Driving slow cars quickly is so much more fun than driving fast cars slowly
James May says the same. You can drive Hatchbacks on the limit more. Driving can be alot more fun then. You can have a much faster 458 driving on these roads, but because it's so technical and does alot for you if you think about it, it misses that pure pure driving experience like this 205 has.

This video basically reinforces what I've been trying to tell my mates for years now. It's not about how fast your car is on the public road, it's how involved you are in the driving process. Sure, on track I'd take any one of my mates cars over mine, but I can have just as much fun with a lot less danger to my licence as they can, for a lot less money... on the public road at least. When your doing 95km/h and redlining your 1.5 diesel, on the limit of adhesion with your doorhandles on the road, left foot braking, heel and toe, trail braking, everything you've got just trying to keep up with your mate in his Subaru WRX, and hold on to the car as it moves around underneath you, you finish the drive, with the car hotter than hot, the brakes gone and yourself knackered, with the biggest grin in the world. Not because you managed to keep up with him, although that is partly it, but because of how involved you were in the process of keeping up, completely focused on nailing that apex, holding the slight loss of traction, managing the understeer and enjoying the oversteer, it really is hard to explain.

Chris is incredible, really takes the focus away from numbers (which are irrelevant most of the time) to feelings when you drive (which is the most important most of the time). well done :)
neohimself My sentiments exactly. Big numbers mean a lot less than raw emotive engagement. I remember moving from a Ducati ST2 to a new CBR1100 many years ago. Far more capable, tons more torque/hp, far quicker but nowhere near the emotional experience. I guess the biggest numbers win for those who haven't yet really cottoned on to the driving spirit.
That's why it's always better to test a car before buying it ^^
This is a more serious approach to car reviews, which is pretty enjoyable
It also helps owners of less than supercar, but yet still fun cars to not feel like they're missing out because they are not mega rich. So many video reviewers fawn over the latest 0-60 in 2.8 second wonder and seem oblivious to the fact that they are generally owned by people who can barely drive them, or car flippers who don't love them. There should be more vids along the lines of "Most satisfying cars you can buy for ten grand".
Harris is the single greatest car reviewer alive today...articulate, brilliant behind the wheel, personable...humorous....hes got it all. Deserves his own network show.
Chris just demonstrated what I have being trying to tell al my mate, speed is not every thing, the feeling and involvement is much more interesting for a great drive...
But as usual it is just my opinion... I may and often am wrong! :)

Also, in a modern car to have fun, you are in regions of speed that are criminal to say the least. Never had more fun driving than the time I rented a 110hp Caterham Super 7. 120kp/h on a country road feels like 200 in a modern car.
I never thought like this.. I always drove just performance cars but Im thinking I might have been ignorant. yes. you can't drive fast on the street, but to be honest you can't push an old sports car on the street either.

It is not about the pure speed, but about the engagement... in some cars you don't need to go very fast to have fun, and that is what I was refering to... bus it is just an opinion I am not correct or wrong nor are you, just diferent prespectives.

Chris is the model example of a true Car enthusiast. He reminds us constantly that being a car enthusiast is about chasing the driving experience, rather than trying to be that guy with more horsepower than everybody else. Of course, that perfect driving experience will be different from driver to driver, but that's the beauty of it. Drive what makes you happy, not what catches everyone else's attention, or meets the approval of others.
i own a fiat panda 45 from 1982, 700kg, 45 hp, skinny tires, very low grip, unassisted steering and braking. I have such a laugh driving that thing because even when im driving at 10/10 the speed is low but the driving feels so engaging and fun. Its incredible how nuch joy light and simple cars can bring when driven. Thank you harris for showing that since most of the automotive jurnalists seem interested in cars waay above 6 figures and little interest is given to little pocket rockets that most of us could actully afford

Yea, when I watch these I appreciate my car more. It's not especially special to anyone else or supercar fast, but I do find myself noticing different things and driving more intently. I understand.

This is exactly why I keep my e36 M3. Though the world may have passed it by in performance, I always smile like a big idiot when I drive it. My AMG Mercedes will blow it into the weeds in acceleration, but I never take the long way home when I drive it. The old m3 always finds me taking the scenic route. Chris, I completely get it.
TheChocolateyGoodnes I still don't know why people hate the e36 it's a truly amazing car to drive. Same goes for Peugeot....yeah sure they forgot how to make cars but those 80s and 90s Peugeots were and still are awesome. Interiors rattle , electronics in the 306s go bad but hey at least they handle well in corners 😅
TCG- There's a reason so many people make track cars out of E36's. Balance and steering feel. I used to own a 1999 3231s with sport package. Not very powerful, but an absolute hoot to hustle down a twisty back road.

