Fishing always requires a valid license. Whether you are actually catching anything, or keeping any fish or not. And California has a specific value for each species of fish that belong to their great state. (And they are very proud of them!). So, keep an eye on the date of expiration on your license (1 year from date of purchase) or things can get very ugly. I had my experience with them way back in 1989 and it has made a life long believer in me ever since. (And my officers were pretty cool in the end. Just doing their jobs.)
Fish don't belong to states... You don't need a fishing license in many circumstances in California, including some piers and charters. I'm not against licenses but at the rate we are required to get licenses and pay taxes soon the lady walking on the beach will need to pay for a special license. After all she is effecting the microbiology of the beach, which all belongs to the state of California, according to you.
Honestly I have alot of respect for game and fish officers, they are the only law enforcement officers that actually do their damn JOBS and are some how better at conflict deescalation than standard police officers. Strange enough I’ve been stopped way out in the wilderness where the nearest service road was a 3 day trek away and they were still polite and even gave me a lift out of the area I was in. I normally have a lanyard around my neck when I fish that holds my license though so I make the interaction brief.
I used to fish in San Francisco back in the late 90's/early 00's. I was checked by them a couple of times. Easy prey I guess. 😂 I always bought a licence with a Striped Bass sticker.
More than likely someone called it in. Always have your license on you and ready to show it to the wardens. You handled yourself very well. For sure they’d been watching you for a while. They do that everywhere.
The thumbnail made it seem like you were about to get a fine, but those guys were pretty chill. Seems like Florida patrols more than Oregon for fishing.
They definitely were "observing" you before you were approached. DFG are usually cool, but if you do have a license but not physically with you, you can still give them your DL# since it is linked to the DFG database. Always better to remember it. You handled their silly questions better than they could ask them.
Here in NH you can expect to have your papers checked no matter where you go - fishing, boating, snowmobiling etc. Just part of life, there’s no income tax or general sales tax so revenue from licenses/reg are taken very seriously. And I wish we had “cold” late November mornings like that haha ;-)
Might have been a call in. I got told up on in Santa Cruz just like that. But hey if you're doing even right. Show them the license and send them on their way.
Called it in for sure. People who live close to or on the beach feel that it is their beach. "Umm Hi theres a guy fishing on the beach and he looks really suspicious my dog was concerned and i almost dropped my starbucks..can you send someone to check it out thank you."
The California Fish and Game Code (FGC), section 7145 (a) requires that every person aged 16 and older who takes any fish, reptile, or amphibian must have a valid sport fishing license on his or her person or in his or her immediate possession. I’m guessing this was considered “in his immediate possession” since if it was in his pocket it would have been “on his person”.
Ya I’ve been asked before. One time over there loud speaker they asked me to hold up my license as They were above on the cliffs They could have been called or they were just in the area. Many times the look for poachers and probably just happen to come across you.
In my opinion, homeowners won’t get FnG out, calling in on someone fishing, since it’s not illegal to fish. Odds are, FnG was in the area and just happened to see you from the road and decided to check you, especially since they really don’t have much to do 😅 Most are pretty regular guys and gals, but few can have an attitude. They live out of their binoculars btw… makes it easier to observe potential law and code violations from a distance. My buddy got popped once fishing without a license and got a $275 fine. They watched him with binoculars and as soon as his line hit the water, they were on him. Good fishing video. Looks like you have a few good spots. Make sure you have something to measure your halibut and bass with. FnG will write you tickets for short fish for sure. Good fishing!
You no longer are required by law to hang it around your neck in a holder--but I still do, just makes it very handy if a Warden comes along and also, if it is in my wallet, it and the wallet can end up wet when surf fishing. So, I recommend in the plastic keeper and a cord around the neck.
I fish a lot down by county line/ neptunes/ deer creek, I see the wardens almost daily as they move up and down P.C.H, there spotting you from distance with binos and they also are using drones as well, be smart, buy your license! and have it with you, I never have had any issues with them and they have a hard job as it is, be safe, practice catch and release when you can and above all, teach another the fun of fishing!
I fish the same areas and have been approached countless times, never once had an issue. Answer questions, produce license, customary small talk, move on.
Take notice these wardens are extremely friendly and respectful. Location? Complexion? Spoke English? I have seen a hard nosed giving a big citation to a Samoan family. This said, majority is cool.
Local resident called. They deemed you fishing there is not a pleasing sight to them, even though it’s a public beach. They want you to out of their sight or view from their beach house window, if they can find any excuses. Law enforcement showed up, they have to act if someone calls in, but as long as you have your license and permit, it’s totally legal to fish on the beach.
Been fishing a lot of years and "normally" when you fish a place that's easy to get to, then there's a good chance you could get checked by game wardens. Best to have your fishing license with you all the time, you don't get the heart ache of fishing without one.
