Southern California Offshore Tuna Fishing (1.5 day)
Gear: Daiwa Lexa 400 (50lb spectra and 20lb fluoro topshot) on Phenix 809H
Never let a deckhand touch your reel, anyone else on the boat yes, if your undersized gear on a bigger fish they don't care if they lose it they will horse it every time to either get it in quick or snap your line. They don't like when people use undersized gear for larger fish, too long drift and they can't reposition because of one person so they will grab your poke and snap off or get it in quick on purpose
Yup, had that happen to me once... deckhand politely took my rod and pulled the hook on a 100+ lbs yellowfin I had been fighting for the last 45 minutes 🥲
@@sloth7702 Thanks for the advice.
As they should have. Dont waste my 3/4 day cause some moron brought a 20# set up for a 40lb fish he wants to fight for 4 hours
Scandalous light gear everyone waiting on you
No shit, when he said it’s 20# I got pissed and I’m just watching. Dudes a fucking kook chassis tuna with a 20lb rig
“this is a comfortable setup”
“glad you’re very comfortable”
weird ass response
It deserves its freedom. Five men against one fish. One big fish.
im sure everyone was thrilled that you hooked up on 20lb test lol
I caught a 60 pound Bluefin on a Jigmaster with 25lb. Ande mono. It took me 45 minutes to land it on the Polaris Deluxe about 35 years ago.
Got 120lb Yellowfin on Penn 113H in about 45 minutes.
@@webmoss WOW!
@ We pretty much gunned after the fish to gain line until it starts to pinwheel below the boat. We used 50 lb mono which I think is key.
Yeah after fighting for two hours and all the line has been tested let’s horse it like an idiot! He was fighting that shit like he had 80 lb test on there no wonder why it popped
The reason he horsed it in is because people like this guy ruin trips by being out gunned with their tackle. 2 hr fight on a fish that could of been landed in 15-20 min tops if he had the right gear. Most likely the school of fish disappeared and he was the only one fighting a fish-burning precious fishing time. 2speed reel 40lb test that fish is landed in no time. Listen to let’s talk hook up radio and they say 20lb test has no place on a party boat. In other words only ignorant pricks fish that light of a line. Last year we were catching 60-80 lb bluefin at Clemente. Some asswipe did the same thing. Fought the fish for over an hr same result.
@@elsancho1375 yep 40 is the lowest you will ever need to go in order to catch finicky tuna. With 40 you can still safely fish around 12 lbs of drag, which is the minimum what it takes to get a fish up. Any less and you'll be there all day, effectively screwing over the other anglers who are wanting to catch fish. On a party boat, always go as big as you are capable of going, the name of the game is get bit, get the fish on the boat, and get right back down there.
I’m not saying that the guy fishing is correct, he’s an asshat for using a bass rod for bluefin. What I am saying is you waited that long might as well go all the way. That wait was for nothing now
As a deckhand I would hav cut the line when it was almost spoiled and then told the guy not to bring out another bass rod
“It’ll be a fun fight guys 🤓”
Bro really estimated 80lbs on a 20lb set up. I’m sure that thing was probably closer to 35# you just had no balls to fight it with that fresh water set up 🤣
Are u autistic that is a dream saltwater setup plus most bluefin are line shy
The longer the fight, the more chance he hook pops looks or be leader gets chewed off. Bluefin have pretty sharp teeth.
And hard mouths
Would you eventually had caught that?
Sorry to ask but: Why would you use a much weaker leader than your main line? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the stronger main line? I mean, if you are using 50lb main line and then 20lb leader, the weakest link are the 20lbs of the leader hence rendering "useless" the "extra" 50lbs of the main line.
I would say to at least match the capacity of the both lines.
In my case I use X capacity main line and Y>=X leader for higher capacity against abrasion, teeth, fins, etc.
Just saying.
Dang that sucks! If this doesn't sell ya on the Lexa then I don't know what will. Great Fight Bro 👊
I get that the captain said use light line, but that doesn’t mean you have to use a 20lb outfit. You can use a 60-80lb outfit and just use a 20lb leader. You would’ve landed that thing in 15-20min. Gotta be considerate for the other people on the boat. Nobody wants to wait over an hour cuz you decided to use bass gear
He said it was 50 pound with 20 top. Why do you think it’d be different? Cause I think a way tons of bf break off is cause anglers just use all braid or spec and a tiny top so the line can’t stretch like mono and all the built up tension breaks it but definitely curious to hear why u think it would have been different with this same kind of circumstances. Cheers and tight lines brotha🤙
Lol, a Lexa 400 is not bass gear. That is an extremely capable saltwater bait caster that is extremely popular on the west coast. I own 2 of them, and most YellowTail/small tuna charters will commonly have 10 or more on board as customer-owned gear.