Never driven a 205 Rallye, but the 205 GTI is one of the best cars ever, if i may say so
I use A 205 Gt with 75 HP as my everyday-Car and love this thing. U don't need a whole lot of power to have fun and i agree: the 205 is one of the best cars ever made.
Owned a 205 1.1 and 1.4, drove a 205 Rallye, 205GTI 1.6 and 1.9, 106 Rallye 1.3 and 1.6, owned 2 106GTI's.
All fantastic cars. Think about buying a 106 Rallye still. Modern cars don't do it for me.

Ahhhh this is why I hold Chris Harris In so much high regard! This man actually truly knows what hell he’s talking about.
It reminded me of my very first car, a 91 Toyota conquest 1300 S .... the difference is that car wasn’t actually very fast BUT it was sheer basics and YES and kid I drive the hell out of it, my point being it was bare basics ... no on board computer, no ABS .... just plain good old fashioned steering wheel shifting gears ... put your foot down and go 🙂

Too many modern cars are all horsepower plus weight and are numb to drive, this proves that simplicity is best and you don't need to spend a fortune
Except the Porsche is still in a league of its own when it comes to driving experience and involvement. Sure, many modern cars are heavy and numb, which does take away from the experience. However, fun can mean many things in the automotive world, be it enjoying a car that’s way out of your league all the way to wringing out a classic car by the neck. Besides, cars like the 911R still appeal to people who love the art of driving. Sure, no car is perfect, including the 911R for the things it doesn’t have (i.e. Hydraulic Assist, manual/clutch to the floor, etc.)
However, the 911R costs quite the sum because there’s nothing like it in it’s class today.

The good thing is that you don't necessarily need a 205 gti... consider a 106/306 rallye, toyota corolla gti (huh?), honda civic vti (before the integra type r), citroen 2cv (if you want to get anywhere) and so much more...
Driving today has given us a greater thrill of speed and ability, but the physical and spiritual connection between car and road is being diminished..
(it's not the car makers fault, safety, security etc... the gt86/brz have done a great job of trying to keep it alive)

We only have peugeot salt shakers over here in Canada US unfortunately. I drove a 207 in Cuba for what it's worth, but we are limited to european vehicles.
I had a 1.3 205 Rallye for 100,000 miles, it was supremely memorable, nearly every mile
Chris Harris is the Patrick Stewart of Top Gear. He was able to replace the irreplaceable with something completely different and just as special.
My old Miata makes me giggle uncontrollably on a twisty road, and it often happens under 40 MPH.
Point well made. The 911R is the peak of refined performance capability and engine manufacturing. Elsewhere, it is merely "among the very best of the modern for tactility and engagement, which is in a lower league than cars of old".

Back in the day my late grandfather have a couple Peugeot dealers. I clearly remember when 2 brothers bought one for each. The smile when they got out... Just like Chris today. :)
He's discovered why i like my 1992 Citroen AX 1.1TZX I have in Italy. A "rescue" car I fixed up, its 788 kg with 30 fewer bhp than the Peugeot it strongly resembles inside and out. Its great to drive, and I'd love to have it here in the US instead of using it just a few weeks a year. I think this was a good performance era in Europe, just modern enough but with an "real car" feel. Its why I've kept my '90 300ZX over here as a 4th car, and drive it regularly.
He's right, we want manual gearbox to feel the gears and the transmission loads not as an option just gearing for fun. Weight for grip, stiffness and safety is ok but for racing feel at low speed it takes away the pleasure. We lost something.
karim- you are dead-on! Imagine what manual transmissions would be like if car manufacturers put the same effort into shift feel, gearing selection and clutch engagement as they do developing DCTs and 10 speed automatics! Not that they don't have their place, but lately it seems like manual gearboxes are an afterthought, or something only worthy of being in a bare bones economy car. Sadly, we are in serious danger of losing the manual box entirely. At least Porsche got the memo and brought back the manual. Something about used manual Porsche prices probably tipped them off. Now, Ferrari needs to get on board. Nothing but love out there for the old gated shifters. I doubt anyone ever drove a manual 550 Maranello and said "Damn, I wish this thing had an F1 box in it". Unless they were tracking it.
We lost the 'human' in the driving equation over the last 15years or so... flappy paddle ABS Launch Mode Traction Control 200 airbags parking sensors self parking autopilot.. etc... what if you actually like to and WANT to Drive the a modern car? Nice to see a 911 with a manual transmission again.. and reminds me why I've hung on to my 6 speed 911/996.

