, it’s 2 in the fucking morning Montague.” Then proceeded to keep laughing but only more muffled because I find Raid Shadow Legends as a punchline and the sponsor at the same time so fucking funny. That’s how broken my humor is.
Mine is so broken that I started laughing hysterically immediately upon seeing the gravy helmet comics
So, Heathcliff and Garfield both couldn’t talk originally, but Garfield had thought bubbles, and they gave an actual voice to silent Heathcliff. Makes sense to me.
The mid-80s Heathcliff Cartoon was a staple for me as a kid, even though I'm a 90s kid. That's syndication for you, so all of my primary memories of Heathcliff is as something moderately amusing to watch while waiting for reruns of the Super Mario Bros Super Show or some such.
I really loved the German intro to that show when I was probably about eight years old.
Oh, and "Heathcliff" is of course that Catillac Cat with the white hat in my mind. Same goes for the shows as a whole.
Yeah, same here. I'm actually really glad he covered this b/c for a long time I thought I was the only one who remembered it.
And I swear I saw a really weird and cheap reboot in recent years
I remember as a kid I once got a DVD from a cereal box that had an episode of a Mario cartoon (don't remember which) and The Cadillac Cats on it
@@KuLaydMahn I'm pretty sure the current owners of DIC's library of work (DHX Media I think, but don't quote me on that) made a pilot or some such for the Catillac Cats/Cats & Co a while back, which DIC created, but they no longer have a valid license for Heathcliff as I recall. It's hard to search for info here though, as searching Heathcliff without specifying cartoon returns Wuthering Heights results and Catillac Cats and Cats & Co both just return pages upon pages about the '84 cartoon and it's related media.