Funny when I was a kid you didn't need a license to fish the beach / ocean . Only if you were a commercial fisherman. Because they did not stock the ocean . Fish move up and down the coast and in and out to sea. After reading some down the list you are correct there are always those that screw it up for everybody else.
Some called it in. Personally, I answer a few questions and ask as many as I can. I am uneasy to see one officer leaning his hand on his service revolver. That would make me nervous.
I didn’t notice, but I’d be amazed if they were packing revolvers , every one else has gone to semi auto years ago. but having packed one for a living , I can tell you it’s not a threat to lean on the but of the weapon , just a habit . And yes, I imagine some butt wipe called him in . Love it when they do that to me , my surf cart holds 14 rods I’d make the snow flakes think a forest of rods in front of the house.
Why did they want to know how long he has been out there and if hes fished there before? Someone should hold a fishing event outhere to piss off the locals.
They spotted you. They park up on them cliffs and look down the beaches with Binoculars. I know the area pretty good and I would eat the fish from there... Maybe..
One time i was fishing in Ventura and I parked close to the fish and game truck. While I was fishing he checked everyone but me. He was talking to lifeguards and I asked why he never asked for my license? He said " I know you have one" . Do you think he ran my plate on my car to find out? I have never been able to figure it out. He confiscated one guys nice pole Not sure what the guy did and wrote a ticket to a guy on a jetty. The Fish and game guys are magic they pop out from nowhere.
Thanks for the comment. My guess F&G never checked you because you had all the right gear and they assumed you knew what you were doing - and had the proper license. I usually just bring my bare bones setup when I go surf fishing b/c I don't keep the fish - just catch and release.
I get approached by game wardens at least when i expected. I'll be surf fishing and game wardens pop out of nowhere. Game wardens are like ninjas knowing the fisherman's blind spots when they approach. Other and that, GWs have been cool with me and just checking to see if i have my fishing license.
The people living in those beach front houses most likely called F&G. They like to think they own that stretch of beach in front of their house but it's a public beach. Some of them get really moody about it.
Another point is that somebody in that community had enough PULL to have the CORRECT AGENCY to address it with such SPEED!! "Stay out of Malibu Lebowski !"
Always carry your license. Southern California is short handed with fish and wild life wardens so it’s a good thing they show up. We have lots of knuckle heads sorry to say it but most are Asians or south Americans who are poaching.
That's a homeowner call dude. Lmao I deal with that here where I'm to the south of you too. We only have one "Warden" who is a super good guy that tells me when he gets complaint calls.. most residents know, they just do it to flex and harrass and think they own more of what's behind their backyard than the public does because they spent 12M + on the front row.
Those were some nice perch! I havent been after them in a very long time! I am on DGFs bad side lol , lets just say salmon have to be hooked in the mouth to keep XD nice video man
Spotted you. The homeowners are used to people so chances are they don't have a bone to pick with you. The *surfers* , now that's an entirely different story.
Happens to me all the time in Monterey near del monte beach I'm killing the ,perch limits than the lady or dude with poodle fellows me I put fish in my bag she on phone all of a sudden 30 mins later how you doing sir , you have your license, somebody called
Looks random to me. I’ve been asked for my license a few times in the most unassuming places. Even if it was called in, the good thing is you’re legit. Now the DFG is your ally! They can go back and say you’re fishing within the law. The takeaway is always have your license handy!
How far should you cast to catch surf perch? I'm pretty new to fishing and I've caught 0 fish the past three times I've gone. I use a berkeley sand worm like the one you used in the video with a standard high low rig.
The high low is a good setup - I suggest you use a 2oz pyramid sinker as the pyramid sinkers stay better in the surf (compared to round sinkers). I try to cast out about 20 yards in the water. Wait a couple minutes and reel in - wait again. Been using sandcrabs (aka sand fleas) as my bait, but in winter they are not always easy to find - so Berkley sandworm is a good alternative. If the spot doesn't produce - try moving down the beach 30 yards and try again. Once you find a spot where you catch, most likely there will be many more. Don't get discourage - perch are fun to catch - keep practicing. Once you catch perch - you can start targeting corbinas, sharks, and the ultimate catch from the shore - a legal halibut :)
I’m pretty new too, but have been going with my neighbor who has a lot of experience and we’ve been using squid on 2 hooks with a steel lead and pyramid sinker. So far I’ve caught mostly croakers and small leopard sharks. Also some stingrays and shovel nose rays. I’d highly recommend squid for bait, especially if you’re fishing after dark.
Someone from the house clearly called you in. Im also curious why you feel its too polluted to eat? I ate some mackerel out of Hermosa the other week. I know about the DDT dumpsite from the 1940s to the 1970s but is there other concerns? I thought as long as your not eating bottom feeders you should be good.
Most fish migrate and don't spend that much time in one area. The fish that are on the do-not-eat list like white croaker spend their entire lives in one small area.