Oh dear. Another french car hater who, obviously, has never had the pleasure of grabbing a french hot hatch by the scruff of the neck and driving it on a quality b road. If you wanna know which country builds the best hot hatchs, take a guess but two clues, it aint Germany or Japan.
Your face when driving the 205 Rallye said it all, I know the feeling because I owned a 106 Rallye 1993 one of one thousand that was imported. That was an epic car pure raw driving pleasure.
Time to start restoring my 205 GTi. Dormant for around 7 years....ready to reclaim its glory. Thanks Chris Harris.

Chris is spot on here. It is not about the speed, it is about the thrill car can produce. The problem with modern - especially super - cars like this Porsche is, thay are way too fast for public roads, they are so good, that their limits are way too far. You make mistake? Ok. It is not in 70km/h, its most likely in 130+. Not only its illegal speed, you are also very close to big problem regarding your health.
Thats why older cars or for example miata is so praised, its possible (and lot of fun) to drive it on the limit even on normal road.

Oh my! My first car was a 205 1.4XS and it was awesome fun and I've never driven a car since that is that fun, so light that you open the bonnet and can see the floor! Love it!!!
I love this.
I had the same reaction to the 991 GT3: amazing engine, amazing noise, phenomenally-capable car. But honestly after driving it a bit in varied settings (everything from a highway commute to scorching down back roads) I found that the only times I could properly appreciate it were when I was stuck in stop-and-go traffic (PDK in D, soft suspension, noise buttons off) and when I was driving like a total lunatic (I try to do this only very occasionally for obvious reasons). Anywhere in between it felt very large and not very engaging-- there's no steering feel and not much to occupy your mind other than trying to subdue the monster inside you that wants to run through several gears to redline and make the resulting sound reverberate of every hard surface in such a way that people can hear it for miles in every direction. You just feel like you can't use the thing without being completely anti-social (unless you're driving it on wet leaves, in which case it's a lot of fun at 35mph, but that's sort of an edge-case). I still love the thing to bits (how can you not love something that makes those sounds?), but it's a troubling relationship.
I've got a BRZ with some suspension bits and a 2006 Carrera on tiny wheels that's completely stock save for a set of Super Sports and an air intake that makes howling noises. The Carrera you still need to take to empty mountain roads to wring out (and you're still lifting on all the straights whilst feeling a little anti-social), and even the BRZ on tiny 225-section tyres barely manages to be a car that you can kind of drive flat-out on the road.
Modern cars are too much. I wish the gearing on my 997 was lower so that I could use third gear without ending up well over 80mph... and that's an eleven-year-old base model. Faster is not better for pleasure driving on public roads. Clearly what I need is a 997 GT3 with the world's most absurd final drive ratio, space-saver tyres, and a Sharkwerks exhaust :D
You've pointed out a crucial thing: Gear ratio.
Many many many sport cars have too long final drives that makes the car barely enjoyable on public roads.
A shorter final drive would let us hear the engine scream but not worrying about speeding (too much).
That 911R like many other Porsches is too fast for the road and will suffer a proper track (ab)use like a lot of other modern sport cars do.
I have felt lately that "sport" cars from today forget what it is all about, Sure, it is obscenely fast, has extreme horsepower, drives 300+ and goes faster to 100 than sneezing but that car can do that WITH EVERY IDIOT BEHIND THE WHEEL!
They all forget to give the thrill of driving, sifting gear just right in a proper car without electronics feels so much more rewarding that any car out there today, look back at the flappy shifters in the early days, they were flawed and slow and proper drivers loathed them.. just cause we got used to them does not mean they give a true feel of driving.
we have speedlimits and those cars don't offer a thrill under or around that speed.
To be honest in my opinion all cars have gotten so idiot-proof that even idiots can drive fast and that is where it goes wrong. I love cars that reward you for driving them on the limit, it is communicating and fun. when a car is overpowered and needs 1001 electronic aids just to get of the start line without you looking a fool and needs an automatic cause it can shift better than you can it says something.. Yes, we can make cars that go 400 kph and make over a 1000 horsepower but what does it all mean when you as a driver are more a spectator than actually needed for the performance to come out?
So thank you Chris for showing off a car like the 205 ( I drove one and they are a blast)

How about a segment where you put the "icon" and the latest reinstalment head to head?
like the 205 1.9 GTI vs the 208 GTI, Mazda MX5/Miata vs current, E36 M3 vs the late one and so on..
And forget about all luxury and build-quality and gizmo's (that just distract you from driving) and focus on the thing it should be about.. The feeling it gives you as a driver.

