6:37 "the gearbox is so engaging, not as quick as a PDK but WHO.GIVES.A.!@$%?" i think this is an excellent summary of why car enthusiasts love manuals and will always love them
it's a little perk to reward dedicated Porsche buyers. make something good (by making it with stuff everyone already said is bad and don't want), call it "pure", give it to those customers who'll make 30% or more later by reselling it, then give the average customer whatever the latest gimmick is because they don't know what the want and they'll be happy with anything the review channels like this or motor trend are the only way anyone will ever have an opinion of the car, and even those seem like lies now (they'll talk about how amazing the huracan was with no flaws, then when the 2wd model comes out they reveal the awd one actually sucked) a person who wants a good Porsche driving experience, just buy an older air cooled one and enjoy it for what it is
I almost didn't watch this review because I'm sick of all the press that limited run cars get after they're already sold out. I'm sure more magazine articles and video reviews get created than examples of the actual cars. Good to see Mr XCar acknowledge the frustration would-be buyers must feel.
Lars C70 There's a poll currently on Rennlist (biggest Porsche GT3/RS forum online) on what gearbox people are getting for their 991.2 GT3 and over 60% are going to get the manual. GT3 buyer's are very different than the people who buy Ferrari's and Lamborghini's (or R8's) in what they want from a car and how they are going to use them, so I think the "no one buys manuals anymore" can't really be directed at Porsche's GT buyers. I think they were also the one's who screamed the loudest when the 991 GT3 was PDK only, Ferrari and Lamborghini owners barely cared in comparision when those companies scrapped their manuals.. So people screaming manuals are indeed the people who buy the cars in this case.
Lars C70. I don't have any statistics but I do hang out with Porsche people on a regular basis and have been for some 35 years. I tried a PDK for 2 years and went back to a manual. Yes the PDK is faster but it removes a major component of the driving experience for many of us. Sometimes things go in cycles and auto vs manual transmissions for some marques might be cycling. It's also a generational thing where the younger guys never even learned to drive a standard. The other issue with the 911R is the price gouging. If I could have bought one at MSRP or lower (like with every car I have ever bought) I would have gotten the cash together somehow.
One other observation is that the vintage vehicle market, which by all measures has been red hot for a while, is a manual transmission market. In some ways that is an indicator of demand for the manual transmission driving experience.
I love the 911R. So much so that I bought what I could afford my white manual 12 GTS. My Herringbone seats are on the way. The R of course is more and perfection to me, but unobtanium...I am perfectly happy. Thanks for a great review. I am picking up what you are laying down sir.
Chris Harris does a better job Harry Metcalfe does a better job albeit in a very different manner. But he does ok. If he hadn`t i wouldn`t be watching....
ikr... but most its just sad that people who buy the PDK ones r missing out on the manual gearbox... dontget me wrong, i love PDK but only prefer it to on insanly fast cars eg turbo S or gt3RS... i think normal GT porsches should always be manual
It's not that they artificially restrict supply that bothers me, it's how Porsche in particular decide who gets what. When Ferrari say a car is invite only (Porsche afaik, never admit to this or having 'preferred customers') it's invite only, which is fair enough because that process is done in Maranello at Ferrari proper. The invitation process for Porsche is done by the (franchised) dealers who aren't accountable to anyone, which might be alright if so many of these cars didn't end up for sale on Porsche's own 'used' car finder within a week or so of being registered at a massive markup - supposedly just after the GT4 had been released there were 37 registered in the UK and 16 were listed for sale. The dealer gets the initial profit, then double dips when the speculator they knowingly sold the car to sells it on at a profit over list.
A friend of mine bought one of these from a dealership in Germany with less than 1000 miles on the clock, he took it around the Ring then drove it back to England 👍🏾
I'm not a massive fan of Porsche's, I'll be honest. However, I wish there were more reviews like this. Reviews where the experience of the car is put before the price, or the 0-60, or the shift time of the gearbox. It really makes me happy to know there are still great reviewers like you out there among all the just boring, brochure reading reviewers.
I own a manual, older, RWD Porsche and it makes me happy everyday... I would never spend the kind of money a 911R goes for. You can still be a huge Porsche "enthusiast" and not follow the modern day hype. This car is overpriced period. If I went more modern I'd have 997.2 or cayman GTS
Soccermom 6699 Damn I'm gonna try to find some of those stickers for my kia rio, after all,we all know they add like 500 hp if the stickers don't match the car and look ricey ,gonna get some of those like $30 wheel covers from the nearest walmart, should improve my launch yo.
aSenatorial Damn,so the sticker option won't work for my rio,so I'm gonna have to import a spoiler and wide body kit from korea, not as good as overnight parts from Japan, but it'll have to do,might order a massive exhaust with a fake blow off valve to attach to the exhaust. With all those parts,I should be pushing 2,000 hp easily, all going through the front wheels of course.
a snip, since they're being offered online for a million in whatever local currency exists (that'd be pounds, dollars and euros; not so much yen or Zimbabwean loo roll)
I saw one of those in white with the green stripes in my local Porsche Dealership a couple of years ago before Covid. If I knew what I know now about the 911R & had the bucks, I would have bought it on the spot assuming it had the optional lightened flywheel
Ridash it is all Porsche bullshit marketing. Wait a year and buy the new GT3 with stick, air conditioning and radio. The 911R is just a niche car for Millionaires; all 911Rs were sold to 918 Owners first.
Nasser Mohd nice! The cars will end up in garages, resold and never driven. Once the new GT3 comes out with optional manual shifter, nobody will care about the 911R.
Is it just me or does anyone else hear a bit of Clarkson, Hammond and May all put together in the way he speaks and reviews cars? This man has got the same personality and charms
This might not sit well with Porsche nerds, but a real-world alternative to this car is the Honda S2000. Honestly: 9000rpm redline, naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive, 6-speed manual 'box, sounds insane, looks great and you can lower the roof if you want. good observation Allen, I agree. Singer is the hero in pushing Porsche to listen to drivers and and not just bean counters talking about how many beans they save by making PDK the only choice to customers.
No, it doesn't! And who the fuck is "Singer"...?? Porsche gives a shit on this little Frankenstein-911-maker. This car exists because there was a 911R in the past... In Germany we would say at this point: Du Schlaumeier... completely wrong!

