I truly believe that Doug has an ongoing love/hate relationship with Porsche (the corporation) that stems from him working there. It’s like, he can appreciate and respect the cars, but sometimes he goes off on the brand.
He's right. In the mid 90's at 18 years old I bought my 1st car; a 1973 Porsche 914 with a 2 liter. Back then a decent driving 914 was around 2k give or take. Now I see similar 914s on Craigslist for 15-25k. The original 914-6s can fetch over 50k whereas I saw them for 10-15k when I was younger. That's insane b/c affordability is what I loved about that car, plus the handling was great.
BMW is by far the most overrated. Absolute junk. Every BMW owner Ive ever known IRL in the last decade (3) each spent 2 years coping and lying to themselves about how their car was actually reliable if you just do basic maintenance (as they dump thousands of $ on replacing overpriced garbage plastic parts) and then they eventually regain their sense of reality, give up and dump them at the first opportunity. Not one has purchased another BMW so far.
Why do people buy Benzes when Lexus exists? Toyota obsesses over quality while European carmakers seem to care nothing about it and only about how they can engineer their cars to break often so they can then bilk their customers for insane repair costs. It's insulting.
I wouldn't say Porsches are overrated, but they surely are overpriced as hell; 190k for an 80s 911? I might better buy a 997 Turbo or even a newer 718 Cayman for that price.
For me, the most overrated car brand is Toyota. One of the only advantages it has among other car brands (including its Japanese rivals) is reliability. And that's all the advantage it has as compared to others. Other brands such as the new Hondas, Mazdas, and Hyundais/Kias have a better interior design as compared to Toyotas. If I would buy a car with decent reliability, decent tech, and good interior quality, I would go for Mazda even though Toyota is a more reliable option.
For me, my 2006 Porsche Cayman S is the sweet spot of the brand. Not overpriced and a lot of fun. Non car people can't believe it's as old as it is. The design is timeless.
Inb4 the morons saying "Toyota is boring" SC300, SC400, SC430, IS300, Supra, GT4, and many more cars are some of the greatest cars of their time and they came from Toyota.
Lol... you do realize that Mercedes was the first car ever made? Right? Mercedes also isn't owned by another manufacturer. The fact that Mercedes makes their own transmissions and used to print the best service manuals for everything imaginable on their cars make their history much richer than Porsche's history ever will be. Porsche builds toys. Mercedes builds practical cars that you can drive everyday and not have to worry about where and when you drive.
The thing with the air-cooled Porsches are that they are different in terms of design, feeling etc market equals offer and demand so people is looking for this kind of car because there are no other cars that can offer that distinguished design, between cars that they look mainly the same. Design and pureness are not the norm nowadays.
Collector value is meaningless. The same people who get suckered in to buying a $20k car for $200k are the same ones who think wearing Versace makes you cooler.
I’m a Porsche guy and he’s right. It’s horrible, terrible and stupid that these cars are going for the money they are. Literally about to sell mine and get an MX5. Tired of the maintenance anyways.
I totally agree with Doug. And the bad part is, it is not just 70s and 80s then-entry-level Porsches that are now in 2020s very expensive, there are plenty of garbage cars from the 70s and 80s that are selling for crazy money, given the fact that they are crapy Fords, Opels, VWs etc. At least here in Europe.

I truly believe that Doug has an ongoing love/hate relationship with Porsche (the corporation) that stems from him working there. It’s like, he can appreciate and respect the cars, but sometimes he goes off on the brand.
Most overrated is range rover
He's 100000000000000% correct
For me its ferrari
Thank you Doug for speaking out so us normal folks can maybe buy an aircooled 911 one day again lol
Every 911 owner thinks they have the next high dollar 911. That’s issue
Bro really said overrated and didn't mention the Supra
I don’t even really like Doug, but he’s right about this.
Back in 1970, $12,000 was about the buying power of $100,000 today. Remember guys keep up with inflation.
