I had some size 5 yarn I wanted to use for this hat. I made it for charity donation so the size of hat was not critical. I used size K hook. I found that you have to make a lot more stitches on the starting chain row. Make sure you make it as long as the hat length and as many rows as it takes to make circumference measurement. To test this pattern I made a small size. I used Lion brand Baby's First yarn. One skein is 3.5 oz. 120 yd. For a larger hat I suggest you buy to skeins of this size.

I can’t tell you how many times I would be following along and pull through and you would have 3 loops and I 2! This is hard to do. And I can’t figure out why!? I think maybe how the string is in front? Idk Thanks for uploading, I guess the smart people got it. 😭

I followed for a kid size using the same yarn and I tried 3 different sizes of hooks and tensions and is no way the written pattern would fit a kids head. I’ll need to use at least 1 more skein to complete the pattern which will require many more rows.

With it being such a simple pattern, really you’d just want to decide how tall you want the hat the. Keep making rows until it’s wide enough to fit on the head your making it for.
I am working on this same issue. I first tried pulling the stitches really tight, but wasn't satisfied with the outcome. My solution right now is to have hat right side out, using a stand of yarn and a tapestry needle make a stitch by putting needle through the stitch on the beginning row and under the stitch on the ending row. In other words 1 strand on first row an under 2 strands on last row. I hope this is clear enough and helpful. I will probably make this hat again and will watch for any suggestions for this issue.