Regardless if they called it in it’s really good to see them out there keeping poachers from killing It for everyone. Majority of the Wardens here in Southern California are freaking super cool and friendly and ain’t nothing wrong showing we comply with our fishery’s laws good catches.

Thanks - I'll give it a try
@@cstarsfly Oh, I agree! It’s just those boys in khaki that stopped by didn’t see it that way at all.
@@driftless1870 There we can concur lol.
correction ,in california a fishing license is valid from January 1 thru December 31 no matter when it purchased
@@rondailey9574 That’s a nice improvement since then.
Nice officers , they doing their jubs , one unhappie people live in the houses call police , nice video , thank's for share .
Yes they did call on you man that crazy
What a bunch of numbnuts. The dude was grilling you like you were robbing a home!
Yeah, One of the beach owners called it in lol. All n all a nice day.
Definitely some melting snowflakes called in on you !!!!!
Im glad fish and game are out there.
The DFG in SoCal is uncanny. Just when you least expect it, they show up.
Most deftly some call it in are in Malibu past puerco cyn. They done to meet to
Did you use a donut for bate for those 2 you caught?
LOL.
Hahaha
Might have been a call in. I got told up on in Santa Cruz just like that. But hey if you're doing even right. Show them the license and send them on their way.
Should plan a mass fishing day !!! Just saying and sign me up
Called it in for sure. People who live close to or on the beach feel that it is their beach. "Umm Hi theres a guy fishing on the beach and he looks really suspicious my dog was concerned and i almost dropped my starbucks..can you send someone to check it out thank you."
Be aware out there. In Texas you must have your license on your person if approached. Good luck
@Ovais Malik they got rid of that rediculous rule here in Cali
The California Fish and Game Code (FGC), section 7145 (a) requires that every person aged 16 and older who takes any fish, reptile, or amphibian must have a valid sport fishing license on his or her person or in his or her immediate possession.
I’m guessing this was considered “in his immediate possession” since if it was in his pocket it would have been “on his person”.
The license is the number not the paper.
Ya I’ve been asked before. One time over there loud speaker they asked me to hold up my license as They were above on the cliffs They could have been called or they were just in the area. Many times the look for poachers and probably just happen to come across you.
Glad to see them checking for fishing licenses. So many poachers out there.
Binoculars 👀 not much to do as a Game Warden in Malibu but look at nice cars 🚗 on PCH and drive around in circles.
Snobs called in... how dare you enjoy yourself on MY beach
Eastside Vallero fishing the fearless crowd!!!
You're uneasy ? Then stay indoors snowflake !
They likely saw you on the numerous beach cams along the coast but he did have binoculars.
Why did they want to know how long he has been out there and if hes fished there before? Someone should hold a fishing event outhere to piss off the locals.
Nothing but old hags!
F&w are always patrolling those beaches from Malibu
Especially during fall lobster season
One of them rich old Jews snitched on you they are a pain in the ass
@@HookGuru Yeah Im catch and release as well. Like you said in the video to polluted
Always have it on you!
I don't see a problem. A license is required they are doing their job checking for a license he had his license day ended well.
Doing there job....personally I don't like it when officer has hand on gun
Those were some nice perch! I havent been after them in a very long time! I am on DGFs bad side lol , lets just say salmon have to be hooked in the mouth to keep XD nice video man
Yes, they do come to check sometimes.
Spotted you. They actually do their job.
I think someone called it in to many houses and I'm pretty sure lots of nosy people
Someone called for sure. There wouldn’t be 2 for a random check!
There are a lot of idiots in So. Cal. Some think you are in a santuary, some say you can't keep fish, some just don't want people fishing.
Yep ..... someone dropped a dime on you ! Someone from one of those million $ homes didn’t like you using their fence as a rod rack ! 😆
Spotted you. The homeowners are used to people so chances are they don't have a bone to pick with you. The *surfers* , now that's an entirely different story.
Happens to me all the time in Monterey near del monte beach I'm killing the ,perch limits than the lady or dude with poodle fellows me I put fish in my bag she on phone all of a sudden 30 mins later how you doing sir , you have your license, somebody called
it's Malibu, someone called it in....i heard they once even bulldozed the sand, to keep public beach, private,
Tomorrow is free fishing day guys September 4th! Flood that spot and show them 😆😆 I might go and give a few birds lololol
Looks random to me. I’ve been asked for my license a few times in the most unassuming places. Even if it was called in, the good thing is you’re legit. Now the DFG is your ally! They can go back and say you’re fishing within the law. The takeaway is always have your license handy!
Show me what your using what hook and recommend on bait sir and I'll fillow
Those guys were called on you.
Good to see them in that area they need to be around more so many poachers
I'm sure the helicopter was coincidental
That was for the teenagers riding dirt bikes in the riverbed, you know, swat, k-9 tactical unit for extraction & helicopter so they can't get away. 😊