@@BigNameJamesStuff If you want to wear yourself out and take an hour to land an 80lb tuna using the wrong gear go for it. Use a proper tuna setup and you’ll land it in half the time
@@rjc89sir I have a feeling they were fishing a smaller school and he just hooked onto a larger fish. A Lexa 400 will work just fine for anything under 30lbs. We've all accidentally hooked onto something larger on our smaller setups.
I did the same thing on the sea adventure last year. On my komodo 471 ..fought a 100 lb fish on 25 lb leader. Fought it for an hour. They missed with the gaff and clipped the line. I still counted the fish..it death rolled right up to the top.
I love how everyone wants to check the drag. I'd snap at someone for touching my line. I set my drag before we even touch the water.
Story of a lifetime! I hope you get another chance at another big one!👍🏾👊🏾🤙🏾
Its not pulling to hard that the fish was lost....BLUEFIN HAVE TEETH EVERY TIME THE FISH CHANGES DIRECTION IT DRAGS THE LINE OVER HIS TEETH TO THE OTHER SIDE.....the line basically gets chewed thru.......pull as hard as ya can b4 this happins....been doin this over 30yrs......
It’s 20 pound line, it’s an 80 pound tuna would you think it’s gonna happen it might as well go catch 150 pound salmon on the 20 pound line
Only trust your own eye scale.
It’s all about drag
Similar experience last year on my 2 day charter, difference is I was using a Shimano Tranx 400. After 2 hrs a Big Hammerhead grab the bluefin and broke me off.
Socal??
@@zaidbenitez8721 yes, SoCal
And what about the rest of the guys on the boat? Back in the day the deckhand would have broken you off on purpose.
Most of the fish around the boat were 15-30# range - hence the reason we were told to drop to 20#. The deckhands and the captain were fishing themselves for most of the trip. The captain was on his own fish for a good 1 ~ 1.5 hours, not sure if it broke off or he landed it.
There you go. The Captain called it. Not your fault. Happens.
Got a 120 yellowfin in the boat on 40# setup. Snapped the rod as they gaffed it and held the line with hands. 3+ hour fight.
Unbelievable why put out 20lb line. I only fish with Shimano speedmaster 16 2 speed, talica 16 2 speed with 80lbs spectra. 40 to 60lb fluorocarbon leader. I have been on 3 long range trips 10 days. 0nly buy the best gear and make sure you have solid connections. You don't want your fishing gear to fail you if you have a fish of a lifetime.
Dayum ya'll just put a good old fashioned gang bang train on the tuna...
Damn! I thought this was going to have a happy ending. WTF?
thoughts on phenix inshore m1 82 paired with lexa400?
@Grizzly Trout Fishing T.L.D. I ended up getting a lexa 400 5:1 and a 45lb BFT killed my reel
I wouldn't put anything in water unless it was a 2 speed and has up to 40 pounds of drag.
First off, you gear is not right on a party boat, on a private boat, I think that will be a lot fun. but the last deck hand, oh my, his fault for losing that fish for sure
We were on a school of 20-30# bluefin and they were line shy. 40# didn't work. The captain told everyone to drop it to #20, which was fine for most of the fish landed. I got "lucky" to get on conservative estimate an 70-80# fish. We got it within 15feet to the boat - but then it would take off again.
By the way, I fished the same setup - Phenix 700H w/ Lexa 400 for 25#-30# yellowtail with no problem. Of course yellowtail and bluefin fight differently. It is one of my favorite light setups - but it was no match for this fish. I wish I had my Talica 16II on that fish.
I feel if you are a private boat, and slow play the fish, you will get it. A lot more fun on light gear for sure.
@@HookGuru Man I feel you, having to explain each time how your situation led to your choice. Guys just don't read or watch, make false assumptions and jump to conclusions. I had similar experience for finicky tuna not biting and had to use spinning gear. Luckily I landed the fish after a broken reel, and deckhand spliced my line to a boat set up. Oh, the comments... All over the place. I don't see anything wrong posting the good and the bad of tuna fishing. It's all the experience we accumulate.