Nobody would pay $12k for a car in 1970
It prolly sold for 2-3k at most in 1970
He’s saying they sold for 12k in the 90’s when he was a kid
You’re wrong. It’s so pure!
i wish i could say any of those things
'iv owned the most mercedes'😩
BMW is by far the most overrated. Absolute junk. Every BMW owner Ive ever known IRL in the last decade (3) each spent 2 years coping and lying to themselves about how their car was actually reliable if you just do basic maintenance (as they dump thousands of $ on replacing overpriced garbage plastic parts) and then they eventually regain their sense of reality, give up and dump them at the first opportunity. Not one has purchased another BMW so far.
these comments r annoying lol merc may be overrated but the question was what’s His favorite not if his favorite is overrated
This is Dougs way of devaluing the old 911s so that he can hop on the train as well 😅. I salute you Doug as Im looking to get a turbo 964 under 100k 😂
Doug is absolutely rigjt!!! These old Porsches are amazing but the sum of their parts are no way worth 200k
Couldn’t agree more. Never understood the Porsche appeal. They’re just souped up beetles 😬
Can't agree more 🤘
If you look at MY purchase history, my favorite brand is Toyota. I've purchased 1 Toyota. Because it's a Toyota.
Why do people buy Benzes when Lexus exists? Toyota obsesses over quality while European carmakers seem to care nothing about it and only about how they can engineer their cars to break often so they can then bilk their customers for insane repair costs. It's insulting.
I'd say it's because the only thing exceptional about Toyota and/or Lexus is their reliability. Everything else about them is mediocre at best.
Doug’s a LEGEND, so happy for him (and the new Carerra GT in the background!)
Porsche is just perfect in every way it’s absolutely amazing
Glad someone said it as far as I can tell looks like a mildly improved Beetle frame under them
I wouldn't say Porsches are overrated, but they surely are overpriced as hell; 190k for an 80s 911? I might better buy a 997 Turbo or even a newer 718 Cayman for that price.
Bro buying Mercedes and saying Porsche is overrated. They both are extremely overrated and terrible car brands.
Yet, a two door G Wagen convertible sold on Cars And Bids for $350k isn’t overrated.
For me, my 2006 Porsche Cayman S is the sweet spot of the brand. Not overpriced and a lot of fun. Non car people can't believe it's as old as it is. The design is timeless.
Shoutout Toyota gang. Everyone with a Toyota knows affordable reliability takes the W errtime
Inb4 the morons saying "Toyota is boring" SC300, SC400, SC430, IS300, Supra, GT4, and many more cars are some of the greatest cars of their time and they came from Toyota.
As a Porsche fan, they are insanely overpriced
Just proves my point of how Porsche has more history than Benz 🤷♂️
Lol... you do realize that Mercedes was the first car ever made?
Design and pureness are not the norm nowadays.
rich car guy cannot appreciate a good driving car and thinks horsepower = fun. average Mercedes owner
Nah torque is fun which merc have plenty.
Collector value is meaningless. The same people who get suckered in to buying a $20k car for $200k are the same ones who think wearing Versace makes you cooler.
Mercedes probably the best car brand he's right
Toyota is the best car brand.
It's the father of all cars, the car that inspired others, and the first car that ever existed.
@@triple7marc Beaks easier than kia
I’m a Porsche guy and he’s right. It’s horrible, terrible and stupid that these cars are going for the money they are. Literally about to sell mine and get an MX5. Tired of the maintenance anyways.
Meanwhile Merc overrated af😅
I totally agree with Doug. And the bad part is, it is not just 70s and 80s then-entry-level Porsches that are now in 2020s very expensive, there are plenty of garbage cars from the 70s and 80s that are selling for crazy money, given the fact that they are crapy Fords, Opels, VWs etc. At least here in Europe.
Tesla is overrated
He's completely right, the fact that 944s are selling anywhere over 10k is fucking hilarious. I'd never in my life own a 944 unless it was LS swapped and had the entire wiring system changed.
Buys mercedes his whole life and thinks Porsche not worth the hype💀 he got it mixed up lol
