Thanks for the info. I had a suit jacket I had planned to wear with jeans and after trying everything on, I felt it didn’t look appropriate. Your video confirmed this to be true.
Great piece, Brian. I appreciate the tone of inclusiveness - good job taking the snobbery out of style. One of your trademarks. As an interesting follow-up, I would like to see you cover what pants (or trousers) are appropriate to wear with the Blazer vs. the Sport Coat if there are helpful guidelines.
Thanks, Garth. That's a pretty broad topic and so dependent on many factors. Outfit videos are a bit tough to shoot right now since Rob and I can't get together. Will put it in the hopper though.
Depends on the colour of the sport coat / blazer, but I have a charcoal sport coat I often wear for work, and I usually match it with darker coloured trousers or chinos, often black or dark blue, but brown or dark olive green would probably work too (yet to try).
A random question: What do you think about Mr. Bean's signature outfit? Greenish brown tweed sport-coat with brown elbow patches, white dress shirt, dark brown trousers, red silk tie, black semi brogues (I think) and a digital watch. To me it's actually a decent business casual outfit, but I want your thoughts on it. P.S: What additions would you make to Mr. Bean's outfit to stylistically elevate it? And would you personally wear his outfit?
Funnily enough I noticed that his outfit is a decent business casual outfit. Lose the elbow patches and nail the fit and it’s something I’d be happy wearing.
The elbow patches only add to the outfit in my opinion. As for the fit, it's actually a decent fit for the 90s where everyone was obsessed with the baggy and supposed "power suit" and everything was 6 sizes too big. Even for today's standards the fit looks good, but Mr. Bean has the problem of always wearing his jacket unbuttoned which takes away from the silhouette of his outfit.
Two things I appreciate in your videos. a.) You respect our time and keep your videos short with zero fluff. b.) You have a very inclusive (read not snobby or elitist) approach. This is great when you are trying to educate people. I have almost never had the chance to wear a suit. In fact, almost 100% of my adult life has been spent in cargo shorts - I work, work out, and play in them; sometimes I even sleep in them. I don’t see this changing moving forward. But despite my life’s circumstances (and consequently my sartorial choices), I find your videos about suits informative and enjoyable. Nice work. And thank you 🙏🏻
Nice and succinct explanations Brian! IIRC in Korea, most of the sales reps I ran in to used the term "jacket" and "blazer" for non-suit jackets interchangeably, with no problems to be had. Though knowing the differences and using the terms more correctly does help with recognizing who's interested in men's wear. Unrelated, those thighs on those men at 1:53 are quite impressive! - Han
Good explanation. People make mountains out of a mole hill. Mix anything you want if you think it looks good to you personally. If someone has an invitation event, it's up to the person spending the money to make the rules. People who whine about this need to have their own event with their money.
Thank you for sharing and making this video during this pandemic time Bryan. We appreciate you and support your doing . Hope you and your wife stay safe as always. Love the bearded by the way .😉👍🏻🙏🏻
@@hespokestyle Yup. Blazer: where is your boat? A sport coat is just a jacket. And a suit jacket is just weird if you wear it without the trousers, although many would even compliment you for dressing up a bit.
I used to wear my suit jacket with jeans or chinos and I look back and cringe (Suit supply's Washington fit), but my Tagliatore sport coat (they call it a blazer) is perfect for everyday casual wear. I always make sure to say the correct terminology, but I think that in a matter of decades the term sport coat will be antiquated or become completely synonymous with blazer only because many companies use the term blazer, but that's just my thoughts. Perfect summary, Brian! Short, sweet, and to the point
As a thin and short man i usually hate sports jackets and even blazers. They are always too bulky on me . I Know its for that you can wear underneath something but still dont work. I usually opt for slim fitted suits jackets but with colour and fabric that can go well with jeans. And i usually choose suit jackets that are more similar to blazers(notch lapels, not to shiny material ) . I notice that single breasted, slim fitted navy suit jacket with dark denim look superb. And i try this match Because of your great article about that . Cheers
He Spoke Style Yeah, in that case it really made sense to keep it simple and not exaggerate the length of the video. Would love to see another „how to style ...“-video in the future!
Thank you for this video. I did not know there was a difference between a blazer and sport coat. As usual, I learned something new from you. Keep up the good work, you're one of my favorites!
Nice photos you included in this Brian. I was just wondering, since you like Daniel Day-Lewis, have you seen There Will Be Blood and if you have what did you think of it
those frames really work on you man, looking great! and that beard too. it gives you a very different look than the clean-shaven, gentleman-looking Brian that we are all used to seeing! but i gotta disagree with you about ralph lauren looking good wearing a suit jacket with jeans - at least in that particular photo haha
I'm searching to know the difference. Trying to find out what kind of jacket my husband purchased. Bought without pants, but was there a pair of pants at the store that matched? I don't know what a jacket with *more structure" means. Conservative color? It's black. How to tell if one is more formal. No padding. Matching buttons. Can a tie be worn with a sport jacket? Still very confused.
When it comes to Navy Blazers it seems Hopsack and Fresco are frequently recommended to provide texture and less shine found in Suit Jackets. However Birdseye and Nailhead (also textured/lower sheen) seem like they would work as well, but more often seem to be recommended for a suit. Can nailhead/birdseye work for both a suit and a blazer ?
Okay, so my question here is regarding Steve Harvey's video advice about owning i think it was 5 complete matching suits with 2 dress shirts that was white and cream color for each. What I don't understand is he is saying you could mixn'match all 5 suits and 4 dress shirts any way you want it and you cannot mess it up. I tried that before and i got negative comments back on the mismatch clothing. I don't remember what it was but it was too embrassing for me to not care for it. Nowadays i see blazers, sports coat, and suit jackets getting mismatched with all sorts of other clothing. To me, i am wondering how in the world are they managing that? Like it doesn't look professional enough. example just a business casual or a smart casual and it looks weird. As for the semi-formal mismatching that is where i am confused too. Is the advice that Steve Harvey gave regarding 5 suits and 4 different dress shirts making a combination of 75 total outfits, is that even viable? Like it isn't might even be the same brand, fabric and style but he is saying it all goes. I always though the principals of a complete suit MUST stay with its matching pants &/or vest. Could you assist on clarifying that or providing more details to it so it makes sense and allows me to feel confident in mix n' matching them? Thank you.
It looks like you cut your jacket lengths to first thumb knuckle or little shorter. May depend on a fabric but do you generally use the 'first thumb knuckle' rule for most of your jackets? how do you decide what length is appropriate for a jacket?? (e.g. blazer vs suit jacket).
Please help me 😭 I have an interview.. I'm not a suit guy, but I do like blazers and stuff.. I want something formal or "casual formal", what should I wear? I'm really confused between blazers, sports jackets, suit jackets etc. What should I wear with a jeans for example? Thanks!!

Feel that is almost like folks that nowadays wear sneakers with suits, something that probably wouldn’t have occurred back in the past century.

He didn’t mentioned Apple‘s, he didn’t mention shoulders, he didn’t mention venting in the back of the jacket to allow for hip room. He didn’t mention buttons. The way they appear across the front like a two button or three button. He didn’t even touch up on the fact that generally blazers are double breasted meaning they crossover around the waist line creating more buttons, which is really a lot busier across the front with a formal look of buttons. This is a horrible distinction between the three. Because he didn’t want to offend anyone. Stop talking about things via offensive. Especially Clothing for crying out loud.