Goes to show a 20-40 lb setup could handle a 80 lb not very easily but still
I caught a 104lb sturgeon and a 49lb striped bass off of 20 lb test . Both fish took about 25 to 30 min each
Why would you even do that. 20 lbs for tuna. I would never do that.
I had same thing last year...
Sounds like a girls ex on the line at midnight lol
That was heartbreaking.
That reel is more than capable.
Do not bring a knife to a gun fight😊
Lexa are great reels but are not made to fish the size of fish. Daiwa and any other company won’t fix or replace a reel that has been fished in this manner anymore because it wasn’t designed for this kind of fishing. Yes it may work but just pisses everyone off. Fish a saltist 20 for 20lb if you want spools bigger and you have a better chance of not destroying your reel
That's what happens,...more often than not.
I had a similar experience, fought the tuna for 1.5 hrs, the captain asks for the rod and in 3 minutes loses the fish at the boat after thumbing the spool...smh. This was on the Mustang out of San Diego.
Went on the Mustang recently…didn’t really like the Capitan. The deckhands were awesome though.
The last deckhand lost it for you.
Jon B for real example of how to lose them every time!
What was the rod weight? Im trying to see how light i can go for heavier fish hah
I like the Phenix 809H rod a lot - it is rated 20-50#. I caught 30# yellowtails on this setup w/out any issues.
A bit under gunned! Seems and an avet with 80lb would be better for this style of fishing.
Where is the fish?! You lost it
Farmer in the Dell ain't that the truth that came with a broke you off or cut you off right in front of your face for fishing such a light set up. No tuna that was a black sea bass
Damn!
I was definitely outgunned for my gear.
It's selfish to fight with that light setup on a party boat. All the other fisherman have to wait while you try to finesse the fish in. Probably drifted far off the spot so nobody else was hooking up.
Exactly! This is the kind of shit you do when it’s your boat.
110% Capt should have set him a float on a dingy to battle his fish as he caught the current into Mexico. That wit at least line half the rating he should be using instead of screwing the 20 others that paid to catch fish and actually brought the right gear. Party boats are bring as hd as possible to ripping fish up and on boat rinse and repeat
I dont give a shit who gets upset. 💯 if capt says drop 20# and I hook an 80#bf while everyone else hooking 20#bf that's their personal problem. We can handle it bk at the landing
@@ptown_southerner shit we can handle it right there on the deck. I probably would've cut your line and you wouldn't have done shit about it.
Other people on the boat including the deckhands must have been pissed off at you for the time wasted using the wrong gear.
The fish wouldn't bite anything over 30lb and most were 20~30# size. The captain said to drop down to 20lb with #2 hook.
surely is...if I’m the captain I could have just turn the drag to the max and reel as hard as I can during in the early fight so as not to waste everybody’s time..using a bass set-up knowing you are fishing those grade of tuna is the dumbest thing to do...why use a knife in a gunfight especially on a party boat where there are other paying anglers with appropriate gears wanting to move on and fish? this dude is just wasting everybody’s time...😤😬
@@johnsmith-xd9ej this "bass gear" can handle some huge fish pretty well, plus i dont think it really matters if he needs a stronger rod/reel if the fish are only biting light line
@@anthonyhoppe9603 i agree the set up would work for some big fist, but u also need bigger space ( private boat) instead of charter where u waste everyone else time. :(
Listen just cuz the cap'n says go down to 20 lb doesn't mean you go down to Tua freaking bass setup you top shot 20 lb fluoro on a Cortes toratorium, or hell even a penn would be better than that setup
I spent 2.5 on my 100+ I got to surface 50-80 yards out before charging the boat swallowing the hook and cheering me off
Losing a quality fish sucks! What setup did you have? 2.5 hour fight must have been brutal.
Dam, how did you hear the cheers?
A Typical “THAT GUY”...bringing Knife into a Gunfight!!! Using a Bass Set-Up on a Tuna Trip on a Sportsboat is NO BRAINER😬😤
thats not a bass set up
@@LoFi-world920 yeah i agree but can we call it a large/swimbait bait set up? Lmao
That’s a heavy bass rod and stupid to do that with that size of tuna around. It pisses a lot of people off when someone does that. Fish the right gear for the right size of fish and you will land more and not have the crew and passengers upset with you.
No need electric pole to catch big tuna . I caught 90 pound BF tuna with swim bait & spinning reel using 25 lb test line..
@@hardygunawan2312 yea but how long did it take? And was it on a party boat with other passengers?
😢