El Kimpo 991 R was 400k from Porsche, since they were all sold out before they were made, they can only be found in auctions and the price is way higher than 400k. Still probably not in Pagani territory. 10-15 years from now the 911 R will be far more expensive. It's an investment car and you won't see them on the road no matter how fun they are to drive.
The 911R makes me wonder: what if Ferrari applied the same recipe back when their berlinettas were still naturally aspirated? I mean, imagine a 458 Speciale with a manual gearbox. Sweet Christmas!
And yes, why can't they make these cars more accessible or at least toned down versions. for example, when they do the GTS, just take all the sound deadening out and put some of the lighter weight bits on it. Doesn't need any more power than the standard GTS, but the noises, the lighter feel etc makes the car feel a little more characterful!
I love all things Porsche! Porsche is legend. Porsche is icon. Porsche is auto. The limited 911R builds matter not. Even if Porsche made 500K units, it would still be unattainable. What some of these manufacturers need to do is reconnect with the EVERYDAY man. There will always be high end buyers, but why cater only to them all the time? Want to impress me Porsche, Ferrari etc? Build a quality, fast, affordable car like you did before your britches got big; when you were struggling to make it like so many of us out here. Ah well.... I guess that's what youtube and the Internet is for now. To look at things I will probably never be able to afford.
In the U.S. it's very difficult to find a proper manual gearbox. I know in the UK they are absolutely everywhere. I wish I lived in England so I could enjoy the better choice. Way too many American's don't know how to drive manuals or are too lazy to shift. If I had the money this Porsche 911 I would be on the top of my short list of cars to buy. The only thing Porsche really needs to do now is to offer this manual transmission on the 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S. Thanks.
How does the driving " Experience " of this car compare with a manual stock(cheapest) 911 with maybe only a suspension option upgrade or so( 4 whl steer?)......I would bet that a bare bones light 911 is pretty sweet on public roads. I'm late to the party so this has probably already been said...... Great job - thanks
I know someone who had the means to buy a GT3 RS, the car was still on Porsche's builder, he went to buy one he was told no you can't have one. You need to have bought other Porsche cars (basically they want you to blow your brains out on the Panamera's etc first). Anyways, he took his money across the road to Ferrari, got a Cali T & is now in a 488 Spider... makes the Porsche look positively boring in comparison. Well, not boring, but side by side there's only one that looks like a super car worth the asking price. Having said that, a Porsche GT3 with the 9000rpm limit is a dream of mine. With a Boxster Spyder in the interim please :P :P
I personally drive a Cayman GTS, and there's quite a few porsche owners around me lately, none of them have a manual (I do not either, more because I didn't have a choice because I bought mine this year and cannot spec anything unless I want a 718, which I don't due to the new engine). Exactly… perfectly put!
You hit the nail directly on the head. This limited supply thing is old and ridiculous.
it's a little perk to reward dedicated Porsche buyers. make something good (by making it with stuff everyone already said is bad and don't want), call it "pure", give it to those customers who'll make 30% or more later by reselling it, then give the average customer whatever the latest gimmick is because they don't know what the want and they'll be happy with anything