This remind me my old 106 rally (same engine except ECU standard) God, it was a furious little car and the perfect machine to learn track driving.
Pretty much no parts in common between the Tu2J2 and TU24 engines even though they have the same capacity!
Gorgeous work here. I started watching this channel over lockdown and sage to say it’s become a bit of a safe space for me. I’m gonna own a 205 one day. Maybe an XS that I tweak a little or a rallye if I can afford it. Thanks to Chris and thanks to the community for sharing the joy!
Well the beauty of the XS is the same TU3S engine, different carb set up but easily tuneable and if you can get hold of a GTI front subframe and arms, convert the gear selector post (I did on mine, it isn't difficult) and you've got yourself what essentially is a euro spec Rallye for half the price.

Honestly I love Porsche, the 911 r is absolutely brilliant, but the 205 it's just awesome. It has that madness, that pure joy of driving and it has that sense of freedom.That's why the 80's hot hatches are still cool even in these days.😀

The drivers of the world know exactly what he is talking about. The car has to talk to you. I have been on test drives where on paper the car is a super hero but to drive. ( Clutch or shifter or seat position is horrible) my favorite Gearbox Honda Accord 4cyl 2006. Not much of a car but a delightful drive

I drove the F-RS as well. Very good car. Funny I was a salesman at at Toyota dealer too about 10 years ago. And the only fun vehicle they had at the time was the Tacoma X-Runner. The V-6 and the transmission pairing are excellent, very fun to drive.

This is how feel about my 93 VW Cabriolet, I just drove her yesterday for the first time in a month, hearing that little four cylinder start up and throwing her up and down through her gear cant be happier.
Had a Vauxhall Nova as a kid. 1.2 4 cyclinder and absolutely fell in love with driving. I had it on the limit every single time I drove it. Renault 5 GT was the dream back in 95.

He was close to the curb but no where near touching it. The sound was a metallic noise as he ran over the grid, it even syncs to the car's movement.
I might be tripin but I don't think that Chris drives external shots. Driver have more hair and is paper then Chris.
A 205 Turbo 16 Rally Group B is certenly a much better driving experience than any top tier car of today.

David Hill Driver for sure, Group B rally cars were the the epitome of the driving experience. 400hp cars, less than 1000kg, all wheel drive, no electronic assistance. Audí Quatro, Lancia Delta S4 Integrale, Peugeot 205 T16.
Sebastián Demaría 400hp? Yeah in 1984, in 85' and '86 they were close to 600hp.
Actually, by all accounts at the time, the homologation version of the 205 T16 was underwhelming. Low-ish power, (200hp) turbo lag, ... There was a PTS (Peugeot Talbot Sport) kit sold to private racers that took care of most issues but it was not road-legal, iirc
Olivier Grandjean the road versions yes. But that wasnt anny different for the rest of the homologation groupe b cars. But in full rallyspec they do 400 to 700ish. Depents on what car and the year.

I owned a 205 Rallye for more than 8 years and it was great. In Germany it had a 1,9 litre Engine.
I can absolutly understand Mr. Harris enthusiasms. Reminds me of my first car a 205 GTI 1.6 that i bought new in 1987. It is up to today the only car i dream of from time to time. For sure it is because of the sensation every first car brings. But i will never forget how fast, light, nimble, direct and fun delivering the 205 GTI was. Nothing around like that nowadays. Well, maybe the new Mazda MX-5...

Compared to other presenters who are obligated contractually he actually wanted to be involved and expand Top Gear even more beyond just TV shows which tbh is a personal matter for the audience.
I hate to have to agree with you. the 3 blocks have turned into americans, with big obvious fake forced over-acted everything. I loved them so much in top gear. Chris is bringing so much passion around car.

I may only have a base model 1.1 Peugeot 205 Style, but when you're on a twisty b-road, ragging its neck, feeling that immense body roll you get from the soft suspension, you can't help but fall in love with it. You still get that feel that somewhere in its close ancestry, there's a rally racer.

For the price of a decent second hand MX5 in Europe, you could get an equally well maintained Toyota MR2, or one of these (or if you're lucky, a Series 1 Elise), all of which are arguably better drivers cars (yes, even the FWD Peugeot).

