While I was making Arbuckle, I discovered a series of Garfield comics which had been lost for 40 years. Today on Quinton Reviews, we discuss Jim Davis’ unseen work. From Gnorm Gnat... To Jon.

this video is great and so interesting 💗
your name deservis to be put in the history books for this
I thought I saw you in a Wendy's yesterday but I looked again and it was some homeless guy who wasn't nearly as well kept as you are
I think you should mention the historian that helped you like in thank you in some way. If you haven't already.
Fun fact: Jim once wrote that Garfield was born in an Italian restaurant, with "snow falling like parmesan cheese" outside the window-despite the fact that Garfield was born in June.
I think this is him subtly referencing Garfield's true January birthday.
He's like Jesus, nobody knows his true birthday.
@@leiram8833
Quinton already made that joke.
Maybe he was born in Argentina, where it snows in June.
@@ob2kenobi388 Funny enough, the Garfield Origin was brought to life through "Garfield: His 9 Lives" as the first half of "Live No. 8". Even then, the second TV Special for Garfield was our first hint on the full origin.
“Bury me in cheese!”
Oh my god, you have to send that library historian a cake or something. The fact that they went digging up the Jon strips on their own when nobody even knew they existed is pretty amazing.
Local historians are super cool people
Crowdfunder for the Library
Yeah! I'm surprised they weren't credited or thanked at the end of the video. It sounds like their above-and-beyond effort is what made this whole thing happen. Super detective/genius library historian!
They probably didn’t want to be named or get attention drawn to themselves or the library (since Garfield fans would probably keep emailing and calling the place), but I’m sure Quinton is doing everything to thank them.
@@toetotipthatsabart5048 yeah, my thinking is given the historian a woman Quinton may have thought it better not to advertise her name and job on the Internet
Quick aside: librarians are badass and they will absolutely help you find whatever you're looking for. They're college educated professionals in the interdisciplinary study of Library Science, specializing in the Categorization, discovery, curation, archival, and research of media.
If you EVER need help finding something, look for a librarian.

Welcome to archivism.
The most obscure little efforts can have incalculable meaning one day.
Someone, somewhere, argued for the storage space for those old newspapers.
An ancient Greek read a comment in the margin of a book (shadow in a well) and was inspired toward a method of confirming that the world was round.
It’s likely on a reel
As an archivist, thank you! My guess is it's probably on a microfilm reel. That's how we keep our old local newspapers.
Can confirm as someone's who's worked in the field before.

You should write and direct the next movie for Garfield. You live and breath Garfield.
It would be the first Garfield movie to get above a 5/10 on IMDb

So from what I see , Norm was basically the Oswalt the Lucky Rabbit of the Jim Davis universe.
Oswalt was successful tho. At least enough for the Disneys to live off. It wasn't until hmWalt Disney's cartoonists walked off, taking the Oswalt copyright with them, that Walt and his remaining Cartoonists had to come up with Mickey Mouse
Wasnt Oswalt the work of a rival animation studio
@@qorso no, it was Walt's first big character, but the copyright was taken, so he made Mickey.

This is some entertaining stuff. I knew a little about Gnorm Gnat and the early days from a "Garfield 20th anniversary collection" book that I cherished as a kid and it's really cool to finally see a lot more.
Who was the historian who helped you find this stuff? Or did they request to remain anonymous?
my question exactly! This amazing discovery was clearly a joint venture.
He said it was Pendleton's town historian. He probably just found them online. Pendleton's website shows they have a Pendleton Historical Museum there.
She definitely deserves credit for rediscovering this.
Lasagna Cat has to make a come back for the Jon strips
They will... in another 7 years...
Those guys don't mind making fun of what has become a massive franchise for how dull the source material is. I don't know if they would do the same for what was at the time, a strip for a small newspaper that had little success.
I think they've spat enough venom at it by now. We know they hate Garfield and Jim Davis. What else is there to say?
@@TheTheninjagummybear It's not about what there is to say, but how many more insane ways they'll cook up to say it.
That said, I am more than happy with what we have now and the fact that they spent the better part of a decade just quietly brewing UA-cam channels and twitter accounts while sitting on the footage they were to unleash on everyone is just something that won't have nearly the same impact the second go-around.
This makes SexSurvey Results ending even more accurate. Jim Davis watched his creation surpass him in every way. Name included.
I sincerely hope that this video gains popularity. This is a huge discovery. It baffles me how the hell this knowledge went unknown for 40 years
I found something in the book "my laughable life with Garfield: the Jon Arbuckle chronicles". In the introduction, it mentions the "Jon" comic and shows early drawings of Jon, and surprisingly, a full comic strip from "Jon". I checked the date of the books original print and it was 2012. So "Jon" was released to the public at least once before this, but it was brief and I don't think anybody took notice. But your discovery was bigger because this book included only one strip, you found most of them! Good job and congratulations!
Forget Area 51. No discovery there will ever live up to this.
Miffed Akko Well true.
While ya'll storming Area 51, I will be storming Paws, Inc
New goal: Storm the pendleton library.

