I was 17 at this time, we had a band and this is all we played, we worshipped these guys, one day in the summer o 86 me and my best friend, my guitar player, we went to six flags in Gurney Illinois, we went in line for the Eagle, big rollercoaster we were up on the bridge and looking down I said man dude right there looks like Cliff, then look! James, Lars, yep they were there all but Kirk, we waited in line right behind them talking to them for like an hr, went in the same car as them, got their autographs, and couldn't believe it the rest of the night! Was pretty cool!!
the best live version of one of their greatest songs ever..they were on point!!! Their best line-up, in my opinion. R.I.P. Cliff Burton. Good music will never get old!
One of Kirk's more tasty solos, Especially the slow ones in the beginning. Hetfield in my opinion is the best thrash rhythm player. He writes great melodies along with awesome chugging rhythms.
He was a beast on another level. I remember after the bus accident, I didn’t talk to anyone at school for weeks, and welled up once in study hall while thinking of the tragedy.
Undiscovered Band i personally don't think it would've been much different except for some better bass... but i think they would've ended up playing similar
@@owenspeulstra2741 I kinda wonder if there are any clues that indicate what the fourth album would have been like if Cliff was alive. The only real clue that I can think of at the moment is the fact that Cliff wrote parts of "To Live Is To Die", so that solo would probably be a part of that album either way.
MY FAVORITE METALLICA SONG TO PLAY ON GUITAR AND LISTEN TO.. best combination of what makes Metallica the best metal musical force of beautiful melodic riffs/interludes, with face pounding hard riffs then beautiful melodic again then face melting riffs all into one.. SO SICK \m/\m/\m/
Damn. I don't know if anyone could hear it but cliffs backing vocals in this sound scarily like Jason's exact backing vocals in the performance of this in Seattle 89
" that release of energy " is the key word.... Music is meant to release energy and express emotions... Those emotions of a late teenager or a young "outcast" adult will eventually subside... but others will take over them, or they get crushed under the influence of fame & fortune...
Metallica was a step (a good step) in the history of Metal...but Metal culminates with PANTERA. no one will ever take metal beyond where Pantera had gone
joe blow Damn dude that is very well put and exactly the way it is.. Metallica atleast somewhat propelled trash metal to newer heights with their own style. After them comes Pan fucking tera, which took the basic METAL mentality of FUCK YOU I AM PLAYING WHAT I WANT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT FUCK IT.. Yeah dude i never thought of it like that til you said it that way but damn right EXACTLY how it went down.. Pantera is so underrated its a travesty to the music world... \m/\m/\m/
Really wish i´d been at that show on Lars´ homeground at Roskilde Festival-86. Back then, Metallica had something going, they ruled the world along with Iron Maiden, it´s sad how they have turned out lately, with bad albums and stuff, but man I respect them for what they did in the 80´s, just amazing, Lars was really quick on the drums, Hetfield had a voice, and they had Cliff, who was, along with Steve Harris, the best bass-player EVER! May he rest in piece.... Jason was also amazing, with his beast-vocals and stuff, and he could really play the bass ;)
Well, maybe that´s true on some point, but he wrote some excellent material on "And Justice For All...", even though he never got any credit for it. I just think that all along, they have an all -round problem when they play live, because they basically don´t play that good anymore, i know that they are old and all that, but there are older bands that play the ass out of Metallica now (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc) and it is sad. But mostly it is Hetfield´s voice...
Mickey Holm Hetfield's voice has been really the best it could possibly be the last 5 years. He really tries his best and sounds fucking phenomenal for someone 50 years young.
Still, even though he tries the best he can, it is just not good enough. Many metal-vocalists older than him have better voices today, and despite the fact that he always gives 110%, it sounds horrible, especially on the old tracks, and the new ones aren´t good ether, but that is mostly because the songs aren´t good. Im sorry to say it, but in my opinion, Metallica has reached their limit, i have the deepest respect for what they did in the 80´s, but ever since Black, it has been pretty bad. Bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer King Diamond, Black Sabbath etc, sound far better than Metallica at this point, so for their own sake, i would recommend them to do one last farewell tour, so that they can quit the business with some dignity left, instead of squeezing too much juice from the apple.
I was in high school from 86-90 and got into Metallica in 84. RTL was one of my first albums ever purchased. When I was in high school, Metallica was a bunch of nobody’s, and only myself and about four others in my High School even knew who these guys were. I was the only one who wore a Metallica patched up Jean jacket every day. I used to collect rare Metallica albums back then. I still have my collection stored away somewhere (Different colored vinyl albums of Creeping Death & Jump in the Fire as well as picture discs of the first three albums and whiplash, bootleg concert recordings, interview picture discs, double LP’s, etc... all purchased back in the late 80s). I remember When AJFA came out, we had about 10-15 more students in the school that suddenly became fans. I knew things would never be the same from that point on. Once they hit the mainstream and became popular (pretty much from 1990 and on), I pretty much lost interest, as the nostalgia of being in that small exclusive club of fans was gone.
Cliff is a fury; one of the greatest performance ever. Cliff made a major contribution in the evolution of the band even after his tragic death. Once his sister said that the main purpose of Cliff was that of being the best musician he could be and he made It, thanks to his talent and his love for his job. Thank you for all the emotions, the tears, the chills you give me all the time I listen to you. Cliff’s music makes my life better and more bearable giving me comfort, support and inspiration. Love you Cliff.. how I wanted to meet you.
Cliff was the one you could go up and talk to after the show. Always had time for us younger grommets. Still have one of his picks. Wont ever forget you brother
Although Cliff is legendary, perhaps even mythic by now for his fingerstyle bass playing, yes, he did also use a pick on certain songs, and during solos.