It say it's the other way around tbh, the Porsche's a toy for the rich and the 205 is a tool for a driving enthusiast.
People will laugh, but my current daily driver is a 1.1 litre 1991 Metro. But I wouldn't swap it for anything in the world. It just makes me smile and I can hoon away feeling like a racing driver while doing 45mph. Brilliant fun!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Chris for finally showing that driving is not about speed it is about driving and controlling a car. I remember the best fun I have had in a car was in a TR3. It had hardly enough power to get out of it's own way but was light, nimble and controlled by me via shifter, clutch, and throttle.
Today is the greatest day ever concerning power and technology with cars. People talked about the Muscle Car error as if that was something which we will never see again but the Camaros, Mustangs, Dodges have proven to be far more efficient, powerful, comfortable and reliable than anything in history.
Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Maserati, Corvette, Bugatti, Alfa, and even Honda and Nissan have shown that sports cars are at their peak today.
People who are drivers know that VW GTI, and Lancia's, Fiats, Peugeot, and many others are incredible rides if love driving. A 912, with the 4 cylinder, Porsche is actually more satisfying than a 911 with the 6 cylinder engine to drive.

I've been keen on this message for long while. I'm quite enamored of Chapman platitudes. Owning an Elan and a Europa race car, having driven Sevens and Esprits (well, certain models), driving Formula Fords and spending quite a bit of time regularly on-track with a handful of super cars, I'm more enamored than ever. Simplify and add lightness. Engagement. Involvement. Handling. Grip. Braking. Power and top speed last. Control. Apex speed. Braking distances. Corner exit. Fun. The US sadly never got these Peugeots, but there were still a number of very good things available - the early Honda Civic and CRX Sis, the early Nissan SE-R, the Acura Integra Type R, the wonderful Dodge ACR Neon, and perhaps a couple others I'm missing at the moment. All wonderful things to drive. Simple, affordable, fast, fun.
Just got my self fully restored 205 GTI and let me tell u understand what u mean. This little Peugeot gives me more fun then all my cars I have in my garage. It was my dream car when I was young but would never expect it will be so much fun and joy today when I have so many theoretically better cars and I am 40+ years old. Simply amazing but very unexpected.

I used to own a brand new 205 GTI 1.9 when it was new, and wow. The feeling of driving it was better than most I have ever had before or since. Before the 205, I had an Alfetta 1.6 that was fettled to give 172 bhp at the wheels, and hands down, it is the best drivers feeling I've ever had. That car was just mental, brakes and steering uttelry precise. the gearbox a bit moody when cold, and always demanding patience to get from any gear into second. I now have a fettled 996 C4S, and it's probably what comes closest to any of these. I also need to mention my 1996 and 1/2 Toyota Supra Turbo. It was also fettled to give almost 400 bhp, but the suspension (lowered 45 and 50 mm front and rear respectively) and steering was almost as close to a gocart as you can get. Fun to see the 205 revived, it deserves all the mention it can get. IT WAS THAT GOOD.
And that is why my favorite car that i have ever owned is 106 rallye ...nothing compares...it's all about 'feeling' the road

Yup, Chris nails it when it comes to the joys of just driving. It's the relationship between the driver inputs, car, tires, and the road. The relationship you have communicating with the car through the feeling of the gas, brake, clutch, shifter, and steering feedback. I also find that the relationship between the effort to work each control is important too. A car that has a precise and well weighted input relationship between clutch,gas,brake pedal effort, stick shift effort, and steering precision/feedback separate great cars from the mediocre. Porsche's over the years in general nail this aspect, but as Chris demonstrated, there are many other cars for a lot less money that can bring some driving joy in to your life as well. Great video Chris, keep up the great work!!

This is a man who know what driving pleasure means. Yes. The flappy paddle is faster but the manual gear box just makes the driver so much more connected to the car and the driving experience. Bravo Chris.

As a kid I had many dream cars on my wall. My first love however, was this 205 and later on the first 106 rallye. I had driven them many times and the involvement, the feeling that came trough every surface I had contact with, the "taste" they left after a short drive was beyond words. Never came to owning one of these, the closest is my Ignis Sport which is pretty much the same consept and it goes and feels wonderfully alive and analogue. Maybe some day a stripped, white 205 will find its nest in my garage. Maybe...
My first car was a diesel 205 van. With no weight over the back, needless to say I learned quite quickly about lift-off oversteer lol. Seeing the interior of that spartan 205 brought back some memories.