Niko B that is strange thinking, they can't be a little more patient to get the gearbox they actually want??
players_vip21 what is so good about a manual? especially is you live in a city
the gearbox only comes with the touring package so you don't get a nice wang ;-;
Who gives a....well. This is just so far the best 911R Video ever seen. Great job Alex :) ^Fabian

Hmm... time to play with it in Assetto Corsa...

aSenatorial btw just glued some vents to my hood, how much hp does that add?
My sports cars will always be MANUAL
His voice coming from the heart .that"s make the difference.
I seen one of these 911 r for sale in a high performance used car dealership for £429.000 🙃
a snip, since they're being offered online for a million in whatever local currency exists (that'd be pounds, dollars and euros; not so much yen or Zimbabwean loo roll)
They even removed the front badge, because *WEIGHT REDUCTION*, And awesome review as always
colin chapman would be proud
he is a legend or master of weight removal

your logo design is absolutely stunning, with the spirit of the toyota logo =)
This is such a beautiful car. Thanks for posting.
Not mention the higher redline in the manual GT3 that just came out for less money?!
Agreed… Make more of “THE BEST” for the regular customer!
Prices for 911R has been dropping. Saw 1 advertised for $450,000 US dollars
Danny Max oh wow that is cheap i might buy it now
Ridash it is all Porsche bullshit marketing. Wait a year and buy the new GT3 with stick, air conditioning and radio.
The 911R is just a niche car for Millionaires; all 911Rs were sold to 918 Owners first.
lol!
Danny Max yes u as u say sold to 918 owner I know Same one in my place having this 2 car

I love his autodromo stradale. Perfect for this video.
That Autodromo is almost as gorgeous as the R
The perfect 911
Excellent review! But I gotta ask, what watch are you wearing? Love the color.
Every base carrera should be like this. Maybe with less hp. That's the 911 every one want: simple and genuine.
When did we start referring to the bonnet as a “hood” ?
Thank you for not drowning out that beautiful sound with shitty dubstep.
Love the stance Alex.
can anyone say where is that road where the old porsche was filmed - amazing views and turns.
bless! I have a cushion you can borrow so you can see over the steering wheel if you need.. I'm Joking! Excellent as ever :)
Amazing review great video! Awesome presentation
I honestly don't know why you're not hosting Top Gear...
This might not sit well with Porsche nerds, but a real-world alternative to this car is the Honda S2000. Honestly: 9000rpm redline, naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive, 6-speed manual 'box, sounds insane, looks great and you can lower the roof if you want. OK, it's not making 500hp like the 911, but they have more in common than you might think. And a good one can be had for about £10k. A brilliant antidote to the muted experience of modern turbo engines.
The Porsche GT3 has a naturally aspirated inline 6 engine that revs up to 9000rpm and has a 6 speed manual rear wheel drive drivetrain :P
Not an inline 6 engine tho ;-;
That’s why until I can afford to buy a manual Porsche, I’ll always have my s2000.

Well, you won't be able to buy this one.
Wow that's quite the accomplishment! Have fun with whatever it is you buy!
Hahahahahhaha so a 911R or Huayra? Like the Huayra is 2+ mill euros, and a 911R is around 400k euro??? Lol fake troll

Yo Porsche - why not make a 718 version of this with the same engine as the GT4
Hopefully Porsche is getting the message, they could make more of these and make a tidy sum.
Right just right. Thanks.
The 911R makes me wonder: what if Ferrari applied the same recipe back when their berlinettas were still naturally aspirated? I mean, imagine a 458 Speciale with a manual gearbox. Sweet Christmas!
Cool...love this car ..
Always love your watches Alex, what is this one?
Albert Calvo Porcel it's an autodromo stradale
Maral Manukjan thought it was an Autodrome wasn't sure, thank you!
Another great review, thank you
Alex I f**kin love you!
Nice video, would you guys be able to upload 4K content any time soon?
And yes, why can't they make these cars more accessible or at least toned down versions. for example, when they do the GTS, just take all the sound deadening out and put some of the lighter weight bits on it. Doesn't need any more power than the standard GTS, but the noises, the lighter feel etc makes the car feel a little more characterful!