Having metal in my blood streams, behing the 80´s the decade of really heavy metal, this one in my opinion,...blowed out so many roofs for sure!!! Damn just can´t forget this one rigth here!!! Damn, they were real something else! Thks Metallica for all the times you made´t hapening, and those were just like,...can´t find the words to descriv´t! F..k !! U were awsome, brilliant, etc, etc!! Metal for ever and ever!!!
the heights of the metal years.. we didn't know how good we had it back then.... with all this kick ass metal!!! I thought those days would last forever. , dirt bikes, bj's, metal and beer.
They are so live, so dynamic in this video........ I just can't imagine, how wildly cool was in this concert. Agree with others, I just born in wrong time and I afraid, that damned pop push away all greatest rock and metal groups. We must resist, because METALLICA ARE THE BEST and they are undying!!!
Great VID! I saw the just after Cliff had died. Jason was still fresh and eager to impress. The show was amazing. They dedicated "Orion" to Cliff and Jason blew it away. It was truly a great day that day.
videos like this are priceless because they are rare and not many people recorded Metallica during their epic old days! Great video, many thanks for uploading it! Metallica the best!!!
love this song, i'm so glad i got to see these guys live in concert before cliff died may he rest in peace, everything after went steadily downhill from there =(
I must say though sometimes I hear people say that Metallica sold out on the Black album, which I will never understand. Ride the Lightning, Master of puppets, And Justice For All are their best albums to most people. I however believe that the Black album was their most prominent, well rounded and mature musical masterpiece. It is a true culmination of what makes Metallica the true musical force that they are. All i can say is that is my opinion and if you don't agree, listen to the ENTIRE album from track 1 to the end. Very rarely in the music world does one buy an album, press play and every song from start to finish keep you listening without going to the "hit" songs that promotes the album. My closing statement shall be," I listened to the entire Black album and every single song on it is incredible not just the few hits most know, THE ENTIRE ALBUM IS INCREDIBLE!" \m/\m/\m/\.../\.../\.../
The only answer i can give you is that most people like thrash metallica. The only song that was near thrash wad through the never. The songs are great but theybcant match up any of the first albums when it comes to speed and technical riffing styles. The black album was rather simple and more slower
Johnny Balvuena I'm not really sure changing musical direction is "selling out". It's a lot braver to change, than to just play the same style your entire career. I know Slayer, Megadeath etc still play huge shows. But I don't think they've achieved anything near what Metallica have, by just sticking to the thrash style
Steven Apexresidual the black album was the last great metallica album. it was alos probably the greatest produced album ive ever heard, its simply perfection from beginning to end.
Steven Apexresidual Yeah I agree, same goes to A7X. Just because you grow more mature musically, doesn't automatically mean selling out. I personally a lot of songs off of Load and ReLoad(Not so much St Anger) and I love Death Magnetic.
Classic Metallica ! The first tour I saw them was MOP w/Ozzy. They were such a force to be reckoned with. 8 Concerts later, I still love 'em. Sure they have chnged, but if they hadn't, everyone would bash them for still playing thrash and never "growing musically". Whether or not you like their newer stuff, think twice before yelling sellout. Music is something very personal and as a person changes, his music has to, as well. It's called evolution - for good or bad.
Those truly were the days, I was born September 27th 1986, and sadly NEVER got to see cliff, or the MetallicA that was... or any other band that "was" for that matter... While I am glad that I can still listen to their music, I do wish I was born earlier...

It's haunting to think that in less than 7 months he would be lying on the ground dying under a tour bus. A great loss to heavy metal.
Trash metal back then
+waw jonne Thrash.
Ryan Thistle yeye
+MrDudeguitar0 A true pioneer of the bass guitar...such a loss : (
Jesus Christmas bro.
you had to go there....
Someone make a time machine or anything just so we can hear Cliff play again.
Yes please
I wish! but I'm sure many current bassists have cliff as a reference and are good too, but the world of music is difficult.
he died so damn close to where I live :(
you live near a legend then
When Metallica was Metallica and I was 16 years old! How I miss this...
I often think what the 4th Metallica album would be like if Cliff was still alive!! and all the years upto now.....
Undiscovered Band i personally don't think it would've been much different except for some better bass... but i think they would've ended up playing similar

I did a video on that so feel free to check it out. Though it's unscripted and not professionally shot. But it addresses that topic.
The guitar tone on this ancient VHS tape is still way better than their last few albums.
the guy that uploaded this video is literally as old as youtube
+Austin Atkinson (JBdoesgaming) yes, that's true
No his got to be older I'm thinking.
What so like 14?

17th Sept 1986, Metallica with Cliff, probably my all time favourite gig, most certainly the best material they ever played thats for sure
METALLICA=BEST BAND EVER!!THEY RULED THE WORLD!