While the "Jon" version of the pipe strip is a little disappointing, you could see the kernel of madness that he'd eventually unleash unto the world. As if he had stumbled upon something unfamiliar and frightening, but didn't quite have the courage to put it to paper.

A... candy came? But what could this mean? As you know, a fandycane contains no nicotine, therefore is non- poisonous to cats. Yet it's amazing, isn't it, fascinating even, that originally, Garfield stole Jon's candy -- sugar, obesity, gluttony. Garfield was the fat greedy cat who fed off Jon the slim's sweets! Sweets, sweets, but of course -- the fat orange cat also saves Jon from its figurative poison. Garfield the cat had saved Jon once from figurative poison, and then, when the strip was remade, no, reborn, Garfield the cat saved John from literal poison! Why, I cried! I cried, cried, cried! When I came upon this revelation!

That's actually really cool. Good find on those 'Jon' comics, whoever your connection was. You might indeed be the luckiest Garfield fan alive, lol.
I knew someone that used to decorate their room in Garfield themed items. They had a Garfield clock, and phone, and calendar, ect. They put Garfield stickers on their car. You can have everything you own be Garfield branded...But you can't buy Jim Davis history, turns out. There is no moral in there, don't look for one. I was just remembering that one kid with the Garfield themed room.
I am sure somewhere there is a history book that has to be rewritten now
There is something strangely something hypnotic about how in focus the Star Wars rat bird is compared to Quintons face
Ladies and gentlemen, we've got a bruh moment of magnitude 10 on our hands.
Cool discovery! A little disappointed Gnorm didn’t end that way, just because I was curious what it would look like.
Noah Montgomery I argue that it may have ended that way. It might be a rejected strip that Davis saw as the ending and the paper wouldn’t print thus leading to have the half assed Merry Xmas strip.
Johnny Alias That’s possible.
Hey Quinton!
I live in Indiana, not very far from Pendleton. I drive through there multiple times a week while working. I’ve never been much of a Garfield fan, but I have actually heard of “Jon” before.
I work in the HVAC industry, and one day a couple years ago a customer whose house I was working at was talking to myself and a coworker about his collection of items in his man cave. My coworker asked about a Garfield sign he had, and he spun us the whole yarn about Jim Davis getting his start in Pendleton, then produced an old paper with a Jon comic in it. I had no idea that this wasn’t well known. Craziness.
I thought he ment the band Blondie at first and was really confused
Oh yes, this is gonna be a big one! Congrats on finding this amazing piece of history dude
"Blondie." I thought he meant the band...
6:51 if Jim Davis was such a genius, how did he miss the obvious opportunity to name Gnorms girlfriend “GNatasha”? I MEAN COME ON!

There's something so heartwarming about how much you love this strip, and the idea that something someone doodled years ago could one day mean so much to someone else
I like how that newspaper article used the phrasing "Garfield & Friends", since that became the title of the TV series.
Holy crap, I found somebody who was just as obsessed with Garfield as I was as a kid!! This also shows me how invaluable local libraries are
By the way, I have a book celebrating Garfield's 25th anniversary from 2003 called "In Dog Years I'd Be Dead: Garfield at 25". I just looked through it recently, and it features *some* early sketches of striple-less Garfield (like the one at 18:30). The book dates them to 1976, so everything checks out!

I am unironically jealous of you Quinton. This is like discovering a long lost tomb and being the first to explore it.
